Christ but Michelle got some amount of stick. An absolutely amazing driver, almost world champ, and all she gets is slagged. Glad times have changed since the 80s in that regard! Very enjoyable episode, I loved these types of programmes and still do.
Michelle Moutron was (and is) more than an equal to many of her male colleagues. She blazed a trail when women in rallying was unfashionable (to say the least), yet when attitudes have changes do we see her like now?.....not at all. Where are the top women drivers in rallying today?
@@Revup1 Michelle was an exception. There have always been women in motorsport - Barbara Cartland was kicking arses back in the 1930s. They don't get anywhere, because ultimately they haven't been quick enough. If they'd had the 'women only' championships back then, Michelle would have had more titles than Loeb, Ogier, Schumacher and Hamilton combined. There haven't been any women drivers with half the talent MM had, since. A lot of the male drivers that have been competing at the top level since, don't have half her talent.
This brings back some great memories. Used to watch the Rallysprint on the BBC every year but in 1984 my brother and I were at Donnington to watch. Got there too late to see the rally stage but i was in the crowd standing in the pit lane for the autotest and watched the race from Redgate. My outstanding memory, as a seventeen year old lad at the time, was seeing Michelle Mouton for the first time and realising just how beautiful she was. I seem to remember she was having trouble selecting gears in the Metro, which must have been a strange car for here after driving the Quattro. I also remember that we drove out at the end of the day and John Watson was sitting alongside us in the que in a brand new Rover 213. Loads of fun, thanks for posting tjhe video.
The race at the end was just wonderful. Loved Watson's move, and the battle between brundel and mcrae. Mansell drove the mg quicker that it had a right to be driven. Some pilot!!
Nothing surprisenly on this video...... Marc Deuz was always a good rallydriver see his winning of the 1986 Hunsruck rally before Mouton (Peugeot 205 T16 Germany) and Eklund on his MG 6R4. Watch on the UA-cam video of this rally and also the 1986 24 Hours rally of Ypres and you will seen his wonderfull rally skills. Maybe a lot of you don't know but Deuz did a lot of circuit races too for the Belgian Belga Team. He was a race and rallydriver the only bad thing for him was that he came from...... a small country called BELGIUM...... if he had the Britisch nationality he would have more chance to be a pilot in an manufatures team and participated in WRC rallies. He had the talent to be a wrc topdriver but came from a small country. Marc Deuz is also a well educated person he speaks easy English, Dutch, French and Germain language. He is a really gentleman, very social person has no huge alter ego...... In fact he's very easy to talk with and is know for his good feeling for humor, jokes and playing charachter. But he's always been a proffesional minded pilote and very populair personalty in Belgium. We love him very much and respect him a lot for his spectulair driving and being a very fast pilot.
Those who owned an SD1 Vitesse or Vanden Plas from the factory were lucky. Those who raced them were very lucky, but not as lucky those who had a Scalextric. The Rover was a kind of macho Q-car pin-up. As tinny as Metros could be sometimes, their kart-like tiny wheels and low gravity centre made them ideal for autotesting like nothing else. All '80s MGs were pretty nifty in a suburban kind of way. This video is fantastic.
It ran for several years, actually. The one in 1985 featured Metro 6R4s - sadly, the weather was poor and I've yet to come across a good enough quality version to consider sharing it here.
That was an absolutely shocking result. Reading could only manage 1-1 against Barry !?!?! 😉 Another great upload, I wonder if any unsuspecting punters ended up with those thrashed motors? 🤔
Wonderful race in the Montegos LMAO, its amazing how those cars could take that, I fixed that junk in the 80's, how cool would that be turning up at a trackday with 165x13's and smoking way better cars with all the bolt ons. Christ knows how the head gasket held up and the chocolate wheels bearings they had LOL. Marvellous.
Poor Michele had a disadvantage as if your used to left hand drive then getting into a right hand drive car as big as a Rover is not easy , also i am surprised how good Mansell was for someone whos not a rally driver
Keke did all sorts of racing from time to time on his freetime. He even drove Arctic Lapland Rally multiple times. There was also this Finnish ''Race of Champions''-event in the early 80's, where they had Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Markku Alén, Keke Rosberg, etc, etc.
@@VHSRallies I saw that and was hoping we would see it being used, never mind, there is a video on you tube of that test cars, if you search 6r4 test car from ian's deaf motorsport - like this - ua-cam.com/video/N8Za7uxIvLI/v-deo.html
Mouton looks amazing and has good humor and amazing driving skill. To bad the interviewer who can’t drive made the jokes not a driver. She drives 1000% better than anyone in grandstand there. She is the only female who could compete agianst the men
If anyone says Mouton was a bit rubbish in this, I'm going to tell the computer. Michelle was being a good sport in the bad old days of women having to suffer going along with all the oppression of men sometimes having a bit of a giggle with them, which is so cringeworthy and thankfully fully banned now. She was more than a match for everyone, and if only women were allowed out on Thirsdays in the 1980s, most women would surely have done everything I can ever think of and more, plus there would be no wars with more women around. Apart from the pain of how awful this was to witness, this was smashing, even though, on the whole, I wish it had never happened because it's like watching cave men relative to this age of full equestrianism.

@@somebodyelseuk I believe she started by completeing in women only races and after winning them constantly she went into the big leagues

3.37 OK who else spotted the Metro 6R4 development car in the background! Same car Pond used in the national series that year.
Wonderful stuff , for an nowadays Rover SD1 owner/lover and used to be rally driver in 84 from Sweden. Thank´s for the upload!
Marc Duez come across as a nice guy and was a good driver in his day. Remember his antics in the BMW m3 in 89!
Brilliant, bought back some amazing memories of watching it when I was a kid !
Quality.. I had 2 Rover SD1s in the early 90s.. a 2300SE, and a white ex Police manual 3500 V8... memories :)

Absolutely agree. A superb driver. His rally exploits in a mk1 m3 are incredible viewing.
Loved his saloon car racing stuff as well.
Michelle Mouton, beautiful and what a Rally Driver, an amazing woman.

Brilliant just brilliant, most entertaining racing I’ve seen in a while. I don’t remember it though for some reason.

This is best video ever! It’s got everything . Thanks VHS rallies. Best content on you tube (for me anyway)
My man murray walker!
Fantastic footage ! thankyou for posting 👍
Very entertaining watch! I had a 1985 MG Montego and it was a bloody heavy lump and horrible to chuck around.
Keke driving, image Lewis, Seb, or Max turning up to drive in somthing like this today.
Fantastic!
All good ...but Marc Duez with the M3 is one of my best memories...

BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marc duez is fantastic🚗👌🚗👌🚗
I was wondering what the Penrith score was. 😁
Omg amazing drivers 🙏 real raw unforgivable driving
Besides the individual award, that was the first edition that happened a team event?
この時代のヘルメットカラーリングがso cool.
Didn't Hyacinth Bucket drive one of those?
Rover should have put this V8 in the 800 and made it RWD
The 2.7 Honda v6 far out performed the delicate v8

Did I hear this right there's a rosburg in rallying? The only rosburg that I know is nico and his father in Formula 1
Gary White I think Murray was getting over excited again....bless him

Nice, what is that behind Michelle at ua-cam.com/video/tl8UY6GuLe8/v-deo.html an early 6R4 testcar, don't see if anywhere later in the coverage.
Yea they had early 6R4 prototypes back in '84 I think.
6R4 experts will be able to add more to this but I think Tony Pond may have done demo runs in the Metro at this event.

I agree. Painful to watch the misogynistic approach taken here.
I wonder if any of them montegos got sold on 🤣🤣🤣
All sold through the dealers after a quick lash up in the bodyshop. Henleys sold them I think
Montegos were shit new by looks of it aswel 😂😂

Frankly speaking, I am amazed that the whole thing could be staged, without British cars breaking down all the time, Austin Rover after all.
