As if he's suddenly just going to be dIfFeReNt. He also has a poor attitude, is lazy, focuses on his image and ego (which is especially uncouth when his play lacking) and at the mid point of his career, has demonstrated that he's not really willing to develop his defensive game. Basically, he is hot sh!t only when his team is doing well, his line is doing well, his ego is being fed, his mind is healthy and his body is aligned. What a nightmare. The only reason I'd take him as a GM is to flip him for picks. What am I wrong about?
Montreal has been a good place for players who used to be good to revive their careers in recent history. Took guys like Max Domi who was failing miserably in AZ, and immediately gets 72 points on Habs. Something similar could happen with laine with him scoring 30-40 goals. He has 119 points in his last 128 games played, which is still respectable and it’s considered the worst stretch of his career.
If I’m not mistaken Montreal also has 3 - 1st round, 3 second round, and 3 3rd round picks in the next two drafts(collectively) That’s great Trade bait. Maybe (hopefully), the culture change will help Laine, but man that’s an expensive adventure. He becomes the top paid player in Montreal
Risk of Laine is getting a full season out of him. He is a PPG player at his worst and if the habs can find a way to get him back on goal scoring. The deal might age well. Granted it's 2 seasons and habs are still building, so the risk is also rather small in terms of ruining the habs salary structure for the future.
Risk v. reward Risk 1) Laine doesn't pan out, Montreal is in a good cap space, and he's done in 2 seasons. and they basically traded Harris for a 2nd pick Reward 1) Laine pans out, and re-signs and fits in with this young team growing and becomes a consistent 35-40 goal scorer Reward 2) Laine pans out, Montreal flips at deadline with Salary Retention and brings in a 1st and a prospect. Montreals only real loss here is salary... but they can afford it,. and the possible upside is worth that small risk.
@@KMMHL2012 Laine did well his first few years in WPG and CBJ. A few injuries in CBJ but he played well when healthy. There's a possibility that the same happens in MTL. All due respect to Adam, but it seems like he didn't prep enough for this... If Dach is healthy, the 2C slot is completely locked in. Dvorak is at best a 3C and will likely be moved at the deadline.

The Montreal Canadiens are closer to a Stanley Cup than the Leafs. Just look at the trajectory....Leafs same top heavy team with questionable defense and goaltending. I get the feeling that this is the turning point of the Habs rebuild. All the pieces seem to be there now, all that's needed is for Reinbacher, Mailloux, Hutson, Demidov, Roy, Fowler to pan out, and this will become a S T A C K E D team! Feels like I hear a creaking noise in the distance... could it be the window that's slowly starting to open? :D
This guy right here. We were missing some scoring talent at the wing - Laine gives us a bridge until Demidov is able to join us next year. And after, Laine likely leaves in two years and we got a 2nd rounder for a D-man (Harris) that was likely going to have limited ice time this season. This move makes more sense for the Habs the more I think about it.
Only two years left on his contract. By that time they can decide what they are gonna do with him and it will by time to push for a playoff spot. Great trade for Montreal. Low risk high reward. And they got a second round pick for him nuts
The Habs get some potential high skill, but also a lot of potential drama in a young dressing room. Top marks for Wadell on this trade, getting it done without having to retain salary or use a 1st round pick as a porkchop tied around the neck of Laine's contract.
Great trade for Montreal. Low risk and high reward, more money off the books next year in Armia and Dvorak. Laine could be the perfect compliment to round out a top 6 and could work out really well with Dach if they both stay healthy.
You guys nailed the "no other center" bet, but you failed on the why, has almost none to do with the Cap Space. With center posish 1 & 2 being pretty set, it's more a case of keeping room unobstructed for Beck & Kapanen pretty soon (+ Hage a year or 2 after that, although he could be moved to the sides) for the future of lines 3 & 4.
Im kind of lukewarm on Laine, but considering he only has 2 years left on his contract... ...and that the Habs have too many young d man, it is worth a shot!
id bet that someone either in the dressing room or higher up did something that offended Laine and that Montreal will help him 100% by putting him around class acts like Suzuki and Caufield.
If Dean Evason is half the coach he was in Minny, then Jordan Harris will be well worth such a price as Laine + A 2ND ROUND PICK?! My first thought was that the cost would get Waddell fired immediately because Harris is relatively unproven in the NHL. Thinking further about it though, Laine, though having the high end, high-scoring pedigree, has almost negative value at this point, given his cap hit and his history of attitude issues on each team he's played for. I'm starting to think this is a good deal for both sides. Not that MTL needs more top-40 draft picks.
Listen, the diehard optimists in Columbus thought he could bring back a 1st if they retained 25%. The diehard pessimists out there in Hockey Land were trolling CBJ fans with “they’re gonna have to retain 50% and attach a 1st to get rid of him.” Retaining $0 and getting back a player who gives them some shelter for the rookies (Jiricek, Mateychuk) and the flexibility to ditch Provorov at the deadline is a good deal for them given the circumstances.
@@davidstefano2709 the Provorov, Gudbranson, and Severson acquisitions are still wildly confusing to me. How do they expect any young defensemen (like Bean or Boqvist in the last few seasons) to step up and grow when they keep bringing in older guys that never fit the systems they've employed? Sure, the past few coaches have been ass, aside from Torts, but you gotta blame the Jarmo camp for never getting out of the perpetual rebuild. So many weird decisions made since winning a single playoff round in franchise history, plummeting back to the bottom of the league, and drafting a bunch of top defensive prospects who can't get any playing time. Can't blame the prospect pool not panning out on the players being unable to establish themselves as full timers, when it's the organization that refuses them the opportunity to do so.
Just don't understand CBJ in this, they are in a similar situation than Montreal but are making the opposite moves against a rebuild. You should be willing to retain cap value if you are not ready to compete, Waddell could have had a better offer than this if he was willing to compromise and retain salary.
jackets can't retain any more contracts they are already at max iirc. Laine is a liability so by jackets moving him out they win and free up what 9 mil of cap space, make a few more moves and they could be heading somewhere good.
For Buff, Ott, Wings, habs all have got great young players, which teams will be better? Any can for me, they have to get great coaching, roster come together, secondary scoring, D involved in O, great goaltending, etc fun to see these great young rosters, hope all can progress.

Habs still suck balls and wont make the playoffs , terrible stupit trade for Montreal
I think Montreal will surprise a lot of people
If I’m not mistaken Montreal also has 3 - 1st round, 3 second round, and 3 3rd round picks in the next two drafts(collectively)
That’s great Trade bait.
Maybe (hopefully), the culture change will help Laine, but man that’s an expensive adventure.
He becomes the top paid player in Montreal
Contract ends next season, they can easily take that
Risk of Laine is getting a full season out of him. He is a PPG player at his worst and if the habs can find a way to get him back on goal scoring. The deal might age well. Granted it's 2 seasons and habs are still building, so the risk is also rather small in terms of ruining the habs salary structure for the future.
Risk v. reward
Risk 1) Laine doesn't pan out, Montreal is in a good cap space, and he's done in 2 seasons. and they basically traded Harris for a 2nd pick
Reward 1) Laine pans out, and re-signs and fits in with this young team growing and becomes a consistent 35-40 goal scorer
Reward 2) Laine pans out, Montreal flips at deadline with Salary Retention and brings in a 1st and a prospect.
Montreals only real loss here is salary... but they can afford it,. and the possible upside is worth that small risk.
@@KMMHL2012this person gets it. This is exactly right.
@@KMMHL2012 Laine did well his first few years in WPG and CBJ. A few injuries in CBJ but he played well when healthy.
There's a possibility that the same happens in MTL. He "pans out" at first, re-signs and then it implodes spectacularly. Not hard to imagine if the Habs are eliminated and he doesn't play well, the media and fans will chew him out.
Dach is their man going forward on the second line. Big young, talented centers do not grow on trees. Before Dach got injured he was amazing. Maybe get a third line center that's better than Dvorak?
The more i think about it the more i love* it from the montreal side
Low risk, high potential value. Helps clear space on the D Line for the young guys coming in. If it doesn't work out, only 2 years. Absolute W
If Liane gets back to his potential, this will be a huge win. It could push Montreal into the playoffs.
All due respect to Adam, but it seems like he didn't prep enough for this...
If Dach is healthy, the 2C slot is completely locked in. Dvorak is at best a 3C and will likely be moved at the deadline.
As someone that was born, raised and has called central Ohio home for my 42 years of existence, it always hurts when a Blue Jacket(or any sports athlete for that matter) want's out of the of the city(Jeff Carter, I'm booing in your general direction). However with everything I've heard about Patrik Laine, I have nothing but love and respect for him and I really hope he finds happiness and solace In Montreal(I'm really glad he was able to got the help he needed, asking can the most difficult part, so I commend you for that).
I lament Columbus did more winning with him in the lineup but his mental well being should trump my, or anyone else's fandom. I guess in short I will always root for him against the other 30 teams and I think Columbus fans are smart enough to know the difference between the Laine and Carter situations and I hope the people in Nationwide Arena will show him love and support(and not booing him mercilessly). Stay happy and healthy Patty.
The Atlantic is such a brutal division. So many good teams, all with superstars!!
The Montreal Canadiens are closer to a Stanley Cup than the Leafs.
Just look at the trajectory....Leafs same top heavy team with questionable defense and goaltending.
Other than Cowan and Knives, they have zero prospects, especially on defense.
The Habs have a HUGE young core on the rise with a management team that gets it.
Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, Dack, Newhook, Liane, Ghule Matheson, Wifi...and knocking on the door...Huston, Reinbacher, Logan M, Demidov.
2 1st rounders in 2025
3 2nd rounders in 2025
2 3rd rounders in 2025.

Delusional. MTL finished 26th in scoring. You mean closer to the bottom of the NHL.

33 or so games lost by 1 goal last season. With Laine and Dach (if healthy) in the lineup regularly, they will win more games this year. If their team ddfense improves and the PP is even slightly better, we will be fighting for a PO spot.
kent hughes loves to get huge potential players and make a project out them so they can live up to their potential or get them back to their peak.

How could they possible finish last again? They added Dach and Laine for basically nothing and are replacing Harris and probably Struble with Hutson and Mailloux. Definitely battling for wildcard spot, barring major injuries of course,
Montreal just keep making all the right moves.
You’re right, if you mean making all the right moves to get a high draft pick in 2025. This is not a playoff team next year.

Torts and rookie coaches didn't help either
@ilkkak3065 Yeah, that"s what I mean. You don't really have day to day interactions with the GM, but Jarmo kept giring "His kind of guys".
IF CLB had a history of spending money wisely, I would say this is a home run for them getting that much cap room and only losing a player who wanted out and a 2nd rd pick (plus they got a player back). HOWEVER CLB doesn't have that track record, so lord knows how this goes for them. Maybe bring back Foligno for 3x7? (Yes I'm joking) Mtl is simply putting chips on the table looking for a big pay-off, or cut bait when the contract is over...
Gets injured, father dies, team mates want him out (gossip) and gets depression or whatever personal problem. Laine has been through a lot for 26 yo. I think it's a great move with a guy who has somewhat know downside and extremely high ceiling.
Jets fan here. We dodged a bullet. How is his 8.5 justified? Let’s say I’m sceptical of his ability to perform.
Wishing Laine the best. Any habs fan excited about this risky move?
I am, last time we took a chance on a "problem player" was with Radulov and he did pretty well while he was there.
@SquiZERGgou Alot of money but if he scores, it might be worth it
Only two years left on his contract.
They still have Price’s in season ltir they can use.
Great trade for Montreal. Low risk and high reward, more money off the books next year in Armia and Dvorak. Laine could be the perfect compliment to round out a top 6 and could work out really well with Dach if they both stay healthy.
The Habs are going to surprise some clubs this year. In 4 more yrs, they will challenge for the cup!
Wow .. Stanley Cup .. keep smoking what ever it is
this isn't the basu godin notebook :(
I think Dach still has amazing potential and is only 23. I think Laine and Dach can play very well together
It’s going to be amazing this season when the league realises that Kirby Dach has arrived.
Montreal is taking the step that Adam wanted
The Adam?
Montreal got an absolute star, he could have a huge season
The important part of this deal is that Montreal got that 2nd round pick.
Primeau + 2nd rounder + Heineman for Askarov, Lets go KH!!
Not surprised that laine ended up in Montreal but zero retention is strange draft pick value is getting weird

The Canadiens are gonna have a fierce battle in the standings with the Sabres.
Kent Hughes is the guy we should have hired 25 years ago.
Jackets have been bottoming out for their whole existence
But with the habs my dads team since he was a kid iam happy fot him.
Montreal will have more points than Buffalo this year,
id bet that someone either in the dressing room or higher up did something that offended Laine and that Montreal will help him 100% by putting him around class acts like Suzuki and Caufield.
Atleast in podcast, he even reply there "This is not ok."
Ethics reviews in Canada are get out of jail card. Make the laws clear and prosecute criminals
May be ok if he can stay healthy and retain what he used to be . If he cannot , then bad deal

Win-win for Montreal.

I'm sure if contending teams had the cap space, they would be lining up to gamble on Laine. Not many teams have $8.5mil sitting around...
cole will be the casualty is Laine works out. he is getting bumped to the second line. if Laine works out, that means we are closer to the playoffs. hutson and Mailloux etc are spposed tobe better than what we had the last 2 years. so maybe a wildcard spot? that means the picks aren't going to be high picks that get you the demidovs or dachs or slafs...they will probably be 15-20ish and then you have to ask yourself if it's enough to contend ... fans always say yes but realistically....it's doubtful
