He is playing the tagelharpa, and the horse hair is a bit loose on the bow, so you have to pull it tight with your fingers to create enough tension to use it. It would be hard to play it like a violin. I just bought one, and am learning how to play it. I love the sound.

He is playing on something called a "Taglharpe" tagl means = horsehair.
