Why War in Ukraine Might Spark Conflict Between Russia and Japan in the Pacific
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 бер 2022
- Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last month, Western countries imposed a barrage of sanctions on Putin in an attempt to deter further violence. The only Asian country to impose sanctions was Japan, a nation that has its own history of conflict with Russia stretching back to the Russo-Japanese War of 1904/5, the battle of Khalkin-Gol in 1939 and finally the Soviet-Japanese War in late 1945. Japan and the U.S.S.R (later Russia) never signed a peace deal following the Second World War, given a dispute over 4 islands in the Kuril Archipelago situated to the north of the Japanese Island of Hokkaido. The recent conflict in Ukraine has triggered a new tone from Japanese politicians in claiming the islands which are still administered by Russia.

One small correction for the history portion
The first treaty signed between Russia and Japan about their northern border (the treaty of Shimoda) did not affirm that Japan controlled the entirety of the Kurils, but merely the 4 southern ones Japan now claims as their northern territories, which is essentially the crux of the Japanese argument about them belonging to Japan, as they argue only the ones given to Russia in said treaty count as part of the Kuril islands, making the southern 4 not mentioned in any peace treaties between the allies and Japan, hence still belonging to Japan.
The second treaty mentioned in the video was the one that gave the Japanese the rest of the Kurils, as, in the previous treaty, Sakhalin in its entirety was left as a neutral area for both Japanese and Russian colonists. As time went on however, much more Russians went than Japanese, and so the Japanese essentially traded their rights in Sakhalin (allowing Russia to annex it) for the rest of the Kurils.
Russia breaks the treaty and occupies it without permission.
I love how you always find a way to interject the Dutch national anthem in your videos. You brought out some interesting facts about the Kuril islands that I was not aware of. I had no idea that one of the islands was primarily Ukrainian. I realize your ending was a joke, but it does make sense in a way. I know you are English of Dutch ancestry. Outstanding video analysis Hilbert! With that being said I have to disagree with it. Russia and Japan are in no position to get into any military conflict over the disputed islands. “In the current situation the Russian side has no intention of continuing peace treaty talks with Japan, for it is impossible to discuss the signing of a fundamental treaty in bilateral relations with a country that takes an outspokenly unfriendly stance and tries to cause harm to the interests of our country,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Japan had earlier imposed several sanctions on Moscow by prohibiting a total of 300 products from export to Russia, including semiconductors, equipment for shipping and aviation safety, means of communication, military products, including weapons, software and oil refining equipment.
@good Maybe, but South Korea and Taiwan both have a interest in a Japan capable of helping out vs China, Russia or North Korea.
And the US *does* have the capability to operate in and around Japan without much problems and fighting multiple wars in different continents still, even if this capability is diminishing somewhat.
If given American logistical support Europe can also operate in Japan and around Japan.
In both cases local friendly ports are of course needed.
But basically unless Russia and China is able to take or destroy (with nukes?) all South Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and probably also Philippine and Vietnamese ports there's really not much else that China and Russia could do to keep the west out of the area in case of a war.
The other nations of course don't *like* Japan and their lack of recognition of the atrocities they committed.
But they still recognize that they *need* Japan for geopolitical reasons.
@good Why not both?
@good Australia is closer to Japan.

Unfortunately, our military (SDF) is limited to even the bullets they shoot in training. So little money is allocated to the military that it appears to be allocated 2 percent of GDP, most of which is spent on state-of-the-art weaponry, etc. Furthermore, human resources are vastly inadequate. There are rumors that our escort aircraft carrier "Izumo" and other aircraft carriers have been under capacity. As a Japanese, I hope that the war in Ukraine will change the Japanese people's awareness of defense. As you can see from the map, Japan is a neighbor of the so-called "red team" such as Russia, China, and North Korea. If they all attacked Japan at once, Japan would be a pariah nation....
I know it’s a sensitive topic in Japan but you should have nuclear weapons. As a deterrent weapon. I would not count on USA. I seriously doubt they will bring nuclear destruction to US mainland and die for Japan.
2% gdp on Military is more than China and most of NATO countries. The chances of you getting into a conventional war is extremely low. Might as well focus on strategic nuclear missiles.
@@volkhen0 At least you can't count on USA with the bozos we currently have in office right now. A blind, crippled pigeon would make a better leader than Biden, Harris and Pelosi.
Your country suffered the repression of military force in Japan by allied forces, after Japan's defeat.
They literally demilitarized your country by force.
As Germany was at one point.
2% of GDP is actually a lot. Most EU countries and NATO members (except for the USA) have been budgeting a fraction of that. When Germany announced increasing military spending to that level in response to the situation in Ukraine, it was a massive increase. Japan has the 3rd largest GDP in the world. While they won’t call it a military on technicality, it’s one of the best equipped in the world.
The last islands the Dutch were allowed to maintain in Polynesia they left with all of the inhabitants executed, "just in case someone else would've thought this place could be valuable." Worst possible manager you could have picked.
Plus, they're part of NATO.
So it's not much of a buffer zone.
Lmao that's as to be one of the most spiteful things to do in history.
The reason why there is much debate and why Russians won't budge is not some sense of pride of nationalism. Same for Japan. So your solution won't work. Everyone wants those islands for one simple reason - economy. If Russia continues to own those islands, the entire Sea of Okhotsk is basically theirs as all the landmass around it would be Russian and Russians could dictate who goes in or out of that sea which is actually quite large. Other would like Russia not to have those islands for the same reason - breaking that island chain, even a little bit, opens up the entire sea for other interested parties.
So the solution, while silly and fun, is simply unrealistic when the real reasons behind the claims are considered.
Islands give a huge area for exploitation around them - that's why China is making artificial ones all over the South China Sea. And with Kurils, islands are already there. A chain of natural islands that closes the entire sea to outside world. Fishing, oil and gas, and in the future - blue agriculture, or aquaculture, for food security. Sea of Okhotsk is so large that if being a land area, it would be the 18th largest country in the world, between Mongolia and Iran.
So no, no one will give up their claim on those islands. While islands themselves are relatively poor and barren, they give you the access to huge wealth in the Sea of Okhotsk.
Doesn't there some rule in United Nation's Convention on the Law of the Sea that forbids to dictate who goes through (unless for certain security measures) or demand money for passage?
Fantastic video and a fun part at the end was awesome man. Keep up the great work.

Well, this would bring the US in by function of a treaty the US and Japan made post WW2. If I can recall correctly.
The US would defend the Japan mainland yes but the islands that Japan claimed at the time of that treaty were not formally part of the country since an agreement was never made so that could be a loophole for the US not getting involved.
Australia also recently signed a military treaty agreement with japan along with the US.
@@Spongebrain97 The other loophole is America is obligated to DEFEND Japan. Much like our NATO obligations, this covers defense but does NOT cover offense. If Japan wants to try to take these islands that's offense so America is not required to help them win their battle. If Japan were to be suddenly invaded by Russia or China, yes, America would absolutely send its military to drive out the invaders but we're not going to help Japan capture territory.
That’s fine, russia needs to lose a war to stop waging so many wars against democracies and installing permanent dictators.

If, hopefully the war doesn't escalate further and once Russia loses, maybe in a peace token the islands can be sold to Japan.
This is preferable over conquest. I mean, Russia is going to be down in the dumps in economy and everything, so like France in Napoleonic era with war being too expensive, the Louisiana area of Americas was sold to the USA. I hope this happens since it would be better than a skirmish.
In my honest opinion, I rather let it be Russian. Just as a sort of punishment for their crimes (which they haven't apologised still) which they had commited in Asia during the period of their Empires lifetime.
Japanese Empire is no more either, so your logic fails.
Since they should give up the islands because the Soviet Union is over, NATO should dissolve for the same reason, that was it's sole purpose for existence. Few years ago, Putin, as he always did in the past, was hinting to Japanese government that if U.S. removes all troops and closes all U.S. bases and signs the peace treaty with Russia based on 1956 set up, then he might consider returning 2 of the 4 islands. But never materialized as Japan is no mood to close all U.S. bases in Japan. Can you imagine what will happen IF all U.S. military bases are closed and all U.S. military personnel left Japan? That will be the end of Japan. You see, back when Russia took over these 4 northern islands, Stalin even wanted to take over Hokkaido, which is the closest large island. Then Stalin's master plan did not stop here. He even wanted to occupy almost 50% of Japan's mainland, The Honshu islands, including Tokyo. One man prevented this from happening at the time when late five star general of the U.S. Army, the Supreme Commander during the WWII in the Pacific, none other than General Douglas MacArthur, had the courage to tell Russia to keep hands off from Hokkaido and Honshu and Russia backed off as they know better if they did not back off, Russia will be wiped off from earth by U.S. atom bomb. Anyway What is Putin thinking to do next? I am sure the only thing I can think is he will be trying to take over Japan, just like Ukraine right now. Another trick Putin is good at is he will request Japan to develop their vast natural resources and Russia needs Japanese technological skill and know how to do the job since Russia lags in the fields of technology. So in the past, Putin used to hint Japanese government if Japan can do, then Russia might consider resuming talks on those northern islands. But Japanese government knows very well that this was another Putin's trick and Japan was way too smart for Putin and did not fall into this trick. Putin is a man with full of tricks in which he will never succeed and doom to be failures, including in Ukraine. The bottom line to deal with Russia is just like just about 100% of Ukrainians are saying these days that never trust what Russia will say or will do as they have such bad intention to cause worldwide havoc.

When we (NL) get those island, I suggest we move the inhabitants of Urk to one of them, then declare them independent. They got to live on an island again, and we have one less problem. Win-win if you ask me...
Totally disagree.
All islands should be British! 🇬🇧
(Continents count as islands...)
Love your peace plan at the end LMAO
this man has never left 1904
I mean so far, *Japan has never lost a war with Russia so far.*
Khalkin Gol? Japan also lost Manchuria and North Korea to the Soviets
lake khasan also and a host of other border skirmishs.
also the russian civil war although that is proabbly more a case of the rest of the allies forcing japan to leave siberia because everybody was kind of getting nervous about them i don't maybe setting up a pro japanese puppet state for further expansion like they tried in china.
except 1905 (a tactical victory) , the rest were all strategic defeats for IJA.
plus haven't ukes been dropped , the it would have been much more worse.
@@patriotenfield3276 well the russian civil was more a politcal/diplomatic defeat than a military one for the japanese the only reason they left siberia was because the british and the us were kind starting to get a bit worried that japan was planning on expanding might get too powerful. also internal issues involving the taisho emperor proabbly played a big role because the miltary were effectivly able to take control of the goverment and the rest is history.
well we proabbly would have ended up with a japnese war in the 50s between a communist north japan and a us backed south japan, of course if the soviets did want to play mean they could have merged north japan with north korea and had japan-korean war instead what fun indeed.
Oh great, the Pacific War Part 2.
Hahaha goed gedaan Hilbert!
I honestly spat out my Fanta Orange to that idea of separatist Kuril islands from Japan.
Why is it that Germany as a defeated aggressor loses territory permanently but Japan also as a defeated aggressor is viewed more favourabley???
Am I missing something 🤔
The german government of the federal republic accepted the borders to Poland in a treaty.
Only Königsberg (no Kaliningrad) was up to debate in the 90s.
Not sure if it is a rumor, but sowjets might have offered it for sale, but it was rejected as to expansive.
To bad, nowadays Putin parks some of his rockets direct under the nose of EU members
Huh? Japan lost everything they conquered in WWII except a few islands off their own coast. Am I the one missing something? Did they keep China and the Philippines?
@@MrTaxiRob No, but the world still has a good view of them, depicting them as the cute little Kawai people that have a fun culture and are completely innocent, much in contrast to their massive and evil war crimes they committed across Asia, I still cant shake off what they did in Nanking. The Original commenter even said "viewed favourably".
@@boop3750 I share your view, but I was addressing the idea that Japan lost no territory upon their loss of the war. I guess you could say they weren't actually holding the conquered territory by the time it was over, but the same was true for Germany.
@@MrTaxiRob they did lose territory, before the war they had korea, Taiwan and a bunch more islands in the Pacific
So then we could get a for reals world war 3 going? Finally! The war on terror was so esoteric and miasmic. An axis vs allies style world war or new cold war is much easier to understand.
(This is 90% a joke btw lol)
The other 10% of the statement: "cowabunga it is!"
Hell ya lets go!!! The MIC can sell with rrcord profit so they'll be happy. The nuclear winter will help stop global warming, so the greens will be happy too! Its a win win!!!
The end was...unexpected. I get some Wendover/Hald as interesting vibes.
Nice.
Can you do a video of Portugal during WW2?
If Japan seized land now there's not much Russia could do about it. Conventionally that it.
They would have to make landings while dealing with the Russia east pacific fleet and Air Force. Plus Russia has nukes I don’t see japan being the aggressor in this case.
I agree that the Islands should be given to the Dutch people. Also I feel maybe 30-45 percent of both Russia and Japan should be given to my Country, Eire as we need the space.
No they shouldn'y because why would the Netherlands wants it in the first place? Also bare in mind that the Nehterlands is a member of NATO and Russia does not want a NATO member close to it's borders.
@@themalaysianpatriot3099 its a joke.
@@Oscarspoem It's not even funny so you can't call it a joke if there is nothing funny about it.
@@themalaysianpatriot3099 Jesus. Get a life or an IQ for yourself.
Cool 😎 video bro
Finally- Type 10's in action
After the Russo-Ukraine issue, now Japan is the next target in the Island area between Northern Japan & Eastern Russia. Got another issue last time China wanted to do military drills in reality.
it is not at all. Ukraine issue is more than enough to force NATO on the table. for a while. The next is possibly India and an alliance between it's two enemy neighbors Pakistan and China .over territory disputes . last time things went hot between India and China in Galwan clashes , leading to 20 KIA on Indian side and 35-40 Chinese Casualties ( Non chinese sources) and 20-25 "accidental deaths in the aftermath" ( leaked Chinese sources) .
I hope that Japan will take all Russian territories, so I will finally have normal neighbours. Greetings from Ukraine
Anime neighbours
Dude that’s so unlikely japan doesn’t have the ability to take the islands without having to deal with the Russian Eastern fleet, and of japan attacks first you damn well know China will jump in too. The islands will always be Russian because of ww2 , also nukes , japan has none.
Eww
nah that will be worse for you, If that's happenned that's mean america lost control of japan and The Empire of Japan reborn
@@trk1b28varianrhesa4 It was a joke. But I would realy like erase the russian federation from the map of the world. In 21 century, with internet and all technologies people of this country still accept all destruction and massacre their country created. Thay care only about Instagram, Ikea and Mcdonalds. This empire sinking in blood
Philippians 4:6 ✝️Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.✝️
Loved the end hahah
All of this was an excuse to re start the dutch empire
Is Russia trying to get wiped off the map? Because at this point the world at large will happily oblige. Tired of this shit every couple of years.
Yes attack the country with the most nuclear warheads in the world sounds like a fantastic idea, this is what happens when you back someone into a corner.
10:00 man. You had me goin
Just a note that some of the sentences are cut off in the voice over.
We must protect the weebs
Here is a very similar, slightly improved solution:
The most northern islands remain Russian.
The Northern territories belong to Nippon.
The two middle islands become the Netherlands.
Ukraine receives its pre-2014 borders.
The Netherlands will be under Russian rule, instead.
Everyone is happy!🥳
God imagine the Netherlands actually go under Russian control💀
“Dutch Autonomous Republic”
Regional Capital:Amsterdamsk
Shut up Netherlands under Russian rule? Bullcrap
@@magnuscritikaleak5045 Imagine the envy of the Swedes. They tried it so hard for the better part of a century, by now. The new Mother-twin-islands will be the cherry on the top as a reminiscence of the Netherlands colonial prowess.
Wouldn't it be truly magnificent!?
The long awaited sequel….
I love it!
