Yeah, when my grandmother was 69, she started walking 10 miles a day. Very healthy. Now she is 89, and we have no fucking idea where she is. Oh fart jokes, not dad jokes.
What abrilliant video. Just what I have been looking for. My reef tank has been set up just over five months and it is only now that I seem to be seeing an improvement.
I could have used this video years ago when I got into the hobby, all this stuff really freaked me out as a beginner but over time you start to understand it's just nature taking its course. Great info for anyone actually in the hobby but only in the beginning phases.
I found this video quite helpful. The best thing to me was how you walked us through different stages of the tank with viable examples. You also removed a lot of fear of getting this or that. Thanks!
It’s really hard as a new reefer not to freak out about the brown stuff appearing all over your beautiful new tank, but for the most part it’s best not to intervene with chemicals and media reactors and UV sterilisers etc. I just run carbon, add copepods, and wait it out. If I STILL have an ugly tank in a few months, then I’ll begin investigating other solutions. The gross looking algae/slime is the building block on which all other parts of the ecosystem you’re creating rely. It’s normal, so just be as patient as you can be.
Great vid and advice for a newbie to Saltwater keeping, although I had one in the 90's underfloor filtration strip tube lights etc etc Triggerfish Ich bad advice, but wasn't successful gave up. Started keeping Koi 2 years ago which brought me back to the yearning of saltwater in the living room. So these AIO Nano Tanks are a god send.
I really appreciate your video I’ve been in the hobby a long time and setting up a tanks always a mystery but you kind of sums it up for me and I really do appreciate it cause I’m going through one right now and it really is helping knowing the stages of what i’m facing and not be afraid of it so again I do thank you you did a great job
My tanks are starting to mature nicely. Still a little bit of hair algae but we're on the way. Here's some little things to look out for in your own tank!
I have a 5 year old 125 gallon FOWLR with snails and conches. I used to have coraline then it crashed about a year ago. I noticed my calcium and phosphorus levels are elevated. All my other water conditions are good. No fish loses from disease ever. Also, I started to get kind of a green algae that sticks to my sand...very hard to get off the sand. Thoughts?
If you focus on your water quality and know how to act then you may often skip the ugly stages. And if you don't have a DSB you should always stir your sand IMO to restrain build ups that usually leads to old tank syndrome.
He lives in a pineapple under the sea... 😂 These are a lot of my favourite things! love the little Sponges, Copepods, Gammarus/Amphipods, Micro Brittle Stars and stuff that hides in the rockword 👌
I found amphipods in middle of cycling my tank. Now, I’m having algae and diatom. I also had tiny bryopsis growing on my rock so I removed it. During cycling, I’ve seen a bristle worms, asterinas, snails and sponges.
In the midle if cycling, I found neomeris sp that I confused for bryopsis because it looked like foliage. I gound snails, asterinas, bristleworms, spaghetti worms, snails, copepods and amphipods. After I added my 2 clowns, I’ve found a macro algae rizome that I think is cheato.
Your videos have been some of the best I've seen on you tube far to many of the bigger channels over complicate things and make me feel like I have too spend more and more money, your stuff is super helpful thanks pal.
GREAT VIDEO my marine tanks have not grown hair algae instead my base rock has brown lith lime green and pink colors. What stage is mine at? Both tanks been running about 3 months.
Water changes are basically to keep nitrates in check. When you start a tank you want to cycle and build up the biological system at the start. So the fish waste becomes ammonia, which then becomes nitrite and then to nitrate. Nitrates build up over time and you want to change the water to bring that down. After awhile your biological load can handle the waste and even keep it in check where you won't need to change the water but once every 6 months or even longer.
Do the little critters appear on their own (if so, how?) or did you add them. I’m about 1 month into my first marine tank. Sand, dry rock, filter and heater installed. I have been seeding with live bacteria.
when cleaning my second tank i found HUGE sponges under all my live rock "out of control" = my spiral worms lol i dont mind the look of them & i feed every day or every other day (target feed)
Im sorry, but I disagree with most of what you're saying. Yes algae is important, but if you put in just a tiny bit more effort you can VERY easily keep a reef aquarium without all that algae looking bad. There's nothing wrong with your tanks they're unique and different from a lot of other people and I really appreciate that! But I do think it is very easy to have reef tanks that look a bit 'cleaner', even without supplements or dosing schemes. Even without a skimmer 😎
And another thing, sorry. Water changes are 100% unnecessary if you keep your parameters OK with supplements. So much cheaper, so much more time efficient!! Look into DSR method. It's great. Also having a dosing pump dosing a carbon/glucose source on your tanks with a lot of fish would make a day and night difference regarding water quality. With that carbon/glucose your basically feeding the bacteria directly and therefore greatly increasing their capabilities! Just some tips. Look into DSR your whole view of reefkeeping/ the necessity of water changes will change :)
In 5 years, I have done one or two 20 gallon water changes in a 125 gallon tank just because I wanted to use some of the water for a quarantine tank. Just do top offs. My water quality is great although my calcium and phosphorus are a little elevated due to too much food. I think the idea that frequent water changes are necessary if a myth if you have the right balance of fish and filtration (biological, mechanical).
This video could not be more stupid or wrong. Man’s is just pointing out the biodiversity in his tank and saying “when this starts APEARING then your tank is mature”…… 90% of the species he lists will not simply “apear” on their own, they need to be intruded either intentionally or as a hitchhiker on something that was inntentionally introduced. If the species isn’t placed into your tank from an outside source it’s not like it is going to apear out of thin air. I hope that this guy isnt trying to imply that all these species are independently evolving in every single new fish tank during its early stages. The mere presence of these species does not mean that your tank has matured, it simply means they hitchhiked on a fish or coral that you added. When you see these species start to thrive and take over your tank is the sign of maturity.
This is accurate, I’d also be cautious in your approach of “just leave it alone” as there is strong link between tank quality and maintenance frequency. Leaving it alone may be great for creating an ecosystem but is it an ecosystem of animals you want. I prefer fish and corals not worms, algae and so on.
Many, many thanks. This is the first and only video I have seen that describes this phase of a sea water aquarium in a very understandable manner. Again many, many thanks, is highly appreciated.
This is honestly the best video on UA-cam to watch if starting an aquarium. Very thorough.
6. It stops telling fart jokes
🤔
Yeah, when my grandmother was 69, she started walking 10 miles a day. Very healthy. Now she is 89, and we have no fucking idea where she is. Oh fart jokes, not dad jokes.
7. It finally moves out of your house!

I like that you really let us know by visual signs what to look for this is so helpful
I found this video quite helpful. The best thing to me was how you walked us through different stages of the tank with viable examples. You also removed a lot of fear of getting this or that. Thanks!
Beautiful tank, your copepods are huge
Great video! My 1000 gallon tank with 500 gallon filter is just now starting to show signs of maturity. subscribed
after how long?
By far the best mature stages in reef hobbies find this really helpful thank you for taking your time . ❤

Throw some copepods clear or prevent that whole thing from happenning
There are tons of videos on water quality and cycling. However, very few on actual aging of tanks. Thank you for this video!
Great vid and advice for a newbie to Saltwater keeping, although I had one in the 90's underfloor filtration strip tube lights etc etc Triggerfish Ich bad advice, but wasn't successful gave up.

I love the Lamarcks angel.
Me too
I’m a firm believer that you can have a healthy tank without it looking like crap but this is definitely a method and it’s not a wrong method
Thank you for making this video. I'm starting up my very first saltwater tank tomorrow and all your info alleviated a lots of anxieties for me.
this is a great video to learn about taking your time with the reef hobby. thanks!
Awesome video. I recently spotted a bunch of pineapple sponges and it made me happy!
I just got some pineapple sponges to my tank and run to youtube to look what was that. Thanks for the info!!
Great video man.
My tanks are starting to mature nicely. Still a little bit of hair algae but we're on the way. Here's some little things to look out for in your own tank!
very good thanks
Always enjoy your videos.
Thank you Carl
I have found these pineapple sponges pooping up a month ago its good to know my tank is happy.
Great video thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching
been a year since I started my 14 gallon nano tank and I'm FINALLY developing coraline algae on the rockwork!!!!!!!
Excellent video, thanks! 😎
Thanks for watching
This is such an educational video, verry well explained 👏
I have a 5 year old 125 gallon FOWLR with snails and conches. I used to have coraline then it crashed about a year ago. I noticed my calcium and phosphorus levels are elevated. All my other water conditions are good. No fish loses from disease ever. Also, I started to get kind of a green algae that sticks to my sand...very hard to get off the sand. Thoughts?
Thanks for the video. That makes total sense!
Another great video

Great video good info ❤
Cool facts!!
Thanks
Absolutely brilliant video for a beginner I loved it. Would you add pods tho
If you wanted to Jumpstart the population before adding fish then yes
Excellent information.
Thanks for the tips! What is the yellow wrasse looking fish in your system? Coris Wrasse” It looks like he has some white along the bottom.
Silver belly wrasse
Spot on !!
Thanks for the great info! What are the fish in your salt water system that look like fresh water mollies at 3:32 ?
Saltwater mollies 😂
Mr Everyday my reef tank does NOT have a bike , is racing our mountain optimal?
I had a plaque of pineapple sponge in my sump they have reduced rapidly is this good or not, great video by the way 😁
He lives in a pineapple under the sea... 😂

where do these come from when start from a fresh tank with dry rock . i only have the white shell dusters after year and half .
Hey bro which rock you used?
Nice info, especially because I have all the signs that you highlighted! Thank you buddy 🫡
Glad it was helpful!
Sick tattoos!
Your videos have been some of the best I've seen on you tube far to many of the bigger channels over complicate things and make me feel like I have too spend more and more money, your stuff is super helpful thanks pal.
I have hair algae and a start in macro algae. What does macro algae mean? Is my tank maruring? My tank is around 5 or 6 months old.
I do all the same, but no water changes... run a refugium though.
Nice video 😁🤘
GREAT VIDEO my marine tanks have not grown hair algae instead my base rock has brown lith lime green and pink colors. What stage is mine at? Both tanks been running about 3 months.
Nearing mature, sounds like coraline algae
@thisworldwillendhow old is my aquarium?
DO U HAVE FRESH WATER FISH WITH CORAL ??? 4:03
@06:30 so.... Sponge Bob Square Pants...is a sponge... 😂
Where do all the Critters come from?
From live rock or corals
There were thousands hiding indise the fladd magenetic scrubber in my tank
What is the purpose of all those water changes ??
Water changes are basically to keep nitrates in check. When you start a tank you want to cycle and build up the biological system at the start. So the fish waste becomes ammonia, which then becomes nitrite and then to nitrate. Nitrates build up over time and you want to change the water to bring that down. If I have no contact with the ocean, will those worms and sponge and what-not have appeared on their own?
Once you add a few items from a fish shop such as corals etc they Will however just adding dry rock, water and sand they will not for obvious reasons
Do you consider cyano a "normal/expected" part of early maturing tank?
Anything can happen
Cyano isn’t a good thing
Dang I just started my tank from scratch except for the rocks welp. It desperately needed a deep cleaning anyways
Do the little critters appear on their own (if so, how?) or did you add them.
I’m about 1 month into my first marine tank. Sand, dry rock, filter and heater installed. I have been seeding with live bacteria.
Yes they will..but I used doctor Tim's
One and only
I intentionally introduced the copepods after 2 weeks and they're already seeming to colonize.
Only deep sand beds can make a fresh or marine aquarium permanently stable. Father Fish channel explains it perfectly.
when cleaning my second tank
i found HUGE sponges under all my live rock
"out of control" = my spiral worms lol
i dont mind the look of them & i feed every day or every other day (target feed)
i found the worms too 😂
the pods are a bit harder to find as the fish munch on them
im running 2x of the "hardest" tanks
5 gal picoreefs with macro algea
some corals i guess but only hitchkikers
for coraline i have reds whites purples blues 🥺 saltwater aquariums are beautiful
i recommend gracilaria
looks amazing and clears the water quality

You really don't need this much algae in a tank for it to be healthy that's what I'm trying to say. Still love the vids so don't get me wrong. ;)

Do you have any social media I could ask a few questions on? I’m brand new to reef tanks and have had my tank set up around a week now

Anyone with cardinal fish tattoos is a serious fish keeper. I have a pint of Guinness tattoo, wonder what that means?
You're Irish?
@@EverydayAquarist Like most Americans I'm just a mutt. But I do love Guinness!
Why your rock looks different thn coral
I have 8 pine apple sponge’s on the side of my hammer
Have you ever had limpets
2:14 i think u meant Amphipods
@@EverydayAquarist G. pulex is a FRESHWATER amphipod (also, NOT a shrimp)
I did
Mine is very immature 🤣
bro i thought harry potter voiced over this man xD
can i use red lava rock in marine tank
If you want
@@EverydayAquarist 🙂, I want, but my local fish shops says NO. i just wanted to clear my confusion
No
Red lava might lower your pH. It does in freshwater.

yea am not going to listen to you. with tanks looking like that.
Water quality will control your algae problems too. You talk about tank maturity although your tanks look horrible
So kind 👍
