Ive never gotten the idea that tanks shouldnt do damage. They shouldnt do as much damage, and they dont, it takes a tank their whole kit to do like 900 damage, but they should still do damage. If they dont do damage, theyre not scary. If theyre not scary they cant do the job of defending teammates because people will just walk past them.
The 900 damage is taken out of context when tanks have 3k plus hp and the squishies hit the tanks for similar back. In a micro view 1v1 the warrior vs mage match up the warr wants the fight to be prolonged because they should win. Ex: herc 1 2 combo with autos hits Ix Chel for 900 and she does a return 1200 with her 1 2 3 hercs next rotation hits again for another 900 with a added 500 (no bounce) from hits ult now she's dead. Even if im generious and say she gets a rotation of 1500 with ability procs and ult the herc is still alive cause his hp pool should be 3k+. The fact that warr autos hit hard with no power doesn't help either. A full def warr could auto a mage to death while both are on cooldown.
@AdomZohar You're right, but, the mage in that situation, if playing right, will always either A: Have the range advantage or B: have a way to get out. And that's just assuming a 1v1 situation. If they don't have either they are, in general, just straight out of position and deserved to die. Meanwhile your tank has to constantly be thinking about positioning not only once they are on the enemy but in how to get in range of them without taking too much damage. Do they use their movement ability to get in close? Now they may not have the extra damage to be able to kill the mage before they die. Alternatively they blink, which has baseline a 90+ (I don't remember specifics rn) second cooldown, if they are able to be out of combat long enough to do so. Lastly there's juke shoes to dodge the damage as they walk at the enemy but that just shows them being straight better mechanically than the mage, in which case yeah, the mage should die. Now we go into a 5v5 situation where said mage should also have peel from 1-2 other damage dealers and/or their own tanks and now we see how much of a disadvantage said tank has at getting in to do that 900 damage. Yes they will have a team of their own to back them up but it's much easier to backup someone in your backline while someone targets them than it is to backup a Frontline while they target someone, especially while they may have a frontline of their own either peeling or diving your backline. I'm not necessarily saying 900 damage on a full tank character isn't a lot of damage, I'm saying that damage is necessary to make tanks scary enough to actually be feared and for the attention to be drawn to them away from their squishies.
