His last words were to his wife: "I am not the least afraid of death - Remember what a good wife you have been - Tell all my children to remember how good they have been to me."
It's true that he was religious in his youth, and even planned to become a minister at one point. He was definitely worried that his findings would cause conflict as most people were very religious in those days. But most people manage to keep their faith while accepting evolution as the work of god.
David Bowie, Charlie Darwin and Horrible Histories. Three of my favourite things together! (Maybe four - I like to pretend that's Bollo from the Mighty Boosh!)
@TheNumberOneJumpJack I can confirm that...it's about Mary Seacole. Brilliant Jamaican accent and some amazing dancers...another great song from Horrible Histories!
the guy who he stayed with on the HMS Beagle was actually one of the biggest opposers of his theory and ended up commiting suicide because he felt he helped and unlawful cause
Lads can we all just chill out. I'm Catholic but I do believe in evolution; you cannot argue with science but I was able to find the balance between science and faith. So can y'all quit arguing and listen to Mat singing; that what we came here for.
"It has served us well, this myth of Christ"-Pope Leo X. Although I am an atheist, I think that Christianity has given humanity a good reson to be moral.
When ? In the middle ages ? Durign the cursads ? Durign the witch hunt ? Durign the regime of the nazis ? Not really... The church CLAIMS to be a source of morals... while the only moral thing they ever did was LOOSING their power.
Eagle93Writer Well, there are exeptions but this is when people have interpreted christian philosophies incorrectly. And although what they were doing was undoubtably wrong, they belived it was , at least partially, right(with the possible execption of the Nazis). Many good deeds are inspired by Christianity and other religons but not many bad ones are. It's just the bad ones get noticed.
Yeast isBeast I say quite the opposite ALL the good thigns wuold STILL happen. On the other hand the BAD things NOT, because the one single REASON fro them is Religion.. SO Religion is a Problem.
Eagle93Writer Religon can be used as an excuse to cover up wanting power. So what? That doesn't make religon a bad thing. It helps people; If a Christian was on their deathbed, and then someone like you came and told them christianinty was a myth, and they belived you, they would be a lot more miserable, because they would know that when they died they would cease to exist. Religon is a comfort to people, and I bet if you took it away overnight, suicide rates would increase drematically. Religon, although, in my opinion, it's not true, gives people hope.
Eagle93Writer Every religion has its ups and downs...Along with the crusades, the church was also a place where the hopeless could find hope, needy could find a refuge... You get the point. :)
Across all sciences there are two fundamental assumptions: That the universe is real, and that we can learn about it. Those two assumptions has brought us a lot. Our knowledge about evolution for example has brought us many advances in medicine, and other forms of public health. Our knowledge about gravity has given us travel around the earth as well as out of Earth's own gravity well, and it has enabled worldwide communication. Those two assumptions are no stretch, and the results works.
I am not a biologist, but I'll still try: Earlier biologists believed that gradual mutations and selection would mean that animals change slowly over time, where we today know that most species are in equilibrium with their environment and does not change much if at all, where if the environment change rapidly we see rapid changes. So zebras in Africa would not need to change once adapted, and horses in Europe wouldn't need either. In adapting to the different environments they drift apart (...)
Ah, don't pay attention to people who say there are no missing links found etc. "Missing link" is a very out-dated term from the quaint old days when we thought that there would be one ancestor who was exactly half-ape and half-man or something like that. It's suprising how people don't seem to understand ti very well, not that I blame them, science is rather hard. I'm a bit of a biology nerd :P I do recommend reading up on it though, fascinating stuff.
its believed life started in the 'soup' of elements that was present at the beginning of the world and eventually they combined to create life in the form of small micro organisms which then grew into greater and more complex lifeforms. or at least thats what i remember from science lessons.
Yes, SCIENTIFIC theory, which is different from philosophical theory. Theories in the arts and philosophy may address ideas and empirical phenomena which are not easily measurable, in modern science the term "theory", or "scientific theory" is generally understood to refer to a proposed explanation of empirical phenomena, made in a way consistent with scientific method.
I was watching Beer Bad (Buffy) with my sister, and she told me she didn't understand how we evolved from apes, so I just showed her this video! She understands now.
I know! It's largely flawless, and although it seems easy at first, it could be complex in some cases, and most religious people accept it too! My English teacher is really religious and she said that she believes in Evolution too, I think it's silly that people can't believe in it, and like my English teacher said: 'Maybe God started the evolution process' which means that religious people don't have a reason not to believe any more!
I was born an Englishman , I am now living in Wales. How to long shall it take, for me to evolve & become a real human being like the indigenous people of Cymru or am I condemned to be Englishman forever ?
We have also found a fossilised dinosaur footprint with a human footprint in it, when evolution says humans didn't even exist when dinosaurs were around...
you remind me of this picture of dinosaurs. It said "when dinosaurs ran out of food they dug underground in search for more. that's why dinosaur bones are in the ground".
It is not known how abiogenesis/biopoiesis occurred, or if it was how life began. However it is the main theory - life arising from simple organic compounds, either on Earth, or on another planet (the another planet theory is known as weak Panspermia.)
Evolution is 'just a theory' as much as the Theory of Gravity or Germ Theory; in fact, it's probably stronger than the theory of gravity as we don't know half of what we'd like about gravity atm. It's certainly a very strong theory, proven beyond reasonable doubt at this point, and only getting strong with genetics in th elast few decades, and I've never seen any real holes in it (though if you have any I'd be happy to look, I'm a biology nut :D)
Yea. Also there is something wrong with what the show said on the Sketch before and this song, We did not evolve from Chimps. All prime mates evolve from one Animal that is extinct. Same for all of the groups of animals that are alike. Knines, cats(Lions, tiger, cats them selfs, ect...)
The first part of this is inaccurate. He didn't join the Beagle to study evolution and he only came up with the theory during the voyage not before. Obviously the bit about the monkey is a joke and it sort of leads on from there so it can have poetic license and it's still a good song.
The only people I've seen saying we descended from chimps are actually Creationists and the like. We didn't. We have a close common ancestor with chimps. If you by slight changes mean that we can show how animals become very different over millions of years (Such as whales and land-mammals), then you're right. Last, I'm not viewing this as an argument, but a teaching session. Creationists aren't in need of further debates, but an education. +, the music IS awesome.
You do know that horses and zebras are different species, right? And that they can interbreed? The problem for these two aren't that they're too different to interbreed, but to interbreed viably (In this case, the offspring is sterile). And as with everything poorly fitted to survive, it will die if threatened. In other cases the two groups are, because of rapid changes or because of distance, changed so much that they can't interbreed at all when they meet again.
I already know about ring species, and it doesn't really change what I said, only one kind of evolution can explain common descent. Regardless of whether they are seperated by a volcano or whatever, only if the mutations which occur are incompatible to specific other mutations will they be able to seperate. The only way they "know" that the bones which they use to represent the evolution of man are related is because they look similiar, and that's like looking at the bat as a bird.
I just love the idea of mixing David Bowie, Charles Darwin and Mat Baynton. What a winning combination!

Very good, very informative. It sends a great message to the kids and hopefully spurs them on to learn more.

exactly why evolution is no theory. Its a hypothesis, a tentative conjecture.
