He was in a remake of 12 angry men from, I think, the mid 90s where he played the main guy (Fondas role in the og) and it wasn't bad. Not as good as the og but not bad. George C. Scott reprises the same role he played in the original. I think Tony Danza was in it too. But yes, Glenngarry Glen Ross was a fantastic movie.
Jack Lemmon was one of my favorite actors, I have a nice story about Jack I use to work at Paramount studio, Jack was doing “Dad” and I saw him walking to his trailer I said h, introduced myself and told him I was a fan of his work and how nice it was to meet him, then I asked him if it was possible to get an autographed photo of him, he thanked me and said yes.. just give me a minute and went in his trailer came out with “I thought I had a photo for you, but it appears I ran out, I tell you what if your here tomorrow come to my trailer and I’ll have one for you” I came the next day and the man had an 8x10 personally singed in an envelope waiting to give me…class act and I still have it 🙏🏾 🎭
I met him in 1976 at the Bing Crosby Open. I was with friends from the defense language school in Monterey, walking around and watching all the celebrities play golf. At the end of the day, I wanted to get an autograph from Jack Lemmon. Even though he had just played 18 holes of golf, he stayed for an hour afterward signing autographs for everyone who wanted one. This is after every other celebrity had left. Now that’s a classy guy. I could tell he was tired, yet he was so kind and down to earth. I never forgot that.
My favorite Jack Lemmon movie was The Odd Couple and Mister Roberts. He was great in so many movies that you can't write a history of film during the last half of the century without him.
Same here. Mr. Roberts.. earliest film i can remember.. Saw it as a child. The Odd Couple.. " Thats not spaghetti.. its linguine"...... " Now its GARBAGE!"
"The Days of Wine and Roses" imo was his greatest performance! Of course, he was excellent in all of the parts he played but that one drama required him to give more of himself to make that film so realistic and so moving. Although the styles have changed that story remains the same. Still relevant today. Bravo Mr. Lemmon!!! ❤

You are spot on to me him going through the DTs, and the whole story of alcoholism was probably one of the truest most believable performances I have ever seen Jack Lemmon, highly underrated Lee Remick, that movie change my life. I watched it as a young child. My life ended up being like that little girls my dad got sober, my mom stayed in alcoholic and never came back

LOVED this retrospective. I have a little Jack Lemmon story of my own. When I turned 18, my dad took me to the Gingerman, a restaurant in Beverly Hills owned by Carroll O’Connor - Jack Lemmon was there. My dad had secretly asked the staff to sing happy birthday to me and when they did, Jack Lemmon did too. I’ve told that story a LOT as you can imagine. It was such a great evening. His Professor Fate in the very funny movie The Great Race steals every scene he is in. Lemon's "evil villain" is a perfect counter to Tony Curtis' squeaky clean hero The Great Leslie.
This was a great short bio on Jack Lemmon. He has always been one of my favorites. Though like so many highly successful actors, the poor man had a sad childhood. I have no doubt that it contributed to his alcoholism. But managed to only have two marriages in his lifetime. He died way too young. Jack Lemmon will always be remembered as a very talented, versatile actor on stage and screen.
one of my favourite jack Lemmon films is a 1960s comedy in full colour called " How To Murder Your Wife" His character is a very successful and wealthy NYC comic strip cartoonist, a bachelor and playboy type, his comic strip character is Brash Brannigan, clearly a reference to the James Bond strip that appeared in newspapers and Brash Brannigan is like that. Lemmon acts out scenes for his comic strip for real with some hired extras and his butler played by Terry Thomas follows them around taking photos of the scenarios they play out, and then he makes his comic strip drawings based on the photos. I just remember seeing this film as a kid and it actually got me obsessed with drawing my own comic strips and I ended up going to art school and following that career!! Anyway , the film is great and extremely entertaining, possibly one that doesn't get mentioned so much when talking about Jack Lemmon's films, but I'd recommend it, Terry Thomas almost steals the show as his very English butler/valet, I have it on a DVD, I never tire of watching it.
I grew up in the '50s and '60s, black & white TV & Movies, old -school Hollywood and its trends/traditions, etc. While I confess to have seen Jack in only comedies I can't deny the impression he's made on me as a versatile actor/artist. WIMI IMO he was never miscast and he deserved every accolade he ever garnered. Disclaimer: I know what I like. 🙂
One of my absolute favorites. Brilliant in comedy (Some like it hot. The Gteat Race,) drama (The Apartment, Days of Wine and Rose's, Missing). One and on. RIP
How could you not mention one of the greatest movies, in which Jack Lemon was perfect?? The Apartment remains one of my all time favorite movies, and Jack Lemon , one of my favorite actors!!!
Jack Lemmon was always one of my favorite actors. All of his movies are great, and he has such a flair for both comedy and drama. I remember watching The Days of Wine and Roses with my mom when i was just a kid. Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men are my favorite movies. Hysterically funny....Walter and Jack were absolutely perfect for those roles.
We can not forget the greatest comedy of all staring Jack Lemmon Grumpy Old Men my favorite . I’ve watched both thro the years . What a great actor rip
He was a prince of a guy, as anyone who knew him will tell you. He did have a huge success with Walter Matthau in The Odd Couple, which was so funny that you had to read the play afterwards to get all the lines, because the audience drowned them out laughing.
I loved Lemmon's Academy Award winning performance in "The Days of Wine and Roses." It spoke of the horrors of alcoholism years before it would be openly spoken about, taking tremendous courage. Please watch it, it's RIVETING.
You forgot his stellar performance and multiple awards and nominations for his portrayal of Sheldon "Shelley the Machine" Levene in "Glengarry Glen Ross".... this was the best acting I had ever seen him do...(it inspired the character "Gill "on The Simpsons).
@@youtubeillegallydeletesacc1525 He was so convincing as that worn out salesman that couldn't keep up. I thought he was fantastic also in "Irma la Douce" and "How to Murder Your Wife."

Lemon was an outstanding actor. In Some Like it Hot he was brilliant! But in Wine and Roses, he was even better, if that's at all possible. Loved him in the Out of Towners. He was indeed a great actor. May he rest in peace.
@nge400. You’re confusing “The Out-Of Townes” with “The Prisoner Of Second Avenue .” Both movies were about funny and madcap things that happen to a husband and wife in New York City. The only real difference between the two movies (other than the different types of comical situations) is, in one movie they live in the city, in the other they are tourists. By the way, the guy that Lemmon accidentally mugged in “The Prisoner of Second Avenue “ was an unknown actor at the time named Sylvester Stallone.
This video was spectacular!! I had no idea of these points about Jack Lemmon. He was one of my Favorite Actors!! Some Like It Hot and The Apartment are two of my favorite movies.!! BRAVO Ving Rhames!! I had no idea that you had what you did at that Academy Awards Event!! Loved you in the movie Dave along side of Kevin Kline as well as all the Mission Impossible movies you did with Tom Cruise!!! What a Great Human Gesture!! My Hat’s Off To You My Friend!!🙏🏻🙏🏻👼😎😎👼🙏🏻🙏🏻
His trajectory as an actor parallels some musicians I admire. That is, they're 'old Lions' that are able to adapt new and/or current norms and still shine.
I liked Jack Lemmon, i found him to be a funny guy, and he seemed to be good to his old mum & dad, even though they were not so easy parents to have' 'RIP Jack' 💕🙏
Great episode, very insightful. Lemmon did extremely well despite having to deal with what looks like a problem with alcoholism. It must have terrified him, knowing what his mother went through and that he had the same affliction. Just goes to show that even people with great comedic talent can struggle with their own inner demons, like Robin Williams. RIP, Jack.
I just love his first movie, which no one seems to know about - 1954's IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU. He and Judy Holiday had marvelous chemistry and he showed both his acting and his comedy chops. A wonderful little movie directed by George Cukor.
When I was about 6 years old I saw him in a movie for the first time. He became one of my childhood favorite actors. I still watch him in rerun and streaming movies. My mom thought It was amazing that a kid would like old “adult” movies. Along with him, was the entire Rat Pack, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Sidney Poitier, Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire, Clint Eastwood, Terence Hill, Bud Spencer, and Anthony Perkins. I still watch the old great movies.
I absolutely love Jack Lemmon. One of my favorites is the classic The Out of Towners. Also, Glen Garry, Glen Ross. Oh yea, Bell, Book and Candle. In his work, I think you see him regardless of the character he is portraying.
Jack Lemmon was a great actor, both in comedic and dramatic roles. I grew up with him having great success in movies during the 1960's. R.I.P. Jack Lennon. I really miss your presence in movies. ❤
First movie I remember seeing him in was The China Syndrome when I was a kid. I was so amazed at his performance and loved him ever since. Especially Mr Roberts
When I was in middle school, the class was assigned to write a critique of our favorite movie. I wrote mine about "The China Syndrome."" I was so moved by the highly political story about corruption that my paper was read aloud in class by the teacher, and thankfully, she kept the author anonymous because I was the school tomboy. I was so obsessed with the subject matter and Lemmon's performance that even the teacher felt it as she started by saying, "This was written by a 13-year-old student..." and continued. I was not known for my academic prowess, but rather for getting into fights with boys and being mistaken for one by strangers. Lemmon was even more amazing in Glengary Glen Ross in 1992. Nobody could play insecure, vulnerable, and unstable like him. His passing was, for me, a tragedy.
There are actors, mostly of the Golden Era of the late 50's through mid 70's that no matter the story line, this certain actor would carry the show. Jack Lemon was one of those. I put him in the same class as Sidney Poiter, Charlton Heston, and several more.
The Apartment, The Odd Couple, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Fortune Cookie...what an amazing artist. Being a child of an alcoholic, Days Of Wine And Roses really hit home...so brilliantly acted by Jack and Lee. BTW, Lee Remick was so stunningly beautiful she made my knees weak 🙂
One if an ensemble cast for “Glengarry Glenross”. One of my favourites. Also “Missing” set in Chile at the time of el Golpe. But his body of work speaks for itself
Ive known and seen many, many men in life who are walking talking Jack Lemmons. Theyre frenetic, busy, talkative, argumentative, but also charming and funny but overall usually pathetic. I love jack lemmons multitude of characters. Hes a man who visibly struggles with his own issues and he invokes a deep response in me which nobody else can do. That vhildhood background story is new to me but whoa. I remember him from Missing, and Glengarry Glen Ross. Love Jack Lemmon. Oh yeah, and Save the Tiger...!
In the DVD commentary for Days of Wine and Roses, Blake Edwards commented that the great irony of the film is that it was made by a bunch of drunks, himself included.

one of my favourite jack Lemmon films is a 1960s comedy in full colour called " How To Murder Your Wife" His character is a very successful and wealthy NYC comic strip cartoonist, a bachelor and playboy type, his comic strip character is Brash Brannigan, clearly a reference to the James Bond strip that appeared in newspapers and Brash Brannigan is like that.
"Push the button, Stanley. No-one will ever know." 😂😂😂
Italian actress Virna Lisi played his wife.

Appreciate How respectful you always are
'Out of Towners', a classic film! 😃
With Sandy Dennis.. a classic for sure.!
“The Prisoner of Second Avenue “ (1975) is a funny one with Jack and Anne Bancroft.
I adored him in Grumpy Old Men!! That was my favorite Lemmon/Mathauw movie of all time.
I love Jack in the hilarious "Good Neighbor Sam".
U should have mentioned the odd couple....1 of his greatest films.
🌟👍🌟
Oh yeah, another classic. He and Matthau had something special. He also could take a movie and make it special even if it wasn't so great.
His sniveling "nose wheeze," as Felix Unger...brilliantly funny! 😂
He was the perfect every man’s actor…everyone could identify with his character and enjoy his talent. My husband, kids and myself loved him.❤❤❤
I never knew that about Ving Rhimes, bravo!! Well done!!
One of my absolute favorites. Brilliant in comedy (Some like it hot. The Gteat Race,) drama (The Apartment, Days of Wine and Rose's, Missing).
One and on. RIP
It seems that the videos posted with this narrator, who is excellent, are the best. Always thoroughly researched and compelling!
👍👍
How could you not mention one of the greatest movies, in which Jack Lemon was perfect?? The Apartment remains one of my all time favorite movies, and Jack Lemon , one of my favorite actors!!!
Jack Lemmon was always one of my favorite actors. All of his movies are great, and he has such a flair for both comedy and drama. I remember watching The Days of Wine and Roses with my mom when i was just a kid. Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men are my favorite movies. Hysterically funny....Walter and Jack were absolutely perfect for those roles.
We forgot to mention The Apartment... another great film he did..😮
This channel usually misses or misleads a lot. Yet I’m still watching it just to catch the mistakes.🤣
Jack Lemmon was my favourite actor in my youth and an all time great. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched "The Apartment".
We can not forget the greatest comedy of all staring Jack Lemmon Grumpy Old Men my favorite . I’ve watched both thro the years . What a great actor rip
one of the true talented greats, hope he was a nice guy, not many in pervywood... what a gesture giving Jack the globe. that's class!
Some Like it Hot and The Apartment. Two of the best movies ever made!
He was a prince of a guy, as anyone who knew him will tell you. He did have a huge success with Walter Matthau in The Odd Couple, which was so funny that you had to read the play afterwards to get all the lines, because the audience drowned them out laughing.
RIP 🙏 Jack you are loved ❤and missed
RIP
I loved Lemmon's Academy Award winning performance in "The Days of Wine and Roses." It spoke of the horrors of alcoholism years before it would be openly spoken about, taking tremendous courage. Please watch it, it's RIVETING.
The Odd Couple!!!!! He was really great in everything, but my will always be, Mr. Roberts!
You forgot his stellar performance and multiple awards and nominations for his portrayal of Sheldon "Shelley the Machine" Levene in "Glengarry Glen Ross".... this was the best acting I had ever seen him do...(it inspired the character "Gill "on The Simpsons).
He deserved an Oscar for Glengary!
@@marknewton6984 or at least the second prize "set of steak knives."
He was the best thing about "Glengarry." I genuinely felt sorry, not sorry, and then sorry again for him in that movie. 😂
A great cast in Glengarry but Lemmon was the Best!@@youtubeillegallydeletesacc1525
@@youtubeillegallydeletesacc1525 He was so convincing as that worn out salesman that couldn't keep up. I thought he was fantastic also in "Irma la Douce" and "How to Murder Your Wife."
I adored Jack Lemmon as a child and now....one of those few actors that can do both comedy and drama, just an amazing actor....Loved Some Like it Hot...Days of Wine and Roses....so many great performances this man gave....was so sad when he died...Rest In Peace dear Jack ~~
Lemon was an outstanding actor. In Some Like it Hot he was brilliant! But in Wine and Roses, he was even better, if that's at all possible. Loved him in the Out of Towners. He was indeed a great actor. May he rest in peace.
One of my favorite actors.
His best film is, hands down, "The Out of Towners."
I Dis-sgree , Ever Hear of Good Neibor Sam his best movie ?
SO MANY great movies with
Jack Lemmon❤️
The bit with his wallet is comedy gold!
Great film.
RIP, Jack.
Lemmon struggled with alcoholism & Robin Williams struggled with alcoholism & cocaine addiction but remained sober from what I've read.
He had a movie about that, and fell into the booze trap anyway.
Not really.
The apartment is easily one of my favorite films. Jack Lemmon is spot on -- he was one of the few actors Billy Wilder trusted to improvise.
How did you leave out the Grumpy Old Men movies? I have to admit I was really surprised that was omitted
I loved Lemons work..
Brilliant Artist, and he truly gave every ounce of himself , in every part he played...
❤
I just love his first movie, which no one seems to know about - 1954's IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU. He and Judy Holiday had marvelous chemistry and he showed both his acting and his comedy chops. A wonderful little movie directed by George Cukor.
What a lil sweety, when he was just a little buck!
He went on to bring to the screen, such magnificent acting rolls!
One of a kind!
I never knew about John Ford's involvement with "Mr. Roberts". Thanks
😢I teared up, that was so beautiful, the legends🙌🏽. Thank you for such a beautiful tribute. 🙏🏾❤🌹💐
Bell, book and candle 🕯️
Yes 🎉
Oh my gosh, yes!!
Oh yes!!! Loved his role!! Great memory! Thanks for mentioning it.
Save The Tiger.

Oh yeah! 👍
Jack Lemmon was a great actor, both in comedic and dramatic roles. I grew up with him having great success in movies during the 1960's. R.I.P. Jack Lennon. I really miss your presence in movies. ❤
Glenn Gary, Glen Ross always the one that comes to mind. Great film Jack!!
Thank God you didn’t reveal him as a perv. He is my all time favorite. I would have been crushed
One of the all-time great American Hollywood actors!
Grumpy old men movies were awesome, Strange, no mention of comedies with Matthau and ,Sophia Loren + Ann Margret ….
This was a fantastic watch,I have always loved watching Jack. His life was success and sadness rolled into one. Thanks for posting 👌
I like to separate the actors from their private lives. He is one of my favorite actors
That's what I say about Tom Cruise.. His personal life is his own. Has nothing to do with his work.
@@kennethrussell1158Great actor Tom Cruise. Strange lifestyle...
Loved this but would have loved to see The Odd Couple mentioned. My favorite
Such a.GREAT actor, Jack Lemmon !!!!!!!!!!!
There are actors, mostly of the Golden Era of the late 50's through mid 70's that no matter the story line, this certain actor would carry the show. Jack Lemon was one of those. I put him in the same class as Sidney Poiter, Charlton Heston, and several more.
Gregory Peck and William Holden in that category too.
April Fools with Catherine Deneuve was great.
As the comment below, The Apartment was a great film - he was a fantastic actor, He had the ability to create such nuance into his roles.
With all the bad video biographies on UA-cam, this is REALLY well done. I really enjoyed this very much. WELL DONE!!
He was an actor not a comedian...HE said it himself
He wasn't even a good actor
@@helensneddon3246 'John Wayne', Sly Stallone, B Reynolds, H Ford, J Nicholson, N Cage, S Elliot, C Norris, J-C VanDamme, J Goldblum, and a host of others have made careers out of literally playing themselves. How high are our expectations of what was good entertainment in the days of black & white? Disclaimer: grew up in the '50s & '60s when Dad worked at (ran) the TV station from '58 - '65. The station went color in '62 & our house got color in '66. (finally lol).
Exactly
@@johncmitchell4941 I don't know if Marion Michael Morrison played himself, but Archibal Leach tried hard to be Cary Grant.
He was great in some like it hot...both were, but Lemmon looked good😊
Jack Lemmon was one of my favorite actors. I still go back and watch "Mr. Roberts", "The Odd Couple", and the "Grumpy Old Men" series over and over. His less know films, "Tribute" and "Mass Appeal" are also among my favorites.
What a fantastic talent, I loved him in THE OUT of TOWNERS.
Love that movie !
He was one of my all time favorite actors, right up their with my ultimate favorite Jimmy Stewart. You seem to find a way to bring a fresh look at personalities that have been done by others before. I am subscribing for this reason.
Great video. My earliest memory of Jack L. was in "Some Like It Hot." He was GREAT.
That was also the movie that found this 11 year old boy MADLY in LOVE with Marilyn Monroe. I don't remember HOW MANY TIMES I watched that film, just to see that natural beauty, M.M.
But... I was also very CREEPED OUT by Tony Curtis as Josephine. He was too... Uh... Pretty. Yuck. That just grossed me out. Haha lol
Anyway, thanks for the memories.
