Aloha Lynn, I own three ipu but wanna have an Ipu Heke. Can you tell me the terminologies of the pa'i on ipu heke? Say U , te and the fingers fluttering on the ipu heke. I don't know the terminologies of them. Mahalo! Actually, I have subscribed long long ago.
I have shared my ipu with a drum circle in Chiloquin, OR. As usual, I meet one or more other Hawaii ex-patriots in every group. The member I met was originally from the Big Island. I spent my youth on Oahu from Nuuanu to Waianae.
I live in Japan now, but lived 6 years in Kailua Kona. I inherited an ipu from an elderly hula Sensei here, but didn't know how to play it until I watched your video. Thank you!
I do own one. I haven’t used it for along time. I don’t have any of the people I used to do hula with around any more. Ko Ma’i’ Ho’eu ‘eu I think is the name of the song. I could very well be wrong.
I acquired an ipu along with four pu' ili from facebook marketplace and introduced them to my general music classes in Indiana. I have lived and traveled in many parts of the world and want my students to experience the wonderful music from those places and more. This past summer I went to Mali and brought back a djembe and a balafone, traditional western african instruments. Thank you for you excellent demonstration. Hopefully, some day I will be able to visit your beautiful state and see the ipu and pu' ili used first-hand.
Hi Lynn, I made my first Ipu heke from gourds bought from a farm in The Netherlands where I live. When I was younger I performed Hula without ever have been in Hawaii. And fell in love with your culture! I call myself "highly creative" and when I feel stuck I just play on my ipu heke to ground again. It is so relaxing to play on such a pure instrument. So I wan't to thank Hawaii for bringing the world a rich, pure and loving culture "mahalo nui loa iā 'oe" is it?
Thank you so much for video. This year we crafted ipu heke ole in our school of Hawaiian dance in Russia. It was a great experience for me. I named my ipu Ainokaia, meaning by that 'food for fish', because the special smell of the ipu was associated with my grandfather's fish food. He's passionate fisherman. Now I'm learning to play it. Thank you again!
Aloha Lynn, I really enjoyed watching this video. Many years ago I was privileged to learn hula in Hawaii and since coming home I have taught others what I was taught, in doing the basic hula steps I used the back of chairs as my ipu because I didn't know where to purchase one from in my home country however, a couple of years ago I was gifted an ipuheke however I have really learned a lot about the properties of the ipuheke/ipu through your video. I am grateful for your knowledge and the way you do your presentation. Mahalo.
Thank you for this video. I haven't got an ipu. My Kumu Hula used it for Kahiko. I love both Kahiko and Auana. Kahiko is so sacred and so important in hawaiian culture that I have a great respect for it. It was an great privilege to learn it in Paris with Halau hula o Manoa (unique Halau in France). Thank you Lynn for having the possibility to practice Hula Auana with you because I live now very far away from Paris. Aloha from France
@@iHulaHawaiiBonjour Lynn. I no longer practice with my Halau. I live now at about 500 km far from Paris. I am situated near Atlantic coast in Vendee south of Nantes. That's why I appreciate practicing with you Lynn. Aloha from France
I am an octogenarian and learned hula a few years ago. As I love percussion as well as dancing, I purchased an ipu from my teacher and enjoy playing the basic rhythm. Thank you for all your lessons. (I am a haole from California.)
My halau went to the gourd farm in fall room California. We picked our gourds and made our own ipu’s and ipuheke’s! I still have mine they last forever!
I do have an ipu, ordered from Aloha Outlet. It has a very nice sound but if I ever buy another one, I would want to handle it and pick it out myself. Thanks, as always, for sharing your knowledge. I always learn something new and useful! MJ
Aloha and mahalo nui for educating me on beautiful ipu. I don’t dance hula but I love watching it. I play ukulele and practice Hawaiian mele for most part but I love the sound of the percussion instrument and would love to own one but are very hard to come by on the mainland. Mahalo once again for your instruction ❤️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🤙🏽
Hello, Lynn. It was very interesting to learn about those musical instruments. I have heard the sounds of them online, but didn't know their names and how they make the sounds. Thank you for your wonderful, educational video. I am planning to catch up with your previous videos that were posted during my vacation.😀 Have a lovely day.
I came to this video cuz I am a hula practitioner and my kumu said we needed to acquire an ipu by new years. we need it for our next mele, so I was trying to do some research on what to expect.
I received my first Ipu. I am learning to play from your videos. I haven't gotten the tones down yet. I do know how to beginners hula and learning hula from videos.
I was just gifted an iPu heke by my neighbor who is a lovely Hawaiian gaint. Please if you see this keep my neighbor in your thoughts and send him healing energy he just informed me he’s dying of cancer.. so glad we got to talk.
Mahalo nui loa dear Lynn, this was so amazing. I don't own an ipu, but I really want to buy one. Perhaps it is possible purchasing one here in Germany. I will look for it. A nice weekend for you and your ohana
Aloha, this is just what I needed. Mahalo nui Loa. My cousin bought me one for my birthday a couple of years ago. I actually have a new addition to my collection which I recently got for my birthday this year. My cousin bought me an uli'uli red yellow. When she bought my ipu, I think she got just the right size. It feels like it fits in my hands pretty well. I have one question though. When you say, hold your hands like this, how do you mean? You did a very good job of describing it for the most part though. There are a few things that I didn't get like the motion you make as you tap the ipu.I was told by another hula teaching channel that when you tap the ipu, you have to kind of make a brushing motion as you tap it. How do you wrap the cord around your wrist correctly? I think mine fits on my wrist pretty easily without falling off. The other channel just teaches the very basics and some things like how to play ipu.
Aloha Cassie - Mahalo for you message. I actually hit the ipu with palm and fingertips, rather than brush, to get a good sound. To hold the ipu, you naturally grab it at the neck with your thumb and all fingers. Did you try to use your ipu yet?
iHula Hawaii Yes. I do try to play a little when I get a chance. I also love your uli'uli video you just did. I left you a message for you on that one also. I also have a set of Ili'ili.
Aloha my name is Wendy my Hawaiian name is malonnie ai live thee ipuam I sorelling it righti dance the hula and I am blind from birthand hulais my go to all the time
Aloha Lynn, Mahalo for all of your your instruction. I would love to purchase an ipu and an ipuheke. Where is a likely place to find one on Maui? Also, if I may ask, who was your Kumu? Do you have a Hawaiian name? Is it pono for me to pick one for myself?
Polly, I would do a search for hula supplies on Maui. If not, there are ones you can order from Oahu. My Kumu was Arlene "Kaui" deSilva. My Hawaiian name is Naniuhane - given to me by my late kumu, which means "beautiful spirit." Some feel It is not pono to give yourself a Hawaiian name as traditionally names are given as a gift from others. However if you just translate your English into Hawaiian, that would be acceptable.
Aunty, that is true. When I teach my keiki dancers as a group, we paʻi with our right. Individuals could play with either hand if simply learning the paʻi.

@@iHulaHawaii I'm finally getting a chance to reply! I would love to use my ipu in a hula. Is there one you could recommend?
Really interesting! I received the historical AG doll Nanea for my birthday, and she has an ipu heke. We wanted to learn about it here!

I absolutely love that, but how do you make an ipu drum? all I know is I need a gourd
nvm, I figured it out, and I'm super excited for my gourd plant to sprout gourds so I can make these :D

Online but depending on where you live (internationally) there might be restrictions. I'll be doing a video on where to purchase soon.
I do have a ipu
I have two shekeres. A friend of mine has an ipu.
I have both a Ipu & ipu Heke
Lafayette Shores
this would be an even more awesome instrument if it was two gourds fused together, lol
Thatʻs exactly what the ipu heke is!

I disagree. I have never seen any hula dancer play left-handed ipu, especially in a group. It would look ridiculous.
