The problem is not about fairness in enforcing the rules.
The problem is that the rule in question is completely illogical to enforce in the first place.
    Magnus was well-dressed.
As a spectator: Optically as a spectator you won't notice anything off about his attire. You probably won't even know the exact dress-code they were provided.
As a player: None of the players cared. No one lodged a complaint because no one cares. In fact, Ian mentioned in Take Take Take interview that there were like dozens of guys technically violating the dress code everyday down the playing hall. Doesn't seem like they were all penalized like Magnus was. Clearly no one ACTUALLY cares.
If the audience can't tell anything is off, and the players don't care, then why is this rule being enforced to the extent of not only a fine but round forfeit?
Why not enforce your rules when the outfit is outright inappropriate, rather than enforcing them blindly for a silly nitpick like this?
FIDE is being unreasonably stringent over a nitpick nobody cares about, and they have been pulling this on players every year, not just Magnus. It's just that the other players cannot do anything about it other than abide because they don't want to be kicked out after coming all the way to play.
FIDE likes to quote Magnus' "matter of principle" phrase out of context to make it sound like Magnus is just being uncooperative and privileged. But in the context of the nonsense FIDE pulls, it's good that Magnus is standing up against all of their nonsense and standing by his principles. FIDE is not doing anyone a favor, not the fans, not the players, with their stringent regulations.
Meanwhile, FIDE CEO has been trying to misdirect and shift the conversation to be about the 'fairness' of rule enforcement, to insinuate that they are right and just, while Magnus is being privileged.
They are trying to draw attention away from how their arbiter was just walking around looking for problems unrelated to the chess, where there were no problems to be had.
Calling out and fining people for a rule nobody cares about and that affects nobody.
Calling out and fining someone who was dressed presentably, just because TECHNICALLY he is wearing jeans.
Literally nobody cares about this. The arbiter was essentially just starting problems with players over things nobody cares about.
And then FIDE CEO comes and uses 'fairness' as a shield to shield the arbiter who was going around and using the rules to pointlessly and blindly nitpick peoples' attire for nobody's benefit, starting problems with the players and punishing them over completely inconsequential 'rule violations', and fining a bunch of players over things nobody will notice.
FIDE is pretending it was all about 'fairness', using fairness as a shield for their stupidity.
If they really wanted to be fair, instead of uniformly fining everyone, how about uniformly STOP nitpicking and agitating players?
And, once again, actually enforce the rules when the outfit is outright inappropriate, rather than enforcing them blindly over a silly nitpick like this?
When FIDE is constantly testing players' patience with absurdly nonsensical regulations, something like this was bound to happen.

Let’s figure out the Mystery of Magnus The Diva. The Deep Dive.
They gave Magnus 2 rounds to change, he didn’t. Would it not be belittling to Nepo, if he was to change but not Magnus?
But why the drama to quit?
      1. Magnus made some bold claims in the take take take video on his top rivals. He basically reiterated that he had no clear rivals besides Alireza and Hikaru. He’s also been piling on classical for being a bad format that lets weaker players cover up their weaknesses through huge time to apply theory cramming. But in this short time control tournament he drew against 2500s, and lost to lazavik (definitely not a regular 2500 like Magnus’s other opponents).
So after round 8, and being at 5 points, Magnus was very low down the rankings and most likely would not have won or perhaps even finished top third if he continued with this whole tournament. So to avoid his ego getting hurt, and having to eat his words before the tournament, the diva decided to snatch the spotlight and perhaps make this seem like he’s fighting against the Soviet Union military on his own. Now all the casuals with his dna trace at the back of their throats will say the world rapid and blitz champions are not legitimate, ignoring Magnus’s terrible show in the tournament.
      2. Magnus wants to be remembered in legend status like Fischer and Kasparov. Forget their strength and accolades, these two not Ono pushed forward chess theory but also had myths around them. Magnus wants to be known more than just Norwegian Rain Man with a sheltered upper middle class childhood and mostly just reduced to e-celeb athlete in modern safe and cushy times. So when he realised 2900 rating wasn’t possible because of overall rating deflation, and chess theory is saturated plus Magnus was never a theory innovator, so he felt a bit lost on how to go forward. Fischer went crazy and a fugitive. Kasparov went against the soviet political machine, and later tried to run for Russia president. But Magnus is like a grown child insanely good at chess, but otherwise pretty normal. No mythical stature. He even wondered how to explore options around chess. When nothing much seemed clear, he decided to pick a fight with fide and promote freestyle chess to have his Kasparov moment of breaking away and having two separate chess divisions. Hence the little childish tantrum like rebellion against fide, backed up by streamers having more clout in chess now and they’re all his minions.
      3. For everyone saying, “it’s jUst jEaNz tho”. What is chess at its core as an industry? It’s a spectacle. It sustains itself monetarily and otherwise because of viewership (online, or live tickets, and sponsorships predicated on that viewership). In that regard it is no different at its core business principle than onlyfans, trashy comedians, and other entertainment content. The reason everyone values it is because players devote their lives to developing super human cognitive skill at it? Why? Because they and us fans view chess as something important, prestigious, and serious. Now if dress codes don’t matter at an important event like the literal historical world championship title of rapid and blitz, then doesn’t all this just become casual spectacle? The only reason we respect chess super gms more than content creators and influencers (despite the latter being richer) is because we realise that all this official chess field has gravitas. Without that very gravitas, no one would care about Magnus being the best chess player. He’d be just like some Acoustic Kid genius at the spelling bee contest. It’s because centuries of prestige and respect and seriousness has been developed and preserved for this game of chess, is someone like Magnus able to strut around like “Oh I’m quirky, not like these other nerds. I’m a cool acoustic board game genius!!”
So cut the bull and stop glazing Magnus so much. He already has a girlfriend

He was issued a $200 fine to begin with. Refusal to change clothes "immediately" instead of the next day as Magnus offered is what resulted in "DQ." Still think that was a reasonable compromise that the Chief Arbiter should've allowed for the fine. EDIT: As the video explains from 1:09 - 1:36 , he was not technically disqualified, but the restricting him from round 9 play effectively eliminates the ability to make a podium finish were he to continue playing round 10 onward... it's definitely in the spirit of a "DQ."
Also Zaven Andriasian at the same event got away with "trousers" that were made to look just like jeans, so this is still just arbitrary powertripping by the arbiter any way you slice it.

For people saying Magnus should just follow the rules. It’s like during the case of the female IM again, where the arbiter made a mistake of marking the match as a loss when she clearly drew.
Although they corrected that, she was already matched against someone as if she lost. And FIDE stated they aren’t able to change the match-up because of the ‘rules’.
Remember, the intention behind making the rule is more important. They made that rule in order to ensure fair play, yet in this case, following that very same rule will be unfair to the female IM.
The case against Magnus, and even Ian is similar. They made rules like those to ensure the players look presentable in front of the camera for the viewers and the sponsors.
They already wore a formal and presentable attire when they came. Do they really have to be so strict with implementing ‘that’ rule when it literally doesn’t cause any inconvenience to anyone?
No. This is just a clear case of a power play. Ian complied because he didn’t want more trouble, and they let that get to their head.
Magnus was already fined and he himself stated he will follow that rule for tomorrow’s match. When they kept insisting and even threatened him with disqualification, as he said, it became a matter of principle.
Should he bow down even more when he already tried complying with them so much over such a rule?
Clearly he didn’t, and now FIDE has to accept the consequences of letting that power get to their head.

Leaving aside for a moment the fact that the dress code (or even the whole "behavior code") in chess is ridiculous, this definitely is not a "pants" issue. This is FIDE trying to reassert themselves as the owners and controllers of chess because of the Freestyle Chess drama (and also probably the fact that Magnus kinda "devalued" the World Chess Champion title nor participate in the last Candidates)...
The thing is that I think FIDE just shot themselves on the foot: they probably didn't think Magnus would just drop out of the Blitz portion of the tournament. Now they are stuck as the guys who disqualified the best chess player in history because of pants AND burned the bridges for any "peaceful" resolution to the Freestyle Chess thing.

Nepo was fined for his sheakers, he changed them and continued playing. Magnus was observing the dress code before, but now suddenly it became so super important to him to wear jeans.
If it is a power play, it is power play on the Magnus's part to own chess completely. He became co-owner of chess24, then chesscom moving him to the helm of all online chess. He own or co-owns more and more major tournaments, his only remaining obstacle to essentially own both online and offline chess is FIDE. If he dismantles them, it will be a game belonging to him and his buddies
And of course, he owns Gotham, he owns Hikaru, he owns the vast majority of all chess influencers. At this point it's almost impossible to get your chess coverage from people who aren't dependent on Magnus

@ccruzp06 The dress and behaviour codes are NOT ridiculous. The comfort and convenience of other competitors and the needs of advertisers and sponsors are important- very important. Once the dress&behaviour code is published and agreed the code should stand. In this case the enforcement was heavy-handed. I agree with Levy that allowing Magnus to finish the session dressed as he was would have been kinder, and certainly has no bearing on the results. If Magnus or anyone else was so offended by the rules I am sure the World's Press would have been delighted to hear about it before the event. I think a dress code is fair, for most sports including individual sports there are strict dress codes with some exceptions namely being "Keep it respectful" dress codes, as those allow for more leeway. Not being able to participate in a sport as a result is common. But that is typically only in scenarios where the event organizers do not want to be held liable for safety shenanigans such as wearing loose clothing and jewelry on a basketball court or soccer field. Other dress codes that are there strictly to keep a sport clean looking, will normally only result in a fine; especially when it is the first offense. That is to say that although some may believe that a dress code should be unilaterally destroyed, to keep up a sport like appearance, dress codes should be utilized. I mean, imagine if just some rough homeless looking fellow was on one of your favourite sports teams or a major contender in a sport you watch. It would wreck the sports image. So, understandably, Chess SHOULD have a dress code.
The question becomes: How strict of a dress code should Chess have?
My answer is this: The dress code should depend on the event organizer's regulations. However the organizer's regulations should permit for a large variety of apparel, barring only clothing which shows skin or is extremely loose. Essentially, keep it tamer than a high-schooler.
Now for sponsorship? if we really wants Chess to have sponsors, we should have the dress code be suits and ties, that way Chess could be associated not just with the idea of 'intellectual' but also of higher class. That would entice companies which sell luxury goods to invest in the Chess world. Like, imagine Rolex, the ads would be too easy with watches "Need the time but only the Chess clock is around? We've got you covered. Rolex". Another option would be to have Chess players act as models. Sign with a company to wear their clothes during large Chess events as a way to promote their clothes. A sense of luxury would be good, which is what I think FIDE is thinking.
So, depending on how we want Chess to look and how we want Chess to be like at the highest levels, a stricter dress code certainly seems important. If you give someone an inch, they'll take a mile. So they shouldn't give exceptions, even if it is the face of chess himself, Magnus Carlsen(If anything, they ought to be stricter with those who represent).
But in this case? I believe expulsion from the round is a ridiculous punishment for regular jeans. A fine would do just fine. If it were ripped jeans or showed skin? Fine, whatever, expulsion would at least seem somewhat reasonable. But plain jeans should be a light fine at most.

For a chess organisation to take issue with the type of _fabric & cut_ of a competitor's pants is beyond absurd, and to treat grown adults like children by demanding they "go & change out of jeans" after they've already been competing all day without having any 'jeans-related incidents' is childishly petty... what's next, dictating hemline lengths lest someone reveal a little too much ankle?! Anna cramling mentioned once playing a summer event in the Mediterranean somewhere where it was over 100 degrees, and being told her blouse was "distracting" because it was too revealing and she needed to wear something over it or change. She even showed a picture of the same style/cut of top, which would have been fine under even my conservative american middle schools dress code, let alone in southern europe during a hot summer day. Quite a few female players have complained about that, which makes sense honestly. People are still way oversensitive about dress codes even for men in a lot of places, let alone for women

Getting past the dress code kabuki theater and having now heard the various interviews of CEO of Fide, Hikaru, and Magnus, its pretty clear that FIDE is claiming every tournament that calls itself a word championship must 1) be governed by FIDE, that’s less a TM matter, but vertical monopolist restraint of trade. 2) On top of this, the CEO claims there are non-compete provisions in players contracts (Levy please follow up on this with CEO, Hikaru denied it) which could limit player independence. There will be a intellectual property vs monopoly restraint of trade suit between entities, and 2) litigation on covenants not to compete. US Chess players who are members of US Chess and Fide should get involved in separate NLRB union actions as well as monopoly lawsuits not unlike NCAA players have with NIL litigation. IMO, this is the outline of the problem, but if professional chess players don’t organize then FIDE will win as it did against Kasparov.
