"Johnny Five is alive!" I always had a soft spot for this movie, it was a vital part of my childhood. Johnny Five reminds me of WALLE, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was his primary inspiration.
Honestly said the same thing when "Chappie" came out. That movie DEFINITELY took some inspiration from Short Circuit. In fact if they tried to modernize this film, Chappie would probably be close to what you'd end up with.
Wall-E ripped off Johnny 5 the way the armor in Halo ripped off Doom Guy. I find it cringey, and if anyone thinks I should lighten up, they clearly don't care what others think if ripping off established franchises is fine. It's as if some of us are so uncreative that we're convinced that creativity doesn't really exist, but is simply the act of ripping off other things. As if they see that a chicken comes from an egg, but won't accept that an egg comes from a chicken, but rather that eggs come from.. other eggs? They multiply? Really, the assumption that "Hey, if I copy something that works and call it my own, that counts as creative," is equivalent in absurdity, in my opinion, to an assumption that eggs multiply from other eggs, rather than being laid by an animal. /rant

Shame he was used by them and the bank burglar… Oscar 😢😢 but without Oscar doing everything against his friends and treating him worse than his friends giving him reason for anger and needing help with fixing himself at a Radio Shack Store!! 😢😢😂😂 Made for a better plot imo!!
Surprised there was so little mention of Ally Sheedy, not only was her character quite developed and deep for an 80's female role in a comedy, her ability to act so convincingly with an inanimate object contributed greatly to his believablity. She carries a huge part of this movies success.
As far as Johnny Five not having the emotional connection of ET, I totally cried it looked like he was killed at the end, and also in SC2 when he was beat up and had to steal a car battery to stay alive.
I last saw the Short Circuit movies more than 30 years ago as a little kid and I vaguely remember the car battery bit, now that you mention it. Wow, can't believe what my brain still holds.
I can’t believe that wasn’t mentioned. When I saw Wall-e the first thing I thought of was Johnny-5. I mean, how can you not? The eyes. It’s all in the eyes.
I watched Short Circuit 2 a few weeks ago on UA-cam for free, and i'd forgotten how emotional that scene is where Johnny gets beat up by the thugs. I'm 48 years old and i had tears in the corner of my eyes! My autistic 12-yr-old loves Wall-E and robot/machine beings so i thought i'd share these movies with him, and i think the first one is fine, but idk how he'll handle watching Johnny take a beating.
I was 8 when the sequel came out and I still can't stand it. Was kind of urked about most of the cast not coming back for the sequel. Guess Gutenberg made sure when he signed onto new movies to not have a sequel clause in his contract. I can go back and watch the first one though but hard pass on part 2.
OMG it's literally in THREE 80s movies countdown scenes--you're so right! It's like a form of audio conditioning, but 80s style so our hair comes out poofier. :)@@EightiesJames

TIME itself screws with me most likely from the hippocampus and pineal gland having a F'n field day with each other because of aggressive long-term memory activation (becoming self-aware) at age 2. And these films were very popular at the time.
I was actually talking to a friend about batteries Not included the other day. I was telling him how it is a highly under appreciated and not well known movie.
I thought he was going to say Flight of the Navigator and Batteries not included, but the latter came out in 87. Fun fact Steve Guttenburg stared in Cocoon with real life couple Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, both of whom starred in Batteries not Included (play very similar characters)

I had the remote control Johnny five, as with most remote control toys of the 80s he was very slow and didn't like carpets. In all honesty I got more enjoyment from the panini Short Circuit Sticker album
Well, I'd say for G.W. Bailey it's the same line of work, sort of, for his character, as Scroter he was head of security for NOVA Robotics, and he played as head of security in Mannequin as well. However, with Steve Gutenberg, in Short Circuit, he was a robotics programmer, not anything to do with law/rules enforcement, like his character Mahoney in Police Academy did. So, no it's not an unofficial PA spin-off, a shared universe perhaps, considering both movies take place on the US west coast (Police Academy took place in L.A., and Short Circuit took place in Washington/Oregon areas!), It was a sort of reunion of the two actors though.
So glad you mentioned the enormous amount they spent on the robot props! That they spent such a huge proportion of the budget on a prop that is essentially the major character has long been one of the most amazing facts of the this movie. And it probably made a lot of shooting so much simpler and faster, having a thoroughly practical prop that could do so much in-camera.
Man, I love this movie!! My grandparents 3 states away kept a VHS copy and I'd spend every summer as a kid there watching this with them at least a few times per visit. Freaking 40 now and I bought myself a bluray copy recently that proudly gets displayed along with my other favorite movies but Short Circuit will always hold a special place in my heart!
As far as I can remember, this was the first movie I saw as a kid where I cried at a robot when I thought he died. Still a great movie after all these years
Minty's videos are starting to evolve for me from sweet doses of nostalgia to immense sadness at modern Hollywood and how we will never see movies like this made again. Then I always go over to wikipedia and IMDB and research these movies more and look at when they were released and what other films were out that week. That will REALLY depress you, yet also make you incredibly grateful you got to be alive in the 80s.

You Rock Minty!! Can you PLEASE pretty Please do 'Batteries Not Included'. Short Circuit is one of those films that was often on TV but now it's forgotten about, i haven't seen this on UK TV for many many years, Batteries Not Included is the same & it's such a Wholesome Movie.
I was like six years old when I saw this movie in the late 80s. I was lucky enough that my father had recorded the movie onto a VHS set when it had played on TV. I remember Number Five being the first thing I ever really self-identified with. I had almost forgotten about this movie, until it came up about a week ago while talking to a friend about how sometimes people say I act like a robot, and it made me remember watching Short Circuit over and over as a kid. Thank you for giving me this chance to revisit my childhood. It was not long after watching Short Circuit that I would go on to read the instruction manual for my babysitter's Game Genie for her kid's NES. In there I would learn how to hack Game Genie codes. I would go on to commit increasingly-geeky achievements, until I am now a man in his 40s who has designed hardware and software used to facilitate brain research studies. The summer this movie released my family was "camping" at the army base like every summer! Ended up watching it in the theater 7 times! "Wouldn't you like to be a pepper too?" My favorite childhood movie.
good seeing this again. I've been building robots to demonstrate at a local science museum. I use pics of Johnny 5 to show kids what the 80's sci fi robots looked like, sharp angles, tank treads compared to the softer curves of modern sci fi. I think back then they were seen as cutting edge space and military hard wear, no they're consumer products. I would love to see you tackle the Tom Seleck robot flick "Runaway". on the service it has a simuler plot to blade runner but it entirely different. Please Minty, we need your wisdom and insightfulness on this !
Wonder if the El DeBarge video eventually inspired the totally mental TV series "Cop Rock" 4 years later? Yes, just when you though the '90s couldn't be any weirder, there was a musical version of "Law & Order".
I loved these movies as a kid and now as an adult a get to show them to my kids. I watched the 2nd first, didn't know there was a first one till later. Then it made so much more sense. Lol.

I LOVED Johnny Five as a kid, and made my own version out of a remote control truck, cardboard, and random junk I'd find on the road while riding my bike.
I actually enjoyed the sequel more than the original. Call me weird, but that is just how it is. It really showed the heart behind Johnny and his evolution into a more evolved state of life.
She even had a Cameo with a line in Home Alone 2, as a gate attendant, after Kevin arrives in NY and sees the Manhattan skyline, he asks her if he's in NYC! Lol
I love this movie and even watched it again the other day. Minty your videos helped me get through rigorous training sessions during my rehabilitation after a head injury left me unable to walk unaided. Watching these videos about classic movies I loved really helped. Hours of sessions on the steady bars and treadmills. Watching your videos during these sessions really helped take my mind off it. Keep it up and I’m looking forward to the next one

I sometimes ask that question when meeting people/ new co-workers, if they answer something about "Short Circuit" with a smile then I consider them to be more friendly and intelligent than average. 😊
Although I haven’t seen this in years, this is another one of my childhood highlights. Such a feel good movie. One of my all time favorites. So many great moments, such a great overall atmosphere, and a cast with amazing chemistry. My friends and I quoted this, Ghostbusters and Three Amigos endlessly for too many years.
As a child I wanted to make Johnny so I would build him out of LEGOS. Now that I have kids of my own I want to really make a Johnny 5 as a project and make memories with the kiddos
Short Circuit 2 has the most emotional scene in cinema history ever! When 5 gets assaulted by those thugs and hits one of them in the ass with the toy airplane. You cant not cry when he rises up all banged up to the saddest piano cover of all time.. what a movie.
I have fond memories of Johnny V. These older movies have a tactile, almost physical nature to them that is quite missing in modern movies, IMHO. you told the story really well - Thank Tou for that! Cheers!

My first awareness of this film came from when I first watched the Longest Yard (2005), in which a brief clip of Short Circuit was featured on a tv within the film.
This movie and it's sequel(it's only sequel) are my favorite movies!! The part of the second movie is when Johnny 5 gets mad and made a "friend" help him fix himself at a Radio Shack 😂😂😂😂

What's it worth" businessman type… Oscar was just a Bank robber that would mistreat an old lady if she had the tools to break into the Bank vault!! Because initially Johnny 5 WAS naive enough to be treated similar to said old lady type!! That's why he was stealing car radios for those gang members only to realize what he was doing wasn't what the gang members told him!! By the way, I have both movies on separate DVDs 😁😁🤓🤓
I love Minty's videos. I learn new things every time. I love that the Tim Blaney who voiced Frank the Pug was the voice of Johnny 5. Never realized that. Also I feel dumb that I never picked up on the fact that the robot lazers used the same sound effect from the Proton Packs. Small world. Very cool. I love this movie. When I was a kid I built me a 3 foot tall version of Johnny 5 out of Contrux toys one of my favorite builting toys. Even had his eye flaps, lazer and the utility arm. I had to hold him up because there wasn't a way for me to stabalize it. Sadly I never got a picture or anything as we didn't have one available at the time and I did have to take the robot apart because I used all the pieces and my brother was wanting to play with them too. I miss that toy, so much fun. Great movie, great vid!

"When you're dead, you're dead." That was the first time I had heard that in my life as a young kid, and it scared the hell out of me. I absolutely LOVE this movie. I think it's amazing how this movie featured robots attacking a military convoy in the beginning, a look at the future of robotics. And now in 2024, we have fully embraced drone warfare.

There was a $1 movie theater across the street from one of the houses I grew up in. I must have seen this movie a hundred times over the summer. My friends and I would hit up 7-11 and load up on drinks and candy to sneak in. Usually we would only pay once, but either just sneak back in for the next showing, or see something else. I always thought we were being so sneaky, but the ushers and manager just didn’t bother extorting the kids for another $5.

This is one of the movies I went to the theaters to see with my Dad when I was a kid. Others include Gremlins, Superman, Trading Places, and Flash Gordon. All remain at the top of my Favorites list to this day.
While watching Short Circuit 2, one scene has a former Shipmate of mine, Robert LaSardo. His scene shows him breaking into a car. Robert and I served on USS Cape Cod AD 43 in San Diego.
This is one of the few movies that I seen, in the theater, as a child. I grew up in a rural area, so the theater only showed movies on the weekend, and struggled to stay in business. On top of that we didn't go to town that often.
As a child, I never realised that Fisher Stevens was a white man playing an Indian character. But now, he clearly wouldn't get away with it as easily today, and it seems more obvious to my adult self.
He never actually uses the name Johnny 5 in this movie, he's Number 5 until he hears "Who's Johnny?" on the radio and says that's his new name just as the movie ends. "Johnny 5 is alive!" was the tagline for Short Circuit 2, he says it after he rebuilds himself in the radio shack and gets a punk rock makeover.
@@mykeday I doubt it, given that Chappie is from South Africa. If it had been made by an American studio I'd say you were probably right, but as it is I don't think so. EDIT: Well, I take it back. I thought I'd better look it up to be sure, and while it is a movie by Neill Blomkamp and it was filmed in South Africa, its actually officially an American movie, produced by Columbia Pictures. Regardless of how it came about though, it's still presented as a new IP so I still think it's a ripoff.
I remember watching this and it's sequel at my grandparents house in the 90s. My Grandpa taped them off cable television when they aired in the eighties. I thought me and my siblings were the only ones to watch these movies. Good memories.

One of my childhood favorites and an absolute classic.
Batteries Not Included was another movie from that era with cutsie robots. That one and Short Circuit are solid pillars of my childhood memories.

As far as I can remember, this was the first movie I saw as a kid where I cried at a robot when I thought he died. Still a great movie after all these years
Minty's videos are starting to evolve for me from sweet doses of nostalgia to immense sadness at modern Hollywood and how we will never see movies like this made again. Then I always go over to wikipedia and IMDB and research these movies more and look at when they were released and what other films were out that week. That will REALLY depress you, yet also make you incredibly grateful you got to be alive in the 80s.
Top job Minty, I spoke of this film just last week! In Europe, Renault Cars are reinventing the ‘5’ model as an electric car and it was reviewed on UA-cam by Jonny Smith/The Late Brake Show, so I happily proclaimed “Jonny Number 5” and “Number Five Is Alive”!

Short Circuit is one of those films that was often on TV but now it's forgotten about, i haven't seen this on UK TV for many many years, Batteries Not Included is the same & it's such a Wholesome Movie.

I was like six years old when I saw this movie in the late 80s. I was lucky enough that my father had recorded the movie onto a VHS set when it had played on TV. I remember Number Five being the first thing I ever really self-identified with. I had almost forgotten about this movie, until it came up about a week ago while talking to a friend about how sometimes people say I act like a robot, and it made me remember watching Short Circuit over and over as a kid. Thank you for giving me this chance to revisit my childhood.
It was not long after watching Short Circuit that I would go on to read the instruction manual for my babysitter's Game Genie for her kid's NES. In there I would learn how to hack Game Genie codes. I would go on to commit increasingly-geeky achievements, until I am now a man in his 40s who has designed hardware and software used to facilitate brain research studies. The summer this movie released my family was "camping" at the army base like every summer! Ended up watching it in the theater 7 times! "Wouldn't you like to be a pepper too?" My favorite childhood movie.

good seeing this again. I've been building robots to demonstrate at a local science museum. I use pics of Johnny 5 to show kids what the 80's sci fi robots looked like, sharp angles, tank treads compared to the softer curves of modern sci fi. I think back then they were seen as cutting edge space and military hard wear, no they're consumer products.
I would love to see you tackle the Tom Seleck robot flick "Runaway". on the service it has a simuler plot to blade runner but it entirely different.

I loved these movies as a kid and now as an adult a get to show them to my kids. I watched the 2nd first, didn't know there was a first one till later. Then it made so much more sense. Lol.

Nope lol all jokes aside fantastic movies and hope one day “neca toys” makes a Johnny 5 figure for all of us fans to collect

I LOVED Johnny Five as a kid, and made my own version out of a remote control truck, cardboard, and random junk I'd find on the road while riding my bike.
I actually enjoyed the sequel more than the original. Call me weird, but that is just how it is. It really showed the heart behind Johnny and his evolution into a more evolved state of life.

I love this movie and even watched it again the other day. Minty your videos helped me get through rigorous training sessions during my rehabilitation after a head injury left me unable to walk unaided. Watching these videos about classic movies I loved really helped. Hours of sessions on the steady bars and treadmills. Watching your videos during these sessions really helped take my mind off it. Keep it up and I’m looking forward to the next one

"Wouldn't you like to be a pepper too..." I was like 9 when this came out and my cousins had it on VHS. We watched that scene like fifty times and laughed at it every single time! I'm glad you included it in your dialogue.
I've never seen this scene. Only caught the tv versions of it in England and they always cut that & the scrap yard scene. Weird.
I sometimes ask that question when meeting people/ new co-workers, if they answer something about "Short Circuit" with a smile then I consider them to be more friendly and intelligent than average. 😊
Although I haven’t seen this in years, this is another one of my childhood highlights. Such a feel good movie. More uniquely, what I associate with this is the world’s strongest man final as it was recorded off tv on the same vhs. I always wondered what happened to Steve Gutenberg until recently someone told me he gave up acting to care for his family like Rick morranis

Minty you have made my day I had this movie on VHS as a 11 year old in 86 and I was going to post the first thing that came into my mind and of course it was Johnny 5 Alive but that's the first thing you said. that was a awesome year for children's sci-fi movies
One of my all time favorites. So many great moments, such a great overall atmosphere, and a cast with amazing chemistry. My friends and I quoted this, Ghostbusters and Three Amigos endlessly for too many years.
As a child I wanted to make Johnny so I would build him out of LEGOS. Now that I have kids of my own I want to really make a Johnny 5 as a project and make memories with the kiddos

Short Circuit 2 has the most emotional scene in cinema history ever! When 5 gets assaulted by those thugs and hits one of them in the ass with the toy airplane. You cant not cry when he rises up all banged up to the saddest piano cover of all time.. what a movie.

My first awareness of this film came from when I first watched the Longest Yard (2005), in which a brief clip of Short Circuit was featured on a tv within the film.
This movie and it's sequel(it's only sequel) are my favorite movies!! The part of the second movie is when Johnny 5 gets mad and made a "friend" help him fix himself at a Radio Shack 😂😂😂😂
Lol that "friend" is played by actor Michael McKean (Lenny on Laverne & Shirley!), he's always played secondary characters.

What's it worth" businessman type… Oscar was just a Bank robber that would mistreat an old lady if she had the tools to break into the Bank vault!! Because initially Johnny 5 WAS naive enough to be treated similar to said old lady type!! That's why he was stealing car radios for those gang members only to realize what he was doing wasn't what the gang members told him!! By the way, I have both movies on separate DVDs 😁😁🤓🤓

I love Minty's videos. I learn new things every time. I love that the Tim Blaney who voiced Frank the Pug was the voice of Johnny 5. Never realized that. Also I feel dumb that I never picked up on the fact that the robot lazers used the same sound effect from the Proton Packs. Small world. Very cool. I love this movie. When I was a kid I built me a 3 foot tall version of Johnny 5 out of Contrux toys one of my favorite builting toys. Even had his eye flaps, lazer and the utility arm. I had to hold him up because there wasn't a way for me to stabalize it. Sadly I never got a picture or anything as we didn't have one available at the time and I did have to take the robot apart because I used all the pieces and my brother was wanting to play with them too. I miss that toy, so much fun. Great movie, great vid!
I'm weird and noticed stuff like this, both El DeBarge, and the EV speakers seen in the movie are both from Michigan. (EV, or Electro-Voice is no longer a Michigan company)
I actually love the second more, but they're both great. If I ever figure out which box has my DVD's in it I'll watch it again.

"When you're dead, you're dead." That was the first time I had heard that in my life as a young kid, and it scared the hell out of me. I absolutely LOVE this movie. I think it's amazing how this movie featured robots attacking a military convoy in the beginning, a look at the future of robotics. And now in 2024, we have fully embraced drone warfare.

Yup, G.W. Bailey seems to like playing cop-like characters, here he was head of security for NOVA Robotics, he played head of security for rival multiproduct stores in Mannequin, and most recently played a detective on a CSI like show.

There was a $1 movie theater across the street from one of the houses I grew up in. I must have seen this movie a hundred times over the summer. My friends and I would hit up 7-11 and load up on drinks and candy to sneak in. Usually we would only pay once, but either just sneak back in for the next showing, or see something else. I always thought we were being so sneaky, but the ushers and manager just didn’t bother extorting the kids for another $5.
"Number Five is Alive" ... This is the title we got in Germany.... Nummer 5 lebt. I loooooved this movie and it's second part back then. I worn out the VHS... Same here - I had to re-record it a decade later because the first VHS became unwatchable from running it through the machine too often.
This is one of the movies I went to the theaters to see with my Dad when I was a kid. Others include Gremlins, Superman, Trading Places, and Flash Gordon. All remain at the top of my Favorites list to this day.
While watching Short Circuit 2, one scene has a former Shipmate of mine, Robert LaSardo. His scene shows him breaking into a car. Robert and I served on USS Cape Cod AD 43 in San Diego.

This is one of the few movies that I seen, in the theater, as a child. I grew up in a rural area, so the theater only showed movies on the weekend, and struggled to stay in business. On top of that we didn't go to town that often.

There was a remake or rip off of Short Circuit. Not sure how it would be defined. But it is called Chappie.
He never actually uses the name Johnny 5 in this movie, he's Number 5 until he hears "Who's Johnny?" on the radio and says that's his new name just as the movie ends. "Johnny 5 is alive!" was the tagline for Short Circuit 2, he says it after he rebuilds himself in the radio shack and gets a punk rock makeover.

@@mykeday I doubt it, given that Chappie is from South Africa. If it had been made by an American studio I'd say you were probably right, but as it is I don't think so.
EDIT: Well, I take it back. I thought I'd better look it up to be sure, and while it is a movie by Neill Blomkamp and it was filmed in South Africa, its actually officially an American movie, produced by Columbia Pictures.
Regardless of how it came about though, it's still presented as a new IP so I still think it's a ripoff.

I remember watching this and it's sequel at my grandparents house in the 90s. My Grandpa taped them off cable television when they aired in the eighties. I thought me and my siblings were the only ones to watch these movies. Good memories.
