Hi Karen, I'm 63 and agree about quality matters I have several pieces that are over 40 years old. I have a Jones of New York coat that my sister bought 44 years ago it is all wool. It is still in excellent condition. I have a few items from my mom and dad that have to be 60 years old. The pieces are just beautiful. I love each piece and take care of them very gently. Fast fashion is not healthy for our world! So, cherish those classic pieces😍you have.
Many years ago I was shopping with my mother. I spotted a dark brown handbag. It was real suede and beautiful. At the time I was young(Junior high school) and this bag would not have been in the family budget. My mother knew I loved it. She offered to put it on layaway. I was thrilled that she would do that for me. I waited each week until it was time to pick it up. Years passed and I moved on to other bags and the suede one was given away. My mother has since passed away and I always remember that bag and how I wish I had kept it. I have searched for a replacement but never found it again. The memory of the purchase with my mother.,the first real quality bag I ever had, I will never forget. Fashion can be so much like a song. You remember the time, the place, and the memory it holds.
OG here. Words cannot say enough of how I’ve admired/loved your videos. Please keep rambling. I’ve learned a lot by just listening to you educate women to look your best always. I too have space holders still but always look and find some vintage pieces that bring me so much joy.
Great video! I believe in the "placeholder concept" It's a part of visualization I say. I did it when I wanted a Cartier Tank Watch. I bought a cheaper version from the African vendors on the street, and used blue nail polish to create the Sapphire of the real one. A bit later I was on a cruise, won some money in the casino and the next day in St. Thomas went with friends to the Cartier store and bought the real deal. I still love that watch.
@charlesblack1086 I love that story😊 I actually painted the bottom of a pair of boots 👢 that looked like Louboutin's😂 but I couldn't afford the one's I wanted at the time. I got sooo many compliments on them😆 but I did eventually buy myself a pair, it wasn't the boots but I still loved my shoe's & wear them often❤💯😉👍🏽
Many years ago I realized that buying cheap (in this case a bag) was costing more due to the rate I had to replace them because they were not holding up. I bought a Dooney and Burke leather shopper tote that I also got on sale. I have never regretted it. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY is not only my motto it brings me so much joy when an item I regularly use just keeps giving me joy!
@@dr-k1667 that!! I agree I actually appreciate and love it more because you know how good it’s been to you. It’s lasted and looks as good or better from the first day. It’s money well spent vs cheap thrill
NO WAY its been 5 years since you bought that Dior trench!!!😮 This revelation has me questioning my whole existence. I remember when you went live in the vintage shop. Epic find. You never miss. 😍❤️❤️❤️
Happy to hear you found clarity regarding the archetypes you want in your wardrobe, Karen. It's a great moment when you realise you can discern what feels right for you long-term because it fulfills your criteria of a timeless item (something that comes with experimenting intentionally and with age I'd say). Oxidized jewellery can be brightened with lemon and salt by the way (don't remember the exact composition, you might want to do some research). That way you might be able to save a few of your stained pieces from being chucked.
I love your mindset Karen, thats where fashion should tend to go. Your consciousness about being selective its the futur, Once again on point, love it ! Quality over quantity, buying smart, that's the real deal Queen;)
IT'S THE DIOR TRENCH!!! i honestly think it will forever be my favourite piece from your closet. you have so many amazing pieces, but that one is just such a special and amazing find!
Love this video and as I get old, I defo feel the same way about buying pieces that are if quality and timeless. They don't necessarily have to be on trend, all I need to know is that I like it and that it feeds into my own personal style.
Thank you for explaining your thoughs on this way of looking, choosing and keeping my own clothes! I've gotten all my Fall/Winter clothes out of storage and going through them now. Wow! I'm so glad to see this video. My Goal at turning 62 in 2025 is to Shop In My Own Closet! I've done the No Shop January for the past couple of years and it feels so good doing that especially being a Fashion Wardrobe Stylist. I have refrained from shopping for myself during that month. I'm looking forward to my new 2025 challage! Wish me success everyone! Grateful and Thankful! Lady Bobby❤
I think the Issey Miyaki (sp.?) bag is at least 5 or 6 years old. I got an Issey bright yellow wallet at a thrift store for $4 and a linen jacket which is like origami. Wonderful!
I ran to my closet to see if I purged my leather black bag that's an exact copy of the Balenciaga bag and there it was. I bought it in a thrift shop and used it for years but I was a little worn looking but now I might use it again, it so buttery soft and comfy. Love the ear jewelry but here in Florida it's too hot to war much except summer wear. Yesterday I wore silky thin pants and a linen top with puffed and lined sleeves, everywhere I went I was very warm on top. I can't wait for winter.
You were responsible for me buying my Ganni crocodile boots, when you bought them & the Loewe puzzle bag , I still wear them both & love them 🙏🏻🥰 ❤️🇬🇧xx

Karen, this is wonderful. I do interior design and have been telling my clients the same thing for over 2 decades, invest in quality: I never recommend a stop gap (clothing is easier to do that with, not a remodel). Everything in your home, everything you wear are pieces that you intimately interact with and therefore have a relationship with. If it will only be a relationship of convenience or merely an aquaitance that does not spark much interest then it is not worth living with (or wearing) and a waste. Always try to practice delayed gratification; wait until you can afford/aquire what is better and long lasting (and unique).
