I feel like No Straight Roads can be best summarized as what's known as a "AA Game"; a type of video game that has more polish and production value than your standard Indie, but is still a fair deal rougher and not as large-scale as a AAA game from one of the bigger and well known industry giants.
Since you mentioned EVE having an interesting color pallette, I wanna also point out something I don't think a lot of people notice. (SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T PLAYED YET!) Notice that the "Pelt" on Eves back is not just a weird adding, but is the same color scheme as Zuke. Leaves that are green, and dread-like extensions that are blue. It's actually pretty symbolic of the fact that Eve has never really moved on from Zuke despite him running away. She feels like they didn't break up but he just up and left, which might be why she's still willing to take them back. She doesn't see what happenes between them as an end, merely a hiccup. Her representing herself as a chair being tossed aside is even symbolic of how she felt used and thrown out. Really a chair is meant to be sat on and nothing more, pure object. The fact that the second to last boss is literally using herself as a medium to represent the downfall of a relationship by making herself a literal chair should tell people that no matter what, art is art and can be forged from anywhere. This game gets a lil deep if you look a bit more into it lol.

As a Malaysian, I'm so proud when I played this game at a Comic Con last year when it first premiere. It is amazing! Edit: Their voice acting isn't bad. That's how most Malaysians talk in English. It's our accent. I talk exactly like Mayday.

Fun fact: when you’re in a level or a Bossfight. While holding down the transformation button, you can hear your character’s instrument go with the song. It’s amazing and blew my mind when I discovered it. Dunno if it works for every stage yet, still trying to beat DK part 2
I don't mind how this isn't a strict rhythm game, since I get the approach they were going with. While some things do seem underdeveloped to me, I'll say that the soundtrack is tremendous, and the story is at least satisfying. I hope Metronomik keeps making games in the future. If they focus their skills more, they could have a sleeper hit on their hands.
Update bout the switch port: bought the game just recently on the switch as well. I saw that they actually fixed the bugs with the graphics, they look a little bit more cleaner and of high quality.
preordered the switch version for 60sgd, the bugs may be a bummer and the graphics are a bit down graded but overall the art direction and everything else is exactly as advertised also fan of the ost especially james landino and nikkie simons who did a song on cytus and now for sayu so yeah pretty happy with it hehe
This game is so charming! The simple plot and the goofiness is all part of the charm too. every time i finish a boss battle then mayday and zuke fires a beam, it feels so shonen anime! especially at the end where everyone was combining their power to shoot the comet. that being said, holy shit why does the textures looks so bad for the switch LMAO
The glitch that used to annoy me was a random glitch in 2 player mode in Yinu's world where 2nd player's directions would flip. But even with that, loved it.

As a Malaysian, we have our own way of speaking English that might sound "weird" or "off" to others. That is because we mix in a lot of other race's languages, slangs and accents into it since Malaysia is a multicultural/multiracial country. It's the same for Singapore, that's why they've coined a term for it: Singlish.
A couple of glitches I noticed were Zuke's character portrait staying on screen during my first attempt at the second DK West fight Zuke's footstep sound continuing to play in the cutscene after Eve's boss fight. Tatiana staggered when the key wasn't finished (I had to restart the boss) The health bar of the boss not rendering properly creating a white bar
If only the creators who made YIIK would take notes that games aren't art instead of complaining that people didn't understand his game only to ruin more of their reputation. P.S. This is a joke but No Straight Roads it's no masterpiece.

I had always thought of games as a medium for storytelling. The storyline will draw my attention, but the music and the setting's environment is what gets me hooked. Games may not be art to some, but to me it's an art in of itself. With the time, energy, and effort put into something that is meant to catch your attention and immerse yourself into the world of the creator's making is a work of art.
24:20 the problem of that part, I think that is the graphics that you are talking about. Like, go see the configurations and check how is the graphics, if it's in low or high, because the lower one is for pcs or any other advices who don't support the game well, but try playing in a higher quality and tell me what you think about! :) (I truly recommend playing at medium graphics)
to be honest the only thing that annoyed me about this game was not being able to rotate the camera during fights...(ive only played till sayu yet and it was really annoying to do the platforming part because i couldn't properly see where i was going and where the platforms ended/started and i couldn't see what enemies were behind me either so the battle became kinda hectic for me)
About the voice acting, I think its the slight Malaysian accent that really throws it off. I as a Malaysian myself didn't really notice it at first but as the games goes on the accent becomes more and more, Malayglish slang, or idk it just me.
The argument of games not being art comes from the fact so many people work on it, thus it isn't the pure vision of an artist, and without an artist, there can be no art. according to that logic: music isn't art movies are not art paintings are not art animation is not art cooking is not art books are not art art is not art Art is rarely ever done by a single person alone without influence. I’m a bit of a Skill Up fan, I like his reviews at least. (I view them with high regard, as high as IGN or Easy Allies, just btws.) but I know he’s got to be wrong about NSR; I preordered this game last year, and I loved it, ESPECIALLY THE soundtrack! Probably because I got the physical, which is probably more updated.- Edit: I was totally wrong, recently I was having the same graphical issues you had with the game. Turns out, the Switch version of the game is an older build.
15:50 When you brought up your DJ world bug, I definitely believe it as it happened to me with 1010, I have it as an unlisted video on my profile bc I wanted to show my friends because after transitioning into the third face (broken factory/heads), I fell out of the world and just flew around, hell after swapping characters a few times the camera became angled. Thank god it was that phase of 1010 so i wasn't in danger and once I got into the final phase it fixed me and I finished that battle with an A rank (I was doing like crazy difficulty I believe)
You use 1010's graphics as an example on how bad the visual quality gets on certain platforms, but watching eve's is the pie messiah scene in the midnight gospel.
Oh hey! I got this game because of you and I got it on the switch myself. It seems to be a lot more stable now than it was when you played it. The only problem I've seen are very split second lag spikes in the streets however I also haven't played very far in yet so it may still have problems.
Nevermind I take it back! While I only had what I like to call texture fuzz on Yinu's boss fight I have just finished the main campaign and experience about 20 or so bugs which I saved as a 30 sec video on the switch. Whenever it loads a new area, especually in a cutscene, many objects will not be there and then just sporadically appear, especually at the end when the camera changes to different places during the monolog. Its a lot worse with draw distance, in the Yinu part of vinal city the bricks in some places disappear when I am about 5ft away from them. That and I just finished playing DJ Supernova in Parry Mode and found out that if you keep double jumping while holding forward during the 2D section Mayday will walk way up in the sky and along with that I somehow glitched Mayday to be invincible during that fight which I think I caused by trying to hit the planets in the 2D section thinking that I could parry them because, well, parry mode, and the DJ wasn't giving me a whole lot of opportunities. The glitches seemed to get worse and worse as I started playing so Im not sure if its one of "those" games where after a couple hours of playing it starts having problems.
Also handheld mode is abysmal. It lags excruciatingly baddly selecting stuff in the sewers even though its resolution is so bad it had the same screen door effect as the VR Labo Kit. Hopefully they fix these issues, however since there was an update out of the box when I got it a few days ago I doubt they are going to keep updating it, given its a small indie game where a whole nother company is involved with performances on ports.
I would forever love this game, I literally just heard about it a few weeks ago and I'm already obsessed. I admit that there's a lot of glitches and bugs during the boss fights and during some cut scenes where some are very noticeable. But I really do enjoy this game! I just hope they patch the game if they want to put it on steam.
Literally anything can be art. If an artist can earn hundreds of thousands of dollars by duct-taping a banana on a wall and earn even more after eating it, anything can be art.
I think it just matters who is hearing it and how they interpret it, while anything can be considered art it is also important to remember that art is also subjective and what is art is on a person to person basis, now on Tatiana I think she does her role well and brings the character to life, but that's just me
Her voice is also raspy yet eloquent, as if she is keeping things formal yet has shown her age throughout the years. It's.. kind of a foreshadowing on why her voice is a little raspy.
I think the "bad" voice acting you are refering to is the accents that sometimes slip. I thought Mayday sounded off until I realized they game was from Malaysia. After that, everytime I hear something most would consider odd, I immediately recognize as their accent. DK West literally speaks in Malay while rapping in english, Zuke and Mayday speaks in Malay when they get angry, And my theory on why Yinu sounds like that is because she is literally 9 years old. She probably just emulated her mother's accent or maybe she hasn't really developed much in (conversational) english. (I say conversational since she knows Music terms and habits such as "fingers curved" when she is sort of panicking during her fight) There are issues with actual voice acting but I don't classify most as inheritly bad. Then again, I grew up watching a lot of Upin and Ipin, and Boboboi so its not as off as it should really sound for me.
I don’t really have an issue with any of the accents but I can’t stand Yinu’s voice. The delivery is all over the place and none of her lines make sense when she says them. Otherwise, characters like Mayday or Yinu’s mom don’t bug me because they can say their lines normally .

Also with their militaristic managers or companies they are under in what to do and what not to do ( Neon J. giving orders and 1010 doing just that) to please their fans. Plus the fact that boybands or particularly Kpop boybands are replaceable as shown with the flying factory immediately making a new member off the bat.
Music, writing, pictures, and animation are all considered art. Why would the combination not be considered an artform? Video games should be considered an artform to me. Actually now that I think about it Martial arts and Dancing are considered artforms, should streaming game play also be considered art?
Hmm... I say to the last question: it can... It's the same thing as me going to a gallery and film myself doing it. I wouldn't consider it art though, even if there's art on display (not saying that games themselves are not art, but streaming is not necesserily art on itself)

I remember following this guy on Twitter who overall was a pretty level headed guy but would often say games aren't art. I found out he says this because them being called art has given rise to walking simulators and games journalists essentially. Kinda floored me with how dumb that was. He also agreed with someone that said games aren't art because they are a craft. Like you can't have a beautifully crafted blade that can be considered art, because blacksmithing is a craft. Or a perfectly made dish, because cooking may be a craft but the term culinary arts exists for a reason. Overall people who say such things have both a very ridged but also poorly defined idea of what art is. Makes no sense to me.

Also, an additional note on the culinary arts is that if you watch any cooking competition, one of the largest things judges consider when judging the dish is presentation, something that absolutely wouldn't matter if it wasn't capable of being an art.
Fortunately metronomink said they're releasing patches for the game, like they did a few days ago for the ps4 version of the game, so i'm sure in a few weeks/months the game will be mostly bug-free

The way he interacts with Eve, DK West, and Mayday in very different ways that exemplify how he feels about each of them and how Zuke’s VA performs his dialogue as the straight man that can lose his cool around certain people is what gives him his personality.

Traditional art is art, digital art is art, writing is art, animation is art, music is art, movies are art and voice acting is art. All I can say is games are a combination of all those art forms pretty much. They're no art, but rather they're on their tier above art itself. It allows players to form as many conclusions that the player wishes, because there's that much to look, listen, experience and digest as opposed to simple paintings, pngs, music and movies. Games are not art, they're beyond art in a way that normal art cannot compete!
Honestly, the first time i've heard Tatiana speak, I thought "Hot damn this voice acting is so interesting, I love it", like the second you hear her speak you know everything about her personnality, and if that's not great voice acting I don't know what is
I felt that the voice acting was surprisingly strong in this game. Hearing the accents only served to make me like it more, because it wasn't something I was used to.
People are so used to playing realstic games that they forgot that games used to be like this, fun and trippy/ introspective with great music all in one. Examples: brutal legends, jet set radio, pysconauts and blinx the time cat.
Onrush, Burnout Revenge, Hot Wheels Beat That, Metal Slug, MGR, stuff that wasnt too deep, but just incredibly fun. But sadly, in this day and age...if the masses dont keep it alive, the game dies. Expectations are impossible to maintain anymore. We deserve another crash, to force companies to understand something: games arent a business. They're to be fun. First, and only. A fun game, that's going to sell in this day and age. Not an mtx loaded mmorgpowgfpsttrpg bullshit. Make a simple game. Make it so you get to the fun as fast as possible. That's...what you need to do, to make money. Babylon fall is a perfect example of why this live service shit needs to end. And why I'd be more than happy seeing dlc packs return in full force.

I think the "flawed" voice acting came from a lot of the cast being Malaysian. I notice a lot of other English voice acting done by Malaysians (mainly in tv shows and animation) sounds more or less similar.
Trust me, this game is full of jank, so I believe you when you say you fell out of the world. My friend and I are playing coop, and during the Sayu fight he triggered one of the grindrails, dragging me into the cutscene trigger, since both people are needed in 2 player mode. The cutscene triggered and once it concluded we were stuck falling into the void.
It happened to my brother and I too once. One of the developpers explained in a video that both players have to activate the same grindrail in order to avoid this. They're currently working on the bug fixes.
Omg same me and my brother were just fucking dumbfounded seeing the whole map rising upwards and see our avatars just disappear, only for zuke to come back up on the cam having a seizure still falling downwards.

spoilers for the ending: ---- ---- --- --- --- --- --- I do think they could've shown Tatiana's redemption a bit more, where in the game it largely happens offscreen. But It's certainly a better redemption than some other media I've seen, and what we got still works, I just think it could've been better. Also, I REALLY wish they had a proper boss battle against Kliff in the ending, like having him somehow use fanpower against you with you fighting alongside the NSR artists against him or something. would certainly help in showing what happened to him after tatiana seemingly rocked him out of existence.
I agree. It would've made the ending more worth playing through had there been more than just "beat up his robos a bit". Even if it were a short boss, it would've been at least SOMEthing. I watched a speedrun of this game and the ending section really kills the momentum of the run since there's nothing to look forward to
On the one hand, I kind of like the slower paced ending since it gives some time to reflect on things before the final cutscene. On the other, yeah that section was boring and I was expecting more from it when I spoiled myself on how the story ended. Would have loved to have the NSR artists get more on screen development. But, you know. Indie game that's already ridiculously impressive that I've otherwise had a lot of fun with, so I give it a pass there.
If i could rate the ending: Gameplay: wished could there have been more. But overrall? I think the reason why it was slowpaced its because it means for us to reflect in our journey. Would be better if Kliff had somekind of relevance in the Tatiana fight. But the ending of the story was really good and satisfiying, weird, kinda because games are notirius of good endings for the gameplay and not for the story Story:
I thought the voice acting was fine, Yinu just has more of an accent cause she's a child and children have enough problems with one language. The only criticism I had of the game were that personally the bosses seemed to start out too easy. At the very end everything is flowing and you can feel the rhythm (especially in the Yinu fight) but it's be better if it got there earlier in the phases and pushed beyond that in the final phases.
Did Skill Up really research NSR, or any game before playing, let alone reviewing? It's not marketed as rhythm game, of course it's not what he expected as he said himself. Also considering the time gap between his upload date and release date of the game, had a feeling he just rushed the game for the sake of review only. Sure the game lasts only about 5 hours on one playthrough but that may also explains him uploading his review on the SAME DAY as release date (or at least within 24 hours due to time zone difference).
I actually really loved the voice acting in this game, especially the malaysian accents. Honestly I think a lot of people just aren't used to hearing non-eurocentric accents and thus deem it 'bad', I thought they gave the game a feeling of authenticity.
(Massive spolers for this game!) I really appreciate the twist that Tatania was Kur Frya and that her bias against rock was because she couldn't get over her past mistakes. Her own quaza being powered by her old guitar is excellent symbolism of how Tatania tries to hide and run away from her past but can never escape it.
A video game is an interactive art form solely on the fact that you have to design the mechanics and elements in tandem with audiovisual elements to create a fun product. In that case, No Straight Roads as an art piece is great, but with major flaws. There's lots of love, but I can agree that NSR could have some more polish. Looking forward to more of Metronomik's upcoming works, as an artist, a Malaysian and most importantly, a gamer.

It’s an stupid thing to say, It’s just some famous people said they aren’t art, my problem is that even if one of them is a game designer he’s but one man and his word shouldn’t be taken as gospel. It would be like if a famous painter would say “The Mona Lisa isn’t art” and then half the world would say it wasn’t art. No artist would ever do this since it’s a old famous portrait everyone on earth knows. No, game are an art form in their own right, just like novels bring stuff unique to that format and movie to its format, games bring their own unique aspects such as choice and immersion on a whole different level, you’re not following a character on their journey you are on a journey!

Not gonna lie, I got the collectors edition day one. I never wanted to love a game more then this one. There is just to many little things like the combat, camera and glitches that hold it back. It is still one of the best collectors editions i ever got. Got a Vinyl of a selection from the sound track, some drum sticks, art book and a download of more of the sound track. still missing the pure EDM and rock tracks. still worth it.
Depends on a game. A fully commercial product that was made to make money is not an art in my opinion. I will never consider some disney soulless cashgrab remake art for example. Same goes for some games.

I feel like No Straight Roads can be best summarized as what's known as a "AA Game"; a type of video game that has more polish and production value than your standard Indie, but is still a fair deal rougher and not as large-scale as a AAA game from one of the bigger and well known industry giants.

Since you mentioned EVE having an interesting color pallette, I wanna also point out something I don't think a lot of people notice.
(SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T PLAYED YET!)
Notice that the "Pelt" on Eves back is not just a weird adding, but is the same color scheme as Zuke. Leaves that are green, and dread-like extensions that are blue. It's actually pretty symbolic of the fact that Eve has never really moved on from Zuke despite him running away. She feels like they didn't break up but he just up and left, which might be why she's still willing to take them back. She doesn't see what happenes between them as an end, merely a hiccup. Her representing herself as a chair being tossed aside is even symbolic of how she felt used and thrown out. Really a chair is meant to be sat on and nothing more, pure object. The fact that the second to last boss is literally using herself as a medium to represent the downfall of a relationship by making herself a literal chair should tell people that no matter what, art is art and can be forged from anywhere. This game gets a lil deep if you look a bit more into it lol.
It's more on show, don't tell. So likeminded simpletons won't be able to get it immediately, unless someone mentions it.

-visual arts: from paints to sculput desing and architecture of the in-game buildings a game can use al of this art forms
-literary arts: from in-game actual books to the way the main and side story are written makes a game use it as well
-performing arts: the charects movement use dance arts (see a game making off), music is obvious i mean...., theatre goes to the voice actors
so yeah a single videogame can use all the art forms that exist so saying games are not art is the dumbest statement that can be said
This is one of my favorite games this year! It's not perfect, but it has a special place in my heart.

Fun fact: when you’re in a level or a Bossfight. While holding down the transformation button, you can hear your character’s instrument go with the song. It’s amazing and blew my mind when I discovered it.

I don't mind how this isn't a strict rhythm game, since I get the approach they were going with. While some things do seem underdeveloped to me, I'll say that the soundtrack is tremendous, and the story is at least satisfying. I hope Metronomik keeps making games in the future. If they focus their skills more, they could have a sleeper hit on their hands.
Update bout the switch port: bought the game just recently on the switch as well. I saw that they actually fixed the bugs with the graphics, they look a little bit more cleaner and of high quality.
preordered the switch version for 60sgd, the bugs may be a bummer and the graphics are a bit down graded but overall the art direction and everything else is exactly as advertised
also fan of the ost especially james landino and nikkie simons who did a song on cytus and now for sayu so yeah pretty happy with it hehe
This game is so charming! The simple plot and the goofiness is all part of the charm too. every time i finish a boss battle then mayday and zuke fires a beam, it feels so shonen anime! especially at the end where everyone was combining their power to shoot the comet.
that being said, holy shit why does the textures looks so bad for the switch LMAO
The glitch that used to annoy me was a random glitch in 2 player mode in Yinu's world where 2nd player's directions would flip. But even with that, loved it.

I was gonna do a joke where I list games that are pieces of art, but I realized it would take too long and it’s late. Seriously, there are so many games I could put here. My brain would explode from how many games I’d have to think up. If you want to put games in the reply’s, go ahead. I’m too lazy to do it.
As a Malaysian, we have our own way of speaking English that might sound "weird" or "off" to others. That is because we mix in a lot of other race's languages, slangs and accents into it since Malaysia is a multicultural/multiracial country. It's the same for Singapore, that's why they've coined a term for it: Singlish.

A couple of glitches I noticed were
Zuke's character portrait staying on screen during my first attempt at the second DK West fight
Zuke's footstep sound continuing to play in the cutscene after Eve's boss fight.
Tatiana staggered when the key wasn't finished (I had to restart the boss)
The health bar of the boss not rendering properly creating a white bar
If only the creators who made YIIK would take notes that games aren't art instead of complaining that people didn't understand his game only to ruin more of their reputation.

I had always thought of games as a medium for storytelling. The storyline will draw my attention, but the music and the setting's environment is what gets me hooked. Games may not be art to some, but to me it's an art in of itself. With the time, energy, and effort put into something that is meant to catch your attention and immerse yourself into the world of the creator's making is a work of art.
The only voice acting I would consider strange is Mays. Like, she sounds like 3 different people and there's no consistency?

Like, go see the configurations and check how is the graphics, if it's in low or high, because the lower one is for pcs or any other advices who don't support the game well, but try playing in a higher quality and tell me what you think about! :) (I truly recommend playing at medium graphics)
I geniunely think some cut scenes go on for longer than needed, but that's just me. DJ Subatomic Supernova is just stupendous though.
to be honest the only thing that annoyed me about this game was not being able to rotate the camera during fights...(ive only played till sayu yet and it was really annoying to do the platforming part because i couldn't properly see where i was going and where the platforms ended/started and i couldn't see what enemies were behind me either so the battle became kinda hectic for me)
About the voice acting, I think its the slight Malaysian accent that really throws it off. I as a Malaysian myself didn't really notice it at first but as the games goes on the accent becomes more and more, Malayglish slang, or idk it just me.

When you brought up your DJ world bug, I definitely believe it as it happened to me with 1010, I have it as an unlisted video on my profile bc I wanted to show my friends because after transitioning into the third face (broken factory/heads), I fell out of the world and just flew around, hell after swapping characters a few times the camera became angled. Thank god it was that phase of 1010 so i wasn't in danger and once I got into the final phase it fixed me and I finished that battle with an A rank (I was doing like crazy difficulty I believe)

Love the foreshadowing. Mayday wishes to punch Zuke, and then, both Mayday and Tatiana punch something twice.
You use 1010's graphics as an example on how bad the visual quality gets on certain platforms, but watching eve's is the pie messiah scene in the midnight gospel.
Oh hey! I got this game because of you and I got it on the switch myself. It seems to be a lot more stable now than it was when you played it. The only problem I've seen are very split second lag spikes in the streets however I also haven't played very far in yet so it may still have problems.
Nevermind I take it back! While I only had what I like to call texture fuzz on Yinu's boss fight I have just finished the main campaign and experience about 20 or so bugs which I saved as a 30 sec video on the switch. Whenever it loads a new area, especually in a cutscene, many objects will not be there and then just sporadically appear, especually at the end when the camera changes to different places during the monolog. Its a lot worse with draw distance, in the Yinu part of vinal city the bricks in some places disappear when I am about 5ft away from them. That and I just finished playing DJ Supernova in Parry Mode and found out that if you keep double jumping while holding forward during the 2D section Mayday will walk way up in the sky and along with that I somehow glitched Mayday to be invincible during that fight which I think I caused by trying to hit the planets in the 2D section thinking that I could parry them because, well, parry mode, and the DJ wasn't giving me a whole lot of opportunities. The glitches seemed to get worse and worse as I started playing so Im not sure if its one of "those" games where after a couple hours of playing it starts having problems.
Also handheld mode is abysmal. It lags excruciatingly baddly selecting stuff in the sewers even though its resolution is so bad it had the same screen door effect as the VR Labo Kit. Hopefully they fix these issues, however since there was an update out of the box when I got it a few days ago I doubt they are going to keep updating it, given its a small indie game where a whole nother company is involved with performances on ports.
I would forever love this game, I literally just heard about it a few weeks ago and I'm already obsessed. I admit that there's a lot of glitches and bugs during the boss fights and during some cut scenes where some are very noticeable. But I really do enjoy this game! I just hope they patch the game if they want to put it on steam.

I think it just matters who is hearing it and how they interpret it, while anything can be considered art it is also important to remember that art is also subjective and what is art is on a person to person basis, now on Tatiana I think she does her role well and brings the character to life, but that's just me
Her voice is also raspy yet eloquent, as if she is keeping things formal yet has shown her age throughout the years. It's.. kind of a foreshadowing on why her voice is a little raspy.
I think the "bad" voice acting you are refering to is the accents that sometimes slip. I thought Mayday sounded off until I realized they game was from Malaysia. After that, everytime I hear something most would consider odd, I immediately recognize as their accent.
DK West literally speaks in Malay while rapping in english, Zuke and Mayday speaks in Malay when they get angry,
And my theory on why Yinu sounds like that is because she is literally 9 years old. She probably just emulated her mother's accent or maybe she hasn't really developed much in (conversational) english.
(I say conversational since she knows Music terms and habits such as "fingers curved" when she is sort of panicking during her fight)
There are issues with actual voice acting but I don't classify most as inheritly bad.
Then again, I grew up watching a lot of Upin and Ipin, and Boboboi so its not as off as it should really sound for me.
That's what I said! Most of the VA's are speaking "awkward" english because they aren't from the UK, America or Canada, where most VA's are from.

I don’t really have an issue with any of the accents but I can’t stand Yinu’s voice. The delivery is all over the place and none of her lines make sense when she says them. Otherwise, characters like Mayday or Yinu’s mom don’t bug me because they can say their lines normally .

I love how 1010 is a dual commentary on K-Pop/Boy Bands and mandatory Korean military service!
Also with their militaristic managers or companies they are under in what to do and what not to do ( Neon J. giving orders and 1010 doing just that) to please their fans. Plus the fact that boybands or particularly Kpop boybands are replaceable as shown with the flying factory immediately making a new member off the bat.

Actually now that I think about it Martial arts and Dancing are considered artforms, should streaming game play also be considered art?

I remember following this guy on Twitter who overall was a pretty level headed guy but would often say games aren't art. I found out he says this because them being called art has given rise to walking simulators and games journalists essentially. Kinda floored me with how dumb that was. He also agreed with someone that said games aren't art because they are a craft. Like you can't have a beautifully crafted blade that can be considered art, because blacksmithing is a craft. Or a perfectly made dish, because cooking may be a craft but the term culinary arts exists for a reason. Overall people who say such things have both a very ridged but also poorly defined idea of what art is. Makes no sense to me.

Also, an additional note on the culinary arts is that if you watch any cooking competition, one of the largest things judges consider when judging the dish is presentation, something that absolutely wouldn't matter if it wasn't capable of being an art.
Fortunately metronomink said they're releasing patches for the game, like they did a few days ago for the ps4 version of the game, so i'm sure in a few weeks/months the game will be mostly bug-free

The way he interacts with Eve, DK West, and Mayday in very different ways that exemplify how he feels about each of them and how Zuke’s VA performs his dialogue as the straight man that can lose his cool around certain people is what gives him his personality.

All I can say is games are a combination of all those art forms pretty much. They're no art, but rather they're on their tier above art itself. It allows players to form as many conclusions that the player wishes, because there's that much to look, listen, experience and digest as opposed to simple paintings, pngs, music and movies.
Games are not art, they're beyond art in a way that normal art cannot compete!

I think the "flawed" voice acting came from a lot of the cast being Malaysian. I notice a lot of other English voice acting done by Malaysians (mainly in tv shows and animation) sounds more or less similar.

Trust me, this game is full of jank, so I believe you when you say you fell out of the world. My friend and I are playing coop, and during the Sayu fight he triggered one of the grindrails, dragging me into the cutscene trigger, since both people are needed in 2 player mode. The cutscene triggered and once it concluded we were stuck falling into the void.

It happened to my brother and I too once. One of the developpers explained in a video that both players have to activate the same grindrail in order to avoid this. They're currently working on the bug fixes.

I do think they could've shown Tatiana's redemption a bit more, where in the game it largely happens offscreen. But It's certainly a better redemption than some other media I've seen, and what we got still works, I just think it could've been better.
Also, I REALLY wish they had a proper boss battle against Kliff in the ending, like having him somehow use fanpower against you with you fighting alongside the NSR artists against him or something. would certainly help in showing what happened to him after tatiana seemingly rocked him out of existence.

I agree. It would've made the ending more worth playing through had there been more than just "beat up his robos a bit". Even if it were a short boss, it would've been at least SOMEthing. I watched a speedrun of this game and the ending section really kills the momentum of the run since there's nothing to look forward to
On the one hand, I kind of like the slower paced ending since it gives some time to reflect on things before the final cutscene.
On the other, yeah that section was boring and I was expecting more from it when I spoiled myself on how the story ended. Would have loved to have the NSR artists get more on screen development. But, you know. Indie game that's already ridiculously impressive that I've otherwise had a lot of fun with, so I give it a pass there.

But overrall? I think the reason why it was slowpaced its because it means for us to reflect in our journey. Would be better if Kliff had somekind of relevance in the Tatiana fight.
But the ending of the story was really good and satisfiying, weird, kinda because games are notirius of good endings for the gameplay and not for the story

I love this game. Everything about it just oozes charm. It’s music is some of the best I’d heard.
I thought the voice acting was fine, Yinu just has more of an accent cause she's a child and children have enough problems with one language. The only criticism I had of the game were that personally the bosses seemed to start out too easy. At the very end everything is flowing and you can feel the rhythm (especially in the Yinu fight) but it's be better if it got there earlier in the phases and pushed beyond that in the final phases.
Did Skill Up really research NSR, or any game before playing, let alone reviewing? It's not marketed as rhythm game, of course it's not what he expected as he said himself. Also considering the time gap between his upload date and release date of the game, had a feeling he just rushed the game for the sake of review only. Sure the game lasts only about 5 hours on one playthrough but that may also explains him uploading his review on the SAME DAY as release date (or at least within 24 hours due to time zone difference).
I actually really loved the voice acting in this game, especially the malaysian accents. Honestly I think a lot of people just aren't used to hearing non-eurocentric accents and thus deem it 'bad', I thought they gave the game a feeling of authenticity.

I really appreciate the twist that Tatania was Kur Frya and that her bias against rock was because she couldn't get over her past mistakes. Her own quaza being powered by her old guitar is excellent symbolism of how Tatania tries to hide and run away from her past but can never escape it.
Especially when her greatest foe in the game was her second biggest fan (I give 1st place to Kliff sorry)

A video game is an interactive art form solely on the fact that you have to design the mechanics and elements in tandem with audiovisual elements to create a fun product. In that case, No Straight Roads as an art piece is great, but with major flaws. There's lots of love, but I can agree that NSR could have some more polish.
Looking forward to more of Metronomik's upcoming works, as an artist, a Malaysian and most importantly, a gamer.

It’s an stupid thing to say, It’s just some famous people said they aren’t art, my problem is that even if one of them is a game designer he’s but one man and his word shouldn’t be taken as gospel. It would be like if a famous painter would say “The Mona Lisa isn’t art” and then half the world would say it wasn’t art. No artist would ever do this since it’s a old famous portrait everyone on earth knows. No, game are an art form in their own right, just like novels bring stuff unique to that format and movie to its format, games bring their own unique aspects such as choice and immersion on a whole different level, you’re not following a character on their journey you are on a journey!

I've played the game and I'm in love with it. Not only this hits me as an artist but also as a fan. I love this game so much I wanted to make a video essay about it. Skill Up never played Parry Mode or it would ruin his review.
Not gonna lie, I got the collectors edition day one. I never wanted to love a game more then this one. There is just to many little things like the combat, camera and glitches that hold it back. It is still one of the best collectors editions i ever got. Got a Vinyl of a selection from the sound track, some drum sticks, art book and a download of more of the sound track. still missing the pure EDM and rock tracks. still worth it.

Depends on a game. A fully commercial product that was made to make money is not an art in my opinion. I will never consider some disney soulless cashgrab remake art for example. Same goes for some games.

Video games are a form of art too, if anything it has 3 all of these things and more combined.
I think Skill up went on playing the game wanting a rhythm based game, but NSR is actually music based game that may or may not be played with rhythm.
