North Carolina, USA here. I’m 70 and have never ever had such destructive bug pressure in my veg patch. It started in the early spring. It’s a battle this year.
So sorry you too are having such a battle this year... it seems slugs, snails and other critters are really doing their best around the globe to fend us of growing ever again! 😬😬
Great video as always, thank you. The compost you have produced is fantastic- black gold 👍
My everything is getting eaten! Beans to squash and everything in between.I have huge populations of pill bugs in my garden. They even eat my pepper plants! He's a dapper orange boy =)
Georgie is very dapper... and getting even more comfortable around the plot. 👍 It seems it is quite a challenging year in terms of crops being eaten young. 😬
I feel your pain, 12 brussel sprouts and 12 cauliflowers, 2 rows of carrots, all my spring onions and beetroot all eaten 🐌. Ho hum re-sown everything but going to buy sprout plants. Jo Devon 🙂
I compost every now Paul and it doesn't matter if it has the odd lump or two, some gardener's buy too much.
You are the King of Composting. Terry... and King of Parnsips... and King of 'Police' Compost... and of Homemade Fertiliser... actually just King Terry I think. 👍😁👍
Love that your basil is germinating. Pigeons ate all my peas at the weekend. I was a disappointed as you sounded about your butternut squash. Cx
The basil is just growing SO, SO SLOWLY... 😬 And fortunately it is only the brassicas that our pigeons usually go after. 🤞
Hi Paul, I had to resow my squash too. A rodent got into the greenhouse and dug down to the seeds. They were about 2 ins high so I thought they'd be ok, but no! Then on my plot a mole heaved up all the parsnips and some broad beans, then my lupins I'd grown from seed were heaved up too. This morning, my metal bird peanut feeder has totally disappeared!! What with rats, slugs, snails, possibly a squirrel and moles I wonder what's coming next!!! However, I'm still smiling, but it's raining heavily today so no gardening at all. Happy days 🤣🤣
WOW!!! What a challenging time you are having!! 😬 I hope things improve for you and your growing space. 🤞
Old mans Do Dars! LOL. Bit of a bugger about your Butternuts! The same thing happened to your Cheeky Prince a couple of years ago too as I remember.
👍😉😜😉👍 Indeed those cheeky slugs and snails did make off with our Cheeky Princes! 😬
🌹🌻🍀💖
Hi Paul, you plot is looking lovely this year, such a disappointment about the onions and squash😮
Hi Paul, I absolutely feel your pain in regard to the slugs and snails! For the first year they’ve eaten all of my tomatoes, parsley, thyme, coriander , squash and pumpkins! They’ve never eaten tomatoes before!! Bloody buggers the lot of them and I’ve tried copper, eggshells, straw, sawdust, coffee grounds etc I think they are immune to all deterrents tbh
Oh NOOOOO... I wonder what it is that this year so many are having issues across continents... 😬😬 Have you tried shallow tubs of beer in the ground as yet? 🤔🤔
I have tried that yes but I end up with everyone’s slugs on the Lottie! And also the sludgy mixture that has to be discarded makes me feel quite ill!
Am going to try oats around the plants so I’ll let you know how that goes 🤞
Tried oats round the dahlia and it’s still been munched and last night they polished off my mint! I can’t believe it!!!! I’m going out with a headlamp and a pot of salt tonight!
@@Stickladylove1 interesting that they are eating your mint, and our leeks and in some cases garlic... 😬
@@paulsavident running out of ideas and veg to plant out! I wonder if Kew Gardens are struggling as well? I’m going there on Saturday
That rose looks beautiful Paul, I’ve only just got into them but I’m not sure how to prune them so I just take pot luck and seems to be working so far
A good prune in the deep cold in the UK usually does the trick, with some shaping at other times of year. 🤞
Hi Paul how many beds do you have in your plot I know you have a double plot but wow you work very hard at the plot
Yes, laugh. It's better than the alternative. Like the old saying: Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.
I've been laughing more, especially since I don't have the JAK2 mutation. That means, it's not blood cancer. So, twice now, doctors have told me I have polycythemia vera, then it turns out I don't. It's not too much iron either. At least they've figured out what it isn't.
Now I've been pawned off to more specialist. If they tell me it's cancer, I'll say, "Prove it!" Why can't doctors just say, "I don't know," and wait until they do know before they tell you something that shatters your world?
The first time, I was elated, the second, just pissed off. So screw the doctors. I'm going to live and have fun.
I'm looking at second hand class B RVs. :)

where do you get all the energy, no tomatoes?
Our toms have been growing SO slowly in the greenhouse, and in fact go out this week. 🤞
Hi Paul,
Thank you for another great week on the plot episode. I always thoroughly enjoy them ☺️
Wow! You've worked so hard. The plot is looking fantastic.😃 I'm so sorry that the slugs and snails have been eating away at your butternut squash and onions. It's such a shame after all the hard work you've put in. I really do hope you have success with the veggies that have started to germinate.
I was very interested to hear you talk about the compost bin. Thank you for explaining. How good of you to be so respectful of the little critters. I thought that was really lovely. 🤗
Fab to see Georgie making an appearance!
I'm looking forward to next week's plot episode, Paul. Wishing you and Richard a really super week.🤗🌸
I think we need to balance how we grow with nature... some times swaying more to our own needs and harvests, though mainly trying to keep a decent balance overall. 👍😊👍
That's a really great way to look at it all and by looking after the crops you are not causing a huge amount of harm to nature. As you say, it's all about keeping a balance and this is how nature works itself. ☺️
Hope you have a good rest of the week on the plot, Paul 🤗
