Great video with so much info!! Love these types of videos too 😊 and yes for talking about this, choosing to sing in a whisper like quality can change the way a song is perceived. It brings something else. I love when a singer picks and chooses what quality they want and where. If the whisper quality is a default then that’s a difference. It’s being aware of these different qualities I think is important 😊

What's interesting with this is Jessica Simpson complained that her label didn't like the way she belted out her song in the 2000's - they wanted her to go in and 'whisper sing' it because they thought it made it easier for audiences to sing along. Meanwhile, Mariah Carey was saying she's always 'playing with her voice' and sound. She said she was singing softly and breathy because it required more control as a skill.
I find when I "whisper sing" I have to concentrate on control a lot more, rather than when I belt a song with my true chest voice. I spent all last summer with my vocal coach trying to get rid of my natural distorted voice, because I wanted lighter songs to sound smoother (for want of a better word). By the end of it, I learned to love the fact I am quite distorted when I sing. I just realised I went completely off the point there. Sorry. My point is, I find I have to control more when I whisper sing. (maybe it's because I'm male... Maybe not, I don't know)
That's interesting :) It can vary for different singers depending on what they're using their voice for the most. In my case, I used to have a really solid and good mix, because I did a lot of classical singing and got a good head voice. Then I lost my top range when I for years worked only with a band doing loud gigs with poor listening conditions, and didn't really work on my technique. So I had to work to get it back, and I'm still not where I was. I'm glad you've embraced your distortion - I like a distorted voice tbh :) as long as it's healthy, you're good.
Your voice sounds quite interesting. I would love to hear your naturally distorted doing belts. And as for whisper singing, I'm able to do it and I'm able to belt. However, the sound changes in my vocal range. For C2 - F#4 (sometimes G4) has mostly the same tone and A4 -G5 get more of a heady mix the more I go up my range. I'm a male and I'm likely not able to do what you can do with your voice. I struggle with adding distortion to my voice. I would like to be able to sing rock with a distorted sound but I'm not capable. Anyways, all this is to say that we all have a different sound and ways our voice allows us to sing. And I think I would like your sound.
YES!! I've always said that just because a certain singer may not sound like someone like Whitney for example, it DOESN'T mean that they "can't sing". yes, she's the standard but that's still not fair to say that they "can't sing" just cause they don't sound like her cause everyone's voice is unique to them for a reason. I've always had a different ear in that way. theres alot of singers that most people say "can't sing" that I personally think CAN sing very well. very rarely have I heard a popular/mainstream singer who's voice I didn't like. VERY rarely. but I love this video and the entire breakdown. you're such a vibe😌💜🤞🏽

Yes, all voices are unique :) But when it comes to singers, some work on their vocal technique and some don't, which ultimately leads to different skillsets and different qualities in the art they produce.
Hello Hege, I have found your reaction deeply interesting and very instructive. As you said, whispery or airy singing is indeed a choice in particular for very very talented vocalists such as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston as well as they could be more chesty. Two very good examples of what you demonstrated in your video are two Mariah Carey's songs : "Can't let go" and "Butterfly". In both songs, she used the whispery sound and the chesty one in order to embelish and emphasize certain parts of her songs which is so much difficult to replicate. As I often said, singing is not all about shouting or yelling words to prove to the world that the singer is the greatest of all time ! I will not mention any name in order to bash nobody because a lot of people try to convince themselves that their "idol" is the greatest of all : NO WAY ! And the final comment of my thought is the following one : one of the best if not the best example is Barbra Streisand's vocals. She is known for being called the "mother of divas" for a good reason. In all of her songs, she is able to transition from very soft to very powerful vocals without any tension or distorsion.
So happy you found it interesting :). And yes, that's an important aspect of it too - choosing different sounds to emphasize different emotions or vibes even within a song. There really is a difference between singers who can change between these different qualities and those who are limited to just "one mode". Thank you so much for watching, and sharing your input. Have a good weekend! :)
This reminds me…belting Musical Theatre and Operatic style singers like Al Jolson and Billy Murray used to critique the “Crooners” (in the 1920’s and 1930’s) for this same reason; they were annoyed with new crooners like Bing Crosby, because they believed crooners weren’t real singers. This is because the “belters” of that era did not utilize the microphone like the crooners did, who were using it more as an instrument instead of merely as a recording device. To give credit where credit is due, the “belters” trained their voices to be able to project and reach the back seats of any New York Theater WITHOUT the aid of the microphone. But they thought that that crooners were cheating when aided by the technology in a way that covered up for their flaws or what they perceived as a lack of vocal projection. Crooners revolutionized recorded singing with the close-up utilization of the Ribbon Microphone 100 years ago. This introduced an intimate singing style. Listen to this Bing Crosby “White Christmas” (1942 version). Very intimate and “whispery.” ua-cam.com/video/QQyy8SpDpTY/v-deo.html History repeats. If technology ever breaks down, the belters will be the kings and queens of the heap, again.
Whisper singing is a hard technique to master and very skilled singers that i love use them as well. However, my issue is singing the whole song in a whisper voice instead of having variations or switches throughout the song, making it more dynamic. I know they're a talented singer, but when the whole song is whisper, I feel nothing or could even make out the lyrics sometimes. Like i love My All by Mariah, first half is all whisper, then belting, then whisper again at the end. Same as Olivia Rodrigo being able to do a smooth transition in Driver license. My problem isn't with the skill, it's the choice of some artists to only having one vocal for the whole song. I get that it's the trend right now, some artists that don't have whisper vocals before are transitioning to full whisper cause of it, making a lot of new songs not my cup of tea.
Tom Jones did an album years ago that was duets with some of the young pop singers who were popular at the time. The interesting thing was that the only one who could keep up with him was Steve Page from a band called The Barenaked Ladies, technique and volume. It was obvious the others had their mikes cranked up and autotune made its appearance. It really showed the difference in technical ability. Mind you, ability and technique aren't everything and there are many singers who aren't exactly adept but still make amazing music by recognizing and staying within their limits. I like singers and musicians - I should probably say singers and instrumentalists - who are all over the spectrum with respect to their abilities. There are also some artists - more in the realm of instrumentalists, but some singers as well - for whom technical ability is everything and they leave me cold. Musicality trumps technical know-how every time.
I really like whisper singing to an extent. I just really hate how nowadays there’s a big uprise in softer whispery singing throughout the whole track. I think that’s why I love older music more, each song has dynamic range. @@michaelreyes2630 That's a very good point about dynamics. I hadn't thought about that! Sure a "flat" sounding production is a choice too and great for its purpose, but when the majority of charting pop songs sound like that it does indeed get boring.

@@HegeOfficial i guess the big disagreement would be , while a great vocalist could use whisper singing here and there, as another tool in their arsenal, they dont JUST whisper sing, like say billie eilish, or the like. They cannot sing when not whisper singing, which i refer to as spoken word , not singing. Its like whisper singing is someone saying, " if you cant hear me sing, then i cant be singing badly" SO i guess its like a baseball pitcher, whisper singing is a straight slow pitch , anyone can throw it, some can throw it really well, but the real pitchers, also throw, a curveball, a slider, a knuckleball, a fastball etc.If i could put out a bumper sticker, it would say, "if you cant sing, just whisper!,"
I understand your point, what I don’t see is how you think I’m disagreeing with you in this video? Cause I’m very well aware of the technical differences, and the point I’m making in the video is not that whisper singers can sing, but that there are singers deemed «whisper singers» who actually can.
So where does Billy Eilish come into this "whisper singer" category. I feel like she is the top artists right now who has that haunting dynamic with a breathy singing.
Céline Dion, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston are the best. No woman singer today can come close. I find that annoying.... I'm sure there is some unknown person out there with just as much talent who isn't being noticed for one reason or another...
Yeah, my point here tho is that neither Mariah nor Brandy are "only" whisper singers and that singers aren't necessarily limited to what you hear on their records.
@@Yourbeautiful666 Even as a part of a song? Like f.ex. in the intro of "When you believe" by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston? Both singers who we know can belt and carry big songs.
@@HegeOfficial then i missed that and my apologies, we agree.
So where does Billy Eilish come into this "whisper singer" category. I feel like she is the top artists right now who has that haunting dynamic with a breathy singing.
I would like you to react to kelis. Oxox
ooh :) nice recommendation! Do you have any specific performance in mind? Thank you
@@HegeOfficial maybe this one ua-cam.com/video/scs_VUMYZOs/v-deo.html
Céline Dion, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston are the best. No woman singer today can come close. I find that annoying.... I'm sure there is some unknown person out there with just as much talent who isn't being noticed for one reason or another...
There is no such a thing as whisper singer you supposed to have all of it to be a complete singer
And here we’re discussing what it is and why people are called whisper singers, not defending the term.
brandy and mariah are great whisper singers, selena is not
Yeah, my point here tho is that neither Mariah nor Brandy are "only" whisper singers and that singers aren't necessarily limited to what you hear on their records.
Yeah I am first like
Haha thank you!! :) I appreciate that
Whisper singing is bad
@@Yourbeautiful666 Even as a part of a song? Like f.ex. in the intro of "When you believe" by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston? Both singers who we know can belt and carry big songs. Is it still "bad" to you when they use "whisper singing" as an effect? Cause in this video we talk about that difference too, stylistic choices vs skills. The whole point is that not all whisper singing is the same.
