  • A tour of BC Ferries' MV Kuper. Built in Bullfrog Utah in 1985 as the John Atlantic Burr, she served the route between Bullfrog and Halls Crossing on Lake Powell, Utah she served the route along with her sister ship, the Charles Hall for 20 years. In 1996, the vessel was lengthened increasing capacity. The vessels were designed by Marine Design Associates and are actually a newer version of the 'K' Class design used for 5 Ferries in BC built between 1972 and 1975. In 2005, the John Atlantic Burr was bought by BC Ferries. Afterwards, the vessel was cut into pieces and transported to Allied Shipyards in North Vancouver, where the vessel was substantially lengthened and rebuilt. Among the changes were a new overhead bridge for better visibility, a fourth lane was added to the vessel increasing vehicle capacity from 26 to 32, the vessel's passenger and crew areas were also rebuilt completely, new safety equipment was installed to bring her up to standards, and she was re-engined. In a sense, the vessel was practically brand new, despite being 21 years old. The vessel was launched on November 3rd, 2006 and re-christened as MV Kuper. After sea trials and an open house, she entered service on Route 20 between Chemainus, Thetis Island, and Penelakut Island (formerly known as Kuper Island) Coincidentally, the date she entered service, March 31st 2007 was also the first day of service for the Northern Adventure. Since taking charge of Route 20, she has mainly ran incident free and hopefully will for many more years.
