when you install the new fire think about a cleanout inside the house for the sweep - sounds messy but with your long winters you will need to clean that chimney over the winter period and you don't really want to get on the roof unless you build a ladder on the roof specifically for that job so it is safe - chimney will be on the Northern side of the house so no sun all winter
Heat tapes usually have a thermostat at one end, when covering the tape with insulation it's important to cover that thermostat too. If the tape is insulated and the thermostat is exposed to cold air, the insulated part can overheat.
I think what we are all gaining right now...is wisdom. Things are crazy, and maybe problems we CAN fix, are so much better than the things we can't fix. As I mentioned in a previous video you need to put a small shed over the water pipe. Then insulate it and run a small heater in there. We spent a winter in Cleveland and survived -28 F. Also buy yourself a contractors torpedo heater. When things do freeze they are the best for thawing frozen pipes.
A small insulated shed with a heater and light fixture with a couple 100 watt incandescent bulbs. The bulbs might provide enough heat to not have to run the heater all the time once the shed has warmed up.

@Jack HoffmanThis is true for standard RV's and travel trailers, I've owned a couple. I don't know for sure but it would seem that when they converted Terry to a solar system they may have bypassed the original electrical setup. They said in the video they had power from the grid (they could use an extention cord to run space heaters) but still needed to charge their batteries to turn on the inverter. In any event, something about their set up must be different because they had power all along.

They are working dogs and its said its abusive to not provide activity to stimulate them. They are not fast Couch potatoes like say a Greyhound. The healer does fit in van and trailer homes where Greyhound couldn't turn around in camper so camper was sold.
I grew up in a house that had issues with water pipes freezing when it got very cold outside. During those times, we would open one or two taps inside to a slow drip to keep the water moving. Moving water is less likely to freeze. We didn't have to do it but if the drip becomes an annoying sound inside Terry, tie a string to the tap so the water can run down the string.
You must remember to open BOTH hot & cold taps to drip. I once forgot the hot side. 🥴 Took days for it to thaw. You need to do it for each tap, bathtub/shower included.

Being a country boy you should know to just stack straw around your hydrant. Fill up your trailer tank as needed then shut off the hydrant. You guys Rock love how you handle problems.
That's what I was thinking. I thought maybe there was sensitive solar stuff attached causing that route to be incompatible. So I over thought it, good to know since I might do solar someday.
You guys are amazing. Trent gets upset but always finds a way. Allie you keep on smiling and finding the bright side of everything. You keep Trent going. Good job to both of you. So glad your back missed you.
Frozen pipes are always a mystery, living in Idaho I have had my pipes freeze more than once in the winter, and it is not fun getting them thawed out. So when they do it is luck and divine intervention for sure, lots of praying that they thaw out as well. I am so excited every time you do more construction inside. it is just so much fun to see the walls go up and things moving along. I am looking forward to your next video, sending love and hugs, bye for now.
Just when I said where is Frank, there he was all bundled up. He was feeling your stress. So glad things are looking up now. BTW how is Trent's finger?
I was also wondering where you had put Frank. Good to see things getting back on track. Leave the deck now it is safe from snowfall from the roof and work indoors. Wood stove first. Good luck. Incidentally, the tree and decorations should come down on 6th January. Bad luck otherwise. You don’t need any more of that. Lastly, the snow shovel is orange.
I would try making a shelter around the water hydrant using hay bales in addition to the heat tape. That would about 16-18” of insulation from the cold.
A lot of good advice given from people that had their hard knocks in life. Where your living, have a back-up, then have another back-up behind that. Just ask the old timers living around you and take advice as golden !
Trent you are so lucky you are talented that you are to be able to fix all the things that have gone wrong. You a mechanic, a construction person an electrician I say way to go Trent!
This reminded me of a night when I was about 14, I was alone in my house because my father was in the hospital (having heart surgery, no biggie) and it started to pour down rain and the ceiling started leaking so our dining room was flooded and then our tree fell down and the neighbours wouldn't help, but then my brother and my sisters came back with their spouses and we all worked through the night to fix things and I just remember being so exhausted but I slept like a baby that night because we managed to fix everything and because God helped us when no one else did. So I guess what I'm trying to say is things could get much worse but everything will be alright if we just trust in God.
What great neighbors! With neighbors like that you might as well be out in the middle of nowhere with no one around. Bet you would have been over there helping if the shoe had been on the other foot.
Watching this video and other ones from northern USA makes me soooo thankful I live in Texas. We had a cold front last night and our high today was 55. We very seldom have a daytime high below freezing maybe once or twice a winter and I hate it.
Growing up in snow country, I see others have suggested building a little box around your water hydrant. Wrap your hose and you let your water drip in your sink to keep the water running and not standing still.
You've got enough scrap material. Build a 24"x24" box to cover the hydrant. Having a dead air space with the heat tape will help keep it from freezing. If you can line it with some of the pink insulation board, even better.
HVAC sizing depends on the load of the house. You need to have finished air tightening the structure and have a blower door test done to measure how air tight the house is. That starts the basis of the calculations for heating load. Then it's a ton of work measuring and inputting all the wall measurements, window specifications for each wall. With only one space, past that sizing isn't too terrible. You're much better off talking with an engineering firm to size the system vs a HVAC installer. The standard manuals installers use over size the systems on purpose and aren't as effective for modern air tight homes, the new manual for HVAC only came out this year and most don't know to use it yet. On electric highly recommend mikeholt's youtube series on all the changes in the 2020 code.
Good thing is they can put hvac off for a while. They have a basement so floor vents would be easy. Just by looking at it I would say a 5 ton at least.
With the extreme temps there you might consider two systems, one big one for downstairs, a smaller for upstairs, which you may only use in the summer. More control.
@@dalekronk496 5 ton?! Maybe in 1990. That's far too big for that small of a house. But the wood stove will be a big air leak so without testing who knows
I was thinking the same thing. I have repurposed an old swimming dock and shipping pallets for temporary outdoor steps until it warms up enough to make real ones (for the shed and little used side door, not for the front door)
Yeah but Trent is so resourceful and Allie is good at researching ideas. Hopefully they come across some stuff for free they can recycle into temporary step platforms, just until the snow melts and ground thaws. Maybe another free couch, wardrobe, kitchen cabinets, something someone else ripped out or threw away. You can use shipping pallets for a lot of things. Then burn when done (make sure it's not treated lumber though)
Like I suggested before using 1 sheet of 1 inch pink panther foam board made into a tall box tape together with aluminum tape with a 1 inch gap around the pipe will keep the pipe warm while still venting excess heat out the top you can also still put the duct pipe around it.

Why not just stay in Pamela until the pipes and electricity recover?
@@amywalker7515 Pamela was left at the Grandparents house.
Save yourselves a bit of headache. Build a quick little shed over the water outlet and hose with some plywood and cheapie foam insulation.
That was my thought I'm sure there are some scraps of wood it would at least maintain a warmer temperature and would be cheap.
I second this idea. We did this on the farm back in the day and hung a light bulb inside for some heat. It was *always* warm inside.

You truly are very enjoyable and I admire you both. Highest Blessings
Does anyone else keep rewinding Trent&Allie because you just don't want it to end? I am like wait, I think I missed a word. Let me go back 10 minutes and rewatch that.😎❤
No lol. One and done!
Yep! I didn't understand "half wall" till he said it later, even tho I watched that twice.
when you install the new fire think about a cleanout inside the house for the sweep - sounds messy but with your long winters you will need to clean that chimney over the winter period and you don't really want to get on the roof unless you build a ladder on the roof specifically for that job so it is safe - chimney will be on the Northern side of the house so no sun all winter
Notice how you get...kind of down, when things don't work...yet you get super STOKED, when you figure it out. Now, everybody go listen to "Roll With the Changes" and rock out, because you can. Huge hug from Germany, everybody.
I like watching you guys. It is nice to see that a man and a women can live and work together the way it was meant to be. And live ,travel and build a home from making you tube videos, is just a super bonus .
A trick we do in the north is leave the water trickle. A steady stream !
Can you do that in a trailer with only a limited gallon tank? Wouldn't it have overflowed before they returned? hmmm open valve? hmmm
Marylou T they are on well water right !!
you may want to research getting a low voltage cut off set so your battery does not discharge below 11.5 v this will protect your batteries and allow you to start the charging straight away.
battery discharge controller
After all that "nightmare", you are sitting on your deck, enjoying the warm sunshine and expressing gratitude for what you've accomplished. I think a lot of people need to watch you and understand that life is a journey and all nightmares comes to an end... love e
I think it's so cool that someday your kids will be able to look at these videos of young Mom & Dad actually building their house.
Excellent!
Go with minI split heat pump units. No duct work, Great efficiency. I have been putting them in for years. If your going to have a fire place I would recommend putting in an HRV as well. More then will to help you with any questions you have. Keep up the good work!
My husband suggests building a small box around it with 2" foam insulated.
Fun seeing Allie use her favorite ORANGE shovel again today 😉
Yes it’s ORANGE!!
Yellow!! 😂😋
Orange😂
I am very glad you got that bedroom wall up, no more worrying about someone falling from up there.
I admire your work ethic, Trent. Such a natural analyst and problem solver.
My son always says I, I'm, we are in a pickle! Gave me chuckle to hear our hero Trent say he was in a pickle! Love Frank's love for the two of you
I'm glad you explained why you guys were wearing mask! I was thinking these two are in the middle of no where!
Denny Giacobe yeah wierd as hell
As I mentioned in a previous video you need to put a small shed over the water pipe. Then insulate it and run a small heater in there. We spent a winter in Cleveland and survived -28 F. Also buy yourself a contractors torpedo heater. When things do freeze they are the best for thawing frozen pipes.
@@tinydancer7426 true, but you can run a propane heater. Same for the torpedo heater
We heat our 100'x30' greenhouse with a torpedo heater.
I'd just stop by the neighbour's & see what they got going on lol!
Could also run a generator inside and use generated power to keep the batteries topped off. Two birds one stone.
A small insulated shed with a heater and light fixture with a couple 100 watt incandescent bulbs. The bulbs might provide enough heat to not have to run the heater all the time once the shed has warmed up.
We're only given what we can handle & holy moly can the two of you handle a lot😳. Love your resiliency, it's probably one of the most important characteristics needed to get through this life. 💖💞
Allie, I hope your parents are doing well in DC with all that is going on. We have family there as well and are praying all are safe.
Your ability to roll with the punches, with hardly any sleep is AMAZING! Sending love to you both. Keep supporting each other. Butter cookies and a sense of humor goes a long way up there in the mountains! 💗
Take the extra pink Styrofoam and build a box you can slide over your yard hydrant to keep the heat tape warm and working. We do this in northern Maine. Never failed us.
You should get emergency back up generator for your place.
all fine, except most trailers use a lot of 12 volt end devices (lights as an example) which have to run through the inverter,
@@larryfreeman7979 all RV have switch panel/breaker panel. The one that Trent and Allie Terry RV is set up for 30 Amp plug. You should look in to getting RV so you can see how RV works.
It is the Yin and Yang of life. If we did have hard times we wouldn't appreciate the good. I love your positive attitudes.
Trent and Allie,
Have been watching you all
since Mexico days ...
You are a blessing !
Keep on shining !

You are Two Awesome Positive People! RV winter camping isn’t for wimps! Blessings Always to You!
Look around you and take in all you have accomplished so far. You’ve got this. You keep going forward and working out all the challenges and at the same time you allow all of us to be part of the journey. Thanks for another great video and congratulations on starting interior walls. It really defines the stairs and loft.
Stay warm.
When problems magically fix themselves just call it "divine intervention!" 😁
😂🙏🏼
Yes Thank the Good Lord Jesus.... the healer of everything !!!!!
@@trishkosky7966 Yes indeed! :)
seems more like divining intervention to me.
The first thing I would’ve said was “THANK YOU LORD”. So happy everything turned out good.

Trent you approach an obstacle like an opportunity to learn and better oneself. You both are great to watch. Love to Frank!
Welcome home! For future reference when you plan to go away for more than a day or two, have a friend check your place a couple of times for security, electrical and plumbing problems. I'm glad Trent got the situation under control and you're back to the build.
That shovel is orange as orange can be, Trent you must be joshing with us?? Lol! 🤣😂 love your videos, thank you for sharing with us! 🤗🤗💛💚
I have been a home owner over 40 years, also I grew up on a farm. All of these problems are previous experiences for me.
You guys are making me want a blue healer. Frank is just adorable.

Took days for it to thaw.
You need to do it for each tap, bathtub/shower included.
@@dudleydeplorable5307 No doubt, not the first time you've heard this comment but your handle is one of the best I have seen. Keep warm and stay wonderfully deplorable Dudley.
Watching this video while wearing my comfy cozy ‘I’m just here for Frank” sweatshirt. 🥰
Welcome home, right?! Glad you "fixed" everything and got it up and running. The house is really coming along guys! Looking good! And you have such positives attitudes about it all, good and bad. You're a pleasure to watch!
Can't believe Trent did so much on the first day back. Honestly after the nightmare the night before I'm surprised you guys didn't just snuggle frank in the trailer all day.
I can’t wait for 6 am in California every Monday and Friday. I love your videos and your attitudes with challenges. The house is looking great.
Trent, your amazing! You do so remind me of Mcguire! And breaking out singing "Blinded by the light" made my heart smile. I'm a seventys girl so you've made my evening very special.
Love your never quit attitude!
The best way to conquer bad news is staying optimistic and you two have Master it well.
Looking good now. Getting me through another lockdown in the UK
YAY! It is Frank day❤️ And Trent and Allie day🙂
Best part of my morning is with u all . Glad u all keep moving forward . It might be a yr before ur done but it’s going to be great
I was just telling myself, "after the video, I'm going to ask in the comments why are you wearing your mask when you guys are alone?" And then, you answered my question👌🤗. I live your attitudes, always very positive. Good job guys
i believe i would of put a 1/2 inch spacer against the open side of the stairs to to the stair wall to facilitate placement of the sheetrock. much easier. great job tho so far.
You guys are just too cute, you're going to look back on these times as the best times of your life, enjoy. I am retired plumber, heating and air, but you're right you do need somebody that practices in your area for proper code knowledge. The load capacity is going to be an interesting equation on a house with not only high vaulted ceilings, but also a loft, and a basement.
I will be more than happy to help you with the equations if you would like, feel free to DM me. Glad you guys had a wonderful Christmas,
Many blessings.
Jimmy
I totally get Trent’s “Problem solving helps me grow” as that has been my attitude to problems. Anything in extremes is not good, so grateful that problems to be solved are minor most days, lol
Yeah... that was the best line and insight of the day, for sure.
Growing from adversity is what the human journey is all about. Life without tests & trials is a stagnant place of self pity.
Remember, if it was easy where your building, you would be in a cul de sac with neighbors 40 feet on either side! It will happen, stay positive!!!!
Love you guys! Life is full of challenges and you two are doing great handling one thing at a time after another, all while keeping a positive frame of mind. No one could ask for more. Hugs to you both and of course, 🐕🦺 Frank too! 🤗🤗🤗
All the learning and all of your experiences create memories forever.🌷🙏
*Im glad y’all are back to work and working on the house. There a lot to do but you guys are doing a greAt good all is well and going to turn out amazing*
It’s so awesome to have you back!! Minor teething issues always occur when you have just gotten home from a trip! It seems to be just how it is!! You guys are really starting to fire up again! It won’t be long before you have the outside done and dusted and you can work inside all the time. Great that you are back! Thanks for the video. May 2021 be a year filled with all the great things that life can offer you both! Best wishes.
You guys are just lovable. Can't wait to see the finish home. Will be watching for sure guys. Pet Frank for me. So cute.
I usually need a few days off after returning from vacation. I sleep one day because usually, the places I travel to or different time zone! Thank God for blessing your electric and plumbing to work! It's too cold and dark in the mountains! 💜🦋
Being a country boy you should know to just stack straw around your hydrant. Fill up your trailer tank as needed then shut off the hydrant. You guys Rock love how you handle problems.
If it was my house, I'd go with ductless wall mounted units, you'd only need two of them and it would also be your AC as well, they are very efficient
That sounds great infro.
I’m getting this the first part of February, I’m really looking forward to them.
I have had that in my small cabin for 5 years and it has worked well. If it is really hot I use a fan in addition.
Jumper cables from the truck to the battery my husband said that would’ve solved everything!
That's what I was thinking. I thought maybe there was sensitive solar stuff attached causing that route to be incompatible. So I over thought it, good to know since I might do solar someday.
I wondered the same thing.
“We’re staying positive..........I quit! “. Front and back of the next t-shirt!!!

Went through that for ten days in Eastern Washington. Generac whole home diesel Generator. This will happen again.
I would try making a shelter around the water hydrant using hay bales in addition to the heat tape. That would about 16-18” of insulation from the cold.
And a nice bonfire if you forget the heat tape on too long...😜
A lot of good advice given from people that had their hard knocks in life. Where your living, have a back-up, then have another back-up behind that. Just ask the old timers living around you and take advice as golden !
Trent you are so lucky you are talented that you are to be able to fix all the things that have gone wrong. You a mechanic, a construction person an electrician I say way to go Trent!
How about building a little “house” around the pump?
Happy New Year! Thank you for being you!... Enjoy every minute of this build, you are making memories for life!
Get a" master plumber" for your hvac. They are the masters on HVAC.
You guys are Awesome. Thanks for being there. When the loneliness hits, you guys take it away. Luv you guys.
Great to have you home but to have the problems is no fun. There is a saying - when it rains it pours. Stay safe and warm.
Walk in Peace.
Good morning. Have only watched the first 10 seconds so far and already looks great. Have a great day everyone!!
Amen,😁😍have2trust God....in everything esp.these last&evil days.
For the algorithm... Because I have enjoyed another installment.
Love your channel! ☺️
If you can line it with some of the pink insulation board, even better.
...and bury the hose going into the trailer so it is never exposed.
@@JimfromIndy if they don't go 3/4 ft deep it will freeze anyway i guess
@@Mr_B. Every foot they go down delays the freeze process and eliminates the wind.
@@petunialuna4801 the mr cool multizone mini split diy systems are what i would probably reccomend
Steven7650 do you mean Mike Holmes?
In stead of working on the deck I would build the stairs. So I didn’t have to keep climbing a ladder. Can’t wait to see everything done.
I was thinking the same thing. I have repurposed an old swimming dock and shipping pallets for temporary outdoor steps until it warms up enough to make real ones (for the shed and little used side door, not for the front door)
Can't do the permanente one because they have to a do concrete pad or footings and the ground is frozen right now.
Yep
Yeah but Trent is so resourceful and Allie is good at researching ideas. Hopefully they come across some stuff for free they can recycle into temporary step platforms, just until the snow melts and ground thaws. Maybe another free couch, wardrobe, kitchen cabinets, something someone else ripped out or threw away. You can use shipping pallets for a lot of things. Then burn when done (make sure it's not treated lumber though)
Hang in there. You two can fix whatever comes your way.I love watching your progress and adventures. You are truly living life.Take care
Like I suggested before using 1 sheet of 1 inch pink panther foam board made into a tall box tape together with aluminum tape with a 1 inch gap around the pipe will keep the pipe warm while still venting excess heat out the top you can also still put the duct pipe around it.
