@@schmidts.bootmaker I think we simply have a terminology usage misunderstanding here. There's a difference between a shoe being hand made and a welt being handmade. If I build a deck with power tools and boards that I didnt mill myself, I'm still claiming that deck was hand built. Samething goes with guitars. Even the cheap ones are built by hands that use tools .
Well, it's wrong. Whether you stitch a welt into a gemming or into an insole by hand, it's still by hand. Makers should still make the distinction, of course.
in the background of his video you can see a curved needle outsole stitcher. He uses a machine to sew the welt to the outsole, therefore I guess its not a handmade boot now is it? There is a difference between a handwelted and a machine welted boot sure, but to say a machine welted boot isn't handmade is hypocritical.
100% and to also say that if someone adds a Goodyear welt by hand is not handmade, is disingenuous. It doesn't have to be done with a Goodyear welt machine in a plant to be a Goodyear welt.
Um redwings use leather insoles, and they are good year welted. As do my grant stones. Construction style has nothing to with quality. Even Blake stitched boots can be made with good materials. They are machine made, yes, but that has nothing to do with quality.
I think if you sew a leather welt to this midsole, it will be Goodyear. However, the machine-made Goodyer is a modification of the real one, because the welt is not sewn to the sole, but to a frame made of fabric tape glued to it. That's why the real Goodyear is the one you show and it was hand-sewn.
@@schmidts.bootmaker we're on the same page there. I'm just dipping my toes into cordwaining, but I've been crocheting since I was little. People who call all crocheted squares "granny squares" bother me. Words have definitions for a reason.
I pretty sure a human has to operate and hand guide the sewing machine as it stitches the welt. Imo that is still handmade just not hand stitched. At least compared to cemented (glued) shoes that use multiple machines on an assembly line to press the uppers to the sole and inject bonding.
Still a no for me. That’s like saying driving 30mph is running 30mph. I’m operating the pedal with my foot so really I ran it doesn’t make sense to me just like saying I guide a shoe through a machine therefore it’s handmade.
sewing handmade boots with a sewing machine makes them not hand made, so what are you talking about? Punching out the shape of the sole with a machine makes them not hand made, so what are you talking about?
The pancakes you made today aren’t home made because you didn’t grow the wheat and mill the flour. The butter totally came from the store. Oh, and that gas you use in your stove? Totally store bought. I mean, nothing wrong with store bought, but just please be more honest about what you’re advertising. 🙁 I will never claim to have done anything myself ever again. 💔
yes, there are like Redwing and some other brands that do that but the holdfast is very thin and it's just glued onto the insole. They are not one-piece
This shouldn't be unpopular. Goodyear welts were made with the intent of lowering manual labour cost and speeding up the process.
You're right, I just wish companies who say their Goodyear welted boots are ''handmade'' would be more honest.

@@lukecornett4874I agree. If you use a sewing machine to sew a boot's upper is it no longer a hand made boot?

But you accept a sewing machine for the uppers. 😂
Ya I do.
Also not hand made.
