Enjoyed that :) I played F-29, TFX, EF2000 and Wargasm back in my PC gaming days and ended up working for Evolution as an artist on the first two MotorStorm games around ten years later. Martin's a great MD and he's got an uncanny knack of having both solid game concepts and surrounding himself with ginromous game-dev brains, a lot of my ex-colleagues came from DiD. Simultaneously nostalgic and proud. :)

Wonderful video, thank you. I have to say, even now - playing flight sim's such as Ace Combat (arcade style with amazing graphics) on a big 4K TV doesn't come close to giving me the level of excitement that EF2000 did when playing over Wireplay from Birmingham with a 56k modem with teammates in New York on a 22" CRT display with perhaps 8-16 MB of RAM.
How times have changed. I miss you DID. I read every single page of the EF2000 manual, then turned up at airshows as a skinny teenager and talked to real RAF pilots who hadn't seen the EF2000 sim' and wondered how on earth a young lad knew quite so much about it. Only on getting the manual out of my rucksack, I was able to show them quite how much knowledge was public domain.
That's made my Friday morning remembering all of that from this video. Thanks again!

Yes, the EF/F22 era was the apex of flight sim games. The new stuff, like Lock-On, is visually better, but you need an awfully fast PC to run it decently. BTW, 22" is really big for a CRT; I had 17" back then, and that was already above average. Many users still had 14 or 15.
The funny thing about the manual is that the military manuals are the same size and shape as the EF2000 manuals shown at 07:13.

tfx and ef 2000 were the closest thing to the real millions of dollars flight simulators at the time, and i must have had at least 1000 hours in these games
if not way more. And what i can remember is that i had a 1mb GPU, and tfx came in a large heavy box with a manualas thick as a phonebook
and about 12 floppydisks and took and entire day to install the game that took 100mb harddisk space on my 486 dx2 66mhz pc.
Later i bought wing commander, a space game, and for that i needed a bigger GPU, so i swapped my 1mb for a 2mb GPU!
Well that was over 25 years ago now, so time did fly by alright.

DID were such a 90's thing! TFX was more an 'experience' than a game for me. It ran like a dog on my PC and I was awful at it, but it was just awesome to look at and listen too. EF2000 was just a great flight sim with a pleasing British take to it, and Wargasm... well it had a certain charm! Good times.

Easily the best produced and narrated retrogame company video on UA-cam. It is not an easy job to tell us the DID story and highlights in 10 minutes, but you pulled it off remarkably. Appreciate the research and effort you put into making this video on Digital Image Design. UK game development at its best! RetroManCave, you are THE man! They should pick up where they left because i liked tfx and EF2000 very much and played those games for hundreds of hours,
so imagine what they could do with the tech of today. They could make the best combat flight sim that could stand the test of time for at least
an entire decade. Now i tried this free version of DCS, but don't like it a bit, because the graphics look outdated and the planes react like shit
and the weapons systems hardly work, and the keayboard layout makes no sense, so i wish a 2021 version of TFX and/or EF2000 would come out.

F-22 was so cool and high fidelity. Though I was ignorant of the whole stealth concept and used my radar all of the time. I learned, after getting my but handed to me, that turning on your radar is equivalent to hanging a neon sign on your plane.. regardless of how stealthy. So I'm in a mission and get blasted in short order. I complain from the desk just outside of our living room that I had already been shot down. My wife said, "That's kind of hard in a stealth fighter, isn't it?" 😂

+NumosG hi and thank you, this was an early video when I was still finding my pace and presentation style (which I still am) so it's quite different to my newer videos. I'd like to cover another software house soon if you have any requests let me know

Check out the weird PS1 port of TFX, only released in Japan. Its fully in English so totally playable if you import a copy.

Any old enough to remember when Wargasm was released it was to be part of TAW and DIDs Air and Ground engine - can’t remember it’s name, like it is 29 years ago that I got EF2000

Good memories. Thank you for reminding. Not sure why google only just showed me this video existed when I’m subscribed but hey ho.
Loved F29 on the Amiga and still have my original. 3rd most played Amiga game after dungeon master then Falcon. And only beaten by Skyrim/fallout 4 &3. I loved the arcade approach having played Falcon F16 to death. Always enjoyed their games although the realism of the later releases was not appreciated as much as I never had the time to spend on them due to work.
Again thank you for another great video. Happy Christmas

EF2000 supported two early 3D virtual reality goggles too one them the Forte VFX1
and virtual i/o glasses though they had low resolution like lower than even 320 by 240 pixels whereas the regular game could be played on a great looking 640 by 480 pixel resolutions on a CRT monitor.
Here is a UA-cam video link on the Forte helmet

Good God, Retaliator and Epic were very poor games at the time they were released. As for the supposed "fast frame rate", this was achieved by having a ridiculously short draw distance, with objects popping into existence right in front of the player. The landscapes were barren and there was little sense of momentum - and no sense at all that you were flying an aircraft, unlike F18 Interceptor, where you could feel wind resistance and your aircraft being buffeted by cross-winds.

Can someone help me out with Wargasm? The game does run in Windows 10 but only runs in windowed mode at 640x480 so it's a tiny window in the corner of the screen. Anyone know how to get it to run fullscreen?

Is it the original release or a GOG.COM repackaging? Apparantly setting the compatability mode properties of tank.exe to Win98 mode is a known fix for this on XP. Might be worth a try.

It's a cd image I got off an abandonware site that included the patch. Nothing I tried works, I think the problem is that I can't save the config settings.

    • @ramet5
      @ramet5 6 років тому +1

I am fairly sure I wrote the installer for that game back in 1998 (when I was at DiD). My memory is a bit hazy (it was the 90s), but this might work:
Back then we wrote a small config text file (can't remember the name) that should be in the Wargasm directory in 'Program Files'. From about Vista onwards Microsoft discouraged developers writing data into the Program Files directory.
So to fix this, try running the game in Windows Administrator mode, that should provide it with the rights to write the config file out.
Or run notepad in admin mode and try editing the config file in the Program Files directory. There are some compatibility modes in Windows that might be worth trying with it too.
      Hope that works.
