I prefer them, honestly. Nice to see them moving more towards something I could buy as real armour, and away from the old Warcrafty "so, you want Space Marines, but prefer pure fantasy" look.
I even prefer the scalemail skirts replacing the loincloth-tabard-things (they're not quite either, but eh). Those tabards have always felt like a cheap way to disguise the wonkiness that you often get around the groin when casting minis in plastic, IMO, so having actual armour instead is something I'm a fan of.

I really like the new design. Proportions seem to be better, less under body suit and more Greco style armour. Put one next to a cities of Sigmar human and they’ll look huge!
The shields are the only thing I think don’t match the lore, although they look cool.
Liberator shield walls are a thing and those newer ones look more for massed melee than regimented shield wall.
    But overall looking mega!
I wonder if the bulkier armour of other new ‘retributor’ style units will fill the gap for you?

The face-helmets have ‚always‘ been my pet-peeve with the SE - which is why I started changing those with 3D-printed knight-helmets. Makes a ton of a difference. That‘s why I am not to worried about the weird new heads, but I do like the very rest of the resculpts. I think the tabard might have been to bulky for their slimmer silhouette now.

Well I guess I'm in the same league.
I liked the old liberators, got into AoS with the them at the very beginning. I like the greco-roman-fantasy take, the large surface for the shields (my scheme includes a gradient on them), the helmets. But I also felt they were a bit bulky, especially the shoulder pads (which were a pain to assemble). So it was ok to have a newer kit...
But I, too, dislike some aspects : the loss of the tabards, the shields too small (especially vertically) and the hammers too big, the notches, the pointy helmets. And I would have preferred if they had deopped the double hammer. I like the fact they're more slim, and the thunderstrike is cool... but it's also too different.
In the end, for my armour-painting itch, it makes me think about turning to Chaos ! 😄
Edit : on the other hand, the new clanrats are very cool and mix much better with their previous iteration.

I really like the original Stormcasts, in particular their tankyness. And although I never played AOS, I bought a few boxes of their first wave of release. To me, the general new design makes them lackluster, faceless (pun^^), beanpoles and, if not for their height, but for their looks, watered down to some kind of mortals with an armor that wants to imitate the immortals.

I don't like the helmets, I don't like the new hammers. I didn't like the old hammers either but they were marginally better than the new one. I agree with you on almost every point.
If they want to go gritty, they need to make the proportions more real-world, less cartoon like, and unfortunately the size of those bloody hammers just undoes everything. The size of the hammer heads alone makes them look like they're from WoW.

For me the massive weapons ruined it. I understand that heroic scale weapons was something to do with casting technology in the 1970s and 1980s and it sort of stuck, plus, if you look at the true-scale gladius on the original Warlord Games Roman Legionnaire set it "feels" undersized even though it's not.
    But.
The weapons are too large for the model's hands; the warhammers they're carrying are too large for them to use one-handed; the face of the hammers being so large and so flat would distribute the force of the blow over too wide an area - defeating the armour-breaking purpose of a warhammer; the shields are too thick for protracted fighting... ...unless Stormcast Eternals are as strong as Space Marines? I don't know (despite repeated attempts) the lore of AOS so if they are that strong, ignore everything I said aside from the physics of how a warhammer is designed to work.

I think what bugs me about this redesign is that all the initial thunderstrike units, while based on the same basic armor design, were obviously different. Vindictors had the short chainmail skirt with no cloth elements. Vanquishers had the cloth skirts. Praetors had the capes and longer chainmail loincloths. Vigilors had both capes and skirts. And Annihilators were BIG. They all had clearly distinct silhouettes. Meanwhile this guy is almost identical to a Vindictor, with the only differences besides weapon loadout (helmet, notches on the shield, chest badge) being so minute that in most armies they would just be part of the slight variation within a unit. Two random battle sisters from the same sprue have more distinctions than this Liberator and the Vindictor does.

That's true, they are very easy compared to old Liberators now. I don't know why people said old Liberators were easy to paint. I had easier time painting Chaos Warriors or Beastmen. Many more armies are easier to paint than Stormcast, cause they don't have golden trim, and flat surfaces everywhere. But these new Vindictors, and Liberators too, are at least a bit easier to paint than old Liberators and Sequitors (these are even a level harder)

in concept i completely love the idea of unspacemarining the stormcast range further. in that regard they look fine, great even. still feels strange to completely loose their signature chonkiness, and the way they softened some aspects of their design indead loses them quite a bit personality. ceeping the loin cloth and maybe more aspects of the helmet device would certainly have helped. i would even gone farther and make armored loin cloth their thing and add it to the back too.

As for the whole Primaris argument, I thought the thing people hated about them was the lore. The new liberator is like a new mark. It's the same Stormcast getting refitted with new armour. GW have said you can still use your old models.

Between the lack of specific ornamentations, the occasional way that the helmet and war gear is structured, and the silver color scheme of the Hallowed Knights, I think that they are trying to communicate the grimness and more dour nature of the Warhammer settings. Hmm, Their was something that was bothering me about the new model, but I couldn't tell until it was side by side. First, without the scale loin cloth Drawing your eye up into the abs, their legs feel Bare and boring, i understand why they are smaller, to avoid ground marine jokes, But Without either Big thick armour their or something to draw the eyes up, The bottom half just looks boring, a single unbroken colour.
Secondly, the shield. I hate the smaller shield. This might be minor, But I fucking Love tower shields, I love Bigass shields that could substitute for a wall. The shield is now smaller, And With that open stance, It leaves his core, already feeling Sammy because of the bottom half, Also feeling bare, unlike the original who's chest is partially covered, Drawing your eye to the shields heraldry. personally, My eyes from the base, To the Loincloth, Up to the chest, Flick over to the shield and then his face on the first model, which does have it problems, but it know how to draw the eyes. The new model lacks that, It feels to open and with al of the core being silver, it lacks details to focus the eyes.
Helmets good though, I actually like the Big ass nose guard way better then the plain golden mask.

I think it was Dope, like a medieval rubric marine or necron and in the new setting a Sigmar Angel. I always liked the idea that there were no bodies inside the armor just pure thunder energy and the soul and when they died they get released and fly back to heaven in a light stream sorta the Noah movie with rusell crowe when the rock fallen angels got killed. • @RandomIdiotGS
    @RandomIdiotGS 5 місяців тому +2

I don't collect AoS, but your feedback seems fair. It seems that they were put in line with the Vindictors and it's weird how some parts of them stand out. The comically large hammers are fine if they are meant to represent their greater strength, if paired with a shield that can match the size. The more slender knight builds are also a bit unfortunate because I always considered Liberators to be kind of the Space Marines of AoS in that it gave bulky standout "human" units for the forces of Order; they worked as a beautiful counterpart to the typically bulky warriors of Chaos armies (and yes, I know that them being an AoS counterpart to Space Marines is a complaint for some). In contrast with these models and also with models like the Vindictors I feel like I just see a horde of Balthasar Gelt's, lol.
As for the line down the middle of their helmet... at first I wasn't bothered by it but the more I look at the models the more it starts to bother me. It's like they absolutely wanted them to resemble some sort of Spartan helmet or any helmet with a nose cover... by reinforcing it on the outside? Like, it literally looks as if it's riveted on there. Why? At least the halos represent a sun, light and order (despite being impractical) and historically speaking there were armies that on occassion used impractical helmets to intimidate their foes, but the reinforced nose seems like... they just wanted a nose (cover) riveted on? I feel like this is the typical artist mistake where you keep adding fluff for your fantasy character/model and thus end up making something worse. If the thing itself doesn't explain why it's there, you probably shouldn't add it in the first place.
With that said, the lion shoulder pad looks cool. The lack of scapular/groin armour/tabard and being replaced with like an armoured skirt is fine from a practical and historical usage of armour point of view, but it does feel like the model lost some character. It's all a bit of a mixed bag, really... but thematically the old Liberators look like a more complete, more fitting and faction identifying model.

    • @clinch4402

I wouldn't go as far as to call them a "beautiful counterpart" to chaos warriors. If anything they utterly nullified the intimidation factor of chaos. Stormcast have always been mistake in that regard. Now they're a better proportioned mistake, minus the goofy hammers.

Hard agree on a lot of this. Generally upgraded sculpts, but with plenty of hangups that make it difficult to love. Like the prominent "schnoze", the shoulder pads that are now just slightly _too_ small for the intended bulk the unit is supposed to convey.
I think my creative differences with these sculpts is that, irrespective of the aesthetic value, they fail to fully capture the visual language of the originals. The loss of the tabards, the changed shield, the helmet band. They all deviate from qualities that made Liberators what they were. If you showed these to a Stormcast player but didn't tell them they were new Liberators, would they be able to tell that's what GW was going for? I don't know that they would. Enough distinctive details are altered that they just don't jive.
The resculpt should have taken the original design and given it "proper" proportions. Undeniably the ones we got solved major problems with the originals. They LOOK like the armor fits them now. At the same time, they don't look enough like Liberators anymore. They look like a completely new unit, that was then handed hammers.
It's sort of the same problem I have with the Demon's Souls remake versus the original. Undeniably looks good. But with design changes that alter the details or intent of the original. Enough that it kind of bothers me.
