I just received my first shemagh (an import from Afghanistan, actually) and this is the first video I watched about how to use it. Thank you for the simple instructions.
They could a great asset , when you are cold . I have used this so much for Hunting, hiking, staying in caves at night . I advice anyone who seeps outside in cold weather to toss one in their backpack.
Very good I have used them for years. We used to call them scarves. My winter one is a wool Black Watch Tartan the green and blue is a surprisingly good camouflage in the forest. It is about the same size and ties in just the same ways. I have one of newer ones for the summer in dry country, green and green on brown. Lets the air move and makes a bit of shade all to the good. I hear some of the colors and patterns are significant in some parts of the world, be carefull what gang colors you choose.
Most of the natives go with black + white, or red + white. If you're Muslim ☪️, you have a black band around the forehead (honor Mohammed). If you're not wearing it with the black band, you're not impersonating. Of course, folks make a living (natives) making + marketing authentic / original, vs, say, knock offs from *"China," etc..
A shemagh (or ghotra or keffiyah) is just a piece of soft woven cloth, which can be the size of a table cloth and any variation of smaller size. If you're in the Middle East, the patterns woven into the fabric will represent a sect or a people group, such as any of the terrorist organizations. They all have their own patterns and colors. So, you can ID who a man is, by his shemagh. EDIT: If it's long and rectangular, it's called amamah, which are popular in some countries or during certain times of the year/for certain occasions.
Those who make fun or spread falsehood will have a hard time explaining why they did so on the day we are all judged for our deeds. Do you really want the extra weight on your shoulders from a silly comment?
yeah never thought id have a reason to consider buying anything like this ... now ... wondering why the warnings werent heeded so i wouldnt have needed to know how to tie one ... or own one.
In Melbourne, Australia where compulsory wearing of face masks became compulsory today, scarves (which I presume includes a shemagh) are considered an acceptable alternative. And to think it's not that long ago that we were discussing banning face coverings in public. I live well outside the current lockdown zone, but who knows? So I've got a shemagh and some masks on order. Thanks for the demo on at least one way to wear it.
I literally just bought my first one for when it gets chilly here in Michigan and was looking how to tie it. Glad to see someone else from here also has one!
I have seen a lot of people use this style out in the deserts around Los Angeles. Once the wind picks up the entire top of there head gets filled with sand. The section he takes under his chin goes around the top of the head in other styles that do not leave you with a literal "sandy blond" look.
I Am Prior Service USMC and US Army, and,a owner of several shemaghs. Believe You Me, here in Tucson, Arizona, they come in handy for Me both at work as a landscape laborer, and also , makes a nice fashion statement, accessorizing My Condor cover and outfits.
My ex girlfriend decided it was a good idea to burn a box full of irreplaceable items I stashed during my career in the U.S.Army. Having said that. I've been unable to find a company that makes a quality shemag. Do you have any suggestions?
July 2020 Panic has forced my hand. Store's require face-coverings.😠 Okay! You asked for it! Shemagh Time!😉 I still have a tremendous urge to pull my t-shirt over my head, raise my arms like so 💪, & shout, I AM CORNHOLIO!!!😦😦😦 (Are you threatening me?!) Long live Beavis!!!😄😄😄😄
Not only terrorists wear these, many military groups do and they are very good for keeping warm in the winter and cool in the summer, as well they help with basic survival.
This is one of the best pieces of backpacking gear you can get. It replaces bandanas, towels, hats, sun umbrellas, it can pre-filter water, make a sling or a splint, carry firewood, use as a potholder for pulling dishes off the fire, for $10 it’s dumb to not have one.
I wore a shemagh (sheh-mah) (also called ghotra {goh-trah} or keffiya {keh-FEE-yah}) as a face covering during the US outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. I wrapped this style of shemagh shown by Creek Stewart (with minor variation) to cover my face to satisfy the requirement that faces be covered. I also figured out how the wrap the turbans worn by Sallah and Indy in the Map Room scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark, using the loose tail to cover my face. These wraps help in many weather conditions, as well as when I ride my horse. In extreme cold conditions, a paper mask can be worn under the shemagh, to trap moisture. I recommend these wrapped shemagh highly. The wrap of the shemagh type shown in this video is quick, easy, versatile, comfortable. EDIT: See also British SAS shemagh
Thank you for the video. I purchased one of these scarfs to wear while I am riding my scooter in the cold weather and couldn't figure out how to put it on my face properly. Thanks
@robraw101 You find scarves troubling? Yes I know where it's from. But that's got nothing to do with why he's wearing it. Should muslims find bagels troubling?
Thanks willowhaven. Cool vid. I have several shemaghs, am 110% American (actually 3/4 Native American), and I wear mine all year depending on the weather. They can warm you or keep you cool plus are very multi-purpose. Thanks again.
oh jeez, I wish I could get a dime for every time someone claimed to be a percentage of native American. Also by your profile pic, there is no way you are 3/4 or 75% Native American,
David Horgan you realize Genes dont always physically show what races someone has in them right? If you had paid any attention in highschool biology you would know that. And the US hasnt been around long enough to establish a race of people, you can break down Caucasian into about 3 races, 1, Norse or Germanic 2, Slavic and 3, Latin (im talking Italian) and some may argue even Asian
Thanks for this. I always thought these were two-piece articles such as a hat and bandana (this is what I traditionally wear in cold). This is much more convenient and would take up less space in a pack being one piece. Also I can see where these could prove useful in more than just cold weather. Creek, you are awesome!
Damn, I bought a Sniper Face Veil made by Condor Outdoor Products and it's got 8" more on one side.. It's more of a camo veil. Think I'll buy a Shemagh also.
@AmosJohnson if you wet the keffiyeh the water will evaporate keeping your head cool. Also it protects your eyes because it is partially transparent but not enough to the point where sand will get through
Got one to use in place of paper masks. I know I will cut a terrifying figure in public, but I mask up on MY terms. Thank you for the video. I now know how to tie one. Stay safe. Stay healthy.
These go back to biblical times. Abraham, being a nomad of sorts definately wore something like this during his travels across Canaan and Egypt. Also, I am certain the Israelites wandering in the desert for 40 years also had them. Traditionally, you cloth would bear the weave of your tribe, hence Levites wore one pattern while the Benjemanites wore another...

I think that scarves are rectangular, these are square and made of a specific fabric which makes them more versatile.
