Yeah I had bought a Matco tool box that was my career box . It was $4,500 and before I had got laid off I had the dept down to about $2800 . I found a new job right away and tried sending payments into my dealer but kept getting them back . Well I found out that in between the time I was laid off and my next payment that was do that my dealer had retired and moved and that he had sold his truck and everything . Well by time the new owner tuck over the old owner had cleared all dept. that was owed to him . When he died I found out he was worth millions and he wanted to give back . Couldn’t believe it .

The whole point of the video is about being young, stupid, and directionless. He could have just said "borrowing money to buy overpriced tools is a bad idea." But real life perspectives dont always fit into a tight 3-minute block. There were a million small things that lead him into a bad proposition.

I'm a debt collector. This man is giving good advice. Don't take out debt unless its absolutely necessary. The only thing I owe money on is my house. And, yes, buy a house on credit is fine because you can get a deduction on taxes; just don't over buy. Keep the house modest.
I have never met anyone who didn't makes mistakes and I think it is cool that you can share this to help others. Thanks. I am impressed by how you worked to fix the problem and it shows you are a solid guy. Your number will recover. There are tricks to speed it up so I advise researching the topic.
Pro tip - if you can’t pay cash don’t buy it... Only exceptions, a house and maybe a car (if you can afford it...)

I'm going to give you a thumbs-up because I work at an oil change place and a tire technician just blew $7,500 on tools that he doesn't really need to use just yet. The snap on guy was so happy he gave him a T-shirt and a sweatshirt and a hat.. the 19 year old kid does not even own a credit card yet. Driving around his Rusty Dodge Hemi pickup truck. $300 a week paycheck.. I see this everyday a kid picks up a wrench falls in love and I ows about two hundred and fifty dollars

I was a Snap-On tool dealer in the late 80's, and over the years I was active, typically had over $125K per year of my own monies extended in tool credit to guys on my list of calls (local shops). The big ticket items like boxes, scanners, alignment rigs are through a loan (think bank car loan) with the Snap-On corporation, and not the dealer. If you don't pay your car loan they repossess those too! I never over sold anyone, because I'd been a line mechanic myself before becoming a dealer. I typically tried to convince the young guys starting not to buy the big box, not to buy the biggest set of wrenches (half of which they may never use). What I got for being stand-up, was guys skipping out and leaving me with about $30K of unpaid debt each year, so forgive me if I'm not exactly the most sympathetic ear. I remember having to wait in the dark to catch people trying to sneak home without paying, and women suggesting I was stealing the food from their babies mouths. Seems my debt/risk for the extended credit was inconsequential. Often when I'd finally catch up with someone that had skipped, they'd laugh and say, "what're you going to do about it". Well there's something that can be done, and it may not affect today, but it'll haunt for a long time. Years later when they were trying to clear their credit record, and called me to see if there was something they could do to satisfy the debt. I told them they could call the trustee for my bankruptcy hearing, as I'd been put out of business as result of people not paying me for tools I'd extended on credit.

My snap on dealer told me that around half of all snap on truck tool dealers end up in Bankruptcy. He got lucky it only cost him $60,000 to get out then he became an independent tool dealer. That was a win win for all of us, awesome quality tools at Waayyy better prices!!!!!!!!! Snap on can suckit!!!!!!!

I'm a car salesman and have worked in dealerships for 15 years. I like to tinker at home with vehicles and good tools are always essential. I would always look for the technician who was experienced and single with no kids and tell him, "if you ever want to upgrade and sell some of your old stuff let me know." Within a week he was getting the "latest and greatest" and I was getting his "old" stuff. I have a garage full of awesome tools!
Buy a US general tool box at harbor freight. Put a snap on logo plate on it. I’d bet 90% of the people who saw it would say you have a gorgeous roll away and never know the difference!

I don’t think most people would know a snap on box from a US General if you took the US General name off. I have both brands of boxes and I’m happy with the US General fit, finish and overall build.
Fireship1 the smart way is to buy an older snap on box off of Craigslist for less than half the cost of a new one and then have the worn out slides and wheels replaced under warranty. Smartest way to get a high quality tool box that doesn’t fall apart like a US general.

A few months ago my snap on dealer and I agreed I’d like to get a stainless steel top for my tool box. He went to the truck and found the one I wanted and came back with a receipt for it. It was about $500 which was a lot more than I thought it would be but I agreed anyway. Has it shipped to the place I work and it was the wrong size. Next week he comes in and I told him about it and he orders me a new one. Afterwards he tells me the price before was for the smaller sized top and $800 was the new price. He told me if that was too much for me that it was alright if I didn’t want it. I told him I was sorry but I couldn’t pay that much for a box top. I felt bad for him because I knew he was out 1300+ over a simple typing mistake but me feeling bad for him didn’t justify spending that much more than I expected for a tool box top in my head. It gets worse for the snap on dealer from there. Few weeks later he was selling a tool box to a coworker of mine and for Christmas he had a $700 off deal going on for some boxes. Well I suppose he had it set up in the computer to deduct the $700 from the normal price but I guess he goofed up and typed in the price of the box after the deduction of which got further auto-decreased by another 700 as he confirmed the payment. The box was slightly damaged so even before all of it he had the price lowered a lot and even included the $800 tool box top that was supposed to be for me put on it as well. My coworker got a snap on box that’s over 7k new just for the basic version with a special pant job on it and the stainless steel top for like 3400 I think my coworker said he paid. In just a few weeks the snap on guy lost over 2k out of his pocket for simple typos. Yeah both incidents were caused because of him making a mistake but no matter what you may think about the snap on brand, you have to respect the risk and the hustle the dealers have to take to do their job.

Im 21yo been mechanic for only 2years. And couple months ago bought a brand new 7grand CAD* Snap-On tool box off the tool truck and man it was the best purchase ive ever made. It made me wanna buy more and better tools to put in it. That is why i suggest buying a good tool box before spending on tools that you dont have room for

What you need to do is go to a credit union. You're paying way too much intrest (28.5%) If you have things in order they might pay off that ridiculous loan, give you a new loan at a much better rate. I've helped people do this successfully.

Everyone that disliked the video probably cry when they hear the truth lol. If I had this info when I was younger it would have helped me to this day my credit is still getting repaired all because I over extended my credit meaning I owed more than I made but lesson learned!
Another honest, good video! You warm my heart buddy! That's how I was raised also. Be honest, pay your debts, work hard. I misdiagnosed a Cummins here awhile ago when I still had my own repair shop. Didn't tell my customer right away, couldn't sleep at night it bothered me so bad. Drove over to his house one night and just spilled the beans! Told him I was sorry. We agreed I would work the debt off on his next repairs. We shook hands, he laughed and said now go home and get some sleep buddy! I left with his friendship!

I liked the intensity of smoking that cig., I've never taken a puff, but I like seeing a person enjoying life. With the eagle on your right arm and the bottle of pills in the background, I wondered why you didn't use the vocational rehabilitation program at the VA. The little-known issue is the VR&E will work with the community college, pay for your snap-on or (your choice) of tools based on the course requirements. The Snap-on guys know this program and know how to make the list with the instructors. VR&E pays for the tools up front, you take the courses, they pay the tuition bill, and you receive the monthly stipend similar to the post 9/11 GI bill. Some people do not use up all their GI Bill, have a month left, then they go talk to the VR&E department about needing to get an education or certification, it is just like starting over on the I Bill. They will tell you they can not do it... you tell them Boy Scouts (Bravo Serria). The, now new, new "forever" GI Bill is even better than the post 9/11. The clock does not end at 10 years, it goes forever. there are a ton of benefits that Veterans know nothing about. If a Veteran receives a rating of permanent and total, they can work full time, their spouse goes to college under chapter 35, their kids go to college under chapter 35 benefits. Don't worry that you are taking it away from some other Veteran, they are being taken care of, only half of the Veterans use the A or anything. This is crazy. than you for your service 101st
Its not like starting the GI bill over. You have a set amount of months for education and they will extended it 12 months if you have a SEH.
@@sdpikapp you are technically correct, if the veteran is making progress but needs additional time to get the program completed there are ways that the VR&E can twist the rules, (Obliviously because the Veteran shows promise of becoming employed, his life is going the right direction the VA wants the Veteran to succeed. And they can find ways to get a person through whatever program that is needed to become employed using there skills abilities and interest. A veteran may have to appeal the decision going through a VSO to help represent the veteran in any hearing. The key is, the VA wants a person to succeed, they want to be responsible to the government but when it can be demonstrated that it makes sense to complete this one program they will do everything they can to make it happen. There are so many failures, persons that drop out of programs, that never become employed in the fields that the VR&E paid. When this is reviewed the auditors look at the 30 failed programs, they add up the o=money spent on failure, they take the ten successful programs and see that they needed to pay an additional $10,000 to get the quality graduates it makes sense to assist the winners and cut the loses on the losers. The government realize this and it becomes a very easy story to explain to the congressmen, to the news papers, The secretary of the VA has discretion to change any code of federal regulation and are mandated to provide reports to congress, but congress does not tell the 'Secretary how to run the VA no more than the Secretary tells the congressmen to run congress. When a person needs the additional two classes, or additional year, yo have the positive story from the college that wants to do right, it becomes a community feel good story, the VA has no intention of throwing a bucket of cold water on that parade. It rally's support from non-profit organizations, and citizens alike. They want to know they are making a difference in this persons life. The 30 that failed we do not use as poster child of success. We focus on the one. It would seem insane to put you hand up and say, we helped you with a, b, c. and you have one more step to go to quality for your license and we are cutting your legs off from underneath you. It is stuff like this that congressmen and women get excited about. It is the failure to make decisions by senior level administrators that only know how to read rule books. This is not way they have been entrusted to those positions, it is to make decisions. If they are not their to make decisions and we simply go by the rule book then there is no need of managers or higher level review. Read the actual Title 38 USC laws that congress passed with the presidents signature on it rather than the work books and "code of made up regulations to help the VA decide how they are going to implement these laws." Those training manuals, position papers, memorandums are all simply someones guidance of how to implement the law. But when the law is simple and clear provides the flexible room for decision to be made the the congressional office has a right to challenge those decisions.. In aggressus situations the news media helps to demonstrate the ridiculous position the VA has taken and how it has harmed a hard working veteran seeking to really make a difference. When good cause is demonstrated the VR&E will do everything they can to assist the Veteran.And if someone gets limited by the law then they should turn to their congressmen and ask for a special dispensation. As a pocket plan stick within the guidelines they have provided, work with your counselor t help you stay on track.But don't give up when you are one semester away from completing the program. I know of dealerships that will pay for all the expenses to help a veteran became certified in their products (GM, Ford,) Where the owner of the company will foot the bill 100% with out any VR&E money, on the job training with all of their advanced training seminars and programs. The VR&E does not keep a lost of companies that are willing to do these kind of partnerships, they receive zero federal tax dollars, but the soldier receives some of the best education available. The reason is this young business owner became successful, but he has a father that was a Vietnam Veteran that did not do so well, there was no one to help his father out, people too stuck in following the book and not making leadership decisions.
The problem with a $5500 tool box is that its not worth any where close to that on CL, or anywhere else for that matter later down the road.
I bought a Snap On four bank monster a few years before I ended up making a career change. I bought the box for cash, got a half decent deal all things considering. A year after I got out of the business, I spoke to the SO dealer at at that time to see if he was interested in either buying or selling the box for me. I was keeping the tools, but the box wouldn't fit in my garage. The box had a retail price of just over $18k. It was 14 months old.
I told the dealer I'd let the whole box with the SS top and full top hutch, and both lockers go for $8K. He tells me its only worth $3500 to him, but could only give me $1800 for it. I listed it for sale on CL and FB and got only scammers or guys with no cash wanting to trade junk.
A similar box these days costs over $20k.
Selling a used box for anywhere close to what its worth is near impossible because most mechanics are broke and they can only buy things for $20 a week.
I've got a couple of US General boxes here, they're ok boxes but they're not Snap On, the slides and spot welds don't hold up to hard day in day out use and many have lower support issues related to how the casters are attached.
They are just fine for a guy just starting out or the homeowner who doesn't require super tough security. I'm not sure I'd trust one if I were back working in a busy dealership where having a secure way to protect your tools is a must.
Depending on how the interest is calculated 160 twice a month can pay off faster than 320 once each month.

The lesson to learn here is "do not borrow money". Certainly "do not borrow money to buy things that go DOWN in value".
I wouldn't buy a snap on box unless it was 80 percent off period. It's not worth the price. You can buy so many other boxes now for an 1/8 of the price it just doesnt make sense. Harbor freight has some really sweet boxes now. It's hard to not buy one.

After a couple years of daily use you have to put your foot against the box to open it. My snap-on box I use the open drawers as a seat. Took me 10 years to see the light and upgrade my box. Love it so much I picked up another used snap-on box for my home garage.
used is the way to go. and i understand if you use it all day long for your life career it will pay for itself. ive had a craftsman chest and roller for over a year and use it pretty heavily every day and i love it so far. i just think its nuts when people rack up a bill that could pay for a new car on a half a box of tools.

if you took the money it costs for a snap on box and put it into a dividend investment you could buy a new toolbox every couple years with the profit.
I’m thankful to have an understand dealer. The guy is just awesome and understanding to deal with. I fell on some tough times going from one job to another this last year. Short story is I pawned him a couple of rifles while I was short for cash.

When I was doing bodywork I just told the tool trucks that stoped at the shop to let me know when they had any used boxes for sale. I ended up buying 4 of them and I didn't pay over $400 for any of them. 3 were 5'L × 5'H and 1 cart. Shure they had some rust and dings but they work just fine and I didn't have to be worried about scratching them. Had to quit for health reasons and sold them for more than I paid for them.
Preach it brother. I've been down that road to many times. It's like a damn rollercoaster. The ups will always go down if you are not careful.
Besides, if you can't pay cash (house/car not included) you dont need a loan for it.
Moral of the story is don't finance super expensive tools when you're just starting out.

I remember when my dad left snap on after 30 years. I was a kid and went around with him to finish off his collections. Some of the excuses I heard were unreal. My dad let most of the guys off if they had a rough go, but the assholes didn’t get off easy. Blows my mind how bad some people are with money. Buy what you can afford. Save and buy.

Tool truck operators are usually up working before the shops open and often still working when the shops are closed trying to feed their families. I guess they are scum if they don't accept theft.

Actually during this timeframe of debt with snap-on I road a bicycle 14 miles a day. Then as I started making better money at a different dealership it was too far to ride a bike I purchased & drove a beater which always had problems and it was not reliable and interfered with my ability to get to and from work. I then took a high interest loan on a more reliable car but was then stuck with a payment. Fast forward to today ... I'm now back in a beater.. Everyone has a path. Some paths have more curves then others. Just thought I'd share a comment back. Cheers and thanks for your comment.

Ignoring a debt is one of the worst things you can do... it'll ruin you for years. My girlfriends brother ignored collection agencies for 2-3 years, and his credit is completely ruined and he cant even get a loan on a beater car to drive.
Everyone makes poor choices, the key is not repeating them. Learn from a mistake and pay off a loan as fast as possible!

About 25 yrs ago I had someone use my ss number, ID, and racked up a 3000 dollar debt on an American Express card. That was back before the internet and the communications we have now. First I heard about it was when a collection agency contacted me wanting payment. Told them I never had an Amer Exp card. They were like "yeah sure bud, thats what they all say". Not realizing what was going on, I told them to fuck off. They literally harassed me for 10 fucking years, ruined my credit rating, etc... I wrote all the credit agencies asking to remove that off my rating which they would, but a year later, the debt would show up again. What a headache.

I've been a self-employed gas/diesel mechanic with around 35+ yrs of experience and have used Mac, Snap-On, Matco tools for allot of years. I also still use S-K, Craftsman, Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee, and Harbor Freight tools also because I personally don't give a crap about name brands on tools, Quality & Pricing is my general rule of thumb. Years ago when I opened my first shop my Mac and Snap-On dealers gave me a line of credit for me to get started out of their own pockets "Not" Mac Tool Corp. or Snap-On Tool Corp! These Corporations have never done anything, nor have went out of there way to help me do anything over the years. My Mac and Snap-On dealers were Old-School and I had the up most respect for both of them in helping get started in my first repair business. I haven't bought any tool dealers trucks in allot of years because those dealers seem to only want to sell new tool boxes and other high end tools and not provide not to much repair, or warranty services. So I guess the times have changed, however years ago the tool dealers had a different attitude and spent more time with customer service & quality , and making deals on tools.
A real mechanic only needs a crescent wrench and a flat head screwdriver

Ya know what happened when I didn't pay my Matco debt? It was written/paid off by my tool guy! My guy was extremely understanding. When my daughter passed away and I lost my job about 60 days later, he cut me a break. I only owed around $40 or $50 on an impact gun but that doesn't matter. It's the general principle. He understood. And cut me a break. I kept in touch with him. He continually had my current phone and address/contact info, so he could've easily filed charges on me. But he did not.
There ARE still good people in this world. Some of em even drive tool trucks.
The ironic part? I always stayed away from the trucks because I just knew that as soon as I got in debt, I'd lose my job and get my tools repo'd. Well I finally bought a badass impact. 3 months later, I had no job. Fuckin shit.
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!

I always bought tools with cash or on my debit card. The only thing I put on credit was a Matco toolbox which I knew I wouldn’t be able to pay off when the dealership I worked for went out of business.
Your best bet is “voluntary repossession”. I don’t know if this is normal practice, but my Matco dealer tried to sell it as soon as I turned it over to him. And he even called to ask me if an offer he got of $4,500 was enough. I said “I think he can do a little better, don’t you?” and he finally got $5,500, leaving me with only a few hundred dollars left to pay off.
A voluntary repossession still hurts your credit, but it’s no where as bad as missing payments and having a company go to a collection agency. My credit only dipped by ~50 points compared to my coworker who sold a box he still owed money on and ignored the calls until it went to collections. His score went down 160 points.
The big difference is that you are punished SEVERELY when you have something called an “unsecured debt”. An unsecured debt is a loan that is not backed or is no longer backed by an asset. A medical bill is insecure debt because it is not backed by an asset, the bank cannot repossession your kidney transplant.
A toolbox is a secured debt because they can repossess the toolbox. But once you sell it, it is now an unsecured debt which significantly increases the risk for the lender which is why harsher penalties are enforced.

I went to UTI, we also had a snap on deal. Bought some sockets, an impact gun and a couple torque wrenches. Couldn’t pass up the 50% off deal. They also give you a little credit if you graduate.

My husband owed Snap on 22K what we did was refused to pay them went to a BK Lawyer worked out a settlement agreement the lawyer got 20% off what she could save up long story short we paid 6k kept all the tools/Box etc our credit was fixed in 6 months and my husband is now on his feet 9 years later doing great with his business Snap on prays on young guys FUCK SNAP ON !

I've dealt with small amounts of debt before that I basically just didn't care enough to pay, it's stupid I know but I just didn't care about my credit score as I didn't plan on buying a house or anything anytime soon.
Basically, depending on your state, it'll eventually go through enough collections companies that a lawyer will sue you and then you're fucked. That's what happened to me. And if they send you a letter and you don't respond at all you are basically admitting guilt and a court can get a judgement on you and seize your bank account and/or garnish your wages.
So now I'm paying like $80/mo for like $2k of debt. What this guy doesn't seem to understand is that the collections agencies have bought your debt from snap-on and they probably bought it for less than what the original debt is worth, which is why you can settle for much less than the original amount.
I'm currently a student in the diesel program snap on currently offers damn near everything at 50 percent off boxes and diagnostic equipment alike
I wonder if they offer different selections based on programs. I’m in manufacturing and they do offer automotive diagnostics tools, but not at very much of a discount.
Even at 50% off, most of their stuff is still way overpriced for what it is. There are way better deals with other professional grade brands, especially when you're just starting out.
Don't do it. A better and cheaper way to get great deals on awesome tools is to go to flea markets and yard sales. You can find hand tools and smaller tool boxes for pennies on the dollar. Open box/return or display tool boxed at harbor freight for half off their already lower prices than off the tool truck.

When you signed that contract you agreed to pay a certain amount EVERY week. YOU defaulted for whatever reason. Default on your mortgage payment and your ass is on the street. Nobody made you buy those tools fool! PAY YOUR BILLS. I wrenched for 28 years before becoming a Snap-on dealer for 15 years. Sold my route, inventory, truck and accounts to an expanding dealer. It’s losers like you that cause issues.
been there with debt, different reasons but same result. I just went to collections and waited 7 years for it to go away. That was 10 years ago and i have a 750 now. learned my lesson, i pay my bills now.

I've been on a Cash only budget mentality for the past 12 years now and it's the best thing I've ever done for my self. If I can't pay cash for it, I don't need it. Credit is nice to have in case of an emergency, but all too often, people get caught up in being momentarily blinded by their buying power and not their liquid assets and budget. Cheers Buddy. You made two of the biggest financial mistakes a guy can make: getting involved with Snap-on and getting married, which of course led to divorce as it so often does (which allows a divorce court judge to legally steal as much of your stuff/money as he/she wants to and give it to your ex).
you know you have a tool addiction when you owe over 30k and then you have to get a second mortgage on your house to pay them off because the interest rate is crazy with snapon corp.
