    Thank you so much for your tutorial. I accidentally shot in HLG, and I was really discouraged about the colorization. 😟But your lut and explanations saved my life. Many thanks!😊

    This video finally unleashed the full potential of my Pocket 3. Honestly, I was disappointed by the normal color profile - the blacks were too black, some yellows were weird, it just looked unnatural. DLog-M was not much better, especially shooting in low-light conditions, just crushed those blacks. HLG really does the job though, - the dynamic range is great, plenty of space to color grade, no weird artefacts - I love it! Thank you for sharing the lut with us, it makes it so much easier!

      I appreciate the feedback. HLG is definitely my favorite mode on the Pocket 3 and really produces great results, even in the Rec.709 color space.

      So if i got it right, dlog-m is not usable for HDR? I need to use HLG to create hdr footage?

    • @jogalong

      @@yannickputtemans yeah, dlog-m sucks. It has worse dynamic range than normal color profile.

    Hello, I don't know how to thank you for the precious news. No one told me what I learned from watching your video. I did some tests with the Pocket 3 and I must say that HLG really gives better results than D-Log M.
    Since my English is not good, it is not my native language, I didn't understand something well and I would like to ask you 2 questions please:
    1) How much is HLG less flexible in postproduction compared to D-Log M? In other words, if a clip was shot wrong, if it is overexposed or underexposed, can you improve it more with D-Log M because it has a better dynamic range? But how much better?
    2) I downloaded your Lut and installed it on Edius, like a miracle that Lut fixes a clip in HLG in a flash, but I noticed that all the clips come out overexposed by 1-2 apertures . But is it normal? Did you make that Lut like that on purpose?
    Thanks again.

      Thank you for your feedback and I’m glad you’ve been able to try out HLG. HLG is really impressive on this camera but I found takes a little bit of testing to get the results you really like.
      For number 1 I think the HLG is a bit more flexible but you’d want to make sure to not too severely overexpose or underexpose as that can be hard to correct.
      For number 2 it mainly depends upon the exposure settings you had when filming. Mine was set to -0.5 and this meant I had to bring up my exposure a little bit when editing. Since this is primarily designed to be a conversion LUT you should be able to bump down your exposure levels a bit if needed.

    Have you made a video on 24fps and 60fps ? Do you always use 60fps? Using the DJI osmo pocket 3
    If I'm going to put the op3 in my backpack and make walking videos , is 24fps good enough? I don't intend to do any slo-mo ever

  • @MattCassCook

    Goddamnit man I love you. Thank you for this and the LUT bro, it's massively helpful! Only issue is that when using your LUT, my footage still looks really blown out and overexposed... any idea why that might be? I'm using a MacBook Pro 2023 M2 model and PP working in 709.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  5 місяців тому

      You’re welcome! So there are a few possibilities with this. I would say first of all make sure the footage you are capturing isn’t overexposed to begin with. If it isn’t overexposed then the next thing to check is to make sure everything in Premiere Pro is in the same Rec.709 color space including the footage itself and the project settings. The MacBook Pro 2023 M2 is a great model and will plow through this footage with no problem so I know it’s not a device issue for you.

    Thanks a lot, now I know how to deal with hlg files.
    I purchased pocket3 last month for daily life recording and I clip tons of life footage every week. There is still a problem that bothers me during the actual pocket3 hlg footage shooting process.
    The hlg has a noticeable grayish cast in low-light environments or small light ratios, should I recognize this and quickly restore the colors? Or should I set it up at the time of shooting so that all footage can be used directly for editing?

    This is a very useful video for me. Thank you. I made an hdr (hlg) video as you suggested. However, since it is a 1 hour 20 minute video (588GB), it cannot be uploaded to UA-cam. UA-cam explains that it is limited to 256GB. What should I do in this case?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  5 місяців тому

      I’m glad you found this helpful. So I would recommend exporting at a lower bitrate if the bitrate you exported at is high. I recommend a bitrate of 56Mbps if the frame rate is 24 or 30 fps.

      The video shot at hlg 4K 60 frames was color graded at 2100hlg, and as you mentioned, the color correction changed when exported at h.264 bitrate at 80. Overexposed. Am I doing something wrong?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  5 місяців тому

      @user-qm8ge3pw8y Check out the specific settings I mention starting at 9:55 in this video for export. It will have to be either QuickTime or h.265 for the codec in order to support the HDR. The h.264 will not support the HDR. Using h.265 will result in a smaller file size than QuickTime without a significant reduction in quality.

    the video tutorial was good, however, you forgot some key points and skipped some tabs that need to be dealt with, like the display format, maybe you're recording in30fps that's why you didn't tackle that one but not all are doing that, some are doing 60fps or 24fps.

      @E9ONE1 Okay great, just wanted to confirm which version of the Mic. To pair it you’ll want to power on your Pocket 3 and swipe down to the mic pairing mode. Then power on your Mic 2 and hold down the Bluetooth/link button on the mic until it turns a solid blue. The Mic should then pair.

      @E9ONE1 Look on the other side. You’ll see a Bluetooth symbol by the button. That is the button you’ll need to hold to get it to pair.

    Not a great Colorista here but how well would the "Auto" button under Basic Corrections fair grading these kind of files? I use the Auto quite often to just get a slight boost in my Auto color mode footage from Drone and Pocket.

    Can I ask, why ever use D-Log? If HLG is 10bit HDR, can be colour graded, has great range and can also be exported as SDR, what's the purpose of D-Log? I'm definitely I'm confused by this! 😂

    • @GreatDayForAHike

      D-Log M is easier to work with than HLG footage. HLG’s core benefit is with HDR workflows and most content creators prefer to work with Rec.709 color space simply because HDR is still not that big of a thing. In other words the extra work with HLG to Rec.709 may not be worth it to most when D-Log M can get great results in Rec.709, even if not quite as good as HLG. That is my take on this.

      @@GreatDayForAHike Thanks for the reply! I guess that's what surprises me, that HDR is still not considered a 'standard' enough that more people are working in it. All my devices have HDR, and I assumed it was as ubiquitous as 4K now, but I guess that will still take some time then. :)
