I don't know, man. I haven't been feeling FT latest releases. I never thought I would ever cancel a FansToys preorder, but this is the third one I have cancelled. Two of those in a row. I guess I'm growing out of the hype and starting to be more objective with my collecting. It's not that I think these figures look bad, but more like I already have representation of those characters that are just as good. Namely XTB Hoist and MMC Shpinx/Mirage. I'm still planning on getting their Jazz, thought. Only because it's my favorite character. The other one I cancelled was that Astrotrain repaint. Totally unnecessary shelf space grabber that'll probably end up in his box. So I got rid of that hassle. But, who knows... maybe next week I'll change my mind but, as for right now... my FansToys super fan goggles are off. And they are making it easier with that horrible articulation. 😐
I'm right with you there Ariel, it's getting harder and less sense to trade up or fill in. For me it started with FTs Springer, Arcee, Huffer, Soundwave, Brawn, Outback, Croc, Huffer and now Mirage. I canceled PO on Movie Galvitron, Astrotain Redo, and both the Headmasters. I'm just not feeling the Need to Change out...Strange as it may seem.
Having had many conversations with fellow MP collectors, price hikes have forced us to be more discerning when considering swapping out when the gap between 3P companies isn’t as wide as it used to be. Other companies deliver more at a lower price, while FT has compromised to a degree that their products are no longer head and shoulders better than the competition. I bought Outrider, mainly because I didn’t already have a MP Trailbreaker, but have passed on Hoist and Mirage as I’m content using the XTB and MMC versions. I passed on Acoustic wave as well, Takara did an exceptional job and AW wasn’t enough of an upgrade. Unless FT Jazz is a massive improvement, I’ll be content to stick with my Downbeat, especially with the Toyhax stickers on mine. In the same vein, I don’t know how many Phoenix owners will be inclined to get the Takara Skyfire for the same reasons. There’s many of us that are feeling exactly as you are. If a figure doesn’t blow away the competition, it’s easier to be content with what we already have instead of laying out hundreds of dollars for minimal improvements.
I cancelled my preorder. FT really needs to bump up their articulation. I feel like they are going further and further backwards on it. Honestly other then paint I feel like TE is the better option.
I got this figure because I never upgraded and I think it's pretty solid. Was on the fence between this one and TE but no regrets. Transformation looks fun and not complicated. Great vid 💀 but I'm REALLY excited for Jives's release! I heard he's next!
Fanstoys is doing a great job in putting out products, very active year. Awesome. Typical great FT’s quality, feel and paint. Not much better than TE though so Im keeping both. TE is going in car mode and FT’s in bot mode, win win 👍. So looking forward to their jazz and Cliffjumper, and hey where is blitzwing!!! Lol
You mentioned MMC Sphinx - I'm honestly not even interested in a compare/contrast; it's the Transform Element versus that im interested in, as those figures are much closer and competing for the same space.
Looks great, but I like articulation, and the more interesting look of Sphinx (the brighter colored version). However, I'm sure that people who get him will be happy :)
Great review, and I personally would love to see a Sit Down Saturday addressing having to swap out characters because everyone is going for toon accuracy.
Awesome review! The figure looks great as well. Your descriptions of the painting and the closeup shots of the Headsculpts are always very helpful for blind people like me. 👍🏻 😃
What would it be if we didn't have another of Bobby's awesome sausage finger Transformers reviews. Ahhhh... I love the smell of sausage fingers in the morning
It's well painted, but for me; that's about it. Again with FT - there is something going on with their body to arms ratio that is a little off. Or maybe it's just the way it looks on camera and could be different in person. But when I see this, I see a big square for the body, maybe it's the big blue block in the back that's throwing it off on camera for me. The TE version has more of a curvature in the body and looks better proportioned body to arm ratio. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like FT is going with these skinny arms that looks off, they did it with their blaster and preceptor; and they seem to be doing it with Magnus. I'm all in on the Jazz and CliffJumper though, exited for those to drop. For me, I think TE is the better choice for Mirage. Everybody is talking about "when is my Deadend coming"; and I'm like "where is my Blitzwing!". Have a great day.
Love the MMC Alt mode... can't wait to see the versus as I like portions of both in bot mode... Knowing how solid FT builds are I may need to pick it up at some point just because.
I feel you about the hyper toon. I'm still on the fence about it since TW vs GT Devy. It'd be nice if they did both options like legends scale does. Or strike the perfect balance, if there is one. Thanks buddy.
Much agreed on wishing the spoiler and front race car piece were chrome.. even the main gun too. Even an alternate g1 toy head would've been cool too. Oh well 🤷♂️
how do you know that? thats what people told me about silver or chrome paint on Hunk's forearms theres no sign they even considered doing that. if you were sayin that about XTB, i'd believe you
@@robertban871 I have no idea why people have that idea. The only figures FT has done a metallic repaint are Phoenix and arguably the Dinobots (I don't really feel like the X Dinobots qualify, but some people might bring it up so I'll mention it). People seem to be convinced FT will do tons of repaints, but overall their repaint history after the Dinobots is very limited. We have had 40 or so figures since the Dinobots and 6 of those 40 (post dinobots figures) have any repaints at all. Seven if you count Rumble/Frenzy who are just separate characters.
@@cameronmoriarty3313 yeah they really dont have all that many, did they do the blue Terminus Giganticus? theres also a slightly different Cyclonus and the G1 toy Galvatron
@@robertban871 all their figures that have any repaints are Shockwave (3), the Dinobots (1 to 3 each), Skyfire (2), Bombshell (1), Omega Supreme (1), Galvatron (2), Cyclonus (1), and Astrotrain (2). You could throw in Rumble too for one more. Note the numbers are repaints only and exclude the originally released deco.
I have Phantasm on preorder, however, after seeing him next to Sphinx I'll stick with Sphinx. He blends better with the Takara bots and has a lot more 'character' in his robot form. Phantasm is too 'toonish' to blend well with Takara bots.
Fans Toys, make more official upgrade kits (like the optional parts that come packed with RP Soundwave.) I am sure a lot of us would pay extra to get the look we want, if we do not want pure G1, just do not take the piss on pricing them.
Not enough of an upgrade to replace TE-03 in my collection. That shoulder looked wonky as hell lol, and the lack of articulation like the ankles or ab crunch is just sad for a company like FT. I'm not a fanboy of any one particular company and I need more than "really" good paint and screw covers to make me switch a figure. I'm surprised how many of the cons of this figure got a pass, (what's up with that wrist gap 🙄) but I guess that's FT privilege 😂 and who knows maybe we'll have more veracity in the versus. Thanks for the video!
8:35 can we all just look at & appreciate how the early offerings were to where we are now. I’m glad I was able to get MMC Sphinx during my early collecting years. ToOn AcCuRaCy ruined “Definitive Masterpiece Aesthetic” and made it Plain, Flat, and Boring “JuSt LiKe ThE CaRtOoN”. I was hoping FansToys, eventhough they are catering to the Takara ToonTastic Masses, would have made it possible to add the alt mode pieces or more of a silver deco to the bot mode… similar to their Beachcomber. But unfortunately this is the sign of the times.
I don't know about this figure. It has the most toon-accurate chest but that's all it's got going for it. The articulation isn't great, and I hate the bar on the outside of the leg wheels. They try so hard to make it toon-accurate and then do weird things on one of Mirage's most prominent features. The alt-mode isn't terrible but it looks super panelly from the top, much moreso than the other MP mirage figures available. I have him on preorder but he hasn't come in stock yet. After watching a few reviews I'm contemplating canceling before I get charged.
Hmmm?? No comparison to the Transform Element offering?? That is...most unusual. I don't particularly have an affinity toward Mirage (the Netflix Decepticon disguise version of Siege Mirage is my _first ever_ Mirage figure), but if I wanted a MP sized representation, I would probably go MMC or TE. FT looks cool, but ain't quite my cup of cocoa.
I was certain you were going to break it when trying to open the chest. I believe the panels you never folded back just above his waist were blocking you from opening the sides of the torso to allow proper clearance to open the chest.
Good reivew. I got this figure as Mirage is my favorite G1 character and first ever transformer I got. Love his ability to turn invisible. I wonder if we will get an all Clear version of this guy? I have the Occular Max one and the TFCon exclusive where he is turning invisible. I assume that you never got the Transform Element Mirage for your collection. I know you did review it and you seemed to like it. I think you did a versus against Occular Max IIRC. I wonder if the parachute is "compatible" with the FT version. I am looking forward to the versus between MMC and FT.
My dude Skully be defending FT like Skip Bayless defends Baker Mayfield. We’re commending them for using single joints now? The wizard sleeves are atrocious. Articulation is beyond basic. Easy pass. Hope Jazz is better. Still a great vid 👍🏼
Great review.. i just can't pass my eyes on the milky white chest paint.. i know is Toon look.. but i just can't. I will stuck with my MMC ver. Thanks !
That isn't white, it's grey. Christ knows what FT was thinking using that colour. Looks even more obviously grey in person. Not toon or toy accurate and just a baffling choice.
That gap on the wrist is indeed kind of off putting... I wish they gave a filler piece for that. Not sure if the suggestion here of leaving the forearm untransformed helps, because it makes the forearm look like it has a fracture LOL.
Will us common folk be able to hold this figure anytime soon? Feel like it's been 3 weeks since this dropped. Of course no updates from BBTS. I think I'm gonna drop BBTS and start using your East Coast hookup dude.
It's not even white, it's grey. It really detracted from the overall look of the figure for me, which is a real shame as it looks so toon accurate elsewhere.
Man, I'm just not feeling this. I pre-ordered it ages ago and was going to get him regardless of anything else, because I missed the original run of Sphinx (I prefer the dark blue and I'd like to have the parachute) and wasn't convinced Transform Element would do it for me. But then I got the Transform Element Mirage recently for ~$70, and it's pretty good - not perfect, but close enough. It's quite cartoon-accurate, which is not my thing, but between a bunch of the real vehicle details being replicated better than FansToys (including the obviously illegal Ford logos on the engine), and the figure feeling more to me like an old Takara carbot than I ever expected, I'm more than happy with him. I was still going to get Phantasm so I could compare them in-hand, see which I prefer, and maybe even keep both, but now seeing that he's $150, has limited articulation (those ankles are just plain bad), and given the horrendous exchange rate right now, I think I'm going to cancel it, even if I lose my deposit. I've been going back and forth on it all night but after finally watching this review, I think my mind is made up - I'm rather unimpressed with it overall. To be clear, the price is only the final nail in the coffin for me - it's far from my only gripe. Hopefully Jazz is better...
Leaving the missile on in transformation scratches it, don't do it! Hate the bot mode deco on this, its way too animation model accurate and loses a load of character as a result. I'll be painting the front spoiler and feet silver. The arms are appalling, those gaps should have been accounted for and I think a sliding collapse instead of the fold would have solved it better. Its a real mixed bag for me, but my mmc is falling apart so I'm kinda locked in.
Paint is all well and good, but not so much if it's painted the wrong colour... He's meant to be blue and white, not blue and grey. Cannot wrap my head around that decision at all. Also found it to be a real pain to transform. Wish I hadn't left the missile attached to mine, as the chrome scraped off in several areas due to the tight clearances. Love the silhouette in bot mode, but the paint choices really detract from the overall aesthetic (although I do love the blue). If they'd used a pure white paint I'd have definitely said it beats TE, but as it stands I now have three MP scaled Mirage figures that miss the mark in some way or another.
Sphynix looks great more interesting to me than the other hypertoony ones.ever since fantoys made their version of soundwave to up till their latest releases they look boring to me ,the quality is there ,they feel great but look cheap and i agree some colors make the figure look better than the slavish toon colors ,i definately like the style they had before.
I'm not really digging FT's decision to mix toon colors with chrome with their latest figures. I may or may not pick this figure up in the near future.
If i didn't already have two copies of Sphinx (g2 and toon) and the invisible DX9, id definitely pick this up. But i do, so I'm passing on this one. I bet mmc will lose the versus, but not worth the cost of upgrading for me.
The screw covers are a big deal Look at the back of their drag strip and it looks like he cameoed in Terminator 2. Would be great if they included some with the combiner parts
It’s probably me but the creaking sound you get with Fanstoys figures while transforming them always annoyed me. I assume it’s due to the stiffness and tightness of their plastics.
As with the last two FT releases it’s not bad but also not good enough. That hollowness in the arms is ugly as hell and it lacks articulation everywhere. Fans Toys need to wake up or they’re going to start loosing costumers. Thanks for the review Mr. Skullface.
Hmmm, definitely a sharp, cold and soulless take. Probably a Facsimile Construct sent by Emirate Xaaron. Or perhaps Mirage himself to dodge a tiresome job modelling for Fanstoys, after all that’s his modus operandi right? My Sphinx goes really well with my Fanstoys Hound. Not sure where this guy is gonna go.
We're in a weird sort of uncanny valley with FT these days. The more the successful they are replicating the toon look... the more boring the figure looks. At a glance it looks like a R.E.D. figure
I think it's a mistake by FT to seemingly move all figures to a cartoon aesthetic. Their Dino's will not be replaced so for me, everything needs to fit with them, as they fit with the takara masterpiece look.
We need a VS with the TE version also.
Can u also compare it to the TE's offering?
L O L… “I can’t believe it’s not butter (face)”
NO WAY! Here's hoping Bobby also does a versus with TE, been waiting for it for a long time now

🤣 when you said that, I thought on Dragstrip in the Arcade Galleria crossfire scene.
It’s probably me but the creaking sound you get with Fanstoys figures while transforming them always annoyed me. I assume it’s due to the stiffness and tightness of their plastics.
My MMC Sphinx appeases my eye more than this.
My Sphinx-A is still hanging tough.
All these Formula race cars are way too big in scale though. A Beetle dwarfs a Ligier JS11.
As with the last two FT releases it’s not bad but also not good enough. That hollowness in the arms is ugly as hell and it lacks articulation everywhere. Fans Toys need to wake up or they’re going to start loosing costumers.
Thanks for the review Mr. Skullface.
🥷🏻👌
Hmmm, definitely a sharp, cold and soulless take. Probably a Facsimile Construct sent by Emirate Xaaron. Or perhaps Mirage himself to dodge a tiresome job modelling for Fanstoys, after all that’s his modus operandi right? My Sphinx goes really well with my Fanstoys Hound. Not sure where this guy is gonna go.
We're in a weird sort of uncanny valley with FT these days. The more the successful they are replicating the toon look... the more boring the figure looks. At a glance it looks like a R.E.D. figure
I ll' stick to TE.
小比确实差点意思🧐
Doesn't beat Speedstar for me.
That transformation does not look fun or intuitive at all.
No disrespect to Bobby, but basic rule of thumb, if Bobby can transform a figure in less than 30 minutes, it’s a breeze for almost everyone else.
@@ConnorDangerCash Fair point
A comparison should be done with the tf element... the mmc is garbage 🗑
Way better than TE
In paint wise I agree, but leg wheels (in bot mode), wizard sleeves, price, and articulation it sucks ass compared to TE.
@@rjohnson80100 I agree. And premium paint can easily scratch. Paint is great but not needed absolutely everywhere.
@@iamtheomnimonkey I could see some paint chipping at the edge of the chest piece already
@@rjohnson80100 depends on why you collect I have both and TE is not even close to what I want in a figure. To each their own
@@iamtheomnimonkey to me it’s needed everywhere but it all depends on why you collect. I display over play and that’s just my thing
Sphinx is great
I think it's a mistake by FT to seemingly move all figures to a cartoon aesthetic. Their Dino's will not be replaced so for me, everything needs to fit with them, as they fit with the takara masterpiece look.
No neck
