  • In depth process of knapping a dacite spear point. This would be a good video to watch for people just starting out knapp as I wall through every detail and talk about the best ways to reduce mass.

Fairly new to flint knapping and already don’t like obsidian. Think I got a bad batch of dacite so I’m going to try some from neolithics. Don’t mind me but you seem young. The reason I bring that up is that I find it very refreshing that unlike a lot of young people these days you do not use a lot of fillers in your speech. I turn off videos when the presenter says um, like, etc. over and over. You have a new subscriber in me. Thanks

@BruceGarahan absolutely try the spalls instead of the whole rock although the whole rock is much cheaper at $1 a pound. Thank you I try to be fairly articulate. Thanks for your support glad you are enjoying the content.

Bruce try sandstone when knapping obsidians and dacite. Make the edge angle steeper and don't strike with so much inward force

I agree with you. I don’t like obsidian. But I love dacite.

Obsidian just seems too soft sometimes. I will knap it but I much prefer almost anything else.

@RedEyedPatriot neolithics has this stuff for a 1$ a pound but shipping kills you. I could package you up some flakes but they honestly get picked through pretty regularly.

Can I make a suggestion? You can keep an eye out for where businesses and schools and stores have rocks in their landscaping or in the drainage gravel. I’ve gotten some insanely good stuff asking people if they minded if I looked through their rocks and I’ve found so much. Also, if you have a scheels where you live their entire parking lot is really really good fine grained basalt (I think) it knaps like a dream.

    Try using sandstone for obsidians
