The Tonight Show had guest hosts for about 6 months between Paar's farewell and Carson's big debut only because Johnny wasn't released from his ABC contract until a few weeks before the beginning of the 1962-1963 television season. Also, here's a fun fact. Johnny Carson actually filled in for Jack Paar on The Tonight Show in 1959 and in 1960 when Jack had his struggles with the censors.
I think I had heard somewhere that Johnny filled in for Jack but I had forgotten that tidbit. There's also that great clip of Steve Allen and Johnny prank calling Jack, I think that was from the Steve Allen Show, right? Great to see all three hosts together!
