Metal Detecting finds strange Silver Ring & old kids' toys searching for lost homesteads

  • While metal detecting one of our better home permissions earlier this year, the homeowner said he also owned a large 2 acre field behind his house. He heard rumors that there use to be a homestead in this field back in the 1800s and that we were more than welcome to search around. Well you don't have to tell me twice, so Doug and I hit the old fields with machines in hand and tried to find the old site. After about an hour or so we started finding things that would only be around an area like this. Here's some highlights of the hunt.

    I think you had an awesome hunt at the old field. As stated in my early American silver book, ALL SILVER from EARLY AMERICA WAS MARKED 'COIN' ONLY, NO other markings were used, unless US Silversmiths at the time tried to pass off their works as being from the UK, France or Spain to get more $$$ for their pieces. The ring you found could be from the era of mid 1700's to early 1800's. Also, I LOVE that Tootsie plane.....AMAZING!

    • @QuarterHoarder
      @QuarterHoarder  5 років тому +4

      Thanks Ken. I’ve never dug a piece with the “coin” marking before so I’m really happy to have it. At the time I never would have guessed it was even 20 years old let alone 200. That’s the beauty of the hobby though.

    The little flattened siver piece with drain holes is the bottom of a tea ball. It had a lid with a chain with a little hook to attach to the cup lip. People used them before tea bags but can probably be purchased today for loose tea.

    Nice hunt Guy's. The ring is known as coin silver. Some jewelers back in the 17 / 1800s would melt coins to make silver rings and traveling trade wagons would sell them in villages and homesteads. Very cool find Jason. Congrats on the finds! GL & HH!

    Coin silver is 90% or less. That ring may be older than 1868 when sterling was adapted as the purity standard and silver was marked as such or with 925. ( I think). Cool find.

    the perforated item bullet shaped is a tea steeper. You would but tea in it and place it inside a tea pot, discard the tea when finished and refill with new tea as needed. tea used t not come in tea bags but was loose.

    I can hardly wait until the day when I'll be physically able to get back out detecting. It's been 6 long years now waiting. BUT THANK to y'all I get to watch and remember that feeling of what the sound I just heard will produce when I dig it up.... Even the trash at one time was a treasure to the person who bought what ever was in the can or wrapper. So ever dig is really a treasure it just might not be the treasure we're looking for. even a old rusty nail was a treasure that held two boards together at one time... Yes laying here almost every day gives me a lot of time to think and focus on busy life I had before the wreck. I see how much I missed out on because I was to busy. I always looked forward the times I could slip away and go out detecting. I never got to go out like y'all get to because my time was under the demand of others just because I see now that I allow others to warp up my time... OKAY I'm rambling thanks for a fun video... Be blessed... BBE

    That's one old ring!
    Prior to the general adoption of sterling silver as the standard of purity in 1868, silver was generally obtained from the melting of coins. Since these could vary considerably in purity, from around .750 millesimal fineness to around .900, silver known as "coin silver" varies in purity. Silver at that time was sometimes marked "COIN" or "PURE COIN",
