My aunt and uncle had a small egg business and they would candle the eggs. If they had blood spots I believe my aunt made cakes or cookies with them. My uncle died … at 93!!!
Why doesn’t he answer the questions about the eggs are they good, do we get rid of the chickens that lay the blood spot eggs all I have are the red sex Lincoln
Yep, I always wanted to know. Nice to know I was on the right track with what I thought. Sounds like tossing them as I have done is the right way to go. Smile!
So first time trying farm Fresh eggs. Most the eggs I have have I’d say dark dark red or black spot in them. I’m happy to eat them if good. If bad I don’t want to. Big ag scares me. At the same time I don’t know the small local farmers I buy from ( I know them as neighbors I have no idea of their idea of healthy chickens and what they’re selling. Can I buy and cook these
Are the blood spots more in some breeds then others. I seam to have this problem with the red chickens that I have. They have a great coop food water large area to roam yet still get a lot of the spots.
I raised chickens for many years and noticed a similar thing. I did not have blood spots in eggs that were white or blue, I did have blood spots occasionally with hens that laid brown or green eggs. It was always the same hens that produced eggs with blood spots so they were culled and their eggs not used for hatching and I also began to give preference to white and blue eggs and I had no more issues with blood spots. This is my experience and observations I have no hard proof but most commercial egg laying breeds at the time laid white eggs and had been selected for egg quality ( no blood or meat spots) for generations where the brown egg layers had not been so heavily selected for those traits. If you are having an issue with blood spots you need to identify the hen or hens producing eggs with this and get rid of them as I doubt it's the whole flock.
Great info. Great videos spent most of yesterday watching your videos and looking forward to putting a lot of what I've learned to use. Keep em coming.
John, I have a chicken feed question, does age of feed(like storing 5-6months at most) affect nutrient content/chicken health? The context i'm coming from is I can't get organic feed locally so I have to have it shipped in and if I order enough to ship frieght vs Fedex I can save $.24/lb on the feed but I don't want to do it if it will hurt health of my chickens or lose nutrient content before I can use it.
+BrokenArrowFarm Typically food starts to go stale a couple weeks after it was milled. The birds won't like it as much and you'll lose some efficiency. Feed at small scale is a really difficult skill to master because off our limitations with minimum order sizes. A lot of the feed you get from "pet stores" can be old and stale. Sometimes it's really hard to tell. 5-6 month old feed that's been milled will be really stale.
OK,I candle my eggs. It drives me crazy because I don't see anything. Then a couple days later, I crack an egg pen and there is a blood spot. What am I looking for? I anticipate I would see a dark spot in the egg, but I never see anything. Is it usually towards one end or the other that I should concentrate looking? I give eggs to my neighbors and I'm afraid I will gross them out. Thanks
My 8 month old barred rock rooster will not stop attacking my 11 month old barred rock hen, she won't come out to feed unless I bring her out and very rarely lays now, what can I do?
I would like some help with this problem please...what about when the chicken lays the egg and it comes out with blood on the egg itself? Not in the eggs but on the outside of the shell. What is the cause and possible solutions.
+Paul Pollaro I think it would, but I couldn't tell you for certain. Without the science to back it up I would guess that it wouldn't matter. It's just a little abnormality.
How fast are you cracking them after collecting? Or rather, how fast are you collecting? Fertile eggs that sit around tend to start to transform into chicks which could be causing your issue.
TMI ! BTW, you didn't mention that there's no reason to NOT eat an egg with a blood spot...it's just a cosmetic issue for the consumer. Is that correct?

+Sociedade Civil rtp2 Blood on the outside of a chickens' egg can be caused by a hen passing an egg that's too large and there's a little... injury. Then as it heals there may or may not be a little more. A little every once in a while is more normal where if you see it frequently or a lot of blood there could be cause for concern and you should contact your vet.

I was always taught that if an egg had a blood spot in it it was fertilized and you shouldn't eat it. We collected the eggs regularly.
Yup I toss them or give them to my 🐕
I was watching a talk show back in the 60’s, they asked Gloria Swanson why she looked so young. Her reply was that she eats only fertilized eggs 😳
What did you do with them?
Yep, I always wanted to know. Nice to know I was on the right track with what I thought. Sounds like tossing them as I have done is the right way to go. Smile!
+Ciecie Newson They are still edible, just not salable. You can eat them, but I wouldn't sell them.
It is 100% safe to eat unless you are eating raw eggs. Don't throw them away that's just wasteful
Put them in your garden if you have one! Awesome fertilizer.💚
I'm new in the chicken world. Thanks for the info

Patrick Kirby yes , I agree. Had chickens myself. I they are disturbed by predators will also create dysfunction.
Possibly infectious bronchitis

We also want to know if we can eat these eggs with the blood spots or even black spots; so can we eat it when we get them?
I bought some expensive ass eggs for 5$ and so far 2 of them had blood spots in them :S
That's awful
What do you do if you have blood spots in your eggs do we do something to the chicken
Awesome always wondered now my question is answered . thanks:') John
Egglandbest from Walmart always have blood spots 6 out of a dozen the other day.
One chick I never got to meet had pasty butt, so you reckon you could make a video on how to clean it?
This always happens when I buy free range eggs in my country. Which is annoying cause the entire eggs in the box are like that.

Charlie should watch this vid
Just out of curiosity, would an egg with a bloodspot still hatch? Would it simply not matter?
+Paul Pollaro I think it would, but I couldn't tell you for certain. Without the science to back it up I would guess that it wouldn't matter. It's just a little abnormality.
So are they okay or not?
Any thoughts on why my freshly layed chicken eggs, when I crack them open are soupy, and the yolk is not firm?

+Some Southern Stuff That's correct. I should have made that more clear.
+John Suscovich Saying that it was caused by one of the diseases chickens get made it sound like quite the opposite. Should they be culled?
So does it mean that it is not fertilized???
But is it safe to eat
Can you eat eggs with blood spots?
I would not sell them, you can candle to find out. But I would and have eaten them myself.
do you eat it or trash it ?
