I still love the Andrews Sisters version, but then it's the Andrews Sisters.
I remember Fats Waller And His Rhythm's version of this, recorded about two weeks earlier. (19 Jan 1939). Dr Demento played it.

Just what the world needed -- another treatment of this dopey thing! Interestingly, this was the very song that got the original octet Pied Pipers, signed for a ten-week radio show trial with the band, fired: Raleigh-Kool's English sponsor, who happened to be in NYC, heard the group jiving up this silly number, went apoplectic in the studio and ordered them sacked. (As we know, the harmonising aces, pared down to a quartet, would be back with TD). Undeterred, TD evidently believed frog-voiced reedman Skeets singing this paean to "shrimpers and rice" would fare better in a commercially released version. Hmmmm ...

@@Trombonology Ha! The height of musical idiocy for me, is "Mairzy Doats", and to make that more painful,the version by the Merry Macs,a group that I can't stomach.
