Hello Emmy. I know I'm a bit late getting to this, but just wanted to chime in about the chowder. These freeze-dried entrees actually take 16 ounces of hot water, not 10 ounces. That would explain why yours came out so "dry", looking more like stuffing than a real chowder. I just had this same menu today and the chowder had the consistency of a pretty thick New England clam chowder. It was quite good too!
The gum is xylitol gum which is a fake sugar known to be good for dental health. It's known to reduce chances of cavities and remineralize teeth. Xylitol can cause diarrhea and gas in some people! Hope that's helpful!
Yeah, tho it might use a different sugar alcohol. Your body can't break it down, but your gut bacteria can, and that's what causes the diarrhea and gas.
My favorite thing about these videos, is that she's descriptive enough after tasting each item, I can actually taste it. So it's like I'm eating these with her. If that makes sense. I feel immersed is what I'm trying to say.
Love your military ration reviews! When you have live on these rations for weeks on end you learn all sorts of tricks. I spent 26 1/2 years in the Army.three tours in Nam. When the casts are opened everyone tries to get the ones they like and if you’re were late tough luck! There things you like and things you don’t. When everyone sits down to there is a trading frenzy. Some items have a higher value than others. Bargaining can get heated. Usually everybody gets what they want. Usually. I lived through c-rats,LRRPs,T-Rats and the old MREs. The only constant was to be sure you had enough bottles of Tobasco sauce to last the time you would be out! Everything is better with T-rats sauce. During Nam and until c-rations were replaced by MREs Tobasco company put out a C-action cookbook of all the recipes that were though up to made C-rats more palatable.T-rats were larger tins that the cooks heated in boiling water and served in the rear or sent to units forward in marmite cans (like a big thermos container) and served to groups. Some were great and some were not. They came with large accessory packs and locally produced products, such as fresh bread. Sorry about the length of this, but thought it might interest you. Retired in’91, so my experience is a little bit dated. Keep up your videos.Keep misspelling Tobasco, sorry.
Loved this story! Thank you for sharing and your time. Wish I could ask my dad about his time in the military ❤ He joined the guard as soon as he graduated high school, probably very smart branch choice considering that would have been around May 1971 and surely would have been drafted. We got MREs during Katrina. I remember the little bottles of Tabasco. I was very young, but I remember being happy when there was something recognizable like m&m’s
I hate black coffee but when I was in the Army and out in the field I could drink black coffee and it was the most wonderful thing ever. So yes, perspective and environment can make all the difference in the way things taste. :D
Though I don't like seafood chowder or really Tabasco for the most part, I feel a little sad that she never put the Tabasco in the seafood chowder to be surprised at its improvement.
The gum may have laxative effects if made with sugar alcohol as sweetener (i.e. mannitol, xylitol and sorbitol). But you must eat a lot: between 20-70g of those sweetener per day and depends upon the individual.
+PratoFundo You're 100% correct. It's very unlikely to have much effect on anyone unless they chew ridiculous amounts of gum a day, and even then your body can adjust. I suspect the fear of any laxative properties originates from the legendary Haribo™ Sugarless Gummy Bears, in which the sugar substitute they use is shockingly laxative in nature. It's a product called Lycasin, and it's not used in any chewing gum I am aware of in the U.S. or Canada. I can't speak for Europe or Asia.
+PratoFundo That is correct. This is the first time I have even heard of it being a rumour. In Sweden all our gums and cough drop has a warning that if consumed more than a certain amount it has laxative effects. So if you buy a bag with 25 gums and you use about 10-15 in a day, chances are big that you have to run to the toilet.
KnightofDark001 my school lunches aren’t bad the only difference is the chips they sell in the snack line and instead of normal pop it diet the actual food stayed about the same
Omg congrats on 1 million subs!! I've been a subscriber forever and seeing this milestone makes me so incredibly happy for you. I wish nothing but more success in your future, Emmy!!
The short bread cookies are amazing. One time in the field I traded and traded until I got instant pudding, nutella peanut butter, and cookies. Mixed it all together and just about had a heart attack
It's a Saturday night, I'm sitting on my couch, and I was just thinking "I should go to Emmy's channel and have an Emmy night!" And now I have something new to kick it off! :)
She's very proper and kind, I think. Like you said, even things she doesn't care for, she tries to find something positive to say. Only on a rare occasion have I seen her flat out say she doesn't care for something and even then she will follow it up with, it's not my taste or something similar. I wish more people were like that!
I really appreciate your videos. your affect and assessment of the taste matches exactly my observations. thank you so much for investing your time and energy to share these.
Hi, I was a cook in the marines, h/s co 3/2 2 mar div. 84 to 88. Cooked in the field A lot. funny stories to relate. One, this MSGT, would not eat MRE's. said they were not healthy. Being a cook, benefit was I could get us chow from the messhall often even when we were on training exercises. I could take a truck or humvee and drive back to the mess hall and get real chow, fruit there and then bring it back for us to eat. Good memories, that MSGT enjoyed the apples and oranges I brought back. Funniest was we were in the Phillipines doing jungle survival training and we had snails and rice cooked in bamboo for dinner. when I came back with veal cutlets, and all kinds of stuff the best was how our Negrito Guides who were training us were so glad to to eat the chow I brought back. We all were. It is true its good to make friends with the cooks if your in the military. Least when I was in. Towards the end of my enlistment they started using pre made tray pack type chow. its was ok but not as good as when we cooked everything in field messes on the ranges.
+Vaivela Lutui Some are, especially the beef stew, but most aren't, like the terrible vegetable omeletter or something and the fucking chickedn fajjitta
Really well done and refreshingly short! I think many of the other "MRE" reviewers could learn how to cover everything they do but in a reasonable amount of time.
just found your page and I gotta say I love how you present everything. Your so sunny and upbeat, you seen like such a positive person. Definitely subscribing to your channel.
You have a positive caring attitude Emmy and I appreciate that. Your comments are inciteful and I learn from you. You know how to describe aspects and characteristics of flavor and consistency. Keep up the good work. Oh and I agree with the comments, you have beautiful teeth. Lol.
oh yeah she is a doctor! so she is in nowhere dangerous!!! but she did get really constipated with the food! I guess if your in the field they don't want you to stop and take a poop!!!
Emmy: I absolutely love your videos, especially the MRE videos. I find your voice so soothing. You speak so clearly and fast it's mesmerizing 😂 And the way you so politely eat! I love love love your videos! Keep it up ❤️
One thing I remember doing with the LRRP rations (also freeze dried) was adding a little more water than they called for and letting sit a little longer as well. Just FYI. Cheers.
What an incredibly intelligent, articulate, lovely woman. Wonderfully done Video's. I NEVER dreamed a 74 yr old man could BINGE watch someone eating and reviewing MRE's LOVE everything you produce Emmy!
I love her voice, her face, her skin omg she's fucking beautiful! And when she talks, its so calming like she'd never hurt a fly and make a really good older sister. I don't know but that's the vibe I get from her
I started with your MRE videos and fell in love with your personality pretty much instantly! I don’t think you could make a bad video, and I’ve even gone back to watch your first upload. 😂😊 also, lemon fresh. 🙃
US MREs have a flameless ration heater. It's basically a plastic bag that you put your food in and pour water in and there's some sort of chemical bag that boils it.
My nephew says with any dehydrated chowder/meal, he adds and extra 1/4 cup of water than the package recommends cuz there are always pieces that don't get enough water and after stirring he give it a shake to make sure it well mixed.
This is what i love so much because i watch these videos with my girlfriend since she has lived in a military household before and always heard complaints about how bad the MRE's were XD so now we bond and watch these and it makes us happy
that "chowder" definitely looks like it could use some more hot water and time. i guess with any recipe... homemade or pre packaged... you don't know how it'll turn out the first time you prepare it.
Delightful as always, my dear lady. Technically, an MCW meal isn't an MRE because it isn't Ready to Eat right out of the package; it requires rehydration. I know people tend to use MRE as a generic term for almost any military ration, but that's not totally correct. That's not a criticism, just an observation. And I know you take deserved pride in your productions.
for the soups and chowders, you can add a little more water to thin them out a bit. also with the nuts, dried fruit, candies, and trail mixes- add them all together to get a better balance
I'm almost entirely certain that there's no laxative quality to anything you eat out of those bags. It's just a prank that people play. Like a scout camp, we'd tell some of our more gullible peers to stay away from the desserts because they had laxatives in them, that way there was more dessert for the rest of us. I also worked as a civilian on an air force base for a couple years when I was younger, and they did the same damn thing there too.
+Kaleb Adams Many of the sugar substitutes can cause diarrhea if eaten in quantity or if the person is sensitive. In my experience certain menus do cause "irregularity".They are usually the high carb,/empty calorie menus that are most often found for breakfast. Containing nothing more than fiber, sugar, and coffee many men and women have had to run and take a squat after eating what amounts to 400% of your recommended daily fiber intake in one small meal. The veggie omelette on the other hand, just made people barf.MRE breakfasts suck.
+Kaleb Adams In my JROTC and military brat experience, MRE's really back you up. After living off them for a while a lot of people get seriously constipated so I was taught that the gum would help clear the problem.
xapxap I'm sure 99.9% of the time the gum is not to blame. However, if MREs are eaten regularly, I can attest to either having one extreme or the other. Having oatmeal breakfast bars, oatmeal cookies, granola, toaster pastries, nut and dried fruit and coffee all in one meal (breakfast) can really mess with your gut. Still better than the veggie omelette.
I love her omg it's not often you find a youtuber who's just calm and settled like this. after watching reaction/taste videos with yelling or gross chewing noises or spit or vomit, this is nice. also she's really pretty and her hair reminds me of tracer's from overwatch lmao
This is the first video that Ive seen so far from her that she actually had to spit something out. Like she ate a zEBRA TARANTULA AND THAT WAS A CANDY CHERRY. Like whaaaa.
So my 10 year old sister loves your videos, but she always falls asleep while watching them, she says that your voice is so soft, and it just makes her go to sleep lol
We were hit hard by the dot com bubble when I was in my teens cause my dad was a Bios Engineer. Someone was kind enough to give us some MREs when we were almost out of food. My memory of them was good, the potatoes and smoked almonds stand out the most. I never had smoked almonds till that moment. The potatoes you add water to but they were shoestring shaped and tasted better freeze dried than with the water. They were like tiny potato chips. I'm getting all sorts of nostalgia from this. Not nostalgic for the starving bit but definitely nostalgic for the smoked almonds. XD
Emmy I don't know if you've been told this already but the smoked almonds might appear shorter because they put them in one of those big tumblers with the seasoning and spin them to get them coated with the gritty seasoning so it tends to break parts of them off. I wondered what was up when my husband brought one home and that was the general consensus on the military forums I managed to find. If you've already been told or found the answer yourself sorry for spewing the same info at you. I enjoy your videos and your genuine reactions always make me smile :) It also prevents me from having to try things like balut. You're much more adventurous than I would be. Thank you for sharing with us! :)
+emmymadeinjapan If you don't know where then just tell him you don't know. Instead of say"eBay" with a question mark like that. I can say with confidence that I have bought MREs at surplus stores and on Craigslist.
+ohwerdna Well seeing as how MREs and that stuff is kinda what the entire channel is about, I'm more than sure she knows where to get them. Yes, you can get them off Ebay. In fact, that's the best place to get them. I have to get them in singles from a nearby store at 7.50 a meal while if I bought a box off Ebay at 60 bucks, it'd be 5 a meal.
I* am sooo glad I found you Emmy! I am very sick right now (I have MS) so I am binge watching all your interesting vids Thank you for helping me.. HUGSSS!
If you do another MRE video in the future, just be wary of any milkshakes that some of them have. There was a salmonella thing going around with the milkshakes, depending on when it was made. I just wouldn't risk it. I know you're lactose intolerant, but just in case you got a crazy idea to try it.
Sugar free gum does have a gassy/diarrhea side effect to it but you have to chew a lot of it to get that effect. Like, say, chewing a half/whole pack in an hour or two (if you spit them out after the flavor wears off and start on a new piece right after.) It's actually a nice safe laxative. It takes a couple hours to kick into effect.
I love how Emmy is so kind to whatever she's tasting
If someone were to eat me, I would want it to be her because she'd be so complimentary
Jordan Cannon 😂😂😂😂
Except the dried cherry. That must be one terrible cherry if she dislikes it so much.
@@person1232 that cherry was the first time I've ever heard her call something gross so it must have been pretty awful
I'm still waiting for the day she spits something out and yells "What the fuck was that!?" 😂
No idea why i love watching people eat MREs
ikr I love watching emmy eat
+Joy Standard
There are a lot of other things I would love to watch her do, but I don't expect such videos will be found on UA-cam.

Oh, I assume thats whats up with those sugarfree gummybears?
KitchenWytch also poisionous for dogs
Yeah, tho it might use a different sugar alcohol. Your body can't break it down, but your gut bacteria can, and that's what causes the diarrhea and gas.
KitchenWytch which could be useful if eating mres for several days!
KitchenWytch very helpful to me! Thank you! So you said xylitol is good for dental health but you also said it could cause diarrhea and gas?

You're videos are so calming and there's something about the way you say "butter" that is so satisfying haha
You actually do a decent job describing the food, not like crazyrussianhacker who says only: WOW THIS ACTUALLY TASTES AMAZING!!
Γεώργιος Μαντζάκος Yeah i think he does it to try it but emmy does it for the sake of reviews, ehich either way is fine, but emmys is better
Γεώργιος Μαντζάκος crazyrussianhacker is just very appreciative of the fact that he has food to eat. And seems to think almost all food is good food
I find Crazyrussianhacker's food taste tests videos are always hilarious. Although they are both "food reviews" related, I love them both ✌🏻

weed boi cause you haven't had to eat them for 2 weeks during field op after field op after field op... 😥
It's all in the preparation. In the end when you been rucking up and down the hills, it will do the trick, preferably if it is heated.
The government is brainwashing you for the near future

Emmy your voice is so soothing and I watch YT at night. You are the only UA-camr that puts me to sleep! :) Anyone else fall asleep listening to Emmy?
She's so cool and cute😩

I love the cup you had your coffee from! Super cute and totally fits your aesthetic.
I was waiting for you to find the coffee lol! XoXo
Watching these is so comforting
+Kaleb Adams Wait. I lied. I looked it up. It's a myth.
xapxap I'm sure 99.9% of the time the gum is not to blame.
+Samidella idella yeah have you guys heard the sugar free gummy bear stories? pretty scary stuff, no joke
Emmy is so gorgeous! my goodness. my girl crush 😍
Her voice is so soft and soothing. She can definitely put me to sleep
lol canned pork brains = yum. government candied cherry = gross. that's the only thing I've ever seen you spit out.
I've been watching for 4 years now, and I've never seen her spit anything out before or since the dried cherry.
XD
You should have added the creamer, cos you said it was NON DAIRY creamer. Might have made the coffee taste better! ;)
I honestly love your reactions when you eat something 😊
Have you ever thought about being a judge in CHOPPED?
Shawn Meldrum they only want celebrity chefs who are pompus and will degrade your hard work
Emmy I don't know if you've been told this already but the smoked almonds might appear shorter because they put them in one of those big tumblers with the seasoning and spin them to get them coated with the gritty seasoning so it tends to break parts of them off. :)
where do you bye these when i was little my best freind had these and ive wanted to get the taste of the past again where do u bye theses?
+ethan timothy eBay?
army barracks stores
+John Connor people send her food from across the world :) so she could get these and never know where they were bought
I also like these military ration tasting videos! :D
Thank you!
You should just use bottled water. In the field you can't always build a fire. So you should try doing it without plates. And without cups
Yep, I did it here: ua-cam.com/video/8K2MDHWT8O8/v-deo.html MRE Field Tasting.
Most of MRE's have an heating pouch, where you just add water for it to heat up
+Renzeth Bulawan every us mre has one.
Michael O'Rourke she's doing a review of it not simulating a real meal, and besides you can't see all the details in the bags
sniperlif3 year you're right
Love your videos so amazing !
that drink looked radioactive!
Only emmymadeinjapan can make eating a boring MRE seem like the most interesting activity in this world (I am like hypno toad watching her videos)
Hearing Emmy say "that's sick" 😂
I* am sooo glad I found you Emmy! I am very sick right now (I have MS) so I am binge watching all your interesting vids Thank you for helping me.. HUGSSS!
If you do another MRE video in the future, just be wary of any milkshakes that some of them have. There was a salmonella thing going around with the milkshakes, depending on when it was made. I just wouldn't risk it. I know you're lactose intolerant, but just in case you got a crazy idea to try it.
ThriceDice have you played kingdom hearts?
I could listen to you talk all day😊😊
During my crucible if we had to shit we used MRE bags.
Really? Fucking hell man
+Erick Gatz ya gotta do wat u gotta do
wow, that is interesting
+Johnny Frost Really handy, tbh
+Johnny Frost fuck that noise :( uncomfortable shits are the worst!
MRE's have improved in 20 yrs since i last had to eat them.... thank goodness for the guys that still do
That cherry must have been awful lol I’ve never seen her react like that 😂 I think she even spit it out
Definitely the best looking of the MRE reviewers I've seen on UA-cam.
4:50 When you say "Anything you need to dispose of" I'm sure we were all thinking "Poop pouch"
It takes a couple hours to kick into effect.
she looks like faith from Mirrors Edge.
Yup
I said the same thing!
you're just saying that because she's american-asian.
Well I'm Asian american and I don't look like faith from mirrors edge.
of course that's because you're a man
Definitely the prettiest ration reviewer that I've ever seen....(so far).
Lemon fresh ;)
