THE GENERAL LEE 10 METER RADIO CONVERSION AND AMPLIFIER DISCUSSION

  • Sorry about the choppy video quality I had to spend all day trying to recover it.
    For those who may be disappointed that I didn’t show how to convert the radio I’ll say this: The things that I do on my channel and any rules that I may break is entirely on me as a person. The FCC may crack down on me for modifying a general lee (Although I highly doubt that) But they can’t say that I taught my subscribers to break any laws.

    Lol You don't want to put the heat on yourself but you will throw it on the manufacturer saying they know you're going to do it so they make it easy for you.

      Yeah they do, everyone knows people use these for CB radio. These would be absolutely low tech and pointless for ham radio.
      Especially considering 10 m isn’t exactly a popular band.
      The only reason I won’t show people how to do it is because I can technically get in trouble for it with the FCC and lose my UA-cam channel.

    "Can't even get a local radio check" Well Johnny Jonesathome, that is going to get a lot worse and then become impossible in the next few years as skip gets a lot worse! One part of me say "Cool, work skip" the other part of me say "Hell, I won't even hear someone just down the road" I remember when it was bad here across the pond, it made it worse as well were offset from normal channels and sitting right on top of a Side Band! Now we have normal CB channels with AM/FM/CW.Phase/SSB we should be fine. If someone would make a decent CB for us to use! :-((

      Oh yeah man with the sun cycle is going to make things crazy
      I’m going to start live streaming when the skip gets really heavy you just stay on your radio and who knows you might double skip over here across the pond and I can pick you up
      I won’t be talking I’ll just be recording a live session I might keep it on for sever hours or at least until Skip dies
      That way all of you can try your luck at coming through my receiver!

      @@JohnnyNJones I will need to get permission to put up an antenna here, the one I have I just put up on the ground, not idea as it should be at least 9 to 18 feet off the ground to work properly, higher if you want the angle of radiation to change a bit, though for verticals it does not affect them quite as much as a inverted "V" or a horizontal dipole. I was going to sit the Ham exam this winter, but I have so much other things to do and not enough money anyway to buy the equipment I want. I should have done it years ago when I was even more interested, but I was to busy working with little thanks for it. But there you go, story of most peoples lives. Knock your pan in and no thanks for it, just some fat cat getting richer at your expense! A lot of people here are using Ham Radio equipment these days for CB as no one is making good CBs for the UK anymore, just President and they only make on AM/FM/SSB set, I think it is the Grant 11. They can be opened up to 25 watts and right up into Ham bands.
      They want to clamp down on this before it gets out of hand, it already has, but if they do nothing they will loose it and it will be a free for all. Have a good New Year when it arrives, we will already have had ours by the time it reaches you, but all all the best for 2021.

      @@BoB4jjjjs Happy new year Bob, And it’s never too late to do the things you want! By the way I know a man who uses a Kenwood ham transceiver to talk on CB bands which honest to God is the best sounding transceiver I’ve ever heard in my life. So it’s obvious with CB radio users that the manufacturer doesn’t actually think about purity or spectrum quality they just care about making it look flashy putting some buttons on it and shipping it out the door.
      Get that antenna raised and work some skip fella! Good luck in 2021!!

      It is stupid to think they may be running 1Kw just to talk to his ate just down the coast a bit, maybe 30 miles away! I can;t go up a mountain at the moment either as they closed the snow gates! :-((

      @@BoB4jjjjs Yeah it’s pretty ridiculous to need a kilowatt for CB radio. Even if you are talking skip you can do it easily with 200 watts AM
      HAMs talk country to country using 100 Watts on ssb.
      People using Morse code on CW Can use less than 10 watts to talk country to country
      So it doesn’t take a KW to talk to your buddy

    2nd question Sir, largest kicker you can use

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  3 місяці тому +1

      Haha well the answer I’m supposed to give you is “legally you can’t use a kicker on the
      CB band”
      But that’s your choice. 👍
      I will say though that most amateur radio stations put out anywhere from 100 to 200 watts and they talk to multiple countries.
      So I can’t recommend running any more power than that.
      I know some people run a lot more power, but it’s really not necessary and very wasteful on AM.
      By the way if you really want to run very high-power just get your ham License and you can legally put out 1500 watts on certain bands, you’ll talk all over the world. 😎
      If you do get an amp make sure it has an SSB switch (or an auto ssb switch) otherwise it could fry the amp if you talk on sideband.
      You’ll also want to turn down the power level on the radio as low as you can go so you don’t kill the amp.

    I bought one of these from a friend but I'm used to the basic cobra radios where I can calibrate it myself . this radio dosen't have that . I'm told to go on Amazon and get a swr meter but when I look a wide variety comes up. what am I looking for ? thank you for any....

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  2 роки тому +2

      A simple answer is: buy the “Workman SWR meter with 3 foot jumper cable” on amazon.
      I would recommend going to my channel and watching my top video called “beginners guide to CB radio” I talk about SWR meters there. You can honestly get any SWR meter (for cb radio) and it will work, if you have your own coaxial patch cables then you can buy an SWR meter without the cable

    Bought and hooked one of these radios up. Running it on low rf power, it has beautiful swr readings, but if i kick the switch up to high, i cannot for the life of me get the swr to drop, no matter how high or low I set my antenna. Any ideas?

    • @ericthiel4053

      @@JohnnyNJones I did and when I went to check it on high after resetting, it blew the 2 amp fuse in my power cord. I'm afraid to hook it up again due to not wanting to fry the radio. The meter in the radio itself stays very low even though my external meter is reading high. I've lowered my antenna to the lowest I can and have double checked the grounding in the antenna and the coax cable is brand new out of the box with no cuts or shorts. I'm stumped but will keep researching. I've got a CB shop in town as my last resort but it's kind of a gamble there, it'll be my last resort if I can't get it under control.

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  5 місяців тому

      @@ericthiel4053 don’t worry this radio draws a lot more power than a standard CB radio so that two amp fuse is probably not going to hold up anyway.
      Do you have another antenna?
      If it’s a mag mount, make sure it’s on a large enough metal surface.
      Make sure your coax jumper is working properly.
      I would try another Radio and see if the meter shows the same reading.
      You’ve already modified this Radio to talk on CB right?
      Because if you don’t modify them, they will be on 10 meter HAM bands

      @@JohnnyNJones I'll definitely check the jumper but I did hook it up to my wife's cobra classic and it was reading just fine, hers needed very little adjustments out of the box thankfully. For the antenna, I'm in a jeep wrangler 4 door with fiberglass top so Im using a mount that attaches directly to the back door which is secured by bolts that hold the spare tire carrier, it's got a real solid ground connection to the body of the jeep and the top side plastic washer is on correctly to ensure the separation. I'm running a Wilson 2000 whip. As far as modified for CB, I purchased the radio through Walcott who "peaked and tuned" it, but the description on the web site said it was ready for CB, but as you suggest I'm not 100 percent sure it's been modified specificly for CB bands which I'm looking into now. I really appreciate your responses sir!!! Your one of the only radio savvy channels that has ever answered me in a couple years of commenting so thank you!!

      @JohnnyNJones  5 місяців тому +1

      @@ericthiel4053 oh yeah, no problem I try to help out everyone who comments. My channel is still small enough that I can do that whereas other channels when they start getting big enough can’t really keep up with it.
      I’ve had the same issue a few times and sometimes I’ve hooked up the meter backwards. Make sure your coaxial cable is not pinched, if you have a multimeter, make sure that the inner and outer coaxial cable do not have any connections between them.
      Check the SWR on channel recalibrate try on channel one.
      If the SWR is different, the meter might be fine and it could be an antenna problem.
      The last guy I helped with this issue actually had pinched his coaxial cable in the door
      And if you bought it from Walcott then it’s definitely on the CB band

      Exactly why these weren’t made for 10 meters really
      The company knew people were going to use them on CB channels they just decided to make them 10 m so that they could put more power out.

      The FCC only cares when they are contacted it seems.
      CB radios used to cause alot of interference on Televisions because they used channels near 54 Mhz
      Which is the second harmonic of 27 mhz
      In the new age people don’t use AM for tv anymore, its digital signals (the fcc sold the allocation space for old tv channels). Most signals are FM and digital now. Hams don’t often use AM either.
      What I’m getting at is CB radio rarely interferes with anything, so nobody complains. When nobody complains the FCC couldn’t care less if you’re running an amp
