Sanjay Leela Bhansali has openly said that he wrote the film with Madhuri Dixit in mind. And he had offered it to Kajol too. Manisha Koirala said this herself in an interview 3 years ago that "SLB wanted Madhuri or Kajol". Whether he offered it to Manisha is not fully known, maybe she was busy in other projects. Kareena Kapoor was in fact given a signing amount for the film (she revealed this in a video on Film Companion). But of course he met Aishwarya Rai at the Raja Hindustani premier and decided to give her the role, and she played it so well.

Ek fact aap bhool gaye. Bhansali ne Nandini ka role MADHURI DIXIT ko dhyan mein rakh ke likha tha, but he could not meet Madhuri because he was new and Madhuri was Superstar. Bhansali ne apne interview nein bataya ki apni woh khwahish ki wajah se Madhuri ke aged hote hue bhi Devdas mein liya Kyuki Madhuri ke sath kaam karna Bhansali ka dream tha.
