Bruh, this was a good ass video! No intro, no plugs for products, and that marker to remember the orientation was a great tip. Keep up the good work man.
You are very welcome Jay! I am glad it helped you out. Sounds like people like vids without intro straight to the point. Cheers!
The first 21 seconds answered all my problems!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was very useful and informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Watch every second of this... Taking out then reinserting my fuel pump fuze fixed my issue. Thanks for being thorough in this vid! Fixed my rig
That's so great! Thanks for sharing your experience fixing fuel issue on your vehicle. It might blow the fuse again if it there's short in a circuit. I hope it will be that simple)
So I changed the fuel pump, and it went pretty smooth because of your video, but still the intermittent surging under load. Then I tried changing the throttle position sensor, and that seemed to be the problem this time 😎
Hi Mike! I glad it worked out) Thanks for sharing your experience. Cheers brotha!
great video - don't forget to mark the lines along with the orientation of the pump. Thank you
Good points, Tomas, Thanks for an advice!
I thought you had to remove the gas tank to get to the pump on the Xterra. Do the 1st generation (up to 2004) have direct access to the pump like this video shows? Thanks, Wayne
Hey Wayne! I know first and second generation Xterra has fuel pump access from inside but third gen doesn't have that. Thanks for your feedback!
@@PistonShack Thnaks so much! Have not yet changed out the fuel pump on my 2004 Xterra with 104,000 miles on it but know eventually it is inevitable. I know a lot more about it now thanks to your video! Thanks again. Wayne
Best DIY video I've ever seen. Quick, concise and none of the endless talking. you are my go to guy now!
Do you work on diesel engines?
Awesome! Glad to help. Thanks for the interest my my small channel. My goal to share useful information straight to the point with minimum fluff. All my work is a hobby I don't have a diesel engines around.
It started fine its great 2004 Xterra 3.3 v6 went to store came out it started then going down road it stalled on me couldnt get it to start then it finally did but soon try let go gas it shut off and wouldnt start it wanted to but nope. It cranks normal but no start any help
Do you have tachometer readings while cranking engine over?
I got a new fuel pump that had the wires reversed, it would pup gas out of the truck in a test tank but wouldnt do anything in the truck well the connector was pinned wrong and it was running backwards!
Hey Jay! Did someone re-pin pump connector before? Do you need wiring diagram for the connector?
Fuel gauge is stuck at full, would I have to replace the whole sending unit?
I would try to plug/unplug the connector first - sometimes it helps.
@@PistonShack guess I lucked out because the previous owner must have put a full tank in because gauge is working now!
Hello! I can’t for the life of me figure out how to remove the relay to bench test it. I know it was two years ago but it’s sleeting and 16°F at the moment. Any clues appreciated. I’m fairly experienced as a driveway mechanic but there is not a ton of online content for the frontiers.
Did you need to use any screw drivers to get the relay off the metal bracket or wiring connector?
Hey Zach. I use Lisle 46950 Relay Puller Pliers, they work great! You can find them online or at the local automotive store. Sometimes removing relays without damaging casing can be so frustrating. Also look if any plastic tabs or clips holding relay, Nissan likes to use them. Let me know how everything is going. Cheers!
Is this on a 06 too access panel?
i have problems with mine. Fuel pump replaced, works and pumps but it doesn’t have good pressure. If you turn the ignition on, fuel comes out the line but the car wont start. When I turned the ignition on like three times the car started better like with more power but not enough to maintain idle. Can be bad pump? Fuel regulator changed, new spark plugs, new distributor and cables. Please help!
I've got a 2000 xterra 3.3L, manual. Made it to the 310000km mark. But I believe the fuel consumption could/should be better. On a full tank, I could maybe get 350km before the fuel light turns on. Other than that the vehicle is rock solid with an exhaust leak. Does this sound like a fuel system problem?
Hey brotha! Do you have AT (all terrain), Mud tires or just Highway type ones on your rig ? Do you have lift or levelling kit installed?
@@PistonShackthere's quite a bit of replacement on it from the original owner, front and back bumpers were replaced by steel. Other than that, it's just 6ply Lt rubbers. I'm assuming the weight could have a part in the consumption. But I used to get 400kms on a full tank with all the same stuff on it.
@@rabalar480 That makes sense, aftermarket steel bumpers add more weight, reducing average fuel economy. I heard, 100lbs extra weight added reduces fuel economy by 15-20%. My Xterra is full stock with LT tires gets around 400 km on just before the light. I guess yours just about right.
Do you have any rich fuel mixture codes, or "cat" issues, bzw?
@@PistonShack only code I've ever had was p0455, it was a evap leak. Clicked the gas cap a couple extra times and cleared it. Just waiting to see if the code pops up again.
Ace Job !
Thanks Les!
what if its an extended cab is it under that back seat too
Hi Cesar! Probably not, I hope it work that way. Seems like you might need to drop fuel tank down to get to the pump. Let me know! Cheers)
does the 2005 have that door for the fuel tank?
Hello m Cave! I'm not sure. I guess so. Let me know.
No, only us lucky 1st and 1.5 gen X owners have the access panel. Second gen (2005-newer) does not. Time to drop your fuel tank. Sorry.
Hi I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra where would I be able to find the fuel tank at??? My fuel pump is bad
Fuel tank under the floor on the right under rear passenger seat.
@@PistonShack my dad got it, the fuel filter is bad so trying to find a new fitler for it now thank u for responding.
What should fuel pressure be ?
Idle - 35-37psi
Wide open throttle - 43-45 psi
Great nicely show
Thanks Marco!
What year does this work for..
1999-2004
which connector did you check voltage and which pin under the seat?
I checked a voltage supply on fuel pump connector (another connector for a fuel gauge). Read voltage between 12v pin and ground, also check you ground as well. Disconnect one of them then look on your fuel gauge if niddle dropped, that is fuel gauge connector. Now you know which is fuel pump.
Tnx.
I cant get the connector inside the tank loose its too close to get a connector release tool in there, the one was real easy
Hi Jay! I think I pulled pump and fuel strainer all together. If I understand you correctly you're trying to disconnect electric pump from the fuel strainer (screen filter).
Please, How do I differentiate/determine which relay fuse/sensor goes to the fuel pump on a 2009 Nissan Xterra
Easiest way to find the fuel pump relay and fuse is to check the vehicle owners manual. There's no sensors at the fuel supply circuit. Start with basics, check the power and ground at the fuel pump. Let me know if you have any questions.
I did all that and changed the crankshaft sencor.....checked fuses and relays all good....,.still not starting fuel pump not kicking on.....cannot figure it out
Hi Jeremiah,
Does it crank?
Do you have 5v reference voltage at the sensor?
Do you have spark?
I will check next:
-ground at the pump;
-power supply to the pump;
-continuity of the pump electric motor to the ground;
-ECU ground and power.
Let me know if I can help. Cheers Brotha!
@@PistonShack I will check all this I do have 12v. And I have spark.... Does the 2002 exterra have a fuel shut off switch
Great video, thanks for doing that. My Xterra bogs and sputters when it's under load. Pulling a trailer or up Hills, but not consistently. It's a little hit and miss. Does this sound like a fuel pump starting to go but not fully dead yet?
Hi Mike! Thanks for watching. I would test fuel pressure at wide open throttle first (up to 45 psi). Check fuel pressure regulator. Replace fuel filter if need it. Check fuel pressure again. Check wiring at the pump for corrosion on the two-pin plug, known problem on Xterra. Let me know how everything is going!
What you didnt have to drop a tank this ones easy guys and always put a new sock always and if the pumps easy to get to just test wires at pump when cranking and first seconds keys on if it gets power but no noise or loud humming probably bad and you know the relays working if power at plug you can always crack a fuel line aswell to see if there's pressure or guage the fuel rail all common sense easy
Hey Wolf. Thanks for your advice and feedback!
Ok literally used this video to change the pump tonight Feb 3 2020. Seemed to go smoothly, but the car is running rough, hesitating when applying gas pedal. Pretty sure the install is good, any ideas?
I saw a different video that mentioned disconnecting the battery can cause temporary issues.
Could it be that simple?
Maybe it wasn't the pump at all? Symptoms originally were stalling not restarting. Engine turning over good but failure to start. Then would start after sitting awhile. Any insight greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Greetings Joe! I am glad this vid became helpful.
Do you have any DTC (codes)?
1. Check if you have signal from can?crank sensors. Does your tachometer works.
2. Look for ignition issues, could to random or consistent misfiring.
3. Check for any vacuum leaks at the intake.
4. Test what fuel pressure reads at idle and wide open throttle.
Let me know how everything is going.
Cheers brotha!
@@PistonShack Codes are indicating a temperature sensor and knock sensor. Basically new fuel pump for nothing! It was giving symptoms of a bad fuel pump, though. It seems the temp sensor was telling the computer the engine was running hot via a lean condition, so it was flooding causing the engine to act as though it was starving.
Saturday is tear down day, if all goes well I can post back here with an up date. For those tackling a fuel pump it is really pretty straight forward. Cheers
Hi Joe,
Does temp gauge works? Check the sensor resistance and wiring down to the sensor. I have complete video how to test Temp sensors - 5 different test: HOW TO TEST ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. 5 TESTS. P0115 code. Check sensor and circuit first before spending money on new one. What code do you have? Does it runs rough when cold or hot?
Let me know if you have any questions I hope I can help. Cheers brotha!
Joe Shmoe did you end up finding a solution? Mine is doing exactly what you are describing. Same year as well.
@@joeshmoe7967 Started having the same issue today... I was going to change the pump, or filter... but Maybe those are not the issue.
What year is it?
2001
I can’t believe the early xterra had a trap door but the later ones didn’t that’s crazy
I didn't know that, hmm interesting! Nissan made simple fuel pump repair more expensive and complicated.
You skipped a very important and very frustrating step: when you disconnect the external wires and hoses, you can't just pull out the top lid part with the float. It has lines on the bottom of the lid which have to be disconnected and can be easily broken. It would've been nice to show us how to disconnect those fuel line clips without breaking them, as I can't find the info anywhere on the web. These connectors aren't like other connectors apparently (except for the one with the sliding insert in between the two sides of the connector).
2003 Xterra
Well, I understand what you mean. That's good point. I couldn't get my camera there to film, sorry about that. It wasn't any difficult to me to disconnect them. Next time I will try do better filming. Thanks
@@PistonShack But otherwise I found the video more helpful than anything I could find on the net. These videos are helpful for guys like me - I am comfortable with mechanical tasks and I have done fuel pump changes, just not in THIS particular vehicle.
I still broke one of the male connectors on the fuel tank sending unit and would love to know how this connector is supposed to work. Its not like the others - two have a female ring that you squeeze to push into an oval shape so that the two inside tabs expand, the third has a slip ring. This 4th one has four inside tabs. I've tried squeezing at 12 o'clock and 6 pick positions, I've tried squeezing at 3 and 9. I've tried using flathead to lift female ring outward, but it has 4 inward pointing tabs are 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock). Any advice?
I've scoured Google exhaustively, nothing out there that looks like it.
Hi, I see. Are you talking about two connectors on top of the fuel tank? One of them is for the fuel supply another one is return line. Correct? To disconnect those ones you need to get Fuel Line Petrol Clip Pipe Plier Hose Release Disconnect Removal Pliers Tool. That's the way to get them disconnected without breaking. Spray WD40 or any penetrating on connectors. It really, helps to make them slide easy. Squeeze the tabs then carefully pull fuel line connector off.
I actually have the video how to disconnected those type of connectors. Just need to get editing finished.
Yeah, let me know if you have any questions.
Oh I see now. Your video was very helpful and your advice is very much appreciated.
For any other do-it-yourselfers: do yourself a favor and buy a "fuel line disconnect tool", it basically takes two halves of a cylinder, squeezes them together so you can slide it down into the fel line connectors. And it looks like it should work on ANY brand or style of connector because it pushes the tabs outward.
Cheap and very helpful.
Thank you for a great video!
You are very welcome. Right tools are essential for the job. That's so true! Thanks for watching)
How you pull that shit out? I’m about to break this shit
You need to be careful not to brake the bracket. Remove upper part of the plastic bracket by squeezing the tabs. You probably done by this time.
This was such a fun job to do...oh wait it wasnt.
It wasn't fun for me, cold and dark end of December weather! Happy Holidays!
@@PistonShack haha, this video made it look relatively easy. Putting it all back together in place nope! Happy holidays
@@georgewkush542 You right) It took me longer to put all back together.

Sorry.. fuse I know.... sensor i need to know
What kind sensor?
Never showed this woman where to find
I have a Nissan Xterra this is a informative video I'm not going to watch it because of the ridiculous music it's unnecessary
Yeah, music is loud a bit. Thanks) I hope it helped you out.
I know the rest LOL
This is probably the least informative video I have seen on UA-cam
Thanks for watching anyway. I am glad if it helped you out. Cheers.
