For more than thirty years Mr. Stephen Cohen has been my go-to guy on all matters Russian. His deep knowledge and excellent scholarship has become more and more illuminating and sadly more and more rare over the years. Looking forward to reading his new book.
Cohen's work is even more relevant today than ever before. There is a theme that runs through a lot of US political dynamics that continually causes trouble (also for the US), which is the tendency toward "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." The arming of ultra-nationalist militants in Ukraine, the mujahideen in Afghanistan and Bosnia, islamists in Syria, and so on...the list goes on and on. The recent embrace of state security apparatus by liberals and progressives because they are counter-posed against Trump is yet another example. This reflects a tendency of Americans (of every political stripe) toward a binary way of thinking...us-them, good guys-bad guys, Republicans-Democrats, etc.. And within US public dialogue on any issue, people have a strong tendency to force people into one of only two possible factions...if you critique Joe Biden then you must be a Trump supporter, if you critique US policy in Ukraine you must be a Putin apologist, if you challenge the US strategy in Syria then you are a supporter of the Assad regime, and so on. In my view, this not only fails to capture the reality of any situation, hence handicapping our ability to achieve genuine understanding as a society, but it is also destructive and toxic to dialogue itself. The binary framing is a pair of handcuffs on the possibility of what can be said and discussed in the public arena.
Such binary division is a cornerstone for state propaganda. It simplifies things eliminating the ability of critical thinking. So that population of the country could not criticize its own gvt's policies.

Professor Cohen sets his arguments out with clarity and force in War with Russia and Soviet Fates and Lost Alternatives. He reminds me of J K Galbraith who continued to press his powerful perspective, even during the mad ascendancy of monetarist who eventually gifted us the 2007 fiscal crisis and the huge inequality in wealth and income measured by Piketty. Great, wise men who refuse to be swept away by propagandists and truth twisters. As Professor Cohen points out, the stakes are very high indeed.
I recall listening to the professor on the John Bachelor radio show… I was impressed with him back than… but holy smokes was this man spot on back then…. He knows of what he speaks….
When every single person you come across - including your own wife! - feels the need to point out that they "don't agree with everything he says," you know you're onto something really big. Huge, huge, huge kudos to Prof Cohen!
Cohen is not wise, because he fails to recognize the truth that Putin is a murderous, venal thug, and because Cohen's policy recommendations would lead to disasters if implemented.
@@thetipsymankey - I've listened to Cohen for many years. I recognize that Russia is a great civilization with a legitimate place in the world, but not as a corrupt, xenaphobic thugocracy. Russia under Putin is steadily steaming to decline. After disolution of the USSR what Russia needed most was to establish roots of real democracy and the rule of law. Russia might have been saved if after 1990 deliberate steps were taken to transition from authoritarian rule to a stable, Western-oriented free-market democracy. But both Yeltsin and Putin were disinterested in pursuing that vision under the rule of law. Russia now is in irreversible decline. It is vulnerable to a breakup which could involve civil war with parts of its territory devoured by greedy neighbors like China.
@@johnmaxwell1750 I’m sorry but you got it totally wrong friend. The whole thing is complex and complicated to explain really from Boris Yeltsin to Putin. But also , that’s not the point of Cohen. His point in every talk is: We cannot blame Russia for everything. That’s all. From the Georgian war to the Ukraine crisis. The west has its part. I’ve listened to the late Prof Cohen Carefully. All his Statements were too meant that the West has to be blamed as well. It’s not just Russia fault every time. When it comes to economy , growth prosperity fine it’s something else. But let’s Russian judge accordingly. Knowing the 1990s crisis and poverty in Russia, we can all talk because we haven’t lived there to see how horrible it was really ans How Putin has made Russia glorious. I don’t say that his regime or Putin is perfect. But we , westerners tend to just see from an eye.
@@thetipsymankey- The bottom line is that Russia must save itself. It was never the responsibility of the US or the West to save Russia after the USSR folded. It was ultimately the responsibility of the Russian people to stop Yeltsin, Putin and the oligarchs from stealing the country blind. The only real hope for Russia has been people like Magnitsky, Nemtsov, Kasparov, and Navalny, supported by a free press and by the Russian people. But the people gave Putin their allegiance and allowed him to get entrenched. Now there is little hope for Russia as long as Putin murders his critics, like Anna Politkovskaya, Magnitsky, and Sergei Yushenkov, and his political opponents like Nemtsov. Cohen always knew damn well this was happening but never adequately addressed it. As a devout leftist Cohen was more comfortable assigning blame to the US. Don't be like Cohen. Don't make excuses for Putin the murderer and Putin the thug. Given Putin's past behavior, there are legitimate reasons for the US to fear him as long as he controls weapons of mass destruction. Cohen's relentless efforts to deflect blame to the US and to the West for Russian misbehavior have always been ridiculous. Since the USSR breakup all Russia has needed to do to get along with the US and the West has been to establish democracy, the rule of law, and to respect for human rights. None of that yet exists in Russia today.
Always, always, always keep your views in check and let them bend but not break. I feel I was Dan Rather during this conversation, now I am Stephen Cohen.
I have nothing but admiration and respect for Stephen Cohen and nothing but contempt for Dan Rather who is just another professional liar at the behest and on behalf of the war criminals and banksters.
It's ironic that John Paul Jones, a US Revolutionary War hero, was the Admiral of the Russian Navy who won the Crimea for Catherine the Great of Russia. No, Crimea was never a part of Ukraine.
I just learned that this brilliant man passed away. Thank you mr.Cohen for making my time as an Eastern European studies student a fascinating time with a different perspective on modern russian history.
Nothing they said was terribly at odds with Cohen, and Cohen's views - while more responsibly presented than most anything you'll see in the media - are much more in line with Rather and Katrina than those that defend Trump. Questioning Trump's motives is not the same as hating him, and we've moved ourselves too far into that soft authoritarianism Cohen speaks of if that questioning is a problem for you. The U.S. pushing further into authoritarianism is the main concern of most that were/are opposed to Trump, and that concern isn't a partisan thing.
@@tmad8816 it was ok to not just question Trump’s motives but falsely accuse, then impeach him of things he didn’t do while you give Bill Clinton and previous Democrat Presidents a pass for interfering in Russian/USSR elections? That is nothing more than the total hypocrisy that we’ve heard and seen for years from Democrats like yourself.
@@mirrorneurongirl Weird that it's the GOP that's in bed with authoritarians around the world (Orban, Putin, etc.) then. You watch any Tucker Carlson lately? I'm far more concerned about the attack on our electoral system, of which the far right is clearly the biggest problem. And before you say sToP tHe StEaL, Trump has literally cried foul in every election he's been involved with, including primaries and ones he's won. No intelligent person would fall for that over and over again unless they were completely blinded by their bias.
@@tmad8816 as an outsider, I struggle to see how Trump can be viewed even remotely as an authoritarian figure. The guy tends to bark and yapp for sure, but look closer, he got blocked at every turn by Congress, by his own cabinet, by his party. Does it look like an image of authoritarianism to you? I might be tempted to agree with your take on their dislike of Trump, but to me their dislike is apparent and appears irrational. "Why hasn't Trump ever publicly bashed Putin", seriously? Maybe because that would be counterproductive and senseless? They're just being childish there.
Yes, far too much pussy footing going on ....little wonder with Cohen's family tied up with the Council on Foreign Relations, his wife being a member of it.
@@rrozoff1 Actually, having Rather there was what screwed this up.....and it's pre Mueller Report too. Also, it's a book selling exercise, which will have what you want.....so read it. Besides, the real power lies with the federal judiciary, and "the people" have absolutely no voice, or recourse in this branch, and never have.
The McCarthyism charge by Professor Cohen was spot on and is exactly what we are going through today. Dan would have been wise to understand it back then. Many in the independent media were on to it as well. He was also right about Russiagate in spite of the doubts of the other two! The master at work.
AND.....US hostilities toward Russia have been a blessing to the Chinese. They now have a close alliance with a country that has the natural resources and advanced weaponry they lack. The US has created an entity that levels the playing field for the first time since WW II.
Unless chaos and instability are exactly the goal aimed at :) And the US security and weapon manufacturing industry love that. They love inventing "enemies" to fight against ..and "allies" to sell weapons and gadgets to.
US hostilities is a curse for the whole planet. The Chinese least of all want to be faced with a Vicious racist jealous warmongering psychopathic triggerhappy nuclear power. The good relations with Russia is simply the result their customary rational pragmatism.
I am an American. I care about ordinary Russians under Putin. See my comments here to Cosmoevents21st if you think I look at the world through.the prism of US politics.
Prof. Cohen makes so much sense and his logic so convincing that he has totally reshaped my knowledge of American foreign policy vis a vis Russia. We are definitely living in a more dangerous Cod war.

Great discussion, it is as if Stephen Cohen is speaking today March 13th 2022, a man with a great and impressive foresight, that is a true political and intelligence analyst. Dan Rather was wrong about the interference of Russia in the US election.
I live in Russia 50% and in Canada, 50% and I don't have to say the obvious as to how prophetic Prof. Cohen lays bare reality. The Russia-based name-calling by the unwashed has contaminated normal course diplomacy and could eventually lead to shortages of potassium iodide at your local pharmacy.
One thing really stands out of this debate: Concerns that Trump never said anything directly negative about Putin. Is this a prerequisite of being proper American? Has anybody heard president Putin speak? It appears that most of them did not bother, probably because of their sense of superiority. When Putin speaks, he consistently speaks of work to defend Russia, improving economy and living standards of Russians and maintaining the peace. No badmouthing, no provocations, no personal attacks against any politician, no overexagerated reactions to numerous smearing against him. He follows his plan without any drama. It is difficult not to like him. I do not blame Trump for being civil towards him. So neocons make up stories about Putin and Rusdia to keep the Americans kept in dark pressing this Russiagate story. Putin cares about his nation. Is this perhaps covert American jealousy ? The gentleman from Texas is nice man but he has no clue what is going on at the other part of the planet. Mr. Cohen lived in Russia, studied it on depth and he is quite aware. My impression is that he really holds back because it is not allowed in US today to be deviated from the prescribed narrative. I have deep respect for Mr. Cohen for his courage.
Trump has mostly said nice things about other leaders, obviously because he recognizes that it's a good idea to leave open the chance to have good relations with those leaders.
I think that the BEST way to REALLY understand what is happening on the GROUND in Russia, is simply to go to Russia and take a look for yourself... I mean damn, its less than $1000 plane ticket from NYC to Moscow/St. Petersburg... Go For a week, you dont need a VISA if you travel to St. Petersburg for a week or less... You can easily find good places to stay in the heart of the city for less than $50/night via AirBnB... Just go, look around, talk to people, and make up your own mind based on what you see and experience yourself... Mainstream media in US so sooooo biased and full of shit its unbelievable... I cant believe that they are still being considered to be NEWS AGENCIES... they are Bullshit/Propaganda blow horns... PERIOD... Also, Stephen Cohen is THE EXPERT on Russia in the Western world... this guy actually UNDERSTANDS how Russians think... and i havent heard anything obscene or idiotic out of him... if anything, i would say his only problem is that he is TOO ACCURATE on Russia/America relations...
So Dan Rather questions Trumps motives because Trump never criticize Russia, but he doesn't question main stream media for their 96% negative stories on the president. He is trying to preach context? I don't think so.

Such wisdom from Mr. Cohen. Too bad so few take the time to listen to him.
Cohen is not wise, because he fails to recognize the truth that Putin is a murderous, venal thug, and because Cohen's policy recommendations would lead to disasters if implemented.
@@johnmaxwell1750 Too bad you are one of those who can’t take time to listen to him.
Steve Cohen here demonstrates the kind of intellectual honesty and curiosity that is so lacking today on both sides of the political spectrum.
Now I need his book more than ever
February 2022. Looks like his prediction came true. 😔
To end on a positive note, I've followed Profession Cohen for many years and find it a great tragedy that he has been excluded from MSM.
RIP Prof. Cohen. You’re truly missed especially during these terrible times.
Mr Cohen is an honest man with common sense which is out of supply these days . RIP.
Always, always, always keep your views in check and let them bend but not break. I feel I was Dan Rather during this conversation, now I am Stephen Cohen.
Stephen Cohen called it ! Damn
Stephen Cohen is a very Inteligent, erudit and brave US citizen that must be aplauded and admired by everyone who cares for Justice!
This should have 71,000,000 views 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✊🏼
I have nothing but admiration and respect for Stephen Cohen and nothing but contempt for Dan Rather who is just another professional liar at the behest and on behalf of the war criminals and banksters.
I wish everyone could watch this now!!!
What a wonderful discussion - always great to list to Stephen Cohen - too bad to ruin it with Dan Rather.
It's ironic that John Paul Jones, a US Revolutionary War hero, was the Admiral of the Russian Navy who won the Crimea for Catherine the Great of Russia. No, Crimea was never a part of Ukraine.
Crimea was officially transferred from Russia to Ukraine in 1954, in a decree signed by Khrushchev.
Kaliningrad is not part of Russia.
Rip late professor Stephen H Cohen huge respect for him from N.east 🇮🇳
Prof. Cohen was so prescient. So intelligent and spot on.
A great relief to hear the historical context in order to better understand today's toxic political atmosphere. Looking forward to reading the book!
Same here..
I just learned that this brilliant man passed away. Thank you mr.Cohen for making my time as an Eastern European studies student a fascinating time with a different perspective on modern russian history.
Good riddance to one of Putin's puppets
@@ccie4101 lol you are doing your self the danger of living your life as an ignorant fool!
Dan Rather.... one of the Mockingbirds. Project Mockingbird that is.
Dan's contribution hasn't aged nearly as well as Stephen's
Clear minded at 80, we should all hope for that.
Miss this scholar, Respected Dr. Cohen.
I have just watched this program. It was amazing. Well done to all participants.
Wonderful S.Cohen is spot on
RIP

Katrina and Rather are struggling reconciling Stephen's knowledge with their hatred of Trump.
Trump Derangement Syndrome decimates common sense
@@tmad8816 it was ok to not just question Trump’s motives but falsely accuse, then impeach him of things he didn’t do while you give Bill Clinton and previous Democrat Presidents a pass for interfering in Russian/USSR elections? That is nothing more than the total hypocrisy that we’ve heard and seen for years from Democrats like yourself.
@@mirrorneurongirl Weird that it's the GOP that's in bed with authoritarians around the world (Orban, Putin, etc.) then. You watch any Tucker Carlson lately? Or any of the CPAC speeches from Hungary (even just the fact it was held there...)? I'm judging based on direct actions/quotes, and that's not media spin like I'm sure you'll claim.
Thank you, Stephen Cohen. Sorry that you found it important to be so cautious. The level of discourse is so shallow.
He had to share his bed that night with the creature who looks for the world like the singer in KISS without the greasepaint.
Yes, far too much pussy footing going on ....little wonder with Cohen's family tied up with the Council on Foreign Relations, his wife being a member of it.
@@rrozoff1 Actually, having Rather there was what screwed this up.....and it's pre Mueller Report too. Also, it's a book selling exercise,
which will have what you want.....so read it. It may be a losing enterprise, since the normal american doesn't read, while the
internet has democratised "ignorance"....and it's very sad to see anyone of supposed intellectual integrity to refer to
what exists here as a "democracy" by any stretch.....because electing people who don't represent you, makes using the word
a sick joke. Besides, the real power lies with the federal judiciary, and "the people" have absolutely no voice, or recourse
in this branch, and never have.
How wrong you were.
Hey , US /deep state =Israel is as hostile to China as to Russia. --- www.globalresearch.ca/battle-ages-stop-eurasian-integration/5700890
Unless chaos and instability are exactly the goal aimed at :)
And the US security and weapon manufacturing industry love that.
RIP & thank you Stephen. I bought the book recently.
Stephen was Super accurate , Katrina was a cool operator and Dan looked a little dumb and out of his depth.
I often have an impression that people in USA look at what happens in the world through the prism of their internal politics.
I am an American. I care about ordinary Russians under Putin. See my comments here to Cosmoevents21st if you think I look at the world through.the prism of US politics.
@@johnmaxwell1750 I am sorry, you don't understand what I am talking about. Please don't take everything that's being said personally. Peace.
You're Totally correct
I'm Canadian, and remember being taught that in senior high school history class in the late 1970's.
Today we can see that Professor Cohen has been right all along, what are we doing about correcting these mistakes.
Prof. Cohen makes so much sense and his logic so convincing that he has totally reshaped my knowledge of American foreign policy vis a vis Russia. We are definitely living in a more dangerous Cod war.
Stephen F. Cohen, prominent contemporary American scholar of Russia and USSR, friend of Gorbachev and adviser to Bush, Dies at 81
It is too bad that Dr. Cohen passed away. He was an honest American who wanted the world to know the truth. RIP.
Pozner, Mearsheimer and now Cohen,, finally , getting there slowly
1:04:00 Until you vote Trump out, you have to trust him to keep you safe if a crisis like this occurs. Well, you guys have Biden what happened now?........ Actual Crisis 😏
This is a good conversation considering the Ukrainian crisis today.
Great discussion, it is as if Stephen Cohen is speaking today March 13th 2022, a man with a great and impressive foresight, that is a true political and intelligence analyst.
Dan Rather was wrong about the interference of Russia in the US election.
Cohen is so smart just simply deduce logic with simple facts!
We were unworthy of Steve I wrote him he was a very thoughtful and caring man.
Stephen F Cohen = HERO. Dan Rather = Lost and clueless.
😂 Whatever you do….Don’t mention the WAR!!
Dan Rather is not insightful and asks bad questions.
Yep
Totally clueless
Looks like the warmongers have got what they wanted. Now what? Look how right he was about freedom to disagree
It has been so blatant it was pretty plain even to me as a layman. Professor Cohen is sorely missed. He would have been so valuable now
So Putin’s unjustified and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine was just what the ‘warmongers’ wanted? Fascinating.
Dan Rather never fails to disappoint…
I miss him sooooo much !
How I miss Steve's Tuesday night sessions on the John Batchelor Show!
The first 10 mins are 10000000000000% spot on! The rest is prophetic!
Prof. Cohen represents America at its best!
That's what the Chinese say too - come and look for yourselves
Steve Cohen got it right on everything...and that's scary.
The loathing for Trump may well have to do with his quest for peace, which is anathema to many.
Allowing the cleaning of the Kurds is a quest for peace?
His quest for what? What are you smoking?
@@chrish2629
He was never a hawk, except to black people, what has always been foremost on his mind was money. He wanted that hotel in Moscow.
Every American citizen should watch this video.
It's nice to have places to go that makes you think, more than react.
You want some back up for Cohen's belief's? Ask Ray McGovern and Bill Binney.
So Dan Rather questions Trumps motives because Trump never criticize Russia, but he doesn't question main stream media for their 96% negative stories on the president. He is trying to preach context? I don't think so.
16:55 Steve’s wife mentions congressman rho khana was vilified for criticizing neo-nazi militias in Ukraine. Nothing Has changed, and this aspect of whether defending Ukraine is prioblematic remains subject of derision.

I stay around the whole hour watching and listen to this Interview and I had to thank you three for one of the BEST but I had a Question why America worry about Russia interfere with their Election but America did this to about every Country in this World or change Elected Officials by the PEOPLE of their Country if America don't like them because they don't do what AMERICAN WANTS
Cohen would, I think, be beyond horrified at how hellbent NATO seems to be to out-escalate Putin in Ukraine. Good to at least have his book out and available. I saw it displayed in my public library here in Indiana, and snatched it up, devouring it now. Hope future generations get a chance to read it. Or anything.
