    I have experienced the complete joy of performing opposite Dame Janet in the 1973 Glyndebourne production of Monteverdi's "Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria". She and our director, Sir Peter Hall, taught me a great deal about stage deportment. I marveled at Janet's acting and singing of the long-suffering Penelope, and certainly at that time saw no indication of stage fright from her. I have held her on an artistic pedestal my entire career, and appreciate in this clip her candid honesty.

      +Richard Stilwell I'm in awe and somewhat at a loss for words, other than thank you so much for taking the time to share such a lovely memory! You'll always find an appreciative audience here.

      Richard Stilwell Did you also sing "L'Incoronazione di Poppea" with her?

      Dame Janet's timbre and depth of communication from the first recording I heard of her as a young singer are imprinted in me for ever

    Oh, Dame Janet! You have no idea how much joy you have given me! Just recently, I drove 25 miles to go to the grocery store and couldn't leave the car because you were singing Grieg. It was 15 degrees F. outside, and the engine distracted from the sound, so I just sat there in the cold.

      I meant Elgar. LOL! I was sitting here working on Grieg.

    This is gold. Such honesty. Such beauty. It’s very rare to find artists speak so eloquently, so accurately about this issue that affects our performances. She’s marvelous and so helpful. 👏🏼🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟❤️

    Such is the path for those with great humanity as Dame Baker. Baring her most sensible heart wide open to an audience is truly frightening, she is truly an extraordinary person

    She was always so honest in her approach to life and to singing. I have met folks , fellow singers, who didn't get the message of her singing, but I promise you that as one who heard her sing live in the opera house on two occasions she took you to the heart of both words and music. That is an Artist.

      I saw her at Oberlin College in recital in 1970. Then again in the late '70's at the Kennedy Center. I treasured her Town Hall pirate LP for years. Loved her. Still do. As a mezzo, she was my inspiration.

      Gail Multop My voice teacher indirectly introduced me to her music when she picked a piece from Orfeo as my very first aria, and I listened to a lot of different versions while I was learning it. Hers was my favorite, and I've loved her ever since. :D

    What a joy to hear these words of wisdom, so honest and eloquent! I hope that many performers of all sorts will find their way to this clip. Dame Janet's recordings were an essential part of my musical education as a teenager in the 1960s (and later as well), and I was fortunate to hear her in concert on two occasions.

    • @gigarat
      @gigarat  Рік тому

      So insightful, isn’t it? And how awesome you got to hear her in person, please feel free to share more about those concerts when you have a moment! Just watching her in clips from Orfeo on UA-cam was what inspired me to learn to sing opera (just for my own personal enjoyment, not to perform in front of people, which is also why this particular portion of the documentary hit me). I’d be completely blown away if I actually got to hear her in person. 💙

    I am not a professional singer, I only started to sing at the age of 58, by 60 I was singing for Simon Cowell but... after the first few performances I managed to start enjoying singing for audiences. Of course I don't have her responsibility and my audiences are not like hers.... But I know exactly what she means because I was trained as a professional pianist in my youth and I used to be so awfully nervous that it became a nightmare! Maybe now I just thinking of myself as being past my sell date.... hahahaha.... Yes, I see my gift is a true joy for me and I offer it to those I sing for!

      Wow it's been so long I had to try and refresh my memory, but the only spot I could see her in this setting was about 40 minutes in. I had this on DVD years ago, so will have to try and find it again, I suspect other "full" uploads here on YT are actually cut or edited.

The link I'm trying to paste is hideously long, so try typing this in your Amazon search and it should pull it up, it's showing $13.99 at the moment: Janet Baker - Full Circle / Gluck, Donizetti, Elgar
