Why War in Ukraine Might Spark Conflict Between Russia and Japan in the Pacific
Вставка

- Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last month, Western countries imposed a barrage of sanctions on Putin in an attempt to deter further violence. The only Asian country to impose sanctions was Japan, a nation that has its own history of conflict with Russia stretching back to the Russo-Japanese War of 1904/5, the battle of Khalkin-Gol in 1939 and finally the Soviet-Japanese War in late 1945. Japan and the U.S.S.R (later Russia) never signed a peace deal following the Second World War, given a dispute over 4 islands in the Kuril Archipelago situated to the north of the Japanese Island of Hokkaido. The recent conflict in Ukraine has triggered a new tone from Japanese politicians in claiming the islands which are still administered by Russia.

I had no idea that one of the islands was primarily Ukrainian. I realize your ending was a joke, but it does make sense in a way. I know you are English of Dutch ancestry. Do you consider yourself English or Dutch.? I asked because in the video when you reference the islands to be given to the Dutch you said our army and navy are not that strong. Do.... Do we tell him?
This is probably the clearest detailed description of how we've come to the current situation in the Kuril Islands I've seen. Thank you sir.
Well, this would bring the US in by function of a treaty the US and Japan made post WW2. If I can recall correctly.
The US would defend the Japan mainland yes but the islands that Japan claimed at the time of that treaty were not formally part of the country since an agreement was never made so that could be a loophole for the US not getting involved.
Australia also recently signed a military treaty agreement with japan along with the US.
@@Spongebrain97 The other loophole is America is obligated to DEFEND Japan. Much like our NATO obligations, this covers defense but does NOT cover offense. If Japan wants to try to take these islands that's offense so America is not required to help them win their battle. If Japan were to be suddenly invaded by Russia or China, yes, America would absolutely send its military to drive out the invaders but we're not going to help Japan capture territory.
That’s fine, russia needs to lose a war to stop waging so many wars against democracies and installing permanent dictators.

*Ah yes so what’s the dam point of the AUKUS then ? It’s almost like the Indo-Pacific nonsense didn’t work as much cause India likes Russia and Japan has it’s own interests which led America to form AUKUS which actually has a mutual true interest*
If America gave 2 dams about containing China then they would not fund China directly and would even recognize Taiwan which they did NONE
The reason why there is much debate and why Russians won't budge is not some sense of pride of nationalism. Same for Japan. So your solution won't work. Everyone wants those islands for one simple reason - economy. If Russia continues to own those islands, the entire Sea of Okhotsk is basically theirs as all the landmass around it would be Russian and Russians could dictate who goes in or out of that sea which is actually quite large. Other would like Russia not to have those islands for the same reason - breaking that island chain, even a little bit, opens up the entire sea for other interested parties.
So the solution, while silly and fun, is simply unrealistic when the real reasons behind the claims are considered.
Islands give a huge area for exploitation around them - that's why China is making artificial ones all over the South China Sea. And with Kurils, islands are already there. A chain of natural islands that closes the entire sea to outside world. Fishing, oil and gas, and in the future - blue agriculture, or aquaculture, for food security. Sea of Okhotsk is so large that if being a land area, it would be the 18th largest country in the world, between Mongolia and Iran.
So no, no one will give up their claim on those islands. While islands themselves are relatively poor and barren, they give you the access to huge wealth in the Sea of Okhotsk.
Doesn't there some rule in United Nation's Convention on the Law of the Sea that forbids to dictate who goes through (unless for certain security measures) or demand money for passage?
Technically, Russia and Japan are still at war. Japan could just claim to be defending it's Northern Territories.
Btw, Azerbaijan has attacked several Armenian outposts. Russia has peacekeepers there. What's stopping Moldova from reclaiming Transnistria? What's stopping Georgia from reclaiming South Ossetia?
And Germany reclaiming koningsberg / kalingrad
And Chechnya breaking away or Finland reclaiming the territory the Soviet Union took last century.
@@ryeguy7941 Putin said that Russia will return to it's historical borders. But he didn't specified the century, so there bill be XV century borders )))

@@peter-8483 They were offered it before by the Soviet Union and refused, they didn't want a bunch of ethnic Russians that could be used as a pretext for military action in their country. Giving the Netherlands the middle islands would be a big powermove, as the Netherlands are part of the EU and NATO.
I'm Japanese and I love your proposal regarding the islands at the end of your video! 🤣
Putin's Russia will never agree to give up anything, especially not to the currently weak and still mostly disarmed country of Japan. Unfortunately, Putin only respects and responds to strength and military force.

Instead of Netherland, one island should go to Switzerland and other to Austria. They are neutral and currently landlocked.
@Laika24102007 Well, Netherland is certainly not neutral.
Okay, but what Russia did with the island of Etorofu is actually happening again! I read today on RTL Nieuws that they are deporting Ukrainians from Marioepol to the island of Sakhalin, should Japan start a "Special Miltary Operation'' to ''liberate'' the island and help the ethnic Ukrainians there? Or should the dutch colonize the island for its gas reserves, so that Groningen doesn't sink into the ground next year?
If this is true somewhere it is written, then the sources that you read are just a phantasmagoria. Fighting is underway in Mariupol, a hot spot. And in your opinion, the Russians are looking for Ukrainians there and send them apparently by plane or something, to the other side of the planet? For what?
@N Fels The Dutch have been doing a good job fighting the sea it would be a shame to start losing now.
I agree that the Islands should be given to the Dutch people. Also I feel maybe 30-45 percent of both Russia and Japan should be given to my Country, Eire as we need the space.

@@patriotenfield3276 well the russian civil was more a politcal/diplomatic defeat than a military one for the japanese the only reason they left siberia was because the british and the us were kind starting to get a bit worried that japan was planning on expanding might get too powerful. also internal issues involving the taisho emperor proabbly played a big role because the miltary were effectivly able to take control of the goverment and the rest is history.

So, people say that if other countries got involved in the Ukraninan conflict that it would be WW3. Why in the world Ukraine should trade Crimea for Iturup? Let’s start from the fact that area of Iturup Island - 1230 sq miles and the area of Crimean Peninsula - 10000 sq miles. Distance from Ukraine to Iturup - 5k miles. I guess that was some kind of joke in the end. You could finish with statement that Russia should give back to Finland Karelia’s territories, to Georgia - Abkhazia and South Ossetia, to Moldova - Transdnistria and Königsberg to Germany.
To add to this mess, what do you think about the fact that thousands of Ukrainians who have been forcibly deported from Mariupol to Russia, have been sent to Sakhalin?
That's better than I thought would happen, I was concerned they were being sent to gulags or coal towns in Siberia. I wonder if Japan could accept refugees from the eastern side of Russia? Assuming those who have been forcibly displaced can escape.
It would be somewhat cruel and entirely possible for the Russians to send the deposed Ukrainians from one disputed region to another.
0:38 Why does your map show Sakhalin as a peninsula and not an island?
This is a completely sincere question. I assume you got this map from someplace else, and I am wondering what map resource made such a big mistake.
The Battle of Shumshu
the Soviet invasion of Shumshu in the Kuril Islands, was the first stage of the Soviet Union's Invasion of the Kuril Islands in August-September 1945 during World War II.
Strength
Imperial Japanese Army: 8,821 troops, 64 ships and craft
The Soviet Red Army: 8,824 troops, 77 tanks
Result
Japanese casualties: 191 killed
Soviet's casualties: 2,421 to 4.500 killed
Since the war was over, the equipment and morale of the Japanese army had declined. However, the Soviet army was completely defeated even by the Japanese army.
Thats because it was a contested naval landing against fortified positions. If you wanted to see a more fair fight look at how the Soviets kicked japans ass in the machria campaign. Being so used to fighting the Germans the Japanese Eastern front was a cake walk, the Soviets had better planes , tanks, weapons, etc.

One small correction for the history portion
The first treaty signed between Russia and Japan about their northern border (the treaty of Shimoda) did not affirm that Japan controlled the entirety of the Kurils, but merely the 4 southern ones Japan now claims as their northern territories, which is essentially the crux of the Japanese argument about them belonging to Japan, as they argue only the ones given to Russia in said treaty count as part of the Kuril islands, making the southern 4 not mentioned in any peace treaties between the allies and Japan, hence still belonging to Japan.
The second treaty mentioned in the video was the one that gave the Japanese the rest of the Kurils, as, in the previous treaty, Sakhalin in its entirety was left as a neutral area for both Japanese and Russian colonists. As time went on however, much more Russians went than Japanese, and so the Japanese essentially traded their rights in Sakhalin (allowing Russia to annex it) for the rest of the Kurils.
Russia breaks the treaty and occupies it without permission.

@good no you are not correct.
good lmfao “nobody even judges them” yeah not too many people like Russia anymore.
Japan isnt ukraine 😂 japan has a modern navy, silent sub and possible a nuclear power.
OMG SOO FUNNY AHAHAHAHHAUHAHAHAHAHAHHAH BASED 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 SUCH A FUNNY COMMENT I CANT BRO I WOULD BE SO SAD IF U DIDNT POST IT

It is a Naval power on rise, sure. JMSDF.
but I cannot say the same for JASDF and JGSDF.
Japan: Get the gundams and underaged school girls. Its time to fight like its 1905.
No. Russia knows Japan is protected by the US. Russia and Japan's relations are actually quite good.
are you russian?
The last islands the Dutch were allowed to maintain in Polynesia they left with all of the inhabitants executed, "just in case someone else would've thought this place could be valuable." Worst possible manager you could have picked.
Plus, they're part of NATO.
So it's not much of a buffer zone.
Lmao that's as to be one of the most spiteful things to do in history.
Not a perfect buffer state because the Netherlands is part of NATO, there is always the risk that if there was conflict there it could trigger article 5, where as just being a more isolated conflict between Russia and Japan.
I hope that Japan will take all Russian territories, so I will finally have normal neighbours. Greetings from Ukraine
Anime neighbours
Dude that’s so unlikely japan doesn’t have the ability to take the islands without having to deal with the Russian Eastern fleet, and of japan attacks first you damn well know China will jump in too. The islands will always be Russian because of ww2 , also nukes , japan has none.
Eww
nah that will be worse for you, If that's happenned that's mean america lost control of japan and The Empire of Japan reborn
@@IslamistSocialist371 It was a joke. But I would realy like erase the russian federation from the map of the world. In 21 century, with internet and all technologies people of this country still accept all destruction and massacre their country created. Thay care only about Instagram, Ikea and Mcdonalds. This empire sinking in blood
So then we could get a for reals world war 3 going? Finally! The war on terror was so esoteric and miasmic. An axis vs allies style world war or new cold war is much easier to understand.
(This is 90% a joke btw lol)
The other 10% of the statement: "cowabunga it is!"
Hell ya lets go!!! The MIC can sell with rrcord profit so they'll be happy. The nuclear winter will help stop global warming, so the greens will be happy too! Its a win win!!!
There is no way in hell China wouldn't try to seize the Senkaku Islands if another Russo-Japanese war broke out, too good of an opportunity to miss.
You have to think that this will pull in the US which is the last thing China wants
The Russian Empire stole the Far East (eg. Outer Manchuria, Vladivostok, etc) from Qing China in the unequal treaties. I think China would rather take back the lands Russia they stole from them rather than lands Russia stole from Japan.
Yeah, don't thinkso. With the US army parked there, and the entire area full of US subs, destroyers, frigates, aircraft and Japanese navy design to sink the Chinese navy... that would be a very dumb attempt. Just think about Russia whose military was supposedly modernize and is unable to deal with Ukraine or achieve air supremacy. They will not last against Japan's F35s and F16s. Also, the Russian navy won't be able to hold its own against the Japanese.
Right now China outmatchs the Japanese navy
@@resistencialiberal9555 America wouldn't risk war with China over the Senkaku Islands if Japan attacked Russia, taking on both at such unfavourable terms does not seem logical.
11:36.
- "Japan can't deploy JSDF outside Japan's borders"
-"Northern territories are part of Japan proper being occupied by USSR/Russia since 1945"
-???
- -PROFIT- Port Arthur 2: Electric Bogaloo.
still, internationally , it is recognised as part of Russian Federation, including JSDF's weapon master , The US too recognises Kuril and Sakhalin as part of Russia.
The one who attacks first will lose the war here.
The One who stays in defense will win for sure.
Is Russia trying to get wiped off the map? Because at this point the world at large will happily oblige. Tired of this shit every couple of years.
Yes attack the country with the most nuclear warheads in the world sounds like a fantastic idea, this is what happens when you back someone into a corner.
