The sich rifles were also a unit in the army of the west Ukrainian republic, a famous ine is basil the embroided or vasyl the red prince von habsburg who almost became King of Ukraine!

This march is for sure dedicated first and foremost to Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, as it consists of melodies of their songs: Ой, на горі на Маківці (Hey there on the Makivka hill) and Повіяв віер степовий (The wind from steppes began to blow).

The Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen was voluntary, but absolutely regular field unit of Austro-Hungarian Army, with regular army uniforms and duties (by no means was it a kind of paramilitary or auxillary organization!). For Ukrainians, it was thought to be the cadre for the future Ukrainian army, and its aim was liberation of Ukrainians from Russian Imperial oppression and creation of Ukrainian independent state (and not the bare service in Austrian army).
