Hi! Thank you so much. Does the Counseling program fall under STEM? Were there any international students in your batch? Do they find it challenging to get their work permit post study? :)

Hi Dharshini! That's a tough question -- It often depends on who you ask and the set-up of a school and their program. For example, I did my undergrad in Psychology and this major was housed in our College of Science. I will say typically though, counseling in particular is viewed as more of a "social science" whereas I think psychology may fit more neatly under STEM. Especially PhD programs in Psychology where you are actively coming up with and testing hypotheses for research. I'm not aware of any international classmates in my cohort, though that doesn't necessarily mean we don't have any or that there aren't any in the other cohorts I just haven't met yet! :)

hi, I really find your videos helpful. I just had one question. You said not to write about your personal history in the personal statement or essay for the application, but what if that was part of the question?

Hi Morgan, thank you for watching! I'm glad it was helpful. :) That is a great question! I believe I did have one PsyD application that asked something personal. In this case, of course it is okay to address the question and get more personal about it. They will want to see how you handle difficult people or situations, how you manage emotions, and how you grow from and overcome challenges - So just be careful not to get caught up in being perceived as overly negative, blaming others, etc. As a therapist, you will likely be in many high-emotion situations with clients, so they will want to see that you can manage your own emotions and remain calm while in tough situations. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Hello! How cool, where I am originally from is not too far from New Brunswick actually - I'm from Presque Isle, Maine originally. :) That is a tough one as I am not familiar with Canada's licensure requirements to practice, or if/how they differ from that of the U.S. But regardless, I would say any program that you believe will be a good fit for you is just fine as long as they have the proper accreditation needed for licensure/you get a guarantee that their degree will allow you to become licensed to practice after graduation. A good strategy for this can be contacting past graduates of the program and seeing what they are up to now - If they are currently in counseling positions you are hoping to have in the future, then you're golden! Good luck with everything. :)
