agreed - 40 years onwards and current music trash like pink, miley siphilus etc are 10,000 rungs lower as far as REAL talent goes, compared to the 80's musicians... Stay Blessed..
The phrase "Big in Japan" from the 1984 song by the band Alphaville refers to the idea of being famous or successful in a distant or foreign place, especially in Japan, while remaining unknown or struggling elsewhere. In the context of the song, it symbolizes escaping reality and fantasizing about success or a better life in a faraway place. Japan was chosen because, during the 1980s, many Western artists and bands who didn't achieve mainstream success at home were surprisingly popular in Japan. The song itself is more about yearning for a better future and dealing with personal struggles (such as love and addiction), using the notion of being "Big in Japan" as a metaphor for an idealized escape or sense of hope. In Portuguese it's similar to the saying, "Santo de casa não faz milagre", or "Home grown saints don't work miracles".
fun fact: when this came out, the singer Marian Gold was still working as cooks mate in his hometown in Germany. it got a lot of radio airplay and so one of the cooks said: "son, they are playing your song all day long" and fired him. so the singer was fired because his boss didn't want him to waste his career peeling potatoes
The boss said " Du bisch zu gut du arroganter Arsch. Geh naus und zeig dene wer dr Chef isch. Aber du musch mir trotzdem noch die 5 Euro vom Dorffescht letschtes Jahr geben"
What’s even crazier, and possibly very inspiring/motivating for aspiring musicians, is that none of them knew how to play any instruments; and yet, they still managed to produce such great music. With technology of the times (synthesizers, drum/rhythm machines, etc), they were able to turn the music they had in their heads into reality, without any knowledge of playing instruments…a magical time. Nowadays, it’s even easier…but you still need the talent/creativity to produce magic like this.

Up to this day 10.06.2023, I am still playing this song loud and in a row in my Studio. The sound is so great and timeless, it makes you just wanna dance. The voice from Marian is crystal clear and energetic. I mastered the lyrics and any day I am in Japan. I will go to a park full of people, stand in the middle and will sing this song acapella as loud as possible. I will be 'Big In Japan'😎
What can I say about Alphaville? Really love their sound got into their music whilst travelling around the world living out of a suitcase...and they still stimulate my senses 35 years later

This song has been huge in Greece literally ever since it came out. I was 5 or 6. And I've been dancing and singing to it all my life since then. To me it's perfection, it's what music should be like, I can't imagine anyone not liking it.
It was aired on mtv pretty hard for a short period around 1984, never to be seen/heard from again for decades it seems. I do vaguely remember it, but I was a video junkie back then,
daniel cross was the original slowed down tho? I dont know if its because ive heard the other version so much, but this one just seems like hes singing so slower and im not sure if he sang it this slow or they slowed the track down?
Still one of the best songs ever. I've listened to it most days since it came out. Which means I have listened to it 10,000+ times. Thanks for the enjoyment, Alphavile.
The song is sad indeed. It is about a doubt of a boy if to leave the drug life without his girlfriend or to stay addicted with her. Big in Japan is an idiom and it is the delusion of losers who pretend to be big and popular somewhere far away.
This song is about a heroin-addicted couple at Berlin Zoo-Station dreaming about what life could be - far far away - without their addicition. Thats actually what "Big in Japan" originally meant (its the name of a british band): When you are a loser or an outcast you might be able to have a good life in a place far away. This song makes me feel strongly hurt for the many addicted people all over the world who want to have a decent life but just can't break free :'( Great song and rightfully an 80's classic.

One of the greatest masterpieces in pop music history.
Thankful for friends who turned me onto these artists.
This song should will be considered one of the best song of the history's new wave, isn't?
Yes,definitely😄
I don't know how this band come to the idea of this song. 👏👏👏
I lived and studied in the city where this band comes from...the small, beautiful and clean city of Münster.💚
Six years in Münster and Münster is my home town in Germany.
It's about his sordid life near the zoo.. drugs etcetera.. it's great
What can I say about Alphaville? Really love their sound got into their music whilst travelling around the world living out of a suitcase...and they still stimulate my senses 35 years later
Sandy, it's international music, pride is global

forever Alphaville!
This song is aging very well. Infact it has become almost seminal. It oozes pure 80s out of every pore. Such an underrated masterpiece. Bravo.
Why underrated? Don't agree
Discovered this song on accident when UA-cam music put together a playlist for me. And now I can't get enough of it. It's on repeat pretty much every day. 😁 Awesome tune.
Alphaville. 1984. Music was just that. Music.
@@simonanders5676 I was born in 1979. I grew up with 80's music.

I'd completely forgot about it till a few years back when I heard it as background music on a TV show, immediately went on UA-cam to find it and listened to it constantly for days. Massively underrated song

Winter's cityside, crystal bits of snowflakes
All around my head and in the wind
I had no illusions that I'd ever find
A glimpse of summer's heatwaves in your eyes
You did what you did to me
Now it's history, I see
Here's my comeback on the road again
Things will happen while they can
I will wait here for my man tonight
It's easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan, tonight
Big in Japan, be tight
Big in Japan, where the Eastern sea's so blue
Big in Japan, alright
Pay, then I'll sleep by your side
Things are easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan

Of strange illuminated mannequins

Or shall I go and change my point of view

This song came back to me as i woke up yesterday, buried somewhere in my head all these years later. Watched the movie The Burbs a few days ago. I was very much child of the 80s.
I absolutely love 80s music and I don’t understand how this song got passed me. It’s so good. I miss the good ol days.

Except that the song has nothing to do with Japan...
@@Bubbles-od2tv what’s the title of the song?
@@verangium It's a metaphor ... It was a sarcastic saying in the music industry back then, that even if you're not big in your country, you can just say in you're big in Japan, and no one in your country would know.

This slowed-down version is much better than the original. And the music video, it's just brilliant. Such powerful imagery.

Pay
@@MikerBikerB Pay with drugs or pay the drugs. Drug addiction is the main theme of the song, not prostitution. He explained numerous times. The lyrics are based on a poem he wrote in late 70s and at first he refused to used it at it was based on old story.

this is the second song I did sing to on a disco floor in my life..how can I possibly forget about that? thanks Alphaville..love from Italy
people say that pop music cant be timeless but I beg to differ. Superb tune and the lyrics behind it have a poetic message too.
idk i like how pop get dated like u listen to synth pop and u can tell its from the 80s but in a good way
Thanks guys of Alphaville for the beautiful moments we could enjoy listening to your music ❤
The first three seconds of this song are better than any of the garbage out today.
Perfectly said.
Agree it really sets a tone/mood...love music that can provoke this. That is the real mccoy. WHat id give to be a teenager again

It was aired on mtv pretty hard for a short period around 1984, never to be seen/heard from again for decades it seems. I do vaguely remember it, but I was a video junkie back then,
Not a big hit in the US unfortunately, but in south America this was played alot in bars. At least, according to my Peruvian dad.
the 80s....incomparable movies/music and tv !
The 80s was a vibe, something about the 80s sound of snare never gets old
Songs like this are classic. They will never fade.
True 💯
Thank the good lord for the 1980’s. An era to always aim for. This will never change
I dunno why but I love this version of the song better than any other version. I just love how it sounds a little bit deeper and slower, it's amazing
Because it has been slowed down a bit
Ghoulin_ Its actually the original. What you talking about is the album version.
I agree, I like this slower version better ...
Ane Brun tho.... nothing beats her version
daniel cross was the original slowed down tho? I dont know if its because ive heard the other version so much, but this one just seems like hes singing so slower and im not sure if he sang it this slow or they slowed the track down?
Still one of the best songs ever. I've listened to it most days since it came out. Which means I have listened to it 10,000+ times. Thanks for the enjoyment, Alphavile.

The song is sad indeed. It is about a doubt of a boy if to leave the drug life without his girlfriend or to stay addicted with her. Big in Japan is an idiom and it is the delusion of losers who pretend to be big and popular somewhere far away.
This is the best song in the whole world. I can play it on loop for the rest of my life and I would be the happiest person ever.

This song makes me feel strongly hurt for the many addicted people all over the world who want to have a decent life but just can't break free :'(
Great song and rightfully an 80's classic.
