I appreciate how you actually just use stuff that works rather than trying to be trendy or use the newest (insert hype tactical brand) gear. It’s a breath of fresh air.
A lot of dudes are obsessed with the tough guy ego trip of roughing it. I definitely agree with cutting back on unnecessary weight, you probably dont need a tent, you probably dont need a full mess kit, but a little food and a shelter half are just a little extra weight for a shit ton of comfort, and comfort does count. Its not everything but anyone whos been caught out in the rain, without food, or swarmed by bugs, knows the less you can make the things you control suck, the better your mindset and the better you can do your job
You need to rough it so you can know what you’re talking about. Who is using a shelter half in 2024? That counters your argument mate. Gotta actually use the gear.
One of the best simple, solid, positive vids on the TAP. WELL DONE. your packing list is effective and useful. I’m the guy who designed it, if you need more information feel free to reach out.
I just purchased my first TAP. Forgive my ignorance but is it supposed to have some wiggle to it? It seems kind of loose despite most of the tabs cinched up as much as they will go. I realize I am opening myself to a ton of trolling “this guys a shrimp, hit the gym, etc etc” but I really want this to fit snug. Am I doing something wrong or are these made for larger guys?
@Briathos1 I'm a pretty skinny guy and once it's totally loaded put it helps alot, there are modifications you can do to adjust the fit as well. I also use a tap for my winter loadout so having layers underneath helps alot
@@Briathos1yes unfortunately the bounce is an issue, when worn on body armor it can be tightened more since the armor has body, and stiffness to it. The harness was an afterthought. Was never in the initial requirement.
I used ro wear molle gear till i got burnt out on it, when i worked in executive protection and convoy protection. Since then in my early 40's i like using a.l.i.c.e. gear and chicom gear.
Highly recommend the Nalgene canteens. They're clear and they don't taste like plastic. Fits just perfectly into the canteen cup, and it's just worth it. $10 each, grab two of em, they're perfect replacements to the standard issue canteens that have seen better days.
Little late to the party but oh well. Just some advice, im an EMT in a fairly rural area and have had to deal with my fair share of trauma incidents, i cannot highly recommend enough carrying more gauze than you think you need. Wounds are gonna eat that shit up fast. I have fit feet upon feet upon feet into things like penetrating wounds in the hips/waist area, shoulders, etc. I've never felt like i had too much gauze on hand lol. Thanks for the great vid, ive been looking at getting a taps for myself lately, keep up the cool work and stay healthy
Plus up your med kit to the TCCC standard. You'd need more than a kravat and combat gauze. Also I'd always be wearing eye pro. You only have 2 eyes and if they are damaged you aren't getting them back.
I'm a huge fan of the TAPS. I have had the Spiritus Micro and Split rigs but ditched them for the TAPS. I did modify it based on some stuff from the @TheGruntPerspective channel. I live in southern NV, so like you I also carry two canteen, but am going to lower them a bit like you have to try out. Love the channel and content, thanks for sharing!
I always liked chest rigs, panels, or whatever (commercial) names may have. Essentially, you can get rid of most of the weight by keeping the plate carrier protection when you rest for a while.
Take a look at the Condor Recon 7 almost the same exact set up with better shoulder straps, also has a water bladder back pack pouch that you can get for about what the TAP rig costs.
I didn't have a problem with the front straps on the standard harness, but the Y style strap was not that comfortable and would get twisted. I switched to an H harness from krydex in ocp/ scorpion for $24.95 they also have it in Coyote for $21.95. It has similar front straps, but the H harness back is a lot less irritating. Wears pretty well under any of my rucksacks I've tried it with. It is a Chinese copy of spiritus systems tap upgrade kit, I'm a poor boy on social security.
My TAP arrives tomorrow. Perfect timing for this episode Randall. I’m sooo glad I have this as a basis to set up mine. I have 3 different FLC’s (ACU, Three Color Desert, Coyote) and I love them but always wanted thE TAP as well. Thanks for covering this.
This is what happens when a country fights frequent and/or long term wars. You create professional soldiers, warriors and eventually they teach others. Remember what “they” say, “We’re saving Democracy”.
These are probably general no brainers, but from what you have I would probably add a couple of bic lighters, a small lighter, and some sort of small multitool or pocket knife that is dedicated to live in the kit. Thats about it, though.
Back in the day, there was a good belief that extra medical (Cravats, Compressed Bandage, today maybe Quick Clot) could easilly be carried in the canteen pouch, under the canteen cup. Just extra emergency gear where it doesn't take up much real estate.
Yo Randall, Dirk here... It would be Cool if you could do a Video for Germans when it cones down to SHTF Stuff. They Gear that could be used etc. Specially when it comes to Self Defense because you lived in Germany long enough to know that we are not as armed like Americans. Think about it, could be a cool one 👍
ALICE is my main squeeze. LBE, Ruck sack. I like the FLC because of the butt pack, trying the TAPS but I know the LBE. I might try the molle butt pack on the lower front of the TAPS as a dangler.
Enjoyed the video. Not sure if you have but would you table top your taps and show how you set it up vs wearing it and discussing for the visual factoring
i'd add 30-50 feet of paracord, i was always paranoid about booby traps ... would rather tie a line on and drag suspicious objects/bodies a short distance before investigating. Plus there are countless other uses.
Did you balanced weight of water on right side? It looks like its pulling. I use DEET 50% and its evaporates after 2h and you have to respray it. Bug net is a must, but that deet allowes you to pull your sleevs
@GruntProof So how much does all that weigh with everything: water topped off, magazines filled, radio, etc? I saw an older video of yours showing this setup, and you weighed it at 25 lbs, but you didn't have one of your canteens or radio on, and I'm not sure if your mags were filled. Just looking for a weight comparison when you're ready to step off. Keep up the great videos.
I understand when you need a chest rig vs. when you need a plate carrier. I get that you can get a chest rigs that attach to/or can be worn over your plate carrier. I also see where it is advantageous to have your plate carrier and chest rig set up similarly in order to build muscle memory. But, I have never heard anyone say you can take the plates out of your plate carrier and simply wear it as a chest rig. Is this a bad idea? If so, please explain why. Great info. Please keep it up.
Wow i pretty much run the same same right down to the AGMs. Must be the generation of grunts. I run a LBE and a TAP mostly l, plate carrier for PT and situation dictate
The TAPS is, IMO, the best, most underrated piece of milsurp you can get your hands on. So versatile and modular. The harness is the worst part of the rig, definitely suggest upgrading to something like the Krydex Fat Strap H Harness.
@@fattiewestside I second this. $25 and you’re in business with a good H harness. You could even mod the harness it comes with after some sewing. I don’t think it’s the “best” rig, but for the price I don’t know if it can be beat.
Has anyone else run into the issues of gloves screwing with one grip? I have my normal grip on a pistol and when I throw gloves on I have zero confidence to control recoil. Is that just training or do gloves naturally impair one’s ability to control recoil and you just have to make do?
Another big downside to camelbacks: very hard to keep it clean and wash it properly during long backpacking trips. I like a smart water bottle, hooks up perfectly to a sawyer water filter.
You can modify it to work on a slickster vest or just by itself. Fkn love my tap, Admin pouch, 2 pistol mags, small flashlight and TQ on the front, 8 mags and a radio.

For bugs, try essential oils. Up in MN keeps mosquitoes, ticks, horse and deer flies away. Lemongrass works best.
