Nice to walk with you over the Messe. You look "Frisch wie der Frühling" (loosely translated: full of energy) when leaving the event. I would propably look pretty tired at the end. Have fun.
Finally! I was on first day there and keep an eye spotting you but never saw you. Next year you'll have to make a official meeting! Oh - next year the Spiel will be started on October 3rd, which is a national holiday in germany, so prepare that it will get even more crowded!
Blueprints of Mad King Ludwig 🤩 ! Do you know the Game with the same name Blueprints by ZMAN ? It's a very enjoyable game of placing dice ! Thanks for this visit ! No Essen for me, I don't have the level in English and even worse in German ! Do you think You will come at Cannes in France in february ?
Thanks for the video and the experiences at Essen Speil! Also hoping Silver & Gold Pyramids comes stateside; we wouldn't want to disappoint the great Phil Walker-Harding. 🙌
I was there on Thursday and Friday. I ran into a few other youtubers on Friday, which was really funny. Didn't see you or Matt though. Maybe next year! ;)
This was such a delightful video. Thanks for sharing. I doubt I'd ever get to go to SPIEL but if I did my first stop (if I didn't get visit with them sooner than) would have to be the Thundergryph Games booth. They are a publisher that has meant more to me over the last few years than most.
This is not a holodeck, I can witness that Paula was in Essen. I came home from Essen with her Final Girl card …… signed 😁 🎉🎉 Paula, it was a pleasure meeting you in real life.
Belated thanks for this video! It was quite refreshing and indeed interesting to see you pick about 98% different games than the mostly unison stuff german 'tubers were talking about - on the very same expo!
there were SO many games there - I was talking to someone else who attended and we saw completely different games. It's wild how big the show is! And I'm glad you enjoyed the vlog!
So nice to see Ta-Te Wu highlighted. He runs a game designer prototype meetup in L.A. and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Plus his games are really fun!
I used to own 5min mystery, it just didn’t hit the table as much as the others so was sold at airecon just last year, but I do recommend at least playing it once
Thank you for sharing your experience at Essen! I hope to one day take my family to Germany to see some of the beautiful sights. We just got new passports recently and are going to Europe soon. On a sidenote: I'm glad you noticed that the event promo art was AI generated. I understand trying to save money but it's kind of insulting to a community that include some of the best artists in any medium. Get some art you can afford or ask if you could use some of the art from some of the vendors present. I'm glad Spiel has a successful event and hope next year goes well too. I just hope they do better next time.
Same! The art was disappointing to say the least. I believe it was created by an outside company they hired to do their app/promotions but... they still had to approve it and it was just bad art all around. Enjoy your trip to Europe! It will be so much fun!
I met Paula by chance at the bakery and not directly at the Spiel. Nevertheless, it was great to meet her. She is also a very charming person in real life.
Shameless Plug: A lot of those games are coming to Philly for PAX Unplugged! I'm teaching games there and you (anyone watching this) should come (if you have the financial and logistical means to).
Were we at the same convention, Paula?!! I didn't even notice HALF the stuff you mention here* - and I thought I'd researched the new releases fairly well! 😲(OK, I guess with over 1000 new games no-one's goint to see everything!) *nor you... 😞
Enjoy your remote tour of game cons as I always do. Was not aware that there is still a mask mandate even after the pandemic. Was this a temporary reversal there in Germany or has it never been relaxed?
you kept going back to that first crazy picture. You just need to curl your hair a bit and put on a pair of glasses and you could totally recreate that picture with Matthew Jude. Maybe that's why you were so drawn to it. It basically looks like you and Matthew, if you were insane. (or... more insane?)
it depends on the con. They weren't for this one, but in a large crowd like this I still feel like wearing one. It helps with general Con Crud, as well!
@@PaulaDeming there's this funny trick with German words where if there are two vowels next to each other they make the sound of the second letter. So in Mainz the emphasis is on the 'i'. When I lived in Wiesbaden the 'e' was the emphasis. That's not even getting into w sounding like v.
yes, this was from this past October, 2023. I am still masking in very crowded situations for my own health and comfort. It's my choice and I haven't been getting sick at conventions so I'm pretty happy with it.
@@PaulaDeming you can do that on your own prerogative knowing that they have not proven masks have any effect, meta-analysis of randomized control trials. ua-cam.com/video/I5Xn7SeaUVI/v-deo.html
I love Devir, they'll just have a go at any theme, make it beautiful every time and retail it cheaper than equivalent other publisher's games.
Thanks for the video Paula, felt like I was trailing behind and hanging out. Well done. Thanks for taking me to Essen
aw, I'm so glad!
I'm interested in Jackie Fox's rock game, as well! :-D Looking forward to it!
Excellent stuff as always Paula.
This was such a fun vlog to watch! Essen looks so fun, thanks for sharing this trip and so many awesome games Paula!
aw, thanks Tim! That means a lot coming from you
interesting you traveled from king ludwig castle to Essen. If I go this year I'm hoping to travel to the castle after the con as well.
it was so worth the effort!
Nice to walk with you over the Messe. You look "Frisch wie der Frühling" (loosely translated: full of energy) when leaving the event. I would propably look pretty tired at the end. Have fun.
Thank you Paula! This was such a fun, vicarious Essen experience!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Oh - next year the Spiel will be started on October 3rd, which is a national holiday in germany, so prepare that it will get even more crowded!
it's crazy that it's such a big event that we can go all those days without running into people. So many people were there who I just never saw!
damn last time i was in essen on the games convention ... must be in the 90s xD
only been there for the amazing christmas market since

As a gastroenterologist boardgamer....no way I am getting the monkey game!
Thanks to give us the chance to visit Essen Spiel with you :)
Sweet video! It's great to see. Also those masks look comfy. Where did you get them and are they comfy?
I got them from Amazon - they're KF94 masks and the shape of them makes them so much more comfortable for my face
Loved seeing Ilka so much I MISS HER

hehe thank you!
I'm living vicariously thru ya! Wanna go!! ....2024???
Looks like you had lots of fun!! :D
It's such a fun trip to make and I'm lucky to have been able to do it twice now!
We love 5 Minute Mystery and it gets played to every board game con / gathering we go to !!
well now I want to try it even more!

he is truly a delight

I saw the train station at the beginning of the video and thought. Dann this looks exactly like the station next to my home town. Small world. :D
Small world for sure!
Thanks, Paula! Better late than never; I saw some things I hadn't seen in any other Essen vlogs. Will you be at PAXU this year?
Glad to be able to show you some different stuff! And yes I will be at PAXU!
A match made in heaven 🙂

I had no idea you were at Essen! Would have been great to say hello :)
Oh gosh that would have been so lovely! It's crazy to me that Essen is so big that I never ran into a bunch of people who I know where there
What did Matthew think about the accuracy of Taiwan Night Market? 😁
4:44 Google Lens says it's Totem Master
oh that makes sense
How did this experience compare to Gen Con?
Thank you Paula - but actualy you missed a few german stereotypes - you included Polka Music and Castles - but where is Beer & Bretzel?
consumed too quickly to catch on camera
I met Paula by chance at the bakery and not directly at the Spiel. Nevertheless, it was great to meet her. She is also a very charming person in real life.
It was so lovely meeting you! It made my morning :)
If you dropped by the Flat River booth I would've teached you Pyramido. I think you would've liked it. Or did you play that over at the Luzas?
I actually got to play it after Gen Con with the Murphs but ALSO Bo demo'd it for me at the Flat River booth at Essen :)
@@PaulaDeming Then you got the better teacher! 😉
Love your take on the cringy SPIEL artworks. When I was there I couldn't look away no matter how much I wanted to
oddly hypnotizing

Saw you at the event but was not sure if I should have said anything . Hope you had a pleasant time

Next year they will only use promo artworks that feature people with very serious faces who are concentrating on their next move ;) Also more fingers.

Enjoy your remote tour of game cons as I always do. Was not aware that there is still a mask mandate even after the pandemic. Was this a temporary reversal there in Germany or has it never been relaxed?
no mandate, just a personal choice to mask in a crowded event space. You'll notice most other people in the video aren't masked.
Other people? I always just watch you! Your friend was also face covered off the train so I misjudged the situation. These cons look exciting.
you kept going back to that first crazy picture. You just need to curl your hair a bit and put on a pair of glasses and you could totally recreate that picture with Matthew Jude. hahah okay we might have to do this
What a lovely video 😊 Are masks still recommended for cons?
it depends on the con. They weren't for this one, but in a large crowd like this I still feel like wearing one. It helps with general Con Crud, as well!
But how will I know I'm at a gaming con if a mask is preventing me from smelling the other people? I'd just feel like I'm missing out.
Iam on camera 5:28 🥳🥳🥳
Were you and Matthew compensated for the use of your likeness on all those posters, or can we look forward to you Vlogging the lawsuit in 2024?
Mainz is pronounced 'Mines'
you know what, that makes sense
@@PaulaDeming there's this funny trick with German words where if there are two vowels next to each other they make the sound of the second letter. So in Mainz the emphasis is on the 'i'. When I lived in Wiesbaden the 'e' was the emphasis. That's not even getting into w sounding like v.
War Deutschland schön?
sehr schon!
Unfortunately we could not met. 😥
Did you really say Bulgaria instead of Bavaria?
Nope, definitely said Bavaria but I'll work on my enunciation for future videos ;)
Are you of German ancestry yourself?
My maiden name is Schmitt so yes I am! Apparently our family is from the Bavaria area (hehe rhymes)
Was the footage from 2023? With the masks?
yes, this was from this past October, 2023. I am still masking in very crowded situations for my own health and comfort. It's my choice and I haven't been getting sick at conventions so I'm pretty happy with it.
no need to wear a mask in europe
No need to tell her she can wear one if she wants
@@kampfkeks6619 maybe she doesn't know the official rules
Hi there I choose to mask on public transport and in crowded gatherings, whether officially enforced or not.
Lose the masks 😂
Nah, I'll keep wearing one at big, crowded events like this. It helps me not get con crud and doesn't hurt anyone!

Do they have tours of Mad King Ludwig's castle, or do you have to settle for looking at it from the outside?
they do have tours! but you can't take pictures or video inside so I have no proof of the fact that we went on one
