      Yeah, the saga tells us that when Olav's fleet passes through the ambush point, eager man in their longship shouted, "that's the flagship! Go get them" But prevented by their commander that said, "wait, it's not the flagship. Wait until I give commands". And they ends up with seeing ships after ships passing through them, getting larger and larger until the long serpent finally passes and they sprung into action.

      I mean, that's like almost all stories in pre-literate cultures were kept: Musically, or at least rythmically. The Homerian Epics were told for what, several centuires, before being written down first? It's quite interesting, everyone who's ever played chinese whispers (wow that name feels outdated) knows how quickly messages change. It must have required an enormous amount of dedication and precision from Storytellers and their apprentices.

      @@Lemonz1989 Its surprising the amount metaphorical speech too. Hildar ting doesn't mean battle, it means Hildar's Thing, which was obviously what they called political meetings. However, Hildar was the name of a Valkyrie, so Hildar's thing could be interpreted as a meeting worthy of Hildar, a meeting of military forces and thus a battle.Thus, the line doesn't have its literal meeting of Norway's men riding to Hildar's meeting, its the men riding to battle.

    22:00 - 22:30 is such an easily dismissed detail if you don't pay attention, but it was Finn (Erik Hakonarson's assistant) and not Einar that told king Olav that Norway just disappeared from his hands. I mistook him for Einar for the first few times because of the line where he throws his bow away. So this makes the "My King, my Lord!" line even more bitter since it's provocation. Insane how well the Faroese were at depicting that non-chalant discrete venom that certain villains can speak

    Well sung by my Faroese sisters and brothers. Although this song was written down at the beginning of the 19th century, it bears the stamp of being a skald song. Intended to help people remember an important story. As a man from Trøndelag, I like to hear the story of men like Olav Trygvasson and Einar Eindrideson Tambarskjelve.
    The statue at the start of the video is of Olav Trygvasson, on the square in Trondheim/Nidaros. He founded the city in 997. Funfact: At the king's feet lies the severed head of the god Thor, which symbolizes the king's victory over paganism. You can just see it on the picture.

    • @tobwang
      @tobwang 3 роки тому +3

      @@POLITICUS-DANICUS "Gøtar" may well mean 'Geats', and cool that you are half Faroese. But sadly, you haven't convinced me just yet. You'd need to dissuade me of some things first. {We're talking about the stanza starting at 7:38 and we have the phrase "blóðug verður gøta", right?}
      (1) You argue that "gøta" means 'Geats', and therefore it means that here as well. A quick google search confirms a Faroese word "gøta" meaning 'street' (see en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gøta ). That doesn't prove you wrong, but it doesn't prove me right either.
      (2) Eirik, the earl of Lade, is the one saying this, motivating his men to fight Olav Tryggvason. Eirik is on the same team as the Swedes. To me, him telling the men to be strong makes more sense with the reason "because there will be blood everywhere" than "because some of the Swedes on the boat over there will become bloody". The latter seems a bit too specific. But then again, saying that "the streets will become drenched in blood" in a naval battle is a bit whacky (like, where are the streets at? are they under the sea?)
      (3) Let's do a snap analysis: "blóðug" means 'bloody', "verður" means 'becomes' and "gøta" is yet undetermined. We arrive at a working translation of ""gøta" becomes bloody". Three things to point out regarding the morphology: (a) "blóðug" is either feminine nominative singular or neuter nominative or accusative plural, meaning that as a predicate, the subject, "gøta" has to be either feminine singular or neuter plural; (b) "verður" is singular, meaning that the subject also has to be singular; and (c) "gøta" meaning "Geats" is plural AND genitive, matching neither the verb or predicate. "gøta", being nominative feminine singular, does.

      Indeed, many Old Norse names were borrowed from Vikings but Volodymyr is not.
      It's 100% Slavic.
      Some early princes of Novgorod and Kiev (and probably many other bilingual Vikings) used to have two names (Old Norse and Slavic) with similar pronunciation.
      E.g. Yaroslav corresponds to Jens-Leif.
      And the pair Valdemar-Volodymyr is a perfect example.
      Volodymyr is a compound of two words i.e. "volod- " (волод(іти)) i.e. to reign, to rule an "mir" i.e. world, peace and sometimes authority..
      So, "one who rules the world".
      It can be also found in other Slavic languages, e.g. in my native Polish. it's Włodzimierz.
      BTW
      I would add to your list, at least two borrowed Viking names i.e, Guðleifr (Gleb) and Ingvar (Igor, Ihor in modern Ukrainian).
      Guðleif(r) may seem strange but at this time, the f consonant was absent in Slavic languages, so usually it was replaced by similar sounds i.e. p or b.
