Well that does it, the trilogy of “I’m done listening to new artists, oh wait Elliot mentioned someone and now they’re a new favorite” is finally complete. Holy cow this album is incredible! Weyes Blood Lemon Twigs and now this?!
There’s actually a tonne of great new music out there (well beyond the three albums I’ve mentioned!) Just gotta be curious and try as much as possible.
halfway through the video and I gotta stop to go and listen to this album myself. knew clairo from her original blow up back in 2017, but aside from a few songs i haven’t been the craziest about her sound, but after seeing all the praise this album has gotten, this video pushed me over the edge to listen to it.
I haven't had anything been sold to me well as you have just sold Clairo's new album ever since that video of the guy sitting on a street corner selling patato peelers. My days. The sounds in this video evoke feelings I haven't felt in a _while_, because I haven't been listening to any good new music for a while, or dealing with charm all that much... wow. Kudos to you and Clairo.
As a guitar teacher, I discovered this album after a few students brought it up in class and, while I do think a lot of the songs are quite similar, I was also pleased to find that kids now want to learn more than the same 4 Taylor Swift chords + capo. No hate on Taylor but it's vital in today's mainstream landscape to have harmonic and melodic variety. It just adds more colour to the world.
Normally I’m not one to comment on videos but I’m always deeply impressed by your uncanny ability to make any piece of music feel new and immediate, even when I’m very familiar with it. After watching this video and relistening to this album, it felt very close to hearing it for the first time again. I think your primary strength in music discussion is the way you convey the joy inherent in music creation and the process of crafting songs (as well as the listening experience). Even with somber stuff you really illuminate the power of songwriting to alleviate pain or sadness or listlessness. I think it’s very powerful. I’m currently revisiting Japanese Breakfast’s discography, and if you haven’t heard it already I highly recommend it. I feel like it’d be in your wheelhouse. Cheers!
I discovered Clairo's song (Sofia) just early this year (January, 2024) and I knew at that moment that I quickly vibed in the song. And then this year I got down by negative things/moments (Relationship problem and some others), iremember binge listening to her albums and as well as slowly discovering her old songs back then.and then out of nowhere she released her new Album this year and I just love it so much. Her songs most particularly her new album this year REALLY saved me from my negative things and I feel better now than what I was a couple of months ago. I'm so glad I discovered Her and her songs and yes I've been CHARMED by Clairo. -Rudy
I think I must’ve watched all of the reviews that have been made on this album up to now, and this one has to be the best! Thanks man, I too was charmed by Clairo
So much great new music out there! I hate it when people say there’s no good music out there, you just have to go searching for it!! That’s the fun part!
I only ever listened to clairo on spotify and never checked any socials or anything and then the album just dropped and I have been obsessed ever since
You don't really make videos about contemporary music so it's such a delight to me that this one is about Clairo. I've loved her for years. Haven't heard the new album yet but I've heard nothing but great things. 😊
You seriously raise the bar with your album reviews man. This is the level of attention and love a good album deserves. It's like a mini-documentary in the way it gives you all the necessary context to fully appreciate the album, whether that's right now or ten years down the road. I'm fully sold on this project after your descriptions and analysis. Amazing work as always Elliot!!
Was secretly hoping you'd do a video on this one. I listened to this album every single day for the whole month after it dropped, to the point where it now feels like a close friend. Excellent analysis and a brilliant video as ever!
Definitely charmed, to me it’s a great sound and hearing about her thought process in how she wants the sound to come across only makes it better. Downloaded. Oh you like Weyes Blood too? I think you might have great taste.
I love this video so much. I’m now even more of a clairo fan that I was before, which I didn’t know was possible. I’m also an Elliot fan now! I’m glad I came across this video ❤ keep it up dude, looking forward to your next one.
your editing, format, and explanation technique are all on point and work so well together in this video. Clairo and the music that she's made fundamentally changed my life for the better and I'm honored I'm going to be able to see her perform soon. Thank you for this great little video on her artistry and for teaching me a lot more about the singer behind the art C:!!!
I think it's a really great morning album, but i do think it's a little samey as the tracks go on. It's a cozy album fit for a particular mood and time.
Well, thanks for introducing me to Clairo and 'Charm' Elliot. Beautiful, laid back sounds that soothe the senses. I love how you still manage to get Paul McCartney into the video at 18:40! Nice revue, thanks. Looking forward to the BIG ONE!
I was actively a non-fan of Clairo’s music - I genuinely kind of hated it for multiple reasons - but this album absolutely blew me away. It has been going back and reconsidering her prior work, which I still don’t love but can sort of appreciate a bit more. Hopefully she further explores this new sonic direction!
As soon as I heard this record I knew it was one of the best to come out this year, so I was super disappointed to see the music world had mostly snubbed it. So glad you covered this Elliott!
this is my favorite non-rap album to come out this year, I listened to it back when it came out and it's never left my rotation. this and chromakopia are my favorites this year by far
Great video, fabulous musician! Maybe I'm off base, but If I may rant: this video having lower views than Elliot's typical ones is why I can't stand 'there's no good music anymore' arguments. Here is Elliot -- someone who the viewers ostensibly trust -- handing fans of 60s / 70s music a curated recommendation. And folks are skipping the video because it's not Beatles or another artist they recognize. I get it, but it's a little frustrating! 😅 Great music is getting made if you'll just seek it out (or in this case trust recommendations from people you like)
I've been charmed. I've only known some of her hits before, but there's just something about this album that really resonates with me as I mostly listen to 40s-70s music. It turned me into a Clairo stan. I'm also never really into a singer who doesn't sing past a certain decibel, but there's just something about her vocals that... idk? It's beautiful. Her music taste is impeccable too! I've been listening to her NTS playlist ever since I became a fan, which was a month ago.
Watched half the video this morning, listened to the album today while at school, and bought it on vinyl when I got home. So glad you made a video about this! (And yes, I finished it haha)
Great review. I love this album as well, and as a follower of your videos I was delighted _ yet not surprised - to find this review from you. Just really thoughtful readings of these songs - great job!
top tier review; this is the kinda thing that's important in a review. reviewers need to understand the art, yet most often they just rate it or compare it to a past piece. there's no objectivity in art.
"One of the key themes of this song of this album is intimacy and this charming effect only works as well as it does because Clairo sounds like she's singing only inches from you, and you are leaning in because it's something she only wants you to hear." Holy smokes you are right. I didn't think of it like that. That's why I liked it so much. Great review on her album.
I bought this LP at the same time as I did ‘A Dream is All We Know’ from Rocksteady in Melbourne, and they truly pare gorgeously together in the same universe - ‘…Dream…’ for the day, and ‘Charm’ for the night. Certainly the tape is a big part of it, but I love both regardless. Gorgeous.
Instant subscribe. I have yet to come across someone who has been able to articulate what has made this record, well, so charming to me. Loved all the other music referenced too, it’ll be fun to check all of those out. Keep the vids coming dude
I actually listened to this album because I saw Alice Phoebe Lou was her opener and I wanted to see Alice since she’s never been in my state before. I absolutely love it, and I can see her soul and funk influences. I want a version of Add Up My Love with a full gospel choir and runs. I’m so glad I get to go to a concert with two fantastic artists. I do suggest looking into Alice Phoebe Lou and Strong Boi as well
I’ve seen every one of your videos and don’t get me wrong I’m very much one of the Beatle people but I adore your videos on modern artists. Charm is one of my favorite albums of the last 10 years. Great video Elliot!
This is just enchanting. Your description of the party at the end definitely convinced me to go check this out as that is definitely more my vibe. Like, the louder/flashier stuff is fun at times, but even when I was a teen (long, long ago)...that was what I really wanted from a party, hehe. Artists like Simon & Garfunkel, AURORA and The Sundays definitely scratch that itch for me in various ways and I'm always happy to find another. I did really enjoy the Lemon Twigs after checking them out too!
Thanks for making this video! I discovered Clairo during the pandemic with Pretty Girl and Flaming Hot Cheetos, but for whatever reason she fell off my radar. I didnt even know she released a new album! I actually paused the video before you got into it to listen for myself, and I agree with everything you said. Now Ive been listening to it all week lmao. Her best work yet for sure!!
This album is by far my favorite album that’s come out this year and my 3rd favorite I’ve discovered (I listened to Igor and a French synthpop band for the first time this year)
9:35 this slightly reminds me of the iconic drum part in Alabama Shakes "Don't Wanna Fight". That's from a very '60s sounding, superb throughout, album "Sound & Color", by the way.
i hadn’t listened to Charm before i watched this but im already a big fan! two albums i’ve been really into recently that i’d definitely recommend if you haven’t heard them are Prelude To Ecstasy by The Last Dinner Party and Carrier Pidgeon by Odie Leigh!
So glad to see you talking about this album because it's pretty fantastic! I enjoyed the direction Clairo took on Sling, but didn't return to it as much. This one won me over on first listen! Love that she is leaning into this warm sophisti-pop sound. Might be my AOTY but I also have Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay and Fabiana Palladino's debut album up there too!! I actually recommend the last one which has flown under the radar this year. Fabiana's album is also sophisti-pop but more so with an 80s synthpop sound and her voice is amazing. An album that has a similar soft rock, neo psych sound to Charm is probably Luna Li's When A Thought Grows Wings, with Golden Hour and Fantasy as my fave songs in it. I also suggest Here in the Pitch by Jessica Pratt, kind of a short folk album but still moody and soft with a vintage sound. There's also Adrienne Lenker's Bright Future, which I have to revisit. That said, there are some albums i'm looking forward to from other singer/songwriters: Laura Marling's Patterns and Haley Heynderickx' Seed of A Seed. This year is packed lol.
love the recommendations! Showed the lemon twigs to my dad (an old pom who grew up on the beatles, and he liked them!) I will definitely be checking out clairo, but in the mean time, its completely different sonic soundscape but i think you might get a kick out of will wood, the whole journey of the artist and his battle with persona, brand, and external perceptions of self through music and now his sudden (albeit niche) cultural relevance
I would love to see you talking about Brian Eno i just discovered him and hes so underrated!! Considering how influential he might have been.Lovely video, have a great day :))
definitely my album of the year, super fun to hear you talking about it. personally juna sounds so much to me like ralfie pagan. latin soul is his whole thing; it’s congas with vibraphone man, it’s awesome. “No Soy De Tí” is pretty emblematic of his sound (and also just a good song)
"Babe, wake up! The guy who made that one video about Zelda just posted another banger!"
As a devoted (free) fan of Elliot Roberts I refuse to watch the Zelda video, it's tradition at this point
Ringo fans devastated
It’s always nice whenever Elliott posts a video praising a newer artist. He’s more than just the “Beatles guy”.
Biopics guy
Actually he is Zelda guy I totally agree with other comment on this
i love clairo’s new album, it’s been such a good year for music
Well that does it, the trilogy of “I’m done listening to new artists, oh wait Elliot mentioned someone and now they’re a new favorite” is finally complete. Holy cow this album is incredible! Weyes Blood Lemon Twigs and now this?!
There’s actually a tonne of great new music out there (well beyond the three albums I’ve mentioned!)
Just gotta be curious and try as much as possible.
Grace Bowers debut album which just came out has some real high points, it's called Wine on Venus and the title track is amazing
I’m a simple man, I watch every Elliot Roberts video
halfway through the video and I gotta stop to go and listen to this album myself. knew clairo from her original blow up back in 2017, but aside from a few songs i haven’t been the craziest about her sound, but after seeing all the praise this album has gotten, this video pushed me over the edge to listen to it.

you should listen to clairo’s live at electric lady. it’s more rock oriented but the performances are fantastic and the sound mix is second to none
Her mother has some really wonderful taste.
As a guitar teacher, I discovered this album after a few students brought it up in class and, while I do think a lot of the songs are quite similar, I was also pleased to find that kids now want to learn more than the same 4 Taylor Swift chords + capo. I’m happy your posting, I’m sad it’s not the Ringo video❤️
We won't forget, Elliot. Where's the Ringo video? 😂

Amazing work as always Elliot!!
I first heard her on the podcast Song Exploder. I’ll check this out. Pretty cool!
Was secretly hoping you'd do a video on this one. I listened to this album every single day for the whole month after it dropped, to the point where it now feels like a close friend. Excellent analysis and a brilliant video as ever!
I LOVE the albums production
Lush, organic. And her performance is so silky smooth.
Im so happy you’re branching out and talking about music from now. Awesome video
Definitely charmed, to me it’s a great sound and hearing about her thought process in how she wants the sound to come across only makes it better. Downloaded. Oh you like Weyes Blood too? I think you might have great taste.
Perfect timing, right after I heard my first Clairo song. It’s amazing how this guy always pulls through with exactly what I want to hear.
Would love to see you do a video on The Beths, Elliot. Really cool band from New Zealand with witty lyrics and a crunchy Beatles like poppy sound.
YES☝️
Great video Elliot! And a beautiful album, really liked your connections with Nillson and the Beach Boys!
I love this video so much. I’m now even more of a clairo fan that I was before, which I didn’t know was possible. I’m also an Elliot fan now! I’m glad I came across this video ❤ keep it up dude, looking forward to your next one.

These videos are just getting better ❤
This video is a fucking 10/10! Superb quality! 🤌🏼

Yay another Elliot Robert’s video! Unique music group. Posted at 12:51 am my time
first time here but such amazing video! the analysis that Charm deserved....
Lemon Twigs, Clairo - I think it's time for a Blossoms video next!!

First off, YAY NEW ELLIOT ROEBERTS VIDEO ON A COOL AS TOPIC
and second, we all know this is just him avoiding the ringo video
Awesome video, one of my favourite albums of the year
This album is by far my favorite album that’s come out this year and my 3rd favorite I’ve discovered (I listened to Igor and a French synthpop band for the first time this year)
This is such a great format for a video! I love the side by side comparisons of the tracks and the inspirations.
Wow, I've never heard of Clairo, that sounds so good! I wish more people would discover her!
This is my favourite video, EVER.
9:35 this slightly reminds me of the iconic drum part in Alabama Shakes "Don't Wanna Fight". That's from a very '60s sounding, superb throughout, album "Sound & Color", by the way.

I absolutely love the last dinner party album!!
great script and very entertaining editing, ty
Well done Elliott! I've been a Clairo fan for a couple years & own most of her albums. Still need to pick this one up. Sounds so good. 😊
It's mental, I was being Elliots videos all day and wondering when and what his next video would be about...
I mean well here we
very proud of myself for calling this on twitter lmao. love the "listen to this album" series! hoping for many more episodes ❤
I would just love a playlist made of all the musics of the video !
I love your recommendations
this album is everything
Those "Worst Person in the World" clips in the finale... WOW.
What a way to end the video. Loved it
This album is so captivating
great video man. keep it up!

Watched on Patreon and watching again here! Great video like always!
Elliott Smith mentioned!!!
I'm eagerly awaiting a vinyl record collection video.
Awesome review. I'm gonna listen to this album right now)
I would love to see you talking about Brian Eno i just discovered him and hes so underrated!! Considering how influential he might have been.Lovely video, have a great day :))
I’m pretty sure Brian Eno isn’t underrated.
Yo I know this is off topic but I can swear I just saw you in a specsavers commercial?!
Hey man just want to say I love your videos and they are so well made! Probably going to subscribe to your patreon!
Thank you so much!
Great video, charm is my favorite album of the year so far and it is way too overlooked
amazing video!
I’m not into clairo but I did like this album a lot-pier 4 makes me sob which is rare for me
definitely my album of the year, super fun to hear you talking about it. personally juna sounds so much to me like ralfie pagan. latin soul is his whole thing; it’s congas with vibraphone man, it’s awesome. “No Soy De Tí” is pretty emblematic of his sound (and also just a good song)
Perfect video, it, , Now i want to buy this on vinyl
nice specsavers ad!!
Haha! I was recommending this album by the Spotify robot and I thought Elliot Roberts should do this one, AND HERE IT IS!!!!
the album is beautiful is some many ways than one
