I have to say I absolutely love the cover art on this. Not sure why. The pale green with the giant skeleton about to behead some poor adventurer with a giant sword just evokes something deep in my soul.
I backed this during ZineQuest #3 more or less by chance because it looked like a quality product from the get go and I have to say it really didn't disappoint.
To me the 'vanilla' nature of the whole zine is a plus - it fills a niche that is kind of underrepresented in the OSR, which is providing an 'end-to-end' experience that is a whole mini-setting with a whole hex-crawl, overland travel, lots of small-ish dungeons and an overarching faction-induced world. The 'modular weird', on the other hand, is bountiful in the OSR landscape.
All of this is kept in a super slick, modern OSR layout that Ben mentioned. In my mind there are very few modules quite like this and I can wholeheartedly recommend it, especially as an OSR starting point.
I should tell publishers when I buy their stuff because I've seen it on Questing Beast... I passed up the KS for this because I didn't think it was really my style, but your video prompted me to add it to my As Seen On Questing Beast wishlist (which is already like $500 long even after spending ~$250 the past few months). You make some great, insightful videos, Ben. Thank you, and keep at it!
Oh trust me, you notice when one of your products has had a Questing Beast review. The jump in sales is significant.
Right, I think drivethru needs to post questing beast reviews. I hope he interviews a few of the solo rpg UA-camrs in his next interview. This channel is so cool!
Hurray for something with great layout but a bit more vanilla! As GM I want to be the one to add the weird!
I ordered this from Necrotic Gnome and received it just a few days later on March 1st, 2023. I received the booklet and pdf, but no map. Reading the description carefully of the item, no printed out map was included. A quick search showed that they are available from Gelatinous Cubism Press for $3.00 plus about $4.00 shipping. They also appear to have the booklet in stock at this time, so maybe that would have been the easier avenue to begin with.
Great review here that led me to purchase this supplement!
I would keep the map, but draw an inacurate map with a pen on a sheet of paper and might give that to the players via an NPC
That still keeps some mysterie and wonder while giving them direction and info
I'm just going to say I think its refreshing to not have whacky or weird stuff. If I want that in my game I would want to add it.
Gonzo seems like the status quo for OSR adventurers, so something more straightforward actually feels refreshing to me. Picking this up.
i am running this at the moment, the review is spot one, i also thought it was a bit vanilla in style but by leaning into the "builders" structures being made of unusal materials and seamless in design made it seem slightly otherworldly, i put a "just opened" musuem in Karn Buldar that had a map and explained some of the local history etc.
I personally love vanilla & straight forward.
When that is combined with control panel layout and great art, that's a winning combination right?
@@markkernow Yea I think this adventure hits all the right notes for me.
These videos are awesome ! My library keeps expanding. My wife is like “ another book ?!?!” And I always say “ sorry watched questing beast again ! It’s his fault lol”
That topographic map is serving MERP realness.
I love the 1-2pg dungeon with great interactivity to, Ben. They’re great for one-night adventures, or when the group is split up. I love the concept of having unusual effects occur from the PCs tinkering or experimenting with objects / items or even entire encounter areas. I find that mini-dungeons as such might be a bit dense regarding ecology (Gygax would be proud) but it’s easy enough to suspend disbelief when magic is involved. This is the type of product I’d buy.
Review sugestion : Into the Wyrd and Wild.
They just had a kickstarter but there is an older book you could look at. It's pretty cool.
The best part of this review for me is that I backed it in Kickstarter making watching this review less painful than usual for my bank balance.
I like how the map reminds me of a state park map.
In my printing days we called that binding “saddle stitch”
They still do
They still do
They still do.
I really like things like this as a grab bag. I throw in a tower of silver ax here, a Hommlet moathouse there, massage things and change the monsters as needed equals lots less work for me.
The aesthetic of adventurers in serious peril is great, for sure. One of my favorite covers for a book is one of the alternate covers for "Whitebox: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game" that depicts a low level party terrified in the face of some lizard-men assailants. What you'd be tempted to think of as low level cannon fodder in a more super-level game is a legitimate threat to entire communities in an OSR setting.
Another awesome video! I have been mainlining your reviews and drawing videos for several weeks now!!
I'd love all RPG maps to be done in that Ordinance Survey style. So clear to read & visualise.
I liked the more minimal take of vanilla...until I got to the dungeon room descriptions. You can do a lot with vanilla flavor other than pit traps, dart traps, and falling rocks, but this adventure didn't do much else.
Ooof, if that's all the traps..."vanilla" doesn't have to mean "the same"...
Totally agree. I was disappointed by the completely bare room listings. Not very gameable.
Great review just ordered it thanks for the link
Would have been nice to see more of that cypher used in the adventure. Not necessarily as a thing players _must_ decipher to finish the adventure. Not every player is into puzzles or the like. But a bit more, to make it seem like the players who do solve it have more to gain from having done so. You don't want to be the person who spent minutes or hours puzzling through a code, only to find very little reward.
I'd love to see you cover Evils of Illmire in a similar vein if you haven't already 😉.
Already sold out on the publisher's website. Womp. Womp.
Is it weird that I want to smash this module into the Hexenwald adventure site from Forbidden Lands where this tower is at the center. I feel like the witches would spice up the adventure.
Great map and illustrations
So I bought this and the map and it looks great! Are there any other old-school essentials modules like this one that you have or will review?
hallway, check; trap, check; monster, check... omg GIANT TRAPDOOR SPIDERS!
Seems like a really cool adventure.
Looks great! Perfect for a group on putting together....
And, its sold out. 😑
Wow that was quick
The Milton Effect! You really feel it in the OSR small-batch-printing world.
Email the publisher. They will put you on an email list for the restock in the next few weeks.
Can you do „Through the Valley of the Manticore“?
What are some good OSR adventures that do have the memorable "weirdness" elements in them, that aren't vanilla?
For a small adventure booklet, it appears jammed with content.
Uhm, doesn't the map say "player's map" right there on the right side?
Edit: ah, yeah, I got to the end of the video now.
I can write and draw but damn that's impressive.
I made a coment about a controversy on a another video about a controversy , i was polite but ill-informed. i am glad it was removed. Ill refrain from such comments in the future and would like to offer my apologies to Ben . Hope he sees this . Thanks
Je vient de l'acheter!
I love it
I like the "classic" feel of this adventure, but I find that there is way too much treasure overall, some of it unguarded or barely hidden. Felt unrealistic.
"This adventure would be a good introduction to get your 5e players introduced to osr style games."
*Queues an ad for a 5e product*
Can I also play it with 5e?
