    There is no logic in buying products I don't want or need just to make enough money for Disney to put out the product I would like to have.

      I don't think Disney was ever going to release an extended cut, anyway. They told Peter Jackson that much. And he's one of the extended edition "kings". I don't think it would have mattered how many of the standard sets they sold, the extended cut Blu-Ray set still wasn't happening. It would be more likely for a streaming-only sequel of sorts. But, I doubt Disney would even do that. I still think a "Let It Be" Blu-Ray, with bonus material is possible. But not from Disney. Apple would probably release that by themselves.

      @DCToonTime Рік тому +10

      Agreed. Not going to play that game. I’ve lived this long without “bonus” material, I think I’ll be ok. I care about the music and if I have that, I’m good. The only bonus material I would care about would be actual different takes on songs, versions with significant differences, not take 17 of Two Of Us where Paul coughs before they count the song in. Don’t need it. I’m glad I’m not tortured by the collect everything/anything bug.

    Sorry if this has already been mentioned (I hardly ever comment on UA-cam). I'm in the UK & one factor that may have resulted in it being deemed a 'flop' is: It's been damn near IMPOSSIBLE to get this release over here. I'm a long term fan, but didn't want to subscribe to Disney + (in fact, I had no streaming channels when it first aired). I thought I'd wait for the DVD. I don't own a blueray player btw. But, on it's release date & for months it was listed as 'unavailable' over here, or saying eg: 'ships in 1-4 weeks'. Essentially it's only available as an IMPORT & many people who have managed to get a copy of the DVD have found that it doesn't even play on a UK DVD player, as it's a different format. There's not even been any information on formats in the ad's I've seen. So- I can see the Liverpool skyline from my kitchen window & STILL haven't been able to get a dvd copy (!).

      This is correct. I have not been able to purchase this product here after the initial few weeks after the July re-release. It’s now being re-launched again next week and I will finally be getting my copy. So the issue is quite complex and I suspect it’s a kind of perfect storm of lack of extras, lack of availability and the fact it’s still available to watch on air.

    Apple should not have made a partnership with Disney. I questioned the business relationship from the beginning. I have heard Disney is very controlling. I had a good friend who, 25 years ago, had a reputation for being one of the best independent theatrical lighting professionals in New York City. Disney wanted to hire him for the Pocohanbtis premier in Central Park. They called him in for an interview. Disney saw the length of his hair. Disney tried to talk him into getting a haircut. Disney gave him the big song and dance about how Disney would look good on his resume. He reminded them that "they called him." He pointed out that his hair has always been long and was long when he was building his professional reputation. He later stated that he was content with or without Disney on his resume. If you want to hire my services, great, but the hair stays. Disney did not hire him. Unfortunately for Beatles fans, Ringo and Paul didn't do their research.

    I'm in the UK so can only talk about my experiences there. The key issue with this release was that it simply has not been widely available enough. I managed to pick up the blu ray in store on release day, but Amazon UK had it showing as 'unavailable' for months, and as of today (30 September) has it listed as a pre order item ., for release on 17 October. The UK / EU Beatles store also no longer stocks it, and availability for the DVD version has been non-existent. Because of this, I'm not at all surprised it is now classed as a 'flop'. If you can't buy the product, it isn't going to be a success.
    As for an extended cut, we already have this - the original project was due to be 2-3 hours long, and Peter Jackson extended this to over 8 hours. We need to be grateful we even got that, because it wasn't in Disney'
    s original plan. Even if we got a 30 hour extended cut, there would still be an additional 30 hours in the vaults. I want all 60 hours, but from a commercial viewpoint I'm just grateful with what we have got.

  • @bradfleg8942

    This is a really funny video, I almost thought you were serious with that argument blaming Beatle fans for not getting an extended cut release! It wasn't until the end that I realized it was your sense of humor. If anyone's to blame it's the fans that were willing to buy this sub-par "Get Back" physical media, signaling to Disney that "It's OK, we'll buy anything".

  • @jameswilson7084
    @jameswilson7084 Рік тому +10

    I got one of the Feb. "Get Back" DVD sets. And I don't think there was an audio "glitch". But, there was a mistake. They left out one of the surround sound audio tracks, which are on the new DVD and Blu-Ray sets. That was most likely why they were recalled. One big reason for the Blu-Ray set's failure is the fact that too few of the sets were pressed. Amazon US, CAN and UK sold out of the Blu-Ray sets very soon after. They are only available now from third-party sellers, at an inflated price. But, Disney will see this as a sales flop. And thus, greatly decreases the chance for an extended cut. In a way, the 7 hour, 48 minute cut is already extended by one hour and 48 minutes. Peter Jackson went rogue, and added extra material to the six-hour cut he was supposed to deliver to Disney. Because he already got the sense that an extended edition was unlikely. Ultimately, we should be thankful for what we got. Which is a lot.

    Hi Joe,
    I can agree partly with you.
    But the first mistake was to release it by Disney. It would be better if Apple had released it through Universal or if a streaming service was needed to distribute I think a cooporation with Netflix or HBO was a better choice. In my humble opinion the combi of The Beatles and Disney doesn't fit at all.
    I'm glad I bought the bluray but yess ..... I would have liked it if there were some extras.
    Take care.

On the other hand this whole catastrophe of mishandling marketing wise alienated me a lot from Disney. I really hope that Apple and Universal Music will feature future projects on their own. And you‘re so right: The Revolver project coming soon will show, what a mighty force The Beatles are, artisticly and commercially👍🏻Physical releases are the ones that matter: Even if I transfer my media on my iPod for dayly use and enjoy it via my AirPods. Joe, I vehemently disagree. I am a hardcore fan. There is no incentive for buying a blu ray with no additional bonus content when I can watch the same thing on Disney + and I don’t have to get up and put a disc in. I can watch it in stunning HD quality on a big tv. Now, if the physical release had supplemental material - different story. And it will stay up on Disney + forever until someone else buys the rights to it. (Hulu, Amazon, Netflix). It’s never not going away. I get owning it physically - as a fan you have it and no one can take it away. But it being modern times, I have no use to spend $40 on something that I can click and watch whenever I wish. Streaming is here and not going away.

    I think that blaming the fans for the lack of sales is wrong. If Apple/Disney is not selling a product that has value over what is available on the streaming service, it’s not the fan’s fault. A consumer shouldn’t be expected to buy something on the hopes that it “might” lead to a better product later. I lay the blame on Disney who were not interested in a DVD release in the first place and put no effort into making it a compelling product. My $0.02 Joe.

    The reason I didn't buy it is because the prices were so scatty and availability was all over the place and there were SO MANY different eBay sellers, eBay shops, website shops selling it with all sorts of different prices and it was hard to find the DVD and then when I could find the DVD it was so expensive compared to the Blu-ray and I'm not gonna buy a Blu-ray set up just for this disc. Plus it was only sub standard websites and eBay sellers that were stocking the DVD and I couldn't be sure it was a legit copy. Nothing to do with no extras or waiting for expanded editions. It just wasn't available for me at a reasonable price.i would have DEFINITELY bought and paid for this physical copy ON DVD at a reasonable price. I couldn't find it for less than about £35 which is ridiculous and it was at other websites for upto £60 and it was like a minefield trying to navigate if it was a legit copy and also I believe the cheapest one I did find for £35 was from another country and I would have to pay delivery fees of around another £15 and possibly import fees. Really was a shit show for the DVD here in the UK if you weren't extremely lucky to get it in that small batch that got out there initially and I have no idea how those people got it. And please believe me I'm not a cheapskate for Beatles product. I've bought all the last 4 super deluxe box sets in vinyl, although pepper was just 2 vinyl discs so I bought the 6 CD box as well (that was good about pepper, it had a Blu-ray and DVD in the box and I really wish they would go back and re release pepper all on vinyl like they did with let it be and they're doing with Revolver(which I've already paid for) and I just know that would sell out as well even though it all came out in 2017 on CD, I know it would sell because that's where we've come to now isn't it. The CDs and vinyl boxes are equal now. And apparently Giles Martin says he could actually make the DVD/Blu-ray 5.1 surround mix better now on Peppers. So I don't know I'm just doing a wish list now aren't I? Lol.

    I hope it stays on Disney+, in fact I am sure it will, as I will explain further on. Firstly, many of us are still watching and re-watching it via the Disney streaming service. Sounds a lot like because you bought the physical product - you are happy - so you really don't care about those who are happy to watch it on Disney +. I love owning the physical Beatle album boxsets, but for video, which is streaming fine in 4k (which you will not get with your Blu-ray set), I was 'meh'. I had a complimentary physicaI set given to me, but because (to our continuing frustration) it could not contain any further unreleased film or Lindsay-Hogg's original, I gave it to a friend.
    Secondly, I do have it from very good industry sources that "Get Back" is not leaving Disney + any time soon. This is because it is one of their top premium customer-drawing features (streaming stats-wise) and that equals more subscribers. So in terms of a good business model why should they remove it? It has and still makes them a good amount of money (to put it mildly).
    I told you sometime ago to be patient that a physical release would be released later, which it was and the result is in your hands. This was after you ranted (your words MrMayo) that they were not going to release this blu-ray box set. Your video today does come across as a little sour-grapes I'm afraid. If you are the true Beatle fan you say you are (and I have no doubts there🙂), then lets just enjoy and appreciate the music and visuals created by this sublime band . Peace brother Mayo✌

  • @CJPeriPeri
    @CJPeriPeri Рік тому +1

    @MeanMrMayo - I was hesitant to buy it on Blu-ray at first, but one of the last points you made is the most important one.
    1. If you buy a copy of the Blu-ray, it's yours, you own it!
    Disney can remove it from their streaming services whenever they like, and that's why I still purchase physical media.
    Sure, it may not be in 4K, but does it need to be? It's footage that is over 50 years old with heavy Digital Noise Reduction applied to the picture (The Beatles look like wax figures in certain scenes).
    I personally think standard definition DVDs are an out of date physical media and should be scrapped however, Blu-rays are in high definition and the discs are difficult to scratch/damage compared to the former.
    2. CONs - I think the biggest problem with this release has been Apple Records partnering with Disney over the distribution/release of this project. It's disappointing that of all the worldwide streaming services they could have chosen, they decided on Disney. The con's have been mostly towards the older die hard fans, who may not want to waste money on a streaming service to just watch that one TV series. There were countless delays on the Blu-ray/dvd release which may or may not hurt sales. There's also the obvious lack of bonus features and the missing original "Let It Be" film which we were promised years ago and that's a huge sticking point
    3. PROs - I guess the one pro of having it on a streaming service is that it will reach a far wider audience than if they just released it on physical media, it may introduce The Beatles and their music to a newer generation, which I am all for.....however, as I said before, if and when it's removed from Disney Plus and the Blu-ray is out of print, don't come crying!
    In summary, I was hoping that if I bought a physical copy, like yourself, there would be a super deluxe release with the additional footage that Peter Jackson wants released (including the Let It Be film), but in the end it hasn't made a difference. If Disney had released "The Beatles: Get Back" to streaming services and made it for sale on physical media at the exact same time, we probably would have a super deluxe release. I guess most of my blame goes towards Disney/Apple Records and not the fans for not purchasing, the release was a total cock-up!

    Disney cannot put out an extended version when the films are back in the vault and are not going to be revisited. Just how much more footage do you want to see of 4 crybabies with fragile egos taking turns talking behind each other's backs? I have always been a huge fan from December 1963. And finally, the "Get Back" film and tape vaults were opened, the films and tapes were beautifully refurbished and synced and what did we get? Ten seconds of "Teddy Boy" instead of that passionate McCartney performance during their rehearsal, and 20 more minutes of talking... then 5 seconds of a great Hamburg era cover, 10 seconds of another, then 20 minutes of Mal, Heather, Linda and Yoko. Tons of butchered scenes of songs we wanted to see and hear uncut, with plenty of uninterrupted talking taking up most of the film. We have The Beatles on the roof, their last ever performance together, and instead of the director finally letting us see the Rooftop Set uninterrupted... NO! The Beatles last "concert" has to share the screen with people in the street, with traffic, with silly comments etc. which the "Let It Be" movie has already given us... with the volume on the music in the new "Get Back" movie going up and down, jumping soft and loud over and over, in order to accomodate all of the freakin distractions down on the street! THAT is why we die hard fans have no interest in putting out our hard earned money for this mistake called "Get Back".

    Sorry, I love your channel, but I completely disagree. It makes no sense to have to buy a Blu-ray set once to have to buy it again when the all powerful Disney decides that we have spent enough on the first release to re-release it again with bonus footage. This is Disneys fault for treating us fans like ATM machines and think they can withdraw anytime they want. As always, I vote with my wallet by not spending any money on this. The blu-ray would have sold more with some bonus features-Complete uncut rooftop performance, a handful of bonus scenes, and a making-of mini-doc with interviews with Paul, Ringo, Peter Jackson, Glyn Johns, and Giles Martin. Or why not package the blu-ray with a bonus CD that includes some songs that were in Get Back but not on the LIB box set, like Castle of the King of the Birds (used as credits music after part 1), George's Isn't It a Pity demo, Watching Rainbows, the complete Yoko jam, etc.

    I am a life long Beatles fan, I purchase all of the physical product in spite of the diminishing value for money wise (Looking at you Revolver vinyl box set). I couldn’t purchase this set currently in the UK even if I wanted to. However, I won’t be rushing out to buy it even when I can. Firstly, I have Disney + so can currently view it whenever I wish. But more importantly, having viewed it upon release I haven’t wanted to return to it once. Historically fascinating as it is, it just confirmed for me how awful this period was (despite the revisionist ‘see, it wasn’t that bad’ line spun ahead of its release). After years of listening to the bootlegs and reading the transcripts, I can honestly say seeing the visuals was an interesting, slightly traumatic experience that I am in no rush to repeat. As for wanting another three hours of unseen footage, thanks but no thanks. I’d rather have an official release of the original film (so I can retire my bootleg VHS).

Why Apple couldn't have financed this project is beyond me. cheap? probably. it should've been released at theaters in a condensed version then this release all 6 hours would've been the extended cut on bluray. any more extras than that I'm guessing was trite and not important enough to include in the first place. (more nose picking etc) I got the bootleg bluray before Christmas and once it was announced that no bonus features were included why bother for me. I've only seen it for sale at The fest for Beatles fans but never anywhere else. Hey Joe, I am with you. The Get Back project was miss handled.
    I feel Let It Be was miss handled also but that is a different thought process for a different time. Get Back is still on Disney + streaming. It never came off Disney really does not care, they know it will not make them a boat load of money and that’s why they won’t release a copy with extras. Disney is not going to put money out for
    Distribution rights or packaging on a deluxe package of this product.
    if you look at avatar up until about a month ago they had the movie avatar on Disney+ and about a month maybe two months ago they pulled it off the streaming and now it’s coming back into theaters for a limited time right before avatar 2 comes to theater so therefore they’re trying to make some money off of avatar and hopes that people go see the original movie before avatar 2 comes out. that’s where they’re putting their money for whatever reason they’re not putting their money on get back they must’ve had a deal with Apple maybe even Peter Jackson to distribute it on the streaming service and 1 dvd/blurey release and that was most likely the end of the deal. This deal could have been made with the company’s months before the pandemic, possibly even before the new CEO took over. And if that’s the case the new CEO might not have to honor the deal in its original agreement.
    Remember Disney has lost money since the pandemic.

    I’m no die hard Beatles fan. But I’m thinking that they probably should’ve released the DVD/BluRay at the same time as the premiere on Disney+. However, I believe this project mainly was to get some new subscribers over to Disney+. I’m sure they did well. Especially when it was said that there were to be no physical dvd to be released in the beginning.
    The casual Beatles fans probably didn’t buy the physical version of the same film that they just saw, and still have access to on streaming. But I guess the die hard fans didn’t either. I think buying an item over and over isn’t working that well when it comes to movies. It’s another thing when it comes to music I guess. Is anyone considering that Disney might actually know their market (i.e. the general public, not Beatle collectors)? I think they knew that it would not be an amazing seller, and that's why they didn't want to put extra effort/time/money into including bonus material. They know that physical media is in decline.
    It's the same story with all other "legacy" artist releases. They leap up the sales charts for 1-2 weeks then sharply fall down again after all the "diehard" fans have bought the release. Younger people (in general - there are always exceptions) don't feel the need to own/collect stuff, if they listen to it online or watch it online, why do you need to own it?
    The answer to the eight hours (or however much it was) of bonus footage seems obvious: Apple/Peter Jackson - put it up online! If Disney isn't interested, there is a myriad of other online options...
    ... oh, but don't hold your breath for the original Let It Be movie. That movie now lies alongside the original Cavern, it's been buried, paved over, and there's a new version now it it's place!
