Life Lessons from Barbie Movie!

This weekend, I decided to take my mom and my daughter to watch Barbie and it was a fun day out for the three of us. Growing up as a girl, I spent a few of those years in Kerteh, Terengganu where toys were scarce and there were definitely no ipads! However, I had a few precious Barbies which kept me company and where I used my imagination to play with them! It was quite a big deal when my parents would buy me a Barbie doll and I remember the excitement of unboxing them.
So I decided to find out more about this world's most popular doll and discovered that Barbie was created by Ruth Handler and was named after her daughter, Barbara. Ruth decided to create a three-dimensional doll when she saw her daughter playing with paper dolls, pretending they were students, cheerleaders and career women.
To date, Barbie has had over 250 inspirational careers including being a pilot, firefighter, journalist and an entrepreneur to name a few. In 1965, 13 years before women were admitted at NASA, Mattel introduced an astronaut Barbie. Barbie also became a surgeon in 1973 when less than 10% of doctors were women.Mattel has also made a Barbie for President doll for every election year since 1992,
Barbie is not without its fair share of controversies and does have critics because of its unrealistic figure,etc. To address this, Mattel had released versions with different body types, skin tones and hair styles. In 1997, they debuted the first fashion doll to come with a wheelchair.
Now coming back to the movie, it is directed by Greta Gerwig who has directed 2 critically acclaimed films, namely Lady Bird and Little Women. She was also nominated for Best Director in the Academy Awards, making her the 5th woman to ever be nominated. She is the ideal director because she brings passion and sensitivity to the exploration of women's issues.
Another great thing about the movie is the amazing song "What Was I Made For" which was written and sung by Billie Eilish.
