Because Dubas signed Tavares they can't afford Marner anymore without gutting their defense. The Nylander situation was ugly, the Marleau trade was really bad, and now for the main course of Toronto's never ending troubles, all stemming from Dubas' immense greed and stupidity.
A lot of people in the comments do not understand hockey. They should look at larger context of game and not isolated high light reels in order to realize how good Tavares is as a hockey player.
So many of these plays you see guys on the other team just standing there less than 3 feet away doing diddly squat to cover him... it's all over great players goals, guys just hanging out around them, who apparently forgot hockey 101
I don't understand why Tavares played 2020 and 2021 on the second pairing after getting 47 goals with Marner getting over 90 points and Reilly getting points also. Matthews should be on second line until Tavares tapers off. They won't win if Matthews is always preferred by the coaches.
Never discredit the goal scorer’s ability to get himself open, ready to shoot, and for the good finish. Mitch can make all the plays he wants, if its idk we’ll just say Matt Hendricks he’s passing to, Hendricks is not getting 47.
He's worth that money, but only for the right team. Nylander's entire season was derailed as a result of the Tavares signing, they didn't have the money to make him a serious offer and he sat out all of training camp, the pre-season, and almost the first half of the regular season. That happened, the Marleau trade happened, the Marner situation is probably going to happen. It's turning into a never ending string of disasters. Tavares is costing the Maple Leafs a lot more than 11 million a year.
Nylander was signed to his market value, even if it was the tail end of it. They can afford to give Marner 10+ when they invoke Horton’s LTIR and send some guys down. He thing is, Marner isn’t worth 10+, especially on short term. He maxes out at 10 long term.

He fights so hard, you can tell hes from a blue collar family with his work ethic and determination. Hes doesnt have an amazing shot but he knows when to shoot quick. He also has amazing eye to hand coordination, that one play where hes knocked down and from his knees knocks the puck out of mid air to go and score a goal. Amazing player with impressive play
@@thricefan89 I mean he doesn't do too many flashy plays on his goals, he just takes shots. That's obviously not a bad thing or anything, just saying. His decision to leave the Islanders was a pretty good one especially when looking at his season stats. He has a better core around him and more youngsters to help him out.

For a guy who scored at this level his whole career with a garbage team, this is an incredibly stupid comment. @@joer8854 Other than him standing in front of the net for tips his play isn't "excellent". He's slow and his defensive game isn't great.
