thank you so much for the lesson. I have zero knowledge of the grounded theory but my teacher asked me present in the class. So, I came across your lesson and listen to it several times and planning to present it today in the class! thank you once again.
This video is so insanly good and helpful! We had several longer videos in our school to explain all the things you just explained in 5 minutes. Keep this up, its amazing!
Thank God there is some youtube channel which provides easy and clear understandable videos on psychology theories. This gonna really help us in upsc preparation.
Ok, firstly, the video is a very good and concise description of the grounded theory approach. Secondly, it's not perfect :) What it misses or it's not clear enough (among hundreds of other details you can find in books or articles written by Glaser, Strauss, Corbin et al): the goal. Any grounded theory research have a goal - the core concept(s)/category is not the goal, neither is the theory - but what that theory try to explain, a phenomenon of prior interest for the researcher. Also, the process of coding for GT - it's not quite trivial and must be explained in detail, in another video maybe, together with the idea of circular research and constant comparison :) A very good video, excellent for presenting this approach in a method class.... thank you :)
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! 🙌 We genuinely appreciate it and hope to delve deeper into the details you mentioned in our future videos. We fully agree that our introductory video left out some intricacies of grounded theory, especially regarding the goal and the coding process. Your insights will certainly guide our upcoming content. Thanks again for helping us improve! 😊 We highly recommend that you check out our grounded theory blogpost where we go into more detail and have an extended video: delvetool.com/groundedtheory
If this channel was a school, i'd apply and probably get a free phD within a week. The other option is overpaying tuition and wasting years, hoping your teachers are at least 5% as good as these videos. It's a new day.
Thank you very much for your explanation. Its very clear. Please share about coding paradigm in axial coding and how to implement it in an example. Thanks again.
Thank you for the video! It was really helpful. Just a question, if in grounded theory you first collect data, analyze it, and then proceed to derive your theory, is a theoretical framework required before conducting a grounded theory research?
Glad you enjoyed the video! Grounded theory helps you derive new theories, so you do NOT need a theoretical framework before conducting grounded theory.
It was really a fantastic video explained GT in short time. Just a question, if we collect and analyse the data iteratively, then probably there would be some research question in our mind, so it's not a hypothesis?
Great video thank you and subscribed. I like how grounded theory is being renewed in post-qualitative approaches. In fact I've found the differences between grounded theory and post-qualitative methodologies are often few in practice and philosophy. I'm writing this comment because you might be interested in viewing your final theory as an 'entanglement, 'actor-network', 'situation', or 'arena' and other such ontologies of post-qualitative researchers which can be constructed through grounded theory.
Thanks for your question! In grounded theory you keep recruiting and interviewing people until you hit theoretical saturation. Theoretical saturation is the point at which a researcher has collected enough data and conducted enough analysis to feel confident that they have identified all of the relevant categories in their data. In grounded theory research, the number of participants needed for theoretical saturation varies depending on the type of data being collected and the complexity of the phenomenon being studied. You can read more about it here: delvetool.com/blog/theoreticalsaturation
Thanks alot for the satisfactory answer. During the lecture you talked about generalizability but in phenomenology people give their own subjective experiences which might not be similar how can we generalize peoples experience situation to other people's experiences. Please give an example on how this happens.
I’m glad that you found our answer satisfactory. The original grounded theory was developed based on the assumption that people perceive the world differently, so there is no fundamental conflict with the idea that people provide their subjective experience. Grounded theory does not assume that all people will experience a phenomenon in the same way, and often times those conflicts in experience will help you build a richer theory. I recommend reading our article on Constant Comparison Method to learn how to analyze interviews that may conflict with your developing theory: delvetool.com/blog/ccm
Thank you for your question! If you're referring to Grounded Theory, it's primarily a qualitative methodology focused on developing theories directly from data rather than starting with a hypothesis. While it's generally applied to qualitative data, its principles can sometimes be adapted to quantitative data, for instance, in mixed-methods research where patterns from quantitative findings are explored in greater depth qualitatively. Let us know if you'd like more details!
In Grounded Theory, research questions should be broad and open-ended to allow theory to emerge from the data. Focus on exploring processes, interactions, or experiences rather than testing specific hypotheses.
Hi, I am trying to find out whether there is change in the information needs of the investors and for this i am analyzing interviews and based on it i will come to conclusion, can this be called grounded theory? ❤ help !
Can I ask why grounded theory is presented only as a qualitative methodology here? There are many established studies that use ground theory methodology, that employ quant research methods/data sets. Why do you think that grounded theory only uses qualitative methods and data?
We cover here the Grounded Theory originally developed by sociologist Glaser and Strauss which is a qualitative approach. We are also a UA-cam channel about qualitative analysis, so we tend to cover primarily qualitative approaches. Though we would love to read a study that uses the type of grounded theory that you are describing. Feel free to send it over!
@@DelveTool I can send over a study, but it is not rare to see grounded theory which works with quantative data. It is worth noting I think, that often the methodology is mixed method and employs both qual and quant methods. I'm sure you've probably read this anyway but this is a best practice framework for grounded theory methodology: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6318722/. "A hallmark of GT is concurrent data generation/collection and analysis. In GT, researchers may utilise both qualitative and quantitative data as espoused by Glaser’s dictum; ‘all is data’".
Hi there, my professor mentioned grounded theory in terms of interactionism, saying that interactionism adopts grounded theory, and under grounded theory, she said "although many believe this is a qualitative method, it is not- it is a general method" and then stumbled upon this video-- the first definition really threw me off- is it or isnt it?!
We would certainly say that Grounded Theory is very popular as a qualitative method, and that's certainly how we use and discuss it ourselves. But especially in the context of interactionism, I can see why your professor would say it's not an exclusively qualitative method. Though we would love to hear more!
A qualitative code is a label used in qualitative research to categorize and identify themes, patterns, or concepts within textual data. These codes help researchers systematically analyze and interpret non-numerical data, such as interviews, observations, or documents, to extract meaningful insights.
Great question! Statistical inference, which is used to infer properties of a population based on statistics, is not appropriate for grounded theory. Instead Grounded theory’s purpose is to describe phenomena, and provide rich and deep analysis. To ensure your grounded theory is sound, do iterative data collection and analysis using theoretical sampling until you reach theoretical saturation. You can read more about this process here: delvetool.com/blog/theoretical-sampling.
There's nothing in Grounded Theory that says you can't interview the same people more than once. But generally when you are doing more theoretical sampling, you'll be recruiting different people based on your evolving analysis
The resources the university provided is ridiculous. The writers are so focused on trying to sound intellectual they can't properly explain the topic. Thank you, my suspicion was right that this is not a hard concept.
