In this clip, DJ Vlad and Adam22 talk about Gillie Da Kid's claim about ghostwriting for Lil Wayne. This prompts a discussion about whether or not Drake's legacy has been affected by the Quentin Miller ghostwriting rumors over the years. As the interview moves along, DJ Vlad openly admits that he doesn't always come up with his own interview questions for VladTV. From there, Adam22 talks about some of the intricacies involved with assigning different duties to various employees so that he can be more efficient in creating content for his platform, "No Jumper." Vlad made a mistake comparing singers to rappers. The difference is in what the audience is paying for. Yea Beyonce has writers, but the talent that we’re paying for is her VOICE, her vocal singing ability primarily. The style the look the dancers etc are secondary to that and its her vocal ability that the audience knows is unique and authentic to Beyonce regardless of the words she says.
Being a rapper/mc is the opposite of that. It’s literally the words they speak that is the talent we pay for.

I think this is only half-true. Since the dawn of rap, ghost writing has been a staple. A rapper doesn't have to write their lyrics, an MC/lyricist does. A rapper and MC aren't the same thing. Just like how Beyonce's ability to sing songs matters, a rapper's ability to rap also matters.

It’s just sad that people who are out of touch with the culture of rap are always asked about their “opinions” on our icons in our music. Singing and rapping is completely different it doesn’t matter if your a singer who can write because if you can’t sing it falls on deaf ears you should just write for the others but as a rapper your talent is your writing that’s why it’s value is placed on rappers who write their verses not a hook not a tune but actual verses. We know everyone one in the industry uses someone to make a beat or compose the music and maybe some hooks here and there but rappers write their lyrics even using beyonce as a comparison is still a little crazy because even beyonce has written a hefty part of her catalogue yes she maybe have taken inspirations and songs for some of it but we atleast know beyonce can write if she really wanted to. That’s what makes a artist a true artist it’s the originality and creativeness of them. That’s why when you say “it doesn’t matter if they do t write it” you come up with a bunch of cookie cutter rappers who all sound alike and have the same lyrical content because it’s not coming from their own creativeness. That’s why their is no individualism anymore. Nicki has written every rap she has released we not talking about hooks or some singing parts we are talking bar for bar verse for verse Nicki has never had someone write her bars her identity is in every rap she has wrote from her iconic phrases to her flows to her witty wordplay you know she wrote it.

It can be said that producers like DJ Premier and Pharrell who often craft beats with built in hooks have made things easier for some of the most celebrated artists. But if I'm doing a comparison based on equal factors, the more self contained artist has an advantage. Especially if they create hits, classics, etc.

Nicki didn't say anything about Cardi using a ghostwriter before Cardi admitted it herself. Real rappers write their own verses. I don't mind a hook being presented for a feature but that's it. Rappers are not singers.

There’s a big difference between writing bars and writing songs. Music is a collaborative effort and a lot of the artists that don’t use help don’t make it to that top level. For sure there are exceptions but the biggest always get help for song concepts. Like Chyhi said, “you think these guys have time to sit in the studio all day and write lyrics when they have million dollar companies to run?”
Hmmm I guess I get his point but I think the distinction is that when it came to rap there was always this vibe that they’re coming from a real place. Beyoncé is a singer, the ability to perform a song well is more important than her ability to write a song, though she does work on all aspects of her craft (meaning she has input in her production, sampling, etc). There’s also a difference in my mind between getting help writing a rap vs having someone just put a verse in front or you. I think if more rappers just admitted they used ghostwriters it would at least normalize the practice.

Be that as I may you can't call yourself one the the greats in hip hop if you don't write your own shit. That's what separates hip hop from others genre's of music. It is what it is.

Obviously I'm not saying Nicki isn't talented but to say that success always means talent is false. Madonna is not particularly talented but is still one of the most successfully artists of all time. Hip hop isn't what it used to be nor does it stand on the same values & principles that made it so interesting & unique at the time of it's inception. A person's ability to cleverly tell a story while thoughtfully & creatively stringing words together that rhymed was the core foundation of the art. In my opinion for what hip hop is defined by I think it's disingenuous for a rapper to have ghost writers & claim to be the best but from a but from a business perspective I understand that in these times the image is what generates the revenue. I also think Hopsin did an excellent job in explaining this as well.
