Keep up the good work and your good spirit...when I'm faced with challenges like this I remember my Dad & Mom trying to survive on the farm where I was born with their 11 children (I am the youngest with my twin brother) and all the hard and extra work they had to do in the winter...just imagine no running water, no electricity, no barn cleaner and milking the cows by hand, among many others things. We should appreciate all the machines and equipment that make our lives so much easier nowadays.
You all take care of yourselves. The farm and cows need you, and so do we. Hearts out and hats off for everybody. Ps: I'll quit cryin about our 23° weather down here in Northwestern Washington, USA. Lol
Jan, I can hear in your voice just how tired you are, severe cold is very debilitating and energy draining, i have never felt the temps you have to endure everyday, cant imagine how i would cope. Best wishes to you and all the family for all the hard work you have to do to keep these animals fit & healthy.
Good video Jan, thanks for putting it together with interesting activities!! The ladies were ready for you to push their food up a bit closer. Stay warm out there!!
Yes this cold has been brutal. Yesterdays wind chill was - 55 C. People are freezing to death, apartments going days without heat in Saskatoon and vehicles everywhere refusing to start. It is days like this why we wonder why we live here but it is short lived and we put our heads down and soldier through it. The days are getting longer and soon this will all be behind us. Stay strong everyone.
Your ladies "cows" are so well treated. The two "fans" that were following you the one looked like she was dancing or wanting to play = happy cow . Cows are so patient bless them
Yhon. Thank You very much for the videos. Stay warm, I have lived in the cold and once you get in side in the warm you can fall asleep very easy. Please Take Care of your self Plus Be Very Care Full around all Farm Equipment.
I have been watching, subscribed and I even hit that bell, ☺️ for almost 2 weeks. I am fascinated by your job. The poo and the pee not so much. It’s a cycle, you plant the feed, Feed the cows, they give you milk Pooh and pee. Spread the Pooh on a field and plant more feed. 😄. Thank you for doing what you do so we all can have milk. I would love to walk up to a cow and squirt some milk in my coffee the way I’ve seen you do. Very cool job!😎
So glad you got a fix for the crowd gate. Those heaters are great for toasting a baloney sandwich on a construction site at lunch time. lol. Winter is sure tough on workers, but just think, spring is coming. Loved the video as usual and thanks till the next one.
Thank you Jan for taking the extra time to film on these miserable conditions. The white cow following you was very funny, I think that she wanted to play with you.
Much respect to you, young man! We take farmers for granted, because we just don’t get to see all the hard work it takes. Thanks for sharing your videos and giving us a glimpse of your daily work life. 365 days regardless...Thank you. 🐄
I was on a ship in the arctic and we would get ice build-up on the superstructure which would screw around with stability. We would get welder's picks and chip ice and when we got to metal we would use a spray bottle filled with used oil to spray the metal. It did not stop build-up completely but it made it more manageable.
Thanks Jan. So glad to view another SaskDutch vid. That's the way to keep that hopeful attitude! Yes, warmer weather is on its way. . .maybe not until June though!! 😒🌴⛱🌴 You're amazing! Hang in there.
Poor guy go home hot shower, hot food warm bed night night. Good job keep warm. I’m in Canada Ontario not near as cold as you guys but cold enough minus anything is darn cold only -20 here .
Washer Fluid is too thin to stay on a flat surface long enough to be effective in your application. I don't know if it'd be safe or even economical to try a jug of engine coolant (which is thicker) on one door section to see if it works better. I guess it depends on how costly burning diesel is. At least you get free heat inside the building as a bonus from that. Thanks for taking the time to record all of that to share with us when you're so busy.
Jan, right after you said you were going to put on that widow washer fluid. I immediately thought to myself. "There is already moisture in between every single one of those hinges and it will not penatrate them." Maybe next year just prior to the heavy condensate days you can spray it? Who ever suggested it had a really good idea i believe. Good luck.
I enjoy watching your videos I hope you have a awesome weekend and happy valentine's day from south mississippi we're not near as cold as you but we're sitting around 28 to 32°
I can’t believe how the doors ice up. Jan I think what would take care of that is SPRING! 😬 great video. I won’t complain about a week of -5 here in Maine. Thanks for what you do!!👍👍
It’s always enjoyable watching your vids, not just the cool accent, but the passion you show for your job and making vids combined, keep up the great work and always stay safe. 👍
summer is here with me mate, in the magical land down under. it's stinking hot here in far north queensland australia. currently we are sitting at 29c (84f) and its only 10am.... where i live, we dream about the snow you are walking on. in my cities entire history (150 years or so), it has only snowed once in an area close to us, was roughly 100km (62ish miles) south west of my town in an out back town called charters towers. super rare event, will probably never happen again in my life time, but its cool to know that it did once. you should reach out to some farmers over this way and compare methods, it might blow your mind what goes on over here :) !
Saskatchewan winters eh! Always something! I don't know if it would work, but I am wondering if heat tape on every metal strip of the north door would work...Not sure how you would hard wire it in but even if you had to just plug it in each time you closed the door I am thinking it would make life a bit easier. Just a thought... Good job!
Dairy farming no matter where becomes miserable in real extreme cold periods- here in the UK, east coast, Norfolk, worst I've ever had -14 Deg Celsius- yes I know you Canadian guys etc will laugh at that, but because it's a real rarity we are never geared up for it- groups calves frozen water, dry cows in open fronted barns, their water frozen, milking cows walking out onto sheet ice from the cubicles to milking parlour- one thing bedding on sand is the cows retain some sand on their feet and you've always plenty to sprinkle on an icey yard! The AG sand dispenser frozen up and worst is or was the milking cows water freezing up so you spend hrs thawing ball cocks, pipes leading to troughs out- the separator for slurry totally frozen up so getting rid of muck, slurry from 260 cubicle cows each day. Long cold miserable days, I know Jan.
Hang in there buddy! Your not alone it's -40 in Minnesota right now too, fellow young dairyman here sending prayers your way! Catch some shut eye when you can even an hr or two here n there helps, make sure to eat and take care of yourself, sometimes we think about our cattle so much we forget to take care of us. God bless!!
Things always seem to break when it’s cold and on the weekends! 🤦♀️. It looks very cold there. Here in Texas seems like we are trying to out cold you! Hope not...I’m not mad for cold weather! Keep on keeping on and God Bless ❤️!
Stay strong I'm feeling your pain here in Missouri it's a cold cold monster and we're not used to that our dairies around here are just not set up for the constant cold temperatures enjoy your channel stay warm and milk on
Jan, I was watching the issue you were having with icing on those big north glass doors. Running that heater is fine as long as someone is out in the barns. A propane or diesel heater can be very dangerous. I guess I don't have to tell you the dangers of fire or if the pilot goes out thereby venting and pumping high explosive and toxic gases into the barn. I think I have a solution that would be safer all the way around. We used it as a safe way to keep our barn doors free of ice and snow since only two doors faced south. We then had two facing north, two facing east, and two facing west - so those 6 were light on sunshine. I will send you a PM. I hope the solution we had will work for you.
Winter does present many challenges which only increase with wind driven snow and temps of -40 C / F . The same for the problems that always occur on Friday afternoon. Those cows currently spending their "dry period" outside are huddled up saying "Ladies , remember, never dry out January & February again." 🐮🐄 🐄 🐄 🐄 🐄 X 5
Man, just listening to the wind blowing over the camera mic early in the video made me feel the cold. Luckily, here in NS being surrounded by the Atlantic we rarely have to deal with temperatures lower than -20, but we still can't avoid the darn snow. :-(
I appreciated my crab legs more after watching Deadliest Catch. I feel the same after watching your videos each time I enjoy a glass of milk of a bowl of ice cream.
That's poison you just sprayed which will likey be spread throughout the barn on the tires of your vehicles and could contaminate the feed. Just a concerned groupie from Toronto. A eavestrough heat cord weaved back and forth across the hinges might work as a long term solution.
i dont know how you cope with that kind of cold weather we here in the UK have have it cold for a week of about -5 I struggled with frozen water troughs for the cattle and frozen ground and a bit of snow , but know where near what you have , how you do it amazes me , GREAT JOB JAN
hi Jan, thanks for posting this video,it is very cold with you in Canada, over here in the Netherlands it is allso cold ( -13 degrees ) but thats nothing compair with you.i hoop it will be soon better with the cold wether.
Frozen doors - Yan, you are having trouble because the freezing air outside is making the door cold, and the warmer humid air inside is condensing onthe door. The fans will just push more humid air onto the door so that likely make things worse. I have seen insulation put on the inside of garage doors, however I think those were wood doors which can be nailed into. I am not sure if you can install insulation on glass doors. What about a single door that can be swung up? That has many less moving parts and may be a better option in your application.
We lived outside Prince Albert on a horse farm last year. I remember the cold and the snow. We moved back to Ontario but there's days I miss Saskatchewan.
Oh these Sk winters! I honestly think we need to look at what kind of insulation they have on the ISS for this weather. No, not a joke, not even a little.
When you sprayed windshield washer fluid and then turned on the fan, if any of the fluid stuck to the door the fan would probably blow it off. Yes Peterbilt is a great looking truck, you should try driving one for a day, you would never want to get back into the trucks you have. The temps in Alberta was up to minus 50 with the wind chill , Ben years since it was this cold and you would be every bit as cold or worse.reminds me of when I drove to the ice roads north of Yelllowknife and no trees to stop the wind and gets really cold. Try to stay warm my friend.
Try spraying the washer fluid before it ices up? Mechanics use silicone lubricant around door gaskets on car windows to prevent them from sticking in the cold. Maybe try that on the bare metal of the doors before they ice up to keep the water off them?
That weather really plays havoc on equipment, animals, buildings and men. You can hear your voice is even tired sounding. Be well, summer will be here sooner than you think.
I know you tried the windshield washer fluid . You might try using RV non toxic Pink antifreeze liquid on the doors. Don’t dilute it . More concentrated properties. Might work . Not dangerous to the animals
washer fluid needs to be applied after the frost to melt the ice buildup, but with that much buildup i think the heater is the way to go, or a combination of both ,
Bless you for the hard work and very long hours. Farmers do not get enough thanks, so THANK YOU JAN!!. I sure hope it warms up soon.
You are a true hero, caring for your herd and feeding the rest of us. Be careful and pray for a warm spell!
I'm grateful that there are hardy people like you to produce the food that we eat. To paraphrase your cap, "You farm, we eat.".
That's not a paraphrase, that's just a direct quote... To paraphrase something you are shortening the quote by just giving the points and highlights.
Amazed me how you always seems stay positive n calm without being grumpy in every situation at such a young age, inspiring 👍
Jan,
I can hear in your voice just how tired you are, severe cold is very debilitating and energy draining, i have never felt the temps you have to endure everyday, cant imagine how i would cope. I feel your pain. Feeding my cows by hand in Winnipeg.

There's gotta be a biodegradable oil out there that you could spot try with.
I am Enjoying the nice warm weather here in Kenya.
Keep up with the good work. I like your videos.
Kudos
Brilliant and informative video well done keep them up Peter UK 🇬🇧
you people are VERY brave to work in those circumstances. Very good video once again.
Thanks Jan. So glad to view another SaskDutch vid. That's the way to keep that hopeful attitude! Yes, warmer weather is on its way. . .maybe not until June though!! 😒🌴⛱🌴 You're amazing! Hang in there.

Your cold air made it all the way to northern Kansas. Take it back please. Thanks for the great videos👍🏻
Hi sashDutch farm Wahoo what a loader big up your family yan keep safe you all

Thank you, in my late senior years from my recliner in south Florida I am managing a Canadian dairy operation. Thanks to Jan and company.
I enjoy watching your videos I hope you have a awesome weekend and happy valentine's day from south mississippi we're not near as cold as you but we're sitting around 28 to 32°
A challenging week. Glad I live in La Jolla but I. Learned more about your farm.
I feel your pain man, it's like clockwork stuff breaks down on late Friday afternoon.
This brings back some memories...dairy farming is rough when it is freezing outside...a real battle.
I can’t believe how the doors ice up. Jan I think what would take care of that is SPRING! 😬 great video. I won’t complain about a week of -5 here in Maine. Thanks for what you do!!👍👍

Cold makes it hard on everyone...you do good!
you and yours are a super heroes buddy , THANK YOU ! and i remember that crazy kind of cold ,i was a prairie chicken to !
Beautiful lorry setup! Brilliant video! 💪🏴

Take care. Love your caring and hard work of the girls. Thank you for taking time to put up the video.
What a great farmer you are !! Lots of respect ❤
The cows chasing you was funny. You really treat them well especially when you had to get behind them and move them forward. Calmly moving them up.
Its cold in Scotland but nothing compared to what you deal with there Wow. Interesting video Jan
Great video, thank you for growing food we can eat. Your a very important part of our country
I appreciated my crab legs more after watching Deadliest Catch. I feel the same after watching your videos each time I enjoy a glass of milk of a bowl of ice cream.
Every machine breaks eventually. In winter, eventually comes sooner.
Funny how you call pushing the feed up with your skid steer "manual". Manual in my day was pushing with a scraper manually.
Cold weather zaps the energy out of everything
That's poison you just sprayed which will likey be spread throughout the barn on the tires of your vehicles and could contaminate the feed. Just a concerned groupie from Toronto. A eavestrough heat cord weaved back and forth across the hinges might work as a long term solution.

Stuff braking on Friday. Sounds relatable lol
Like watching "Deadliest Catch" with all of the ice build up and seeing the cold suck the energy out of you.
hi Jan, thanks for posting this video,it is very cold with you in Canada, over here in the Netherlands it is allso cold ( -13 degrees ) but thats nothing compair with you.i hoop it will be soon better with the cold wether.
Jan, you are one tough farmer dealing with all the issues that really cold weather brings to your farm. Hang in there and be sure to get your rest.

We lived outside Prince Albert on a horse farm last year. I remember the cold and the snow. We moved back to Ontario but there's days I miss Saskatchewan.
I currently live outside PA - this is not the weeks of winter to be missing Saskatchewan! lOl
@@dhansonranch I don't miss the cold. It's the snow and the peacefulness
Keep it up! It’ll get warmer soon.
I wonder if you all could put some heat trace on the roll up doors somehow to keep them from freezing?
We also have snow and tonight it was -13 ° C, but we don't have that much snow. Don't get sick with the weather and have a nice Sunday.
Great job, Jan. I can't imagine working under those conditions. It must make every chore so much harder. Best wishes and stay safe.
Thank you! I wonder if you could install electric wire heat trace on your doors and plug them in your brutal cold?
Oh these Sk winters! I honestly think we need to look at what kind of insulation they have on the ISS for this weather. No, not a joke, not even a little.
He sounds so exhausted. Thank you for the hard work you do.
You should try JIG-A-LOO Garage Door Lubricant from Canadian Tire. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing
Love your videos ... just wish there were more of them :) thanks much for posting

The cows following you are totally adorable! The challenges you face in the winter are just incredible
Haha whoever recommended the washer fluid ain’t ever gonna own up
I love that phrase "Belly dump", sounds so much better than our "Bottom discharge"! 👍
We call them bottom hoppers and belly dumping when talking about unloading.
😂
That weather really plays havoc on equipment, animals, buildings and men. You can hear your voice is even tired sounding. Be well, summer will be here sooner than you think.
The cold weather wears on you, definitely did me.
I know you tried the windshield washer fluid . You might try using RV non toxic Pink antifreeze liquid on the doors. Don’t dilute it . More concentrated properties. Might work . Not dangerous to the animals
Spring cant come soon enough winter is always a hard time
washer fluid needs to be applied after the frost to melt the ice buildup, but with that much buildup i think the heater is the way to go, or a combination of both ,
I watch these videos🔥 on my Balcony watching over my dairy 🙌🏼
I've never heard of washer fluid but they winterize sprayers with rv antifreeze because it's non toxic.
I hope it warms soon for you guys this cold weather just been miserable
Good job. No matter what comes your way you get it done!
