I lived in a house built in 1858 as well! It was surprising how similar the building style was. And you are correct, It's obvious that the house was ,understandably, renovated as the times changed. That's not hard to figure out. Great video!!!
I have seen old homes with the doors like you saw here. Many of them were built in the house to send the casket out of the house when they held the funerals in the homes. They thought it was bad to allow the dead to go through the doors the living used and no one ever walked through that door. The coffin was passed through to those outside. That is why it is up off the ground a little with no steps to it.
Interesting!
Thats very interesting. They must've had enough funerals to make that a thing. Thank you for this info!
I bet at one time this BEAUTIFUL OLD HOME was full of LIFE and SINGING!!!! So VERY SAD to see decay like that. And you're seeing more and more of it as time progresses!!!! JUST HEART WRENCHING!!!! And Ashville, I wish I had the money to restore it too!
I really enjoyed seeing the inside, it was nice to see that it was not vandalize. That home would be so beautiful to be restore, can't believe how many bathrooms it had.
I love your all's accents. Being an Alabama girl, it is nice to be able to understand what you are saying. LOL Great video.
Georgia girl here. I love the southern accent!
What a gorgeous room at 54. And those lovely piano's. Great explore!
Awesome House! Great to see the high ceilings, architectural details, beautiful wood floors, etc. Was surprised that the old hand plastered walls looked so intact, even though you could see old repairs. Someone should buy and restore this before it's too late! Thanks for the tour!
We are restoring a 1863 house way worst shape than that looked...
It is a undertaking of indescribable effort. We love are old home every inch of it..
I love how the firesplaces and the closet built-ins r color coordinated. Very well done
What an amazing house still in beautiful shape to be as old as it is. Thank You !!!
Hard to believe this home is pre-Civil War! Very well done and three pianos inside. Would be interesting to know the history and people that lived there. Wonderful that there is NO graffiti!
If their was a career young people should consider, perhaps it should be historic preservation. After cleaning houses for ten years, I feel if a house was sturdy enough to last 100 years, if renovated, perhaps it can last 100 more years. Sometimes the house is a total gut job. However if the shell is good and the roof and windows can be fixed or replaced, their is hope. Renovating old houses is less debris and pollution in the land fill. Rarely, is it a hopeless case to renovate. We have so many people needing jobs and homes. Renovating these places should be a priority for every state and local government. Good luck.
This place is just stunning!!! The state should restore it this has to history to it!!! Love it
What a beautiful house !! I wish I had the money to buy it and restore it . Thanks for another great video.
Asheville Barb--Actually, there are federal grants available as well as low-interest loans for people to restore these old homes. In the early 1970s, these funds were well-advertised and, as interest rates and prices of homes skyrocketed in those inflationary years, these restoration grants became one of the ways the Baby Boomers could afford to purchase a home. www.achp.gov/funding-comm-housing.html
One MercilessMing Bookmarked, thanks!!! (love your name)
babalon 777--You're quite welcome. Decades ago, I was teaching when a campy movie about Flash Gordon was popular. I was part of a team of five teachers who were teaching a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes in a small school district at the time. All five of us were adamant that these kids put forth their best effort in our classes. The kids honored me with that nickname because I was ruthless about good grammar, spelling, and syntax and very chary about handing out A's that weren't earned. One of them said I was as merciless as Ming, and the nickname stuck. They were good kids and, out of that class, every single on of them went on to college and had rather successful lives. The following year, that district went bankrupt and all five of us were let go in the RIF (Reduction in Force). I still hear from that class even today.
That's awesome, we need a lot more teachers like you! Don't you get sick reading UA-cam comments? It sucks your district closed, but you're welcome to correct my grammer any time you want.
I think I know that movie, it looks amazing in black and white. Isn't there an episode of Voyager where some of the crew are playing it out in the holodeck? It was black and white, really trippy and cool.
Asheville Barb me too
This is a great video, thank you for the tour. I love those old softwood floors and fireplaces in every room. What a terrible shame to just let it fall down. At this point it could still be saved and as old as it is it should be saved. When they're gone. they're gone forever!
Another gem of a find ~ thanks for taking us along :) ~ bet you could "feel" the history !
Love this house. Thanks for taking us on this journey.
You do a really great video! Thanks for taking your time with the panning & for showing the details!
Beautiful home--someone should restore that place!
reminds me a lot of the civil war house in Lexington, Mo. It went back and fourth as a hospital for the north and south.
Great video, someone should hurry & save this ole place !
Gina Diefenbach
If I won the lottery I'd take it love the antique pianos and love to play them too
Plus after I'd won the lottery and got the place I'd fix it back up to original content and condition
Skinny and dumb side. Yawll braver than me
A really nice video Jon! What a beautiful property. So sad to see it go to ruin. Lovely to see this property in daylight. Well done!
I love this home omg!! I hope someone will buy it because it’s in pretty decent condition. No lie a lot of work & money needs to be put into it, but it’s stunning. And if it’s pre civil war It should be considered a historical location/home. Man the old light the basement just beautiful! I love the old floors, and each room is pretty large. Were you able to explore into each room and floor!? It looks huge from the looks of it (outside) but looks can be deceiving. Absolutely 👍🏻👍🏻 on this video love it, well done. Can’t believe there was 3, I think pianos in that place! Ty Jon, re watching lots of videos etc here and there. Wasn’t sure if I had previously seen us upload, since YT is in the habit of taking away all my liked videos etc, argh! Hope your week is going well, hugs to u and your girls! 😁👍🏻🤟🏻💜
In the first room that you entered off the foyer.....I had that same exact wallpaper in my bedroom as a child. That is fascinating.
Angelina, the wallpaper u refer to is not contemporary with the house but closer in style to the 1970s.
I hope someone restores this one. Gorgeous home. Thank you.
What a cool mansion! It's a part of history and it would be really neat if it was restored and turned into a museum or an official historic site. You just don't see buildings like this anymore.
It is so sad how people come in and destroy the places especially kids I remember remodeling those older home and painting them and you'd be amazed have stuff that be left behind I like people that died or they got kicked out but I had found some really old stuff and I kept some of the things and then I sold some of the things and most the stuff in the trash but let me tell you something those homes are so beautiful just the way the walls or shave just the way the trim is shaped they are very beautiful is like mansions to the poor but sure is not nice it's a lot of work but I enjoyed Painting and Remodeling those home and turn them into brand new homes
Angela Ness : how fortunate you were to do work that you enjoyed the result.
All things concidered, it still is in good condition, eg: no graffiti, nice to see 👍🏼
Someone did renovations. Closets and bathrooms? Such a shame to see this house laid to waste. My dream, my passion is old architecture.
Check the courthouse for owners; if taxes are due, they might sell it cheap. If not you might get at a sherrif's sale later on.
Hey that Jacob Brothers Upright is an antique and worth quite a bit of money. If restored around $25K.
That house is the real deal. back when they built things to last. plaster walls and ceilings and expensive wall paper. hand crafted woodwork. It's over a hundred years older than the other mansion. and looks to be in better condition.
Notice how every old house video located in the south is labeled "plantation?" I'm starting to think people don't have a clue what a plantation is.
Sebastien Sade This was definitely not a common house!
@@flaminglaughter That does not make it the previous home of a large farm worked by slaves.
The old radiators were quite a modernization from heating every room with wood, which had to be cut, carried, stored and fed into the fire all day and evening then banked at bedtime. Major work.
One of my favorites so far. Thank you.
Amazing home! It deserves to be restored and lived in, too beautiful to decay
What a lovely find ! That basement would have scared me to death.
Oh it makes me so mad that these beautiful houses are let go.
Love it! You can feel the spirit of the house.
My grandparent's home was built in 1777. It's located on Long Island, NY. It was built by the Overtons. It is known as the "Overton house" and is a historical landmark. George Washington rode down the main road on horseback, where the house is located. There are original hardwood floors in the home. The architecture in their home, you do not see anymore. It's truly a beautiful home.
john u always find the most interesting places to explore. keep em coming. GOD bless
great video, as always. I'm pretty sure I'd live there. although, I'd probably have something done to the basement, first. it was extremely creepy.
my favorite part of the house is this too glass doors that you can open on to the left and to the right those are awesome I think that's like the dining room that has the two glass doors those are so cool
it looks like it could still be liveable with a little TLC 😁 outside of Madison Wisconsin there is a 1850 farmstead still standing Made of Stone that's abandoned :-(
amy koehler dang it! I went up to Duluth a few years ago and I'm pretty sure we went through Madison. I would have loved to see that!!
Amy's melanoma journey H I'm from WI. Be in Burlington in two weeks. LOL
Amy's melanoma journey Except the house likely doesn’t have one bit of insulation.
I've been to this house, my friends and I used to go at night and get so scared! We called it the Flanigan house because that's what road it's on
Thank you for sharing this tour. Great old house. The outside bathroom was for the help. 12' ceilings to help keep the house cool, along with floor to ceiling windows in some of the rooms. That size boiler would have been inefficient for heating the house but with the fireplaces would have been better. Really too bad someone can't buy it and restore it. It's got great bones still.
At-3:56- The steps led to 'somewhere' at one time. George Washington s home has a back stair case something like that- He used it to go from his downstairs study & went to his up stairs bed room.
Oh, the Preston home. I know where that is. Thanks for the tour, John.
Hildy K. this isn't a Preston home. It's close though.
Isn't it near what used to be called Elza Gate in Oak Ridge?
Hildy K. No this is in Virginia
Shayla Nicole Whiteman 95 wtf rude much, psycho bitch
I hope someone saves this place! Those floors are amazing. Beautiful house.
Thank you for the History Lesson on such a magnificent structure The Prestons were Quite the Patriots and surveyors in the area "The John Preston House was the second house built on the Walnut Grove
Plantation in western Washington County, Virginia. It is a brick
masonry structure that has four thousand five hundred square feet of
finished space and is located on an acre and half of land. It sits
along the Lee Highway directly outside the current city limits of
Bristol, Virginia. The style of the building is a transition between
Greek Revival and Italianate." Very Nice ty for the Share!
Thank you so much for the history i couldn't find much on it so thanks for sharing.
Exploration Unknown I really love your work!
Thank you so much.
Elisabeth Kelley Wow TY for the great information!
who is we?????
Great video. I love the old door knobs.
Hi 👋 Jon. I love 💕 this 1858 house. I'm so happy it's in really great condition. The hardwood floors are beautiful. Dusty, but beautiful 🌹
Lots of house are beautiful but have to much dust
Notice that in the medicine cabinets there are slits in the back panel, that was a place to dispose of your used razor blades from the old double edged razors with the screw tip handle.
The weird window that looks like a doorway, is because back in the 1800's, there was a superstition about removing a dead body through a door, so houses back then had extremely large floor to ceiling windows or at least one!! I was told this by someone who owned and researched their pre- twentieth century Victorian mansion home!! This house is in amazing condition and should be restored, you ought to contact the historical society in your area and see what can be done to save it!!!
The old boiler was right behind you and visible just to the right as you passed the hot water heater. The boilers in that time were made of brick. That furnace you were looking at was much newer than the house and added later. Could you imagine having to keep all those fire places going and run down to the basement to keep the boiler stoked as well.
Ty for the tour.
My favorite about this house?
The ceiling to floor windows!
I paint old Victorians in Richmond. I saw the 2 bags of Durabond 90 at the top of the basement stairs, my boss would move me right in there. This is a Confederate 4 x 4. Absolute classic. In it is in great shape. Those wood floors. 12" plank heart pine. The crapper outside for the workers to use. Great vid, my favorite so far.
love love old homes thank you
In those days there were separate stairways for service like maids and butlers to do their job without disturbing the masters, that explains the two sets of stairs. Even nowadays there are big houses functioning that way
Mauricio Corona my father and stepmother lived in such a house in Jackson, TN. We called it "The Manse." it was the most beautiful house I'd ever seen, even more so because she had it professionally decorated.
Wow!! Wondeful!! 😃
+pearl louise Built in 1858 maybe had slaves maybe not.If it did it wasn't for long, and nobody cares.
Many large houses have two sets of stairs for obvious reasons.
Thanks for sharing this history. I enjoy your videos. God bless.
It's nice not to see the Vandals turn it up and spray painting all over it an amazing find
Did I just see a window that goes to the floor???? Love those !!! This is a beauty !
That was a nice home wish they made quality like that with high ceilings and floor to ceiling windows the rooms were so large wow thanks!!!!
What a huge house, amazing that those pianos are still in good condition, unless this house is in an isolated area
They just don't make houses like that anymore. They had such charm. I love the wood floors. It's a shame they are left to die.
beautiful still, tyvm for posting
very solid old house very restorable.
This had to have been a fabulous home!
I would so love to buy this home. Thanks for the video.
At 3:35, before you walked up to that long, strange window, I thought it was a door that had been left open. Gorgeous home
Jon, Love and want to see many of your vids, but end out giving up, as I get so nauseated because you go around way too fast and don't let the camera (and my eyes) focus on something before you yank it off and move on. You would gain a lot more viewers/subscribers from slowing down, I am sure it is not only me who finds it uncomfortable... Thanks! :)
Im working on improving my camera skills thanks.
Sad someone isn't restoring this.
The house may have been built in stages. The parts with the oldest timbers in the basement/crawlspace (towards the end of your film) might have been original 1858, while the larger house where you spent most of the time would have been built in the late 1800s or even earlier 1900s. Clearly seriously remodeled sometime in the 1950s or 70s. Next time focus on details like door molding, floors, and corner support beams, windows, etc. to indicate date of construction. One of the support beams from the basement supported by lolly columns looks to have dated from 1858. Mortise and Tendon construction for corner posts would also confirm age. Interesting video. (I lived in a house dated from 1824 and sure enough when we remodeled, the large corner support beams were mortise and tendon.)
"If that doll moves her head or closes her eyes, I'm OUT OF HERE!" That's a RIOT!!!!
You made the comment Why do people put rocks on the headstones. It is a old Jewish tradition. It is to keep the spirits from rising.
A truly unique build place. .thanks for showing
I really like your video. Keep on making the great videos. Thank you 😊
Beautiful house I ĺovè the blue color in it also I love mantels and fireplaces.
That square grand piano is a rare find.
Sandra Stone I respectfully must disagree, there are numerous square grands around, two in this house (the one on it's side is also a square grand). I have encountered them repeatedly in my travels, before that I also used to think they were rare, and was considering taking one that a client offered me. What is rare, is to find a well restored one. Many piano experts will not work with them and this can make them very expensive to restore. Even with restoration, the sound is not the same as a regular piano and not even close to the richness of a grand. I have kind of a love/hate relationship with them, but unrest or unrestored ones are a dime a dozen.
+Kaa there were a lot of piano's which was funny "really"!
That house had a lot of fireplaces. WOW!!!
That crystal thing u called a harlots jewel was actually a piece off of the chandilier in the house I think ..(pretty sure). The red candle wax is probably from kids that didn,t have a flash light and light a candle they found and used it to see the house. Boy that would be scary at night with a candle , or they used it with the pentagram.ugg...who knows..awesome house sitting and molding away.Keep them coming good job..
Haha love the intro coming from somewhere 😂 what an amazing place.
LOL I promised to not give out the location and I had to catch myself lol,
Can we go out
Beautiful place! Thanks for sharing!
My grandmother lived in an old plantation house for 20 years. This house is in good condition. Great video and brought back some wonderful memories:)
Thank You for your commitment I don't do that remodeling anymore I wish but my strength isn't what used to have when I was in my 20s now I am in my 40s but I sure miss painting them homes I love homes like that hey if you like going ghost hunting I have one of those ghost boxes on my phone and it really works you mite want to get it but you would have to tran your ears to hear them But I am not trying to freak you out the ghost box is called Sono X12 ghost box but if you get scared it mite not be a good thing for you

Aaaaaah! Another beautiful home left to rot. Now THAT is scary! If that doll had moved I'd wet my pants, lol. You may have done worse. :) Blessings
Outstanding House ❤️ Thank you for history saved Jon
The PVC electric conduit to the left of front door is at least 10 years old. There were people in there, at most, 5 years ago.
Beautiful house, wow!
Awesome old house John. 🇦🇺
😮 9:39 We had the same robot in our house a little while ago. Strange bloody thing 😂 my grand daughter loved it though 😝
That mansion was far from it's heyday. The kitchen and bath had been remodeled, probably in the 20's. It was definitely built before electricity, as the wiring had been added later.
Must have been beautiful in its time. Could be again if renovated. Thanks !
What a place. i can't believe it's sitting empty rotting away what a waste. the old high skirting board's and old sash windows.
Such a beautiful house! Great video, guys!
The piano on it’s side was rosewood, very valuable.
If you want to see what that house looked like in its day, a house in ashevile called the smith-mcdowell is the same era. and can be visited. thanks for all your hard.
I love this mansion.. I watched when you and Tim from breaking the shell was in here... So gorgeous!!
Love your videos! That house was really nice!
This home has some strong bones to it. It would be neat if someone fixed it up just the way it is. Don't knock down any walls. All those fireplaces were beautiful. Every bedroom was different. My wish would be for someone to bring this home back to its glory days.
THAT is a Beautiful old house I would love love love a old home like that..why is it just sitting there just rotting away? Who ever owns that home needs to do some repairs before it gets to far gone. I wish I could go to that home and just walk around and see it.. I imagine the family's that use to live in the old homes and think of how times has changed so much...oh well what can you do about it...nothing...have a blessed day and stay safe..luv ur videos
Amazing old place you found there. Hope someine saves it. Thankyou for sharing.
